I live in South America and I am South American... I watch a lot of BBQ because I like it... but the best thing is with Franklin... he is the most real person on the networks... he behaves like we all do in life real... my respects 👏👏👏👏
First time I see someone with a winch on their truck use one 😂 Pulling propane tanks out of a ditch to make a smoker is definitely a reason to have one 👍
That's about as dumb as saying, "I've seen plenty of people with a firearm but I've never seen any of them pew pew someone". Having a winch is a last resort. If you are using it all the time you're trearing your truck up.
I keep thinking, with the size of his business now, and judging bbq tv shows, doing interviews, and everything else, is this the best use of his time? Then I realized it’s probably his FAVORITE use of his time. Even though making videos is a pain, he probably enjoys building pits and having minimal interaction with others once in a while. I would.
Wasnt a plasma cutter, just simple torches. Really cost affordable and simple. Also he is crude welding, its not for looks but function. Totally worth diy if you collect the stuff over time
You can get a Vulcan 220 which is a really nice welder for 1000 bucks at harbor freight. Other than that a grinder and other basic tools will be fine. Having a welder and knowing how to use it is super nice.
Nice. I added old axe handles for my doors. They stay cool and I think that they look nice. I don't treat them with anything and they have lasted for over 6 years now. I am considering building another pit and really appreciate your insights.
My dad was a welder / fitter for 40 years. You are right. He built his and he could bbq chicken that was so so delicious! His pit was super cool. It was made out of 2 regular steel barrels. Oil type barrels.
I love my 18” WSM water smoker. I disagree with the heat retention, i easily go 12 hours on a full load of charcoal before i have to add any more fuel. I think it’s perfect for smoking pork butts.
Great video Aaron! Really appreciate you showing the tips and tricks you’ve learned over time. Loved the proper use of available equipment to retrieve a sharpie! Well done sir!
I really like how a semi-insulated firebox was stressed. When I build bigger fires with a bigger coal bed, my briskets taste so much better. I’m upgrading to a 250 and there’s only a few builders who have semi insulated, most are fully insulated.
@@finecraftsmenllc2182 it’s an air gap with no insulation, so basically a smaller pipe within a larger pipe but no insulation in that void between the two pipes. Fully insulated uses a insulation there, and you can actually touch the outside of the outer pipe without getting burned.
Good video.. it’s pretty funny that this tank was just found in the wild down a little hill in the forest. I’m going to have to go propane tank hunting in the woods.
I wonder where his shop is located? The piney woods reminds me of my old house in Bastrop that was burned out in wildfire. I so miss my house and the amazing trees that attracted me to the area in the first place.
I Believe that, Propane gas does not rise in the air but hangs low to the ground when it’s allows to leak out of the tank. So maybe after taking the valves off turn the tank over so the valves are pointing to the ground so if there is any gas left in tank it can leak out. But way to the gas gets blown away form the ground getting deluded by the low ground air. But talk with the Propane dealer to double check what I am saying, Good luck enjoy your BBQ ❤🎉
Smitty's is on Commerce and W. Market in Lockhart Texas. I think there's a Firestone service center next to it or something like that. There's another eating joint across the street from them called Henry's. Both has good food. BTDT.
Would love to hear about cooling initially to clean and season the tanks before putting something on it you’ll actually eat. A rusty propane tank doesn’t sound like a good idea.
NICE! Ive been looking for this video!!!! it used to be on Aarons personal channel several years ago, and then all of a sudden it was gone, MIA, nowhere to be found or atleast anywhere I could find!!! Soo glad it is back! I imagine PBS bought the rights?? Either way, glad it is back!
I lived in Austin for 30 years used to be an old guy off Manor road was the Only place to get real good brisket and ribs. I never had your bbq but I am here to tell you Because of YOU Brisket that used to be one of the Most adorable cut of meat for an entire family has become Ridiculously expensive so I hope you enjoy your Fame at the Expense of others no bodys brisket is THAT good.‼😤
I don't get the 'we don't use thermometers' pride from some cooks. I used to do the same until I realized that there is literally NO reason not to use one. Anyone's cooking will only get better and more consistent if you use a thermometer.

