restore the car a tribute to buddy halley and fans He would have wanted that for his fans don't let it die like he did let shine like a star like he was
The music did not die at all. Those guys showed the rest of us the way. Wish I was in Texas and could get hold of that car. Couple of hundred thousand bucks ought to do it.
+Crobular I i wouldnt pay hundreds of thousands on getting the car anyone can say they have buddy's 58 impala need to see papers proof and if that the hard top impala 58 doesnt go for much seen them sold for 28k up. what you want is the impala convertible thats where the money is at
If that was really and truely Buddy's car, I hope whoever owns it in the nearer future will cherish it. That is a price-less piece of history right there and if only I had enough money to buy it. Goddamn song.. American Pie makes me cry everytime I hear it. Buddy should still be alive, waiting to celebrate his 75th birthday this year...
This is a car that deserved to be restored! But, keep the original steering wheel, gas pedal, brake pedal, window cranks if at all possible. Priceless!
There's more to the story that I could not go into. I'm told the owner in Amarillo knew it was Buddy's car and was keeping it until he could get more money in an offer. The car needed work but the man also had medical problems and was not financially able to restore or rebuild.
As far as is known, the car remained in Lubbock with the Holley family - brothers Larry & Travis used the car sporadically as they felt it was a connection to their brother. A legal battle was started by Norman Petty over money owed (or claimed to be owed) and eventually, most of Buddy Holly's personal items that he did not own outright, were placed into an estate and sold off with the claimed money owed going to Norman Petty and the remainder to the Holley Family. Items like Buddy's guitars, or his motorcycle which had been bought with Buddy's own money remained with the family. Waylon Jennings eventually purchased the motorcycle off the Holley family and as far as I know, remains with the Jennings' family. The car was sold in 1963 and was never seen again. Again, this car is NOT Buddy Holly's car. It was proven to be a fraud.
Alfred Neuman I was just wondering if there was proof if this car was actually bought by Buddy Holly. I would think there would have been a paper trail with a VIN # or something on Buddy’s Car. Does anyone know where Buddy’s Chevy is now?
Don't forget it was just a car at the time, buddy was a fading star on package tours when he died, his records weren't selling well, his death and subsequent interest in him many years later is what makes him so well known now, there just wasn't a great deal of interest in him after he died. Books and movies made years later and other artists name checking him and recording his songs is what drove his popularity up. You have to look at it from the time and not now knowing everything that happened years after. A prime example Is in the UK in 1963 the beatles were huge and regularly did buddy holly covers on their radio show and often mentioned him. This brought his name to the forefront and gave him 3 top 10 hits in the UK in 1963, all previously unissued in the UK track's, he'd had the odd top 20 hit in the UK after his death in 1959, but as far as I'm aware nothing in his home country, he was pretty much forgotten.. There's so much more that contributes to him being so well known now. But back when he died he was a fading star but the bigger name on the tour. So his 2 year old car was just another 2 year old car, nothing special and looked liked most of the other cars of the era, it just belonged to a pop star that was losing popularity not gaining it..
yeah like most people i think the car should be restord i think its so terrible how people could just forget about his psetions like that i think Buddy gets the respect and recognition he deserves i mean this man right here was a big part of shaping rock and roll into wat it is today and to bad he didnt live longer then todays rock and roll might be actualy better... oh well though there is nothing i can do bout it RIP Buddy
What a gem! I think that it should be restored and put on display in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, in Cleveland, Ohio. There, the world could see it for generations to come. What a great find! My buddy had a 58 Impala convertible in high schoo and we used to cruise around in it on carefree summer days and nights, in upstate New York. Unfortunately my friend committed suicide about 10 years ago, distraught over his pending divorce.
@sdparrott720 Yes, I did manage to find a couple pictures of the car. Beautiful coral and white finish and done the way the articles said Holly had it at the time of ownership. Excellent job.
Norman was the reason why buddy had to put together a tour so he could make some cash cause norman was screwing him..that tour never would have happened if buddy had received fair royalties...just a dam shame...
It should be restored to its former glory & put in a museum because like it says in the clip it was being driven around 7 years after Buddy's death & forgotten about.
