- Buddy Holly and the Crickets made an appearance on the Arthur Murray Dance Party on December 29, 1957. It was unusual to see a band like the Crickets performing on the show. This video includes the complete introduction by Kathryn Murray. Another interesting note...this footage is used on Dick Clark's "American Bandstand" compilations. Clark claims that the footage of the only appearance that Holly and the Crickets made on Bandstand in the fall of 1958 was destroyed in the 70s. They performed "Heartbeat". It's a shame that the footage was destroyed because it was Buddy's last appearance on TV before his death.

In late 1958, Buddy opined that the "Rock & Roll Craze" was only going to last about 6 more months. He had no expectation of doing Rock for the rest of his career, so there's no telling what Buddy would have done. Based on his work in New York in 1958, it's pretty clear that he was heading into symphonic recordings. Waylon Jennings (a major fan and friend of Buddy's) said, "It's not a question of where Music would take Buddy Holly. It's a question of where Buddy Holly would have taken Music." It's always going to be a mystery.

Rock n roll eventually went to shit and I'm afraid buddy wouldve followed suit. He even hinted as much in other interviews.
Its tragic that he died but as a fan of his I LOVE that ALL of his material is great rather than him filling up his catalog with crap.
If he wouldve lived I would hope that he never would have went the way of progressive rock and instead always remained a real rock n roll entertainer....but again, I'm not sure he would have.

@@ZeskoWhirligan I've read that he was transitioning to folk & country music, though he also wanted to act, produce music, and score films. He probably would have created his own record label at some point. Holly was probably the most ambitious of the 50s rockers. "Learning the Game" evidenced how much his writing skills had blossomed even by age 22.
I just smile when I hear the woman's words at the beginning: "No matter what you think of rock and roll, I want you to keep an open mind." Wish more people were like this now a days

Buddy was a fearless artist. He faced life head-on. He even took his geeky looks and ran with it. Made quirky a celebration. Rock-and-roll, let the cat out of the bag, and he was there to tell us, if you feel it in your heart, go-for-it. This was and will always be, true love ways. Bless you all 💛

Buddy was the most beautiful man to ever walk the planet.
I was a 13 year old in 1957 and like most teenagers I listened to Rock N Roll on my transistor radio. My parents, like most parents of teens in those days did not like RNR and all the body twitching that went along with it. Also, like many other parents they regularly watched the Arthur Murray Dance Party. To say that I was shocked when Kathryn Murray introduced Buddy and the Crickets, is and understatement akin to the Grand Canyon is just a hole in the ground. Watch the wall flower kids behind the band... NOT A MOVEMENT - under strict orders to not dance or move with the beat... OK to let the guys play a song, but dancing to Rock N Roll - No Way! I watched my parents faces, complete shock... FYI, they later learned to enjoy it too.
Richard Troxel I just read that Joe Mauldin, the Bass player for the Crickets has just died... So sad, these were young lads from Lubbock, Texas, who found a sound and a message that resonated with young people everywhere and greatly influenced four young lads in Liverpool. So much so that Joe became a regular in Paul McCartney's annual salute to the Crickets.

Buddy Holly was too great! I remember finding out how he died when I was a kid, and wishing I could travel back in time to say DON'T GET ON THE PLANE, TAKE THE BUS LIKE EVERYONE ELSE to basically save his life and change music forever !

No one can overstate how new and brilliant Buddy was. He died at 22 in 1959. Without him there would have been no Beatles or Rolling Stones.

Rock and Rock wouldn’t be the same. The “full band” for the rock sound also came from him. He was so influential for being so young. It’s a shame death took him so early.
His playing style was aggressive.. guitar worn low too. Definitely the beginning of a path that lead to the Ramones and beyond...

Ask his drummer, Jerry Allison, who TAUGHT HIM to play the drums... Allison always says, "Buddy taught me how to play." Ask Joe Mauldin who taught him how to play bass... Mauldin will immediately say, "Buddy Holly taught me how to play." Buddy MADE DEMANDS that caused his bandmembers to BECOME BETTER than they were. Ask Waylon Jennings. Ask ANYBODY who knew Buddy's background, and they ALL admit that Buddy RECREATED the music scene for small bands.
Buddy had an astounding impact on rock and roll and did it in just a year and a half in the public eye! The influence he had on The Beatles, the entire British Invasion groups, was phenomenal. Had he not died tragically in that plane crash while on the Winter Dance Party tour, he had planned to go back to Lubbock, Texas, his hometown, and open his own recording studio. He wanted to produce new acts. Waylon Jennings, his guitarist on the last tour, being one of them. Lou Giordano was another. A tragic loss for American music when he died at 22, along with The Big Bopper (JP Richardson), and 17-year-old Ritchie Valens. What a legacy they left us though.