Franklins book is the source for all the Texas cooking secrets. The book may be a teacher to a lot of the new guys popping up on the scene. Good stuff
Not only are you a master smoker, you a great fabricator! Well done Aaron!
He makes everything look so simple. Wish that the video was longer.🤔👏🏾👏🏾
Dude seems like so much fun to hang out with! Jokes and BBQ all day...what a life.
Pretty much what I was going to say! He’s living the dream for sure!
You should hang out in the waiting line outside Franklin BBQ.
Real success is finding your lifework in the work that you love.

I love how the video starts feeling like a realistic and accessible DIY project, until Aaron starts flexing his welding skills lol
along with the use of a plasma cutter, and forklift lol
Wasnt a plasma cutter, just simple torches. Really cost affordable and simple. Also he is crude welding, its not for looks but function. Totally worth diy if you collect the stuff over time
All of that can be done with very basic welding skills and basic welding tools. Flux core welder and a grinder could build all of it.
What did you expect ? A hammer and a drill ?

I wish I could find a feral propane tank out in the wild like that!
BBQ tastes better when cooked on something you built. Very nice.

Absolutely love Franklin's take on BBQ, country side feel without the nonsense and a little splash of science.

He's a better natural presenter than 90% of the professionals
Perseverance is a great element of success. If you only knock long enough and loud enough at the gate, you are sure to wake up somebody.
This whole series is fantastic.
I used this video as a guide to build my 250 gallon offset years ago. This is solid gold information.
Video is only 8 months old
Rerun.
PBS putting these old episodes on the tube. Good deal, since my copies of them got lost.

What do you mean by semi insulated?

Nice craftsmanship skills. Design
Layout,cutting,fitting,
Welding. Thanks for sharing your great skills and ideas from time tested trial and error
You can also use a chalk line for quick and easy line marking what is straight as well. Done that a few time
The Norm Abram of BBQ. "On this episode of This Old Brisket...."
I've had Smitty's when I first moved to Texas. It wasn't my favorite but it's definitely worth a visit.
Aaron, Your dedication to the craft is commendable! I'm very impressed with your abilities and knowledge.
Cool content.
It sould have been nice to see more details on how the smoke stack was connected.
Aaron is the master of barbecue!!!!!!
Nice pit build and delicious lime Modelo !
It would be a pleasure to hang out with Arron for a day...he puts the cool in "COOL CAT". 🍻
Happy 100th birthday to Smitty's Market. Great story to hear.
Arron’s videos got me started on smoking different meats. Thank you Arron
We need more Franklin episodes.
As someone who uses the metric system, that was a mind blower watching him measure out that thermocouple.
This video was the pits, and I am all for it.
Franklin walking way from the camera like he forgot cookies in the oven
This guy is very entertaining. Thank you.
I did not realize how informative this video would be
Never would have thought this to be true but kettle style is my friend for long cooks granted allot of attention needed.
You make me wish I had a back capable of building a pit! Thanks for the inspiration/aspiration!
This is old like 10yrs or more but still i would like more
I love this series. I bet I have watched these on KLRN / PBS 20 times.
A man of many talents. I'm impressed.
Turn the tank so the open holes are facing the ground and just leave it for a day or few. Propane is heavier than air, it will empty out like water.
AF is proof that simple is best. Bbq doesn’t need to be rocket science.
Good video.. it’s pretty funny that this tank was just found in the wild down a little hill in the forest. I’m going to have to go propane tank hunting in the woods.
Let me know when you find a wild flock… I would like one too
I wonder where his shop is located? The piney woods reminds me of my old house in Bastrop that was burned out in wildfire. I so miss my house and the amazing trees that attracