    I think bdg actually likes the tone it has, (I think??), though, because it has this very final fantasy crystal chronicles vibe to it, and that's probably one of the reasons he wanted a hurdy gurdy in the first place?
    Also, great video, I really enjoyed it! It was really nice hearing your thoughts and explanations, and the way you put it and reacted made it all pretty entertaining. You have very expressive faces, it's great. Good content, thank you!

      Thank you!
      I adore big ballads, they were like exciting and epic entertainment before there were books and movies.
      One of my favourites is Matty Groves. Fairport convention edited it down to 18 verses but the original had 29. Garmarna has some older albums with long epic songs and absolute peak drama is the Highwayman by Loreena McKennit. I did a Dutch classic with my band called Heer Halewijn (Lord Halewijn) we edited it down to the bare minimum needed to make the song make sense and still ended up with a 7 minute song. 🤣

    This video was very interesting and informative! Loved the comparision between the song in the video and you playing part of it.
    Also, whilst I assume this wasnt part of the joke, the fact that, in the song he pawned a laptop (and presumably his knowledge of what a laptop is) for a sub par hurdy gurdy adds an extra layer of comedy to it.
    Great video!

I don't think you threw any shade. :) But now that you've pointed out the problems with the particular instrument he bought, I really hope he's able to either modify it or otherwise make it work without hurting himself. I loved the part about twelve verses. One of my favorite songs of all time is The Swindlers Ballad by Worldwide Adventures and it’s like half an hour long and has four sections where the main characters die, go to hell, and overthrow Davy Jones to sail to Fiddlers Green on the ship that would never set sail. It is glorious.

    Hi.
    Was a concert cellist for 7 years.
    I know what you mean about tone.
    I also understand the appeal of a janky sounding instrument i.e. noisy key boxes and buzzing strings. Depends on for what one is going.

    • @Folkskelet
      @Folkskelet  4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Oh definitely! Not everything needs the extremely refined, creamy sound. There is enormous variety in gurdy sounds. Personally I do really differentiate between the rustic "janky" sounds and the sounds that indicate it isn't working correctly. But I do agree with you.

    Oh... wow. So I came here because it's you and I love your videos, and after the first few bars of the song I went and found the original and watched that, and then came back here to watch the rest of your take.
    I love how clear but kind you are in your dissection of this gurdy, this sweet guy's playing, and your way of describing how to get correct right hand position. It's really awful that it would likely be quite painful to use that crank correctly so it forces a player into an all-wrong position that might be quite difficult to correct later. I actually really like the video in terms of concept, writing, singing, all of it- except that gurdy! Brian does make it sound fairly decent, all things considered, but still. I love your analogy of buying a guitar with the frets in the wrong place, by the way- that's so useful and I will be using it in my own attempts to get folks up to speed on why even a beginner needs a certain level of quality in their instrument!

    the issues you had with the crank are easily fixable by raising the nob with a longer bolt and a small length of pipe to space it. And the long nut could be completely removed and replaced with an open axel nut and have any excess rod ground down.

    Came across this as a fan of Brian's but also as someone potentially interested in buying one of these instruments. What would you say is a good one to look for, since you say the one he has is not a good one to pick?

    • @Folkskelet
      @Folkskelet  4 ปีที่แล้ว +70

      That actually depends on what you want to do with it and how much you want to spend. It is a non standardized instrument so there is a lot of variety.
      What I would recommend is reserving a budget of around the 2.5K to 3K ballpark and shop for a forever gurdy. Get a GOOD and not too complicated gurdy from a really reputable maker. A proven model that you really like. Really research it and see if you and the maker click, see what other players think. 5 or 6 strings. It will not be too overwhelming but complete enough to be a joy to play at any level. Take good care of it and it will barely deprecate if at all. That way you have an amazing handmade gurdy for life and if you don't take to it or if you want to sell to reinvest in an upgrade, you will barely lose any money because the demand for well made and not too costly gurdies is really high.
      A nerdy gurdy can be good to dip your toes for a small fee and can be a good alternative to survive the waitlist. If you build the kit yourself, you can be done for a couple hundred.
      You can also do it for a budget in the 800 to 2000,- if you are willing to compromise and take a lot of care because that is the price range where items like this Etsy gurdy sit.
      I made a long list of gurdies under 2K, it is in the Hurdy Gurdy community on Facebook.
      Best thing to do is be patient and really research. I hope that helps!

    I'm learning an instrument (flute) for the first time and I made a poor choice buying it... it was actually helpful to notice that the trouble I had playing it was down to the instrument, not me! I am obsessed with Hurdy Gurdys and love listening to them. I follow Brian so likely found your channel on that link. Its great to hear the technical parts, and you made it informative which kept it interesting. I was looking to buy one (I live in the UK) and as its a niche instrument, I accepted it will be expensive, so thanks for providing the cautions on the Etsy version. It would be brill to know if there's a good value for money option which will be reliable. I'm not looking for cheapest but would still like to spend as little as possible, without buying an inferior product (that budget sweet spot). Would be nice to see future videos on more technical things and explanations of how it works, and why parts are made a specific way :)

    • @Folkskelet
      @Folkskelet  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you!! Yes, there definitely are reliable and more affordable options. I have made a big list of decent gurdies under 2K, that is in the Hurdy gurdy community on Facebook. In the UK I totally recommend Chris Allen & Sabina Kormylo. They are the makers of my hurdy gurdy and they are very, very good. Their instruments are very refined, light and sweet players. The symfonie (medieval box shaped) starts at 1200,- pounds and their other gurdies start at 2000,- pounds I think.
      I can imagine those numbers look a bit terrifying though, so have a look at the other list and see if there is something you really love. It is a big stack of money regardless, so take your time.
      I am planning other videos so I'll see if I can do a technical deep dive :)