Mr. B. Here ! This vehicle is Americana to restore maybe not a good idea to save it make it running part of music history may be a respectable way to go ! Dion said it best he did not think the music die , those came after have kept it alive ! 😊😊😊😊
THIS CAR HAS BEEN RESTORED AS IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN. Buddy never saw it in its run down condition, so it was brought back to "Rave On". It is a piece of R&R history that has been saved. If you Google, Rick Bigham, a Lubbock on line article from 10 years ago tells the story. This video is very old and does'nt tell the whole story. Thanks Rick & Crew for saving this piece of R&R history for future generations. It's now back to it's former glory for everyone to enjoy as Buddy did.
Sam Sneed Sam Sneed Where the music was last heard!!........RIP BUDDY, RITCHIE & JAPE At this very moment 60 years ago these 3 were performing their last appearance before fate would take them away forever. Clearlake Iowa time is currently 12:50
Well I'm 61, I spent 21 years in a local classic chevy club here in Danville, Va. I've done some of my own cars, learning as I went, but, I helped a couple friends do there's off frame. I got a close friend with a 58 and just from my experience in our locality, a 58 is rare and worth something just for that but, I never cared for them. I figure that car has some value as is but it would be well worth close to 100k because of it's driver. I'm retired now and just like looking at them.
Front lap belts were in all U.S. cars by 1965 and the rear by 1966. Roads are also much better engineered for safety, making for less crashes and less fatalities in crashes.
No classic deserves the fate of rusting down into nothing in some forgotten junkyard, no matter who it belonged to. But on the flip side, no restored classic deserves to sit in a warehouse or on a showroom floor collecting dust, never being run.
well i was raised on Buddy and the kinda music! and its kinda sad that his car was treated that way...but someone took care of that 'BEAUTY' and now she's all better! :-)
I'm confused about something. Maria Elena Holley, when they first got married, would follow Buddy's tour bus to each gig in the beginning, introducing her as the band's secretary so fans would think Buddy was still single. So, what car was she driving if Buddy gave it to a friend to drive? When he got married, Maria wanted to move back to NY and is why the Crickets were without Buddy, not that they really broke up. They said after his death they didn't even know he was on the road doing the tour. If Maria was back in NY when he died, then maybe said she didn't need the car there, and could've walked or taken cabs, or knew someone with a car that could give her rides?
Como o classico que utilizava, Buddy Holly, Brilhou como uma estrela candente que nasceu e partiu sem nada combinar; maneco - Porto Alegre-RS - Brasil.
Im proud to own a '98 Pontiac that was made entirely in the USA- If the previous owners had used all dealer parts when repairing things, it would still to this day be a full american car. Assembled in Kansas City, KS.
@Theunit236 I can't remember the name of the song, but it was sung by Buddy Holly. The song was also featured in the 1983 hit thriller Christine. You might want to look at the soundtrack to that movie. Good movie by the way, if you haven't already seen it.
The Buddy Holly song in Christine was "Not Fade Away" and was playing on the radio as the car was going down the assembly line. The date was shown as Sept. 1958, which is when new model years were introduced back then
I am old enough to have owned cars from 1962, 1965, 1977, 1986, 1993 etc. The only advantage the older cars had was that they could be repaired easily. Other than that they were over powered, ill handling death traps. The dashboards were made of solid steel with solid steel knobs sticking out, NO SEAT BELTS, no safety crumple zones, no air bags, the roofs would crush like an egg shell if you ever rolled the car in an accident. I love old cars but I know the reality of their safety
Have seen pictures of the restored car, and not only is the 58 a beautiful car, this one with the 50th anniversary coral two tone paint and interior, fender skirts, dual antennas, and gold spinner hub caps, was so beautiful- I don't see how it was ever just left to rot in body shop yard. Whomever the Holleys sold it to, must have really wore it out. I read that it was only about 10 years old and about 25k miles when parked/killed. Buddy's car or not, that should have never happened to that car.
1958 was the fiftieth anniversary of the Model T Ford . Chevrolet didn't start building cars until 1912 , which is why there are anniversary gold '62 Impalas .
They should put it in a museum or something. They don't have to restore it or anything. I wouldn't just leave it there to rot even more. R.I.P Buddy Holly.
