@@user-vp9ry3km2c You can either check Smashwiki's Gentleman article for a full explanation, or you can check Melee's PAL version source code to see what variables they changed. You forgot to mention the part where, despite half of Pichu's moves hurting itself and the character being intentionally designed as a joke character, Pichu still isn't actually the worst character in the game thanks to Bowser and Kirby
You forgot one: Ness, when controlled by a Level- 9 CPU, is broken. In most cases, he works just fine, but on Jungle Japes, if you don’t do anything, he always immediately double jumps into the pit between the platform you’re on and the main platform, tries and fails to PK Thunder you, and falls down and dies. If you set it to stock and set the amount of stock to one, you can win within 3 seconds, 2 if the Klaptrap attacks him before he can preform PK Thunder, and you can do this over and over again to easily unlock characters. On that note, you can also easily get both Falco and the Kongo Jungle stage by playing as Donkey Kong and spamming Down-B until you completed both. I haven’t been able to clear 15-Minute Melee this way because there’s something always happens that causes me to fly out of the stage, and you can’t turn items off in this mode, but I was able to beat 100- Man Melee this way. EDIT: I played the game again yesterday and managed to beat 15- minute Melee.

@@ShadowKryzis It's not busted enough to overcome all his other shortcomings. Ness' weaknesses are just way too exploitable for him to make enough use of it
Hey this video is really well put together, and I know I'm super late to commenting, just want to clarify a few things for people who are interested in learning more about some of these: 1. Meteor Cancels: So the way meteors work in melee is a little more complex than they appear at surface level. Without going too in depth, you essentially get a window to meteor cancel that can't be avoided, this isn't on the initial instance of the hit, but after hitlag ends. Trying to meteor cancel during hitlag locks you out of being able to meteor cancel for like 30 frames or so (in a practical sense, you die unless you are puff/kirby who can buffer meteor cancels). The lock out also happens just by holding up when you are hit (again, unless puff/kirby). Because hitlag is so important, in addition to the base knockback/velocity, certain meteors are considerably more powerful than others. Ganon and Falcon both have very powerful meteors with relatively low cool down and are able to effectively punish meteor cancels because of this. By comparison, Zelda has one of the weakest meteors in the game which is effectively useless as an edgeguard. Going back to the lock out, powerful meteors--provided they have fast start time--work well as DI traps since they require you to not be holding up when hit (which is common survival DI), so meteors like this are generally still very good edgeguard moves despite being able to be canceled. 2. Spikes: Spikes are super uncommon in melee, but 4 of the best characters in the game have them in NTSC versions of the game (falco, marth, falcon, fox). Spikes are crazy for all sorts of reasons and many of them act a little differently from each other. For example, Fox's down air does not spike in the same way as falco's, but its hitboxes are technically spike hitboxes (but multihit with fixed knockback). Functionally, this makes it worse as an edgeguard move, but it serves the purpose of breaking crouch cancel, since weak spikes and meteors into the ground activate a landing tumble as opposed to knockdown, which is a big deal in melee. The other important thing to note is that spikes and meteors have distinctly different base kb angles. Meteors send straight down (without DI), where spikes send at a down and out angle (again, with no DI). It's also worth noting that Marth loses his dair spike in the PAL version of melee and instead gets a meteor. This makes dair a less effective edgeguard, but the changed kb angle makes it a significantly better combo move. From what I understand, after melee all spikes were removed and replaced by meteors, but I think mechanically meteors work slightly different in the later games. I'm not an expert on the mechanics of the later games though, so I don't want to talk too much about that. 3. Kirby actually loses all of his jumps if hit out of any throw other than downthrow. It's most evident on uthrow because it pops you into the air on finishing. He's not the best designed character. 4. Gentleman is possible to get relatively consistent in NTSC, but it is very problematic. This issue was fixed in the PAL version of the game. 5. Yoyo glitch is wonky. It was also patched in PAL. 6. The ledge is typically one of the worst positions in the game, but certain characters are better in that spot than they should be (Fox). What makes the ledge broken isn't just the ability to come back onto stage invincibly, but that certain characters can retake center stage invincibly (Fox can ledgedash and run/walk to regain a ton of space). Characters like Luigi, marios, and Ice Climbers are able to take a lot of space with their ledgedashes and have decent amounts of active invincibility frames, but they are functionally much more linear than characters like fox or falco, so they get stuffed a lot more easily. The main point is that while ledgedashing makes the corner less bad than in the other games, it is still predominantly a losing position. 