Happy Birthday Buddy. Today would have been your 81st birthday. You were just a young man of 22 when you left the world in Feb. 1959. Gone but NEVER forgotten! You influenced countless of artists & musicians over the decades and your songs have been and STILL are played around the world! You left us with such a powerful and tremendous legacy of music and all was accomplished in a short period of time! A super talented young man who made many pick up a guitar and want to learn "That'll be the day", Peggy Sue, Rave on, Maybe baby, Oh boy and on. You are missed by many and we can only wonder and imagine what other great songs you would have recorded as time moved on. All those young women in the background standing absolutely still....obviously under orders. One of the best rock 'n roll songs ever recorded, and at that time new to them. It must have been torture. And this show was called a 'Dance Party'.

Interesting that we see Buddy performing here in the Arthur Murray Dance Party, at the beginning of his fame. His career ended with the Winter Dance Party.
Buddy Holly met Elvis Presley during the Louisiana hay ride in 1955. The so-called King of Rock and Roll met the real King of Rock and Roll. Buddy made a tremendous impact that went across the country and to the UK who never heard of this musicivan from Lubbock Texas. You were killed Buddy.. but you still live!

I grew up listening to my father's Buddy Holly records. Didn't know Buddy had died before I was even born until I was around 12. I probably cried for a week. Buddy Holly was a musical GENIUS! I'm raising another generation of Buddy Holly fans to carry on the tradition.
I was born right at the end of '53 and this and Blue Suede Shoes were the first songs that sank in. What an era.
My parents saw him play at his last show before I was born.
They went to the show at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake??!!! OMG I bet your parents have/had incredible stories and memories from that show.
As a teen age farm kid in N.E. Iowa in 1958 I was fortunate enuf to see the CRICKETS (BUDDYHOLLY) at Matters Ballroom in Decorah Iowa............see many greats in those good old days. RAL Donner.....B. Bumble and the Stingers...Tony Orlando....Buddy Knox...Jimmie Bowen. They weren't called concerts then..
..they were dances...and we all did.I almost fainted when I got to dance with . RAL DONNER. Never forget the bitter cold snowy a.m. in February when Ma woke me up for school and told the terrible news of the plane crash over in CLEAR LAKE. THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED.

navy shore duty, as a 19 y/o Aviation Electrician's Mate 3rd Class. What an
innocent and peaceful time, compared to the last 20 years, even with the Cold
War closer to Hot than most people knew. Damn shame to lose Buddy so young.
In 1958 Elvis, the king of Rock & Roll, went to the Army and never came back. Jerry Lee Lewis was banned and blacklisted, Little Richard retired, Chuck Berry was in prison and Buddy Holly died in 1959. What a mess. Buddy was a real genius. Rip.

Man, when you consider all the great songs -- Peggy Sue, Oh Boy, Rave on, It's Alright, That'll Be the Day, Peggy Sue Got Married, Everyday and about 15 others -- all written, recorded and released in just 2 years by the age of 22(!!!) it is staggering to think of what he could have accomplished.

Buddy Holly was amazing. The guy put out so much great music in just a couple of years. His hits are great but so are many of the other songs on his albums. He wrote most of his songs in a time when that wasn’t at all common and arranged his own music for recordings. He was a visionary who was an idol to the Beatles, Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan, who saw him play live just a couple days before he was tragically killed. His music will always live on. He’s the true king of rock.
I was 11 when Buddy died. I was just becoming aware of rock n roll thx to my older sister who was then almost 16. I sure remember when Buddy died which I heard it on the radio & got the sense that it was a pretty big deal. Of course, all three of those who died seemed “old” to me then. 😄
Now 2 of my grown sons both have ‘dibs’ on my Buddy Holly vinyl albums, (not to mention my original Elvis & Beatles records). Buddy was an amazingly creative and gifted musician. There’s never been another like him. Huge loss when all three of those young men died.

Anytime I see him live I think that the music would go in another direction if that plane landed well.. He was such a hero, and I'm sure that being such a creative talent he could be the superstar of the 60s. To see, how he aging, how he became wise and experienced while still bright and shiny... Elvis and Buddy have their own unique styles. Elvis has the looks, the voice and that wild showmanship that was so unusual in the 50s and that made him King . Buddy is one helluva guitar player and also composes.his own songs.

I believe that was Katherine Murray. She and her husband Arthur got people dancing all over the world. They did mostly ballroom style dancing and there were Arthur Murray Dance schools in many cities.

Buddy could've never imagined his approach to songwriting, his band lineup, and energy would set the stage for The Beatles, the music of the 1960s, and Pop Music Future. Our greatest treasures aren't always wrapped in pretty boy looks. Buddy Holly was a musical dynamo!