I haven't read all the comments, but I can't believe that there isn't some die hard BH fan who would either buy it or steal it. And as mentioned on the 1st page of comments, why hasn't a BH museum or the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame purchased it? God, I can't believe they are letting it rot away like that. I'm with another commenter. If I had the money, I'd buy it myself. What a bloody waste, man.
Rebuilt and sold: google won't let me post the link so go to the Auto Channel (website) and enter Buddy Holly into the search. Car has been fully restored and looks absolutely awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This car has been restored, however it is NOT the real deal. Mr. Clement was mistaken in thinking it was Buddy's from his claims that "... the last four digits of the VIN match the title." While this may be true, the first SIX numbers DO NOT MATCH. This car was scheduled to appear at this year's Barret-Jackson auction under the claim it was the real deal. Once it was learned that this car's VIN did not match the original title, the car was ejected from the auction.
What was the car in Christine? Could it be the premise of the idea of the movie? The actor was Buddy like and not fade away was a prominent song in the movie
What a shame the car was allowed to get in that condition. It should have been kept up because of who owned it. Thank God it was restored. George Vreeland Hill
you are probably right.....as I remember, the last time "bonnie & clyde's" bullet ridden ford was auctioned off it was in the 200 grand range. I sure hope who ever buys buddy's car restores it.
Waylon never mentioned any specifics on the car other than it was a "brand new Chevrolet" that his manager got for him. The info comes from a biography Walon wrote himself back in the mid 80's. The Impala was a 283 Power-Pack factory 4bbl. The car spent many years behind an unknown body shop. Stories I heard in years past...........
how can this happen ? with all the barns in texas just to be left out in the weeds..well my uncle had john wayne 1965 Lincoln but it was coverd, in Fairfield,ca. back in 1981. the pink slip said marion that's when I found out john wasn't his real name
That last tour he did, the Winter Dance party tickets were going for $1.25 which is about $10 bucks in todays money. Can you imagine? $10 bucks and you get to see Buddy Holly with Waylon Jennings, Richie Valens, Dion and the Belmonts and The Big Bopper. Oh yes and Franke Sardo. Today $10 bucks wouldn`t even cover parking.
I went to Lubbock High School, same HS BH went to. I roamed the same hallways BH did 10 years earlier. I remember specifically none of the teachers made it a big deal. I don't know why.
Older cars aren't safer per se, but the technology of modern today, resto rod your older car with anti lock brakes and air bags, then, with steel bumpers and seat belts they can be as safe. Probably safer...My friend has a jeep with steel tube bumpers someone rear ended him, a scratch on his bumper, other car, front and and engine came dismounted...totaled---I would not build an older car, unless I included the above no doubt
Norman Petty was no friend to Buddy Holly! Petty "Ripped Off" Buddy by claiming a "credit" he didn't deserve as a co-song writer on songs Buddy wrote. Also as far as this 58 Chev is concerned Buddy didn't need Petty's "loaner" because he owned a number of cars that were much more expensive and better than this Impala.
I would like to mention that this is NOT Buddy Holly's 1958 Impala. Bill Clement went on record as admiting that he lied about the car. The Full story appeared in Bill Griggs' excellent (sadly now defunct) "Rockin' 50's" magazine.
Glad to see they restored her - I had a '58 chevy impala convertible..one reason, Buddy & I sang a lot of the same stuff, but Buddy was a creative genius & I was a "side" man...
well you all will be relieved to hear that the car has been restored to as new condition about a year or two ago. this video is quite old. you can see the car if you google it
I'd take it and 'spruce' it up a bit and get it at least safely running just to be able to cruise it. I wouldnt do a frame off, sand blast and replace every screw and washer job... just a polish this and fix that kinda thing. Think it would be a nice ride :)
@doomedamerica Wow, you're a prince, aren't you? It's fortunate we're not all subject to your will, though sadly, still your opinions. This is a great find on someone's behalf. It should be restored and driven, and only Buddy Holly music should ever come from its stereo.
I've restored cars and hot rodded cars and this 58 needs to be restored. It's worthless as is but Buddy or not, it's worth between 50 and 80K $ when it's done. Ask Jay Leno what he'd pay.! No one wants to see a car that looks like scrap.
we currently have the fully restored 58 Impala for sale here in Las Vegas at Celebrity Cars Las Vegas , fully documented and its a Beautiful Machine
Elvis might be good but, Buddy Holly is the one and only King of Rock n Roll!