7. Not sure how to respond to the ledge trumping point, but that mechanic wasn't added until smash 4. Holding ledge as an edgeguard is definitely a little too strong in the first 3 games, but especially melee and 64. What is worse in melee is invincible ledgedrop attacks, which, while they make edgeguarding exciting, are pretty ridiculously broken, especially with things like fox's shine in the game. 8. Lots of characters have horrible dash grabs, this is usually avoided by doing jump cancel grabs instead. JC grab is where you jump after the running and then interrupt the jump squat animation (kneebend) with a grab, so you end up doing a standing grab out of dash. This mechanic was removed from later games, so characters with bad dash grabs are just stuck with them in those games. Unfortunately many of these grabs are so bad in melee, learning this technique is mandatory at a competitive level (i.e. Yoshi's dash grab extends into the z-axis and forces him to miss characters like sheik in her standing animation, so he needs to JC grab) 9. Falcon and Ganon's sideB wasn't given the function to autocancel into ledge snap yet in melee. This only exists for a very small number of moves in the game under specific circumstances (I.e. sheik and zelda's upB, but only from above the ledge, moving down). In other circumstances, recovery moves will complete their entire animation before snapping to the ledge. For example, when fox/falco upB or sideB to the ledge (unless from above, moving down), when they hit the wall they don't instantly snap, making them easier to edgeguard. Falcon and Ganon have the same issue with their sideB, but the animation continues after they begin falling and has a long cooldown before they enter the helpless state and are able to grab ledge again. Snapping to ledge was expanded to way more characters in brawl and smash 4. 10. Phantom hits are an unfortunate design flaw. Basically, why they happen is that there are multiple hitbox interactions happening whenever there is a collision. Pretty much you take damage, and the attacker experiences hit lag, as though they had gotten the hit, but the part that activates KB does not overlap. 11. Invisible Ceiling Glitch occurs if you have a certain amount of horizontal velocity when being attacked after hitting a shield. These get super weird and crazy, so I don't really want to try and explain them, but there are some good videos out there about it. 12. freeze glitch is a crazy phenomenon. The actual mechanical reasons it happens are confusing, but basically if something is in hitlag from a throw with nana when popo uses sideB, it gets frozen. This is easiest off of nana's throws, but it doesn't have to be. The glitch can also be triggered if the opponent throws nana when popo uses sideB. This includes command grabs like falcon and ganon's sideB. There are two different types of freeze too. Hard freeze is the more common one when an opponent can only be unfrozen by being pummeled or thrown by a hit throw (ICs up or forward throws), but there is also a soft freeze which happens under more specific circumstances where the frozen character can be unfrozen by any hit. Freeze glitch was also fixed in PAL. The moral of the story is that PAL is the superior version of the game.
This comment should be pinned, thanks for the super interesting read. I've only ever played the PAL version and thought I was a pro for having no trouble with falcon's gentleman
Pichu You from Melee: "About half her moveset damages herself. Really good character." You in Ultimate: "F-tilt kills so early. She may be the best character!"
oh... after watching the whole video i can finally realize why Sakurai wonders why people still cling to melee event hough he thinks the game is not his best work lol
In case you are actually wondering I guess Ill tell you, there are three main aspects really, 1 the competitive aspect of the game, 2 the community, and 3 the nostalgia people have with the game, the game is just really competitive because of how much you can do, well with the top tiers atleast, melee is not a game for... I dont like this word but casuals, if you want to enjoy melee you have to dedicate yourself to it, its not fun playing melee and just getting destroyed, but it is fun in melee to just destroy people, the community is not that good in general, a lot of people are very salty and annoying in the community, but it has its moments, the game has been out for more than 15 years and a lot has happened, in terms of the games meta and the players, its honestly a really cool story, then there are just people who have grown up with the game, and while the game only has 26 characters and 5 legal stages new things happen constantly, every session with a friend or a group of friends brings something new, to a lot of people who dont shower or brush their teeth this game is an absolute blissful experience that can be topped by no other... wow I really just went on, well there goes like 3 minutes of my life. but yeah melee is pretty cool.
@@TuxRacing69 Actually, Melee is as the other Smash games, for casuals. It's just that the game has more than intended *Cough* Glitches *Cough* and that's why it became a "Competitive" game. Honestly, Brawl is Better than Melee, and if it wasn't by the ugly nerfs and the tripping, it would be called the perfect game
@@zilatheraibukage are you serious? Brawl is the worst, mechanics wise. No other smash game has a random tripping mechanic. Thats not a glitch. I still cant believe they put that shit in. And on top of that, no other smash has a character as broken as double S tier meta knight..
My uncle is way better than me in Super Smash Bros. Melee,so I want to use the Ness glitch and when I win,I want to say,"Victory is finally mine." In Japanese
Same reason Dan Hibiki exists, joke character. Funnily enough it's considered better than Kirby and Bowser cause some of the moves it borrows from Pikachu have pretty good frame data.
