      +PHIL IN FLORENCE it works great. I am going to try just ribs in it next time. I think all the moisture from the brined bird cause the ribs to steam a little.

    Looks good, I have two, been using them for about 10 years, add some foil around the drip pan it makes it easier to clean, you could add the ribs to your BBQ pit and sauce them, pork butts are the best on the Orion

      +Keeping It Dutch Ribs were good. Had a slight pull to them. Not fall off the bone. It seems them steam a bit
      Owner told me to put them in the fridge about 30 mins before cooking to evaporate the moisture off the surface. I had that chicken in there too and it was brined which has a lot of moisture to it. I loved the cooker. It's a awesome idea. Bass pro has them for 139.99 right now. They are normally 189.99.

    Did you add anything on the outside of the cooker to preserve the finish because it seems like with the coal directly touching it it'll rust easier.

    • @EarlybirdFarmSC
      @EarlybirdFarmSC 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The outside is Stainless steel so it shouldn’t rust. It will turn black though from cooking from the soot.

    I can't help but ask why you do not wait for the horrible taste of lighter fluid to burn off before putting the food in.

    • @SouthernFoodJunkie
      @SouthernFoodJunkie  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I normally would agree but in this cooker the charcoal never comes in contact with the food. The charcoal is on the outside and the food is sealed on the inside. I tried to explain that in the video, maybe I didn't do a good job of it. I might need to do a update video on it. If I was using a regular grill with charcoal, I would never use lighter fluid. I use a chimney. You could use it for this too but it is a bit slower. I hope this helps explain why. Thanks for watching and for posting your question.

      @@SouthernFoodJunkie Thanks for the reply. After seeing your response I did some searching and I now understand that the fire is not allowed to enter the cooking chamber. How you know when the Orion is starting tocook

    • @SouthernFoodJunkie
      @SouthernFoodJunkie  ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s based off of time. Once you light the charcoal, you start your time. It takes about 15 minutes or so to come up to heat.
      For example, a Turkey takes 7 minutes per lb. So a 18lb Turkey will take right at 2hrs to cook. Put the bird in the cooker. Light the charcoal, then start your time. I hope that makes sense. Happy Thanksgiving 🦃

  • @StaceGordon-qn5se
    @StaceGordon-qn5se 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    looks like a nightmare to clean and fire two heat sources, a pellet grill works so much easier, higher capacity, can't spill hot coals, etc. A pellet grill can be dialed into an exact temp and the newer ones are all wifi enabled. easy to monitor progress.... how do you control the temperature of this? . This is a really a crude / terrible design in my opinion

    • @SouthernFoodJunkie
      @SouthernFoodJunkie  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree that the Pellet grill has some advantages but this thing really is great. The cooking time is based on time and not regulating temperature. You light the charcoal and walk away and come back at the end of the time based on what you’re cooking. This is also smaller and portable whereas a large pellet grill isn’t. This really shines with Turkey or chicken. Thanks.

    • @StaceGordon-qn5se
      @StaceGordon-qn5se 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good points and being portable is clearly an advantage. I’m a food scientist however and cooking strictly based on time concerns me a bit. Different meats vary in size and density. An internal meat temp should be confirmed with a thermometer to ensure safety and quality of a cook. But I appreciate every method has its pros and cons. Thanks!!!

      It is great for a quick cook but the ribs are not as good as a offset. I love chicken or turkey on it the best. It's still a great way to cook and I would recommend it for sure. • @SouthernFoodJunkie
      @SouthernFoodJunkie  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I didn't use instant light but did use lighter fluid. Normally I don't do that but with this cooker it doesn't matter. The charcoal never comes in contact with the food. The charcoal is just used for heat and not flavor. Charcoal is on the outside of the cooker and the food is on the inside. I hope that makes sense. Thanks for your question.

      That is true but the fact is the charcoal is on the outside of the cooker while the food is on the inside. They never come in contact with each other in order for food to have a chemical taste. I’ve tried to explain that but the charcoal is only a heat source. The food is sealed up inside the cooker while the charcoal is on the outside. I have a video showing that if you want to see.
