    There's also artwork hidden in the game code showing it was intended to come out in the US, and that the game would be re-drawn with artwork from the Archie Comic/Sat AM cartoon. Mainly Robotnik.

    If anyone is interested in playing the actual arcade version of this and happens to live in the Chicagoland area, Galloping Ghost has an arcade cabinet with this game.
    Fair warning, the trackball controls still definitely take some getting used to. I can't imagine trying to play this game with a console controller. Definitely a neat novelty though.

    • @Aranesque
      @Aranesque 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Same! I was surprised Mighty was the fast one as well. Ray should have had a more forgiving jump and Mighty a better health bar but slower speed.

    • @psirensongs
      @psirensongs 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Aranesque My personal guess would be that Mighty was originally the strong one, Ray was the balanced one, and Sonic was the fast one before something happened like them realizing mid-development that making their flagship character the hardest to play would turn people off from playing it, or something along those lines.

      I haven't played it, but it's disingenuous to complain about the controls when not playing the game with the controls it was designed for.

      I don't think its like that necessarily. If the reviewer puts it in context and its the most common way the game might be played today its fair to review it in the lens of the situation.
      Like reviewing an Atari or arcade compilation and saying how a dial game or other unique controled game doesn't work on a thumb stick.

    This game was actually planned to be localized and brought over seas. There's even an alternate Robotnik sprite that resembles the SatAM show in the game's assets, but the port was never made because the game didn't do well enough in arcades. It was also going to be ported over in the Sonic Gems Collection for Gamecube, as well as Knuckles Chaotix, but both games were scrapped because of emulation issues. It's funny because you can still look at art from Knuckles Chaotix in Gems Collection, suggesting it was cut late in development. The only source we have for SegaSonic the Hedgehog being ported was an interview.

    I have played this at Galloping Ghost Arcade several times, and I can tell you that having a calibrated trackball doesn't make this any easier since everyones movement is to sensitive. Fun Fact btw, hidden in the arcade games data are sprites of Dr. Robotic modeled after the Sonic Sat. AM version so its speculated that a north american release was planned initially.

I thought for sure this had been released in the US and I have a (I guess... false?) memory of playing it in the arcades at an amusement park in the summer of 1993... several months BEFORE it released. Probably a case of me playing a similar type of game around that time and then when I discovered the ROM for this one my brain subbed it into that memory.

    There are also plans to bring this to the Gamecube/PS2 Sonic Gems Collection as well, but never happened as well due to the problems with emulating the trackball control too. 3:30 They could have made a track ball controller and packed it in with the game, but I suppose it would have made the game about 20 dollars more expensive. Still, another Sonic game on the 32X might have sold more systems. Not enough to save it I'm sure, but it would have been a step in the right direction. It was in desperate need of more big name titles.

    I think the main appeal to this game for a lot of people including me was that this looked more colorful and cartoony with all the extra animations.
    This is the sort of stuff we wanted to see in the main Sonic platform games which I was a huge fan of at the time (not so much any more now)
    But like you said, the player's biggest enemy in this game are the controls of the main characters, and well kind of the gameplay itself. It is not really that interesting of a game.
    Fortunately for it it is a rather short game if you can get past the various times your character will die.

It's just one of many quirks of him, and I can think of the same about who developed that game. I mean, something just doesn't seem right. For the players and for the team. I'm a huge Sonic fan and this is the first time I've heard of it, let alone the sequels. Next time I see that mate I'll mention it and he probably will shout VINDICATION or something like it

  • @Kenshiro3rd
    @Kenshiro3rd 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The reason the controls are so sensitive are BECAUSE of the trackball. If you’ve ever used a trackball to control a character (like in Crystal Castles) it’s surprisingly intuitive & responsive. The problem comes when translating them to a controller. Basically they don’t translate... at all. And for a trackball based game where you control a character’s acceleration/speed and direction all with a flick of a ball, it becomes the death knell for a game. Your issues playing it on emu are a demonstration of that.

    You don't need to buy an arcade cab to have a trackball. I use a Kensington Orbit as my main pointing device and I prefer it (due to hand-eye issues long story). It doesn't have the same "weight" as an old arcade trackball, sure, but I'm sure that could either be fixed or adjusted to. And just set, I dunno, Space as the jump, and you're good to go!

    Sonic Heroes Plus blunder aside Mighty and Ray were actually planned in very early development of Sonic Heroes to be on a team with Metal Sonic. So not only were Mighty and Ray denied making it into the 3D modern era of Sonic but Metal Sonic originally going to team up with them seems to imply he wasn't planned at first to be the main antagonist before that all changed.

    Can you indicate whether or not the game is fun to play while drunk in future reviews? I found that information to be incredibly helpful.

    At some point this was planned to be released in the West. They had special graphics that replaced Eggman with Dr. Robotnik from Sonic SatAM. For whatever reason, they decided against it, even though the thing would have done gangbusters at some sort of family friendly arcade. Chuck E. Cheese or something. Maybe they could have converted it to a ticket collection machine.

    I have a trackball, and this game doesn't really control much better than with analog stick. You have to hit really fast the trackball to advance at the pace the game requires, but characters keep either hitting everything and running off ledges, or suddenly hitting the brakes because the trackball movement isn't continuous. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong with the settings, but compared to Marble Madness which is super precise, this games is almost unplayable.