Buddy's the Prince.

The car was restored and is, I believe, on display in Lubbock.
It would be amazing to see that beauty restored to exactly the same way it was back in the 50's
Actually I think they did...And it's on youtube somwhere...
restore the car a tribute to buddy halley and fans He would have wanted that for his fans don't let it die like he did let shine like a star like he was
Who the hell is buddy halley
If only Buddy would have had a limo pick them up and follow the bus instead of that plane....if only.
I still listen his music all classic hit songs better back old days now junk music. I still listen his music long time and DVD .

Buddy deserves better than a pile of rust as a memorial. Restore it and put it in a museum for all to see and remember Buddy Holly
Restorations are never the same ...its only original once.
What a shame Buddy's car was allowed to get in such bad shape.
Not to mention it was misspelled on his first contract with Decca. Legend has it Buddy stuck with it anyway as his stage name.
Buddy Holly's best friend? This is the guy who froze Buddy's money up and he ended up on that tour. Some friend.
+Genny Mikel I don't think you get the joke.
I agree! It's not just that though, there are a lot of historical cars just sitting and rusting away right now.
Yeah i can still hear the echos from good ol' Buddy Holly . Love his music and play some regularly , capoing my Stratocaster. Rave on !
There's more to the story that I could not go into. I'm told the owner in Amarillo knew it was Buddy's car and was keeping it until he could get more money in an offer. The car needed work but the man also had medical problems and was not financially able to restore or rebuild.
Who drove Buddy Holly's Impala after he died and then commit the 'crime' to forget it?

Probably safer...My friend has a jeep with steel tube bumpers someone rear ended him, a scratch on his bumper, other car, front and and engine came dismounted...totaled---I would not build an older car, unless I included the above no doubt
Nope! "That'll Be The Day" was first recorded in Nashville, not Clovis!
The car deserved to be restored for crying out loud and I would like to see the pics of it now. Guess I need to google that next. Thanks
Norman Petty was no friend to Buddy Holly! Petty "Ripped Off" Buddy by claiming a "credit" he didn't deserve as a co-song writer on songs Buddy wrote. Also as far as this 58 Chev is concerned Buddy didn't need Petty's "loaner" because he owned a number of cars that were much more expensive and better than this Impala.
god i wish i had that car!
One of THE most important people in the history of rock'n'roll!!! Huge influence on The Beatles...
well you all will be relieved to hear that the car has been restored to as new condition about a year or two ago. this video is quite old. you can see the car if you google it
I hope someone restored it. Where is the car now? Still rotting away?
I'd take it and 'spruce' it up a bit and get it at least safely running just to be able to cruise it. I wouldnt do a frame off, sand blast and replace every screw and washer job... just a polish this and fix that kinda thing. Think it would be a nice ride :)
Wow. Awesome car, sad story.
Can you tell me anything about the restoration? As much as you can tell me about it, I'd like to hear it.
Is there a picture of Buddy with the car? I never seen one.
I bet this video is at least 30 years old. Anyone know of a car was destroyed ?
Someone bought the car in 2010 and now owns it.
Axel Bodin the car was fully restored and sold on Barrett-Jackson a couple years ago.

They should clean this car up a bit and ship it to the R&R Hall of Fame.
58 Bel Air Impala amazing
The car is still at the same place it is in the video, I've seen it recently and its been somewhat restored but theres stills alot of work to do.
@doomedamerica Wow, you're a prince, aren't you? It's fortunate we're not all subject to your will, though sadly, still your opinions.
This is a great find on someone's behalf. It should be restored and driven, and only Buddy Holly music should ever come from its stereo.
thanks to this news cast Buddy Holly impala was restored.
Yup chevys are the most simplest and firmly built cars in the states which are easy to repair also.
Yep I agree with that !
WOW I just viewed a picture of the car after it was restored. Beautiful!! Go to Google Images and type in "Buddy Holly car" and you will see it too.
Google images
I've restored cars and hot rodded cars and this 58 needs to be restored. It's worthless as is but Buddy or not, it's worth between 50 and 80K $ when it's done. Ask Jay Leno what he'd pay.!
No one wants to see a car that looks like scrap.