@@reapernix4651 I feel like for alot of people, melee is a huge turn off, just simply because it basically revolves around mastering how broken everything is. That is really what it comes down to, and alot of players just want a more balanced experience at the end of the day. I will say that, melee is definitely the fastest smash bros game to date. No other game comes even close. I love all the smash games though, and I try to have an objective mindset. And I feel like smash 64 is kind of somewhere in the middle in terms of speed. I dunno, I just feel like every time I am playing melee, been playing recently. I always feel like I am moving and fighting like super fast. I can never keep up when playing as fox. He flies off stage fast and falls fast to. As I am not a competitive person by nature, I just play casually, but it is easy to understand and see why so many people love melee. It is really fast. But it is also incredibly broken to. If you can forgo all the broken mechanics and characters and glitches and all that, provided you can understand them and learn how to play all the top tier characters in the broken unintended states, then you can really enjoy melee competitively. Me personally, I want a more modern game that is pretty much just like melee with pacing, but where everything is balanced, and all characters can actually be used. Because that is the sad state to me. No one really plays other characters because they all suck. Everyone plays fox and marth and falco because, once you learn how to exploit all their broken mechanics, they are just simply untouchable. I think melee would be alot more approachable if there were more options. Just kind of annoying that most characters in melee are just downright pathetic in a competitive setting though. Like you might as well not even have them at that point. Casual play is casual play. But competitive play in melee is so min max based. Memorizing all the broken mechanics and everything else. Not near as much work for ultimate.
Yes, yes it can, though it's extremely uncommon, Sm4sh Roy's up smash can spike if you manage to hit the right hitbox from the right angle. Roy's upsmash will trap opponents and if they get hit by the outer hitboxes can be dragged back in, sometimes near the ledge they will simply pop out rather than hitting the center hitboxes. At least that's how I think it works from experience.
I love these videos, they're always really funny and clearly meant to be enjoyed mostly from a stance of "I'm not saying these games suck just that they have hilariously awful flaws". Thank you for making them! HOWEVER one thing no one seems to know is how easy it is to gentlemen once you understand the right technique. It has nothing to do with precise timing and it's super consistent once you understand it. I'm dropping this info here in case anyone might see it: Press A three times consecutively (while hitting a target, ideally from the first hit but it can work even if you only land hit 2 or even 3) and hold down A on the third press. THEN (key part most guides miss) input a movement command while STILL HOLDING A (jump, dash, crouch, etc) and you'll successfully gentleman. Then of course let go of A after youve transitioned into the new state (running/jumping etc). The only "precise timing" is getting the feel for when you start the dash/wavedash etc after the 3rd hit but that's ezpz to get a feel for. Super easy, no "A...A...A..." crap you see people talk about etc. Try it out!
I await your future video titled "Melee HD is Broken" Also everyone better pay attention to 5:41 because people tried to use the original video to say melee is "bad" lmaooooo
@@michaelbowman6684 probably, but he didn't specify that he was talking about ultimate at all. (on the topic of icies in ultimate, im fine with wobbling being gone since desyncing is still a thing)
The freeze glitch can be performed with any nana throw, its just that fthrow is the easiest to pull out since it has a 4 frame window to hit the side b, unlike the other 3 throws, which all need the side b to be frame perfect
Mew2King, one of the best Melee players in the world, thinks that Pichu actually beats Fox on final destination because if Pichu grabs fox once he can chaingrab fox all the way to death.
Well, funny thing that's one of the few things that was fixed in the PAL version. Although Marth's down air is a meteor and not a spike there. There... was an attempt of balance before it came out on PAL.
Pichu's attacks hurting itself is explained by the Pokedex: Pichu, the Tiny Mouse Pokémon. A pre-evolved form of Pikachu. Despite their size, Pichu release bursts of electricity that can shock even humans. However, Pichu are unskilled at controlling their electricity, and sometimes release it by accident when surprised, or when laughing and shock themselves.
tbf a lot of these were patched in the PAL version of the game (Falcon's jab, the only spike being falco dair and it lasts for half the frames, no ice climbers glitch, no ness glitch iirc)
The reason Melee is the way it is, is because it was rushed. You can even see it in the game itself, most of the models, textures, and sounds come from older games such as the voice lines for characters, a lot of stages and characters were cut for time constraints, an entire stage is literally just a bunch of Pokemon Stadium models, I can see that some of the backgrounds were photographs, and there's actually a lot of empty space in the files that even a modder used to make some form of Final Smashes. Melee is basically Sonic 06 if it was successful.
Yes all the time. I eventually beat it with fox. Foxes gun on hard mode can take advantage of NPCs on most stages. You basically fired it infinitely, and the CPU characters would basically shield themselves to death. I eventually beat it on hard mode this way and got the mew trophy lol.
There is a way to beat the IC's freeze glitch tho - get a stock lead, then when they freeze you, just SDI up so they cant grab you easy $, now they have to quit, while you can pull a hungrybox and time them out
ice climbers can *freeze* an opponent in place