All through that, Buddy was only stroking DOWN on the Fender. Not UP and down, just DOWN. "Peggy Sue" was originally called "Cindy Lou," a Calypso song that Buddy wrote and performed for his niece, Cindy Lou. Jerry Allison asked Buddy if they could change the title to "Peggy Sue" (Peggy Sue was Jerry's fiancé at the time). Buddy said YES, but only if Jerry could play paradiddles all the way through the song. Jerry did it, played paradiddles, and Buddy changed the song title to Peggy Sue.

He was like 21 years old here. Incredible. One of the inventors of Rock and Roll. He’d be in his 80s now had he survived. What’s even more incredible is he was 4 years older than Ritchie Valens. Another charter member of the Rock and Roll first graduating class. God Bless them both. 🎵🎸⛪️
A compilation of Buddy Holly songs was actually the very first record I bought in 1976 when I was eight years old. 41 years have gone by and I still love his music like I did back then.

Wow..how can all those people in the background not be moving an inch to this?..those were some very rigid times back then.. I could never stand still like that confronted with such a masterful piece of Rock 'n' Roll
+J Mac They all were want to break loose and wanted to but you have to remember that they had never heard this new sound and didn't know what to think of it.
Back then it wasn't proper to do that. You were considered a hooligan if you just busted out and startted dancing. There were certain rules you had to follow.
***** That's just how things were back then. You didn't do certain things. You were supposed to be proper and act a certain way, especially in public. I think some of that should be brought back, the acting proper in public thing at least, and not acting like a damn fool or you just escaped from the Flakey Farm, for the whole world to see and just for the attention.
***** I wasn't talking about dresses and all of that, although some of the clothes women wear should noy be worn. I'm talking about the way people act. Most people used to be more polite especially in public.
***** Again, I'm not talking about that and those weren't polite people with manners, those were sickos, monsters and people who were against all things good. Those were people who wanted to destroy, who did not want to make progress with certain things, were ignorant, were greedy, only cared about themselves, had a one track mind, were close minded and so on. I'm talking about manners and the people who had to be kind to you wherever you went and those were actually kind to everyone no matter what. You're obviously not undertsanding anything I'm saying. I didn't think I would have to explain or have to explain the difference. With the exception of a few races, although there were a lot of times that was passed over, people were willing to help unlike most places that you go to for "help" today that don't help you and or give very little help. The most "help they give today are to those that don't need or deserve it. Certain people get $10,000 a month or more in social security and food stamps because they refuse to lose 900 lbs or (im being nice here and not saying) certain groups of people don't or they say they don't speak english, while I get barely enough to survive on each month and I get told "I'm sorry, but we can't give you anymore help then that". Because that's what a certain "running group" tells me I'm worth, because of what I look like and according to them I have no ailments or illness even though I suffer from depression and severe chronic anxiety. add and adhd, which are illnesses, as well as a bad back, several herniated discs in my spine and my spine is now slowly deteriorating, I also have to take super strong pain medication, anxiety medication and other medication for the add and adhd, which all of keeps me from working and going out in public for the most part, but according to them, when I was first just diagnosed with the spine, back, depression and anxiety, they said none of that should prevent me from working. Even though some is being done for me now and years ago they couldn't have done much for me, but still, I don't get enough money and my Dr get s questioned why I need all of that medicine. Hello, I have ailments. Sorry for going on, but I was trying to make a point.

My father went to Norman Petty studios while Norman's wife was still alive. His favorite musician was Buddy Holly. His pictures he got were great. He also visited Buddy Holly's grave. It has a metal of some type pressed with Buddy's image on it if I remember right. Somberist of photos. The tour played Serb Hall in Milwaukee, Wi in my state before his last place in Clear Lake, Iowa. A lot of musicians death's have wisconsin connections or close times. Like Stevie Ray Vaughn's copter crash after leaving Alpine Valley. Too many young dead. And Eddue Cochran died a year after the day the music died. 58-59 were sad years indeed for r'n'r. Rip.
Eric Clapton's Blackie sold for just under a million. Don't forget his 50's Fender tube amp. It would be worth a bundle too.

I read that Buddy was hung like a horse, too. I heard Little Richard was so impressed that he used to invite Buddy to fool around with girls in the back seat of his (Richards) car just so he could sneak a peek at Buddy's Texas long horn through the rear-view mirror.
Aside from the greatness of Holly, the band is sublime. That drummer does more with a on the floor Bass beat and snare than many can't do with double kick and heavy metal kit.
That's some pretty fierce strumming.

A truncated version, missing the second verse, which was normal during TV appearances at that time. But always a pleasure to see one of the absolute masters in action. Too bad that Buddy Holly was not yet doing TV appearances when he recorded Down The Line a couple of years earlier. That would have been a real jaw dropping moment.

what strikes me watching this is the women in the back ground. if you watch them they are moving to the music as wanting to dance to it. you can bet they were told not to move at all. Rock and roll was still taboo to many back then
