The best rock and roll documentary ever made. Buddy created the model for all that followed him. The Beatles and the Rolling Stones owe their existence to him. While Buddy was influenced by the great black artists and Elvis he created the rock star that recorded his music his way, wrote his own music etc.
Keith Moon wouldn't have been possible without Jerry Allison. He influenced every Surf Rock drummer that followed him - and that was Keith's main influence. Buddy's influence on guitarists and Rock/Pop songwriters is undeniable. What an incredible band!
@@1Crunch. Not Fade Away was supposed to be the other song they would play on their second appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. However, they had a falling out with Sullivan and they only played one song, the Sullivan sabotaged Oh Boy!. Anyway, I wonder what it would have sounded like live with actual drums?
I love the demonstrations! I never knew they used a cardboard box. I just wish the rest of the parts if the documentary were posted, its says theres supposed to be 10 parts.
2:23 "I just emptied a box last night", then he gets a Jim Beam box.....great stuff, and even greater playing. Is it just me or was drum playing better back then?
The movie never gave respect to Jerry Alison and Joe B. They were, are because they are still living, but very old now very good musicians. It was incredible they all were from the same place at that time and also Waylon. McCartney does an incredible job in showing who they all are or were, and the movie never did justice to any of them or even told the real story.

It's kinda hard to say whether what brand of microphone that Buddy has around his neck, but its either an RCA Lavalier mic BK6B or SENNHEISER MD214 microphone.
Why? Being alive now means you can enjoy everything from the past without having to wait for it to be created. And possibly, you would think quite differently about the things you like now if you were alive then. These years we live in are quite fine, and y'can't change it so you might as well enjoy being alive now.
Seems like nobody is interested very much about WHEN Paul McCartney released this film...? I think it's always important to know when artworks of any kind had been made/released... Could be between '79 or '81...? Who could help?
@allexx123 Because that movie was far far beyond inaccurate in many ways. I reccomend searching out a book called "Remembering Buddy". It's out of print now but I found it at my library.
@trishfe I agree--I don't know of any other record producer or manager who insisted on horning in on his artists' songwriting credits. Larry Holley is right--Norman Petty was a real skinflint. He never even paid the Holleys for doing the tile job in the studio echo chamber; not one cent.
Notice how the box barely moves, and he puts no holes in it. That's called touch. All the best drummers are very deft, and very nuanced. Then again - duh!
Dammit, if Jerry isn't ridiculously underrated for his contributions to rock and roll drumming. He still had "it" at this point, too.
So long JI thank you for the wonderful music and memories.

I didn't know - it wasn't publicised. Wikipedia says 22nd - shocked!

Buddy Holly! My favorite singer,
.Yes

Jerry Alison is probably my favorite drummer.
Peggy Sue. What a song. The drumming is the most important thing in that song.
I never have understood even though I have been a drummer myself 30 years just how amazing Jerry actually really was on drums. I just thought I knew.
Fr. I like how he just started playing not fade away on a box lol. He's excellent at what he does.

AMAZING drum stuff.
Wow you are great. Love all you do.
I learned how to play paradiddles JUST to be able to play this song. The great Jerry Allison was a master of them, clearly!
The song with the cricket sound she was referring to was I’m Gonna Love You Too.
Jerry is a great drummer his ear for changing difference beats to fit the tune is amazing

This is the only movie that tells the real story of Buddy Holly. I have it on DVD.
the greatest drummer of all time mmmmmm god rest you jerry

Love the empty Jim Beam box!
I have a personalized signed photo of Jerry above my desk. I'll never part with it, amazing drummer and fellow!
As I've said it before I'd like to see someone try that on American Idol haha can't do it I don't believe
Watching Buddy performing, I can't help thinking of John Lennon...

Why is it that the 4th guy ( guitar player) in the Holly band was not included in the 1978 Buddy Holly Story movie ?

What was the song with the cricket at the end again
What’sThe name of this song with the crickets at the end
Where's part 4???
Yes, he can play like Chuck.
Where can I find the rest of this program? It's very informative.
They had humor they were like the beatles before the beatles

Mid 80s, I believe....84', I believe...
Does the sound cut off at around 9:30 for anyone else?
It really doesn't matter what mic you use. All that matters is that you got a song and a sound in your head. Everything else is buillding blocks.
Jerry seems like he's cool.

every new band should do at least 1cardboard box song ;)
5:20 🥁
You say 1 through 10, but all I found was 1 2 and 5.? Great video but it would be good to see the rest
What's Buddy Holly wearing around his neck there? Place to hold his guitar picks or what?
Microphone, sorry it took 6 years for an answer.

LOL!
Is Mike Wolf reincarnated or is it just me.

I noticed that on Peggy Sue - very busy pattern, but somehow he keeps it quiet. Very tasteful.
Jim Beam cardboard box!
Said he emptied that box the night before. Was he hungover?
What's the tuning on Jerry''s snare when he's explaining Peggy Sue? Or did he drop the snare wires? It sounds like a tom.