a vastly superior gamecube game
I know, it’s such a welcome callback
Hey this video is really well put together, and I know I'm super late to commenting, just want to clarify a few things for people who are interested in learning more about some of these:
Yoshi's dash grab extends into the z-axis and forces him to miss characters like sheik in her standing animation, so he needs to JC grab)
I've only ever played the PAL version and thought I was a pro for having no trouble with falcon's gentleman
there is no superior version to a crappy, poorly made game.

@@seabass64 lol

HOWEVER one thing no one seems to know is how easy it is to gentlemen once you understand the right technique. It has nothing to do with precise timing and it's super consistent once you understand it. I'm dropping this info here in case anyone might see it:
Press A three times consecutively (while hitting a target, ideally from the first hit but it can work even if you only land hit 2 or even 3) and hold down A on the third press. Try it out!

Pichu's attacks hurting itself is explained by the Pokedex:
Pichu, the Tiny Mouse Pokémon. A pre-evolved form of Pikachu. Despite their size, Pichu release bursts of electricity that can shock even humans. However, Pichu are unskilled at controlling their electricity, and sometimes release it by accident when surprised, or when laughing and shock themselves.

Sound effect at 1:48?
The reason Melee is the way it is, is because it was rushed. You can even see it in the game itself, most of the models, textures, and sounds come from older games such as the voice lines for characters, a lot of stages and characters were cut for time constraints, an entire stage is literally just a bunch of Pokemon Stadium models, I can see that some of the backgrounds were photographs, and there's actually a lot of empty space in the files that even a modder used to make some form of Final Smashes. Melee is basically Sonic 06 if it was successful.

There is a way to beat the IC's freeze glitch tho - get a stock lead, then when they freeze you, just SDI up so they cant grab you easy $, now they have to quit, while you can pull a hungrybox and time them out
