The artwork is definitely nice, but they're just using a standard trick, faking a huge boss by drawing it on the background layer. There's nothing particularly special about these bosses on a technical level. The Mega Man series, in particular, LOVED doing this.

Buddy of mine rented this game back in the day. I remember playing it with him and us getting very frustrated. Ultimately we enjoyed it and it sort of stayed in my memory for years until I picked it up in the early 2000's. Cool to see you feature it. Also, this is a case for "localization gone mad" as the Famicom version (called Magic John) has much more cutesy protagonists and none of the American slang or jargon.

I mean, Sunset Overdrive SHOULD have been called something with "Rad" in the title. It played off all the late 80's and 90's tropes of being totally radical, rude and crude. All the main character needed was sunglasses and a skateboard (although you rode the rails like a like in Tony Hawk games).

There was a very cool site that listed the differences between this version and the Japanese version, Magic John, but I'm not sure it's around anymore... To be fair, the Japanese version was wholly unremarkable in terms of dialogues, so nobody would've ever remembered about this game, if not for the localized changes.

Another sugestion for your endless list of NES action platfformers "werewolf the last warrior" Oddly as it sounds NES was not very popular in my country and this was one of the few titles I could play on an actual NES back in the 90.

Had this one as a kid, so lots of love and nostalgia for it and think it's pretty underrated. It does have its quirks, and you gave it a fair go. I always thought the transformation mechanic was cool as shit (and all your animal forms LOOK cool as shit). Too easy to cheese the levels by just turning into bird man, but nice to have for kids. Weird you singled out the lion's invincible jump out over the wings though, as it's balanced pretty well with the short-range attack.
I think the difficulty is spot on too. Challenging but not impossible. The enemies in the caverns are bullet sponges though, which is tedious.

A lot to unpack here: 'Totally Rad' sounds like a skateboarding game where everyone chews bubble gum, wears sunglasses and basecaps and carries a boombox with them. But sure, it's about a wizard. That would have been my second guess.
The jump reminds me of Super Metroid, the charge shot and the small helmet-like enemies remind me of Megaman X.
Choosing your magic form reminded me of doing my taxes.
Overall it seems like a quick and not-so-bothersome playthrough. Aaand some sprites look amazing!

It was unique style with good graphics but it was a little to easy to beat and all this suits and clear screen weapons were very overpowered also the boss fights were easy. The boss graphics look amazing for the NES. Wow I would like to play this even if for just a while.

There's a really good web comic inspired in this game, Kidd Rad, really well done and finished

This game reminds me a bit of Commander Keen that I used to play on MS-DOS as a kid.

Think you summed this game up perfectly: Not nearly as good as the best of the NES, but definitely a game NES lovers should try out. Really a great looking game.

I've seen this game cartridge so many times at my local flea market and never bought it. I think I'll give it a shot.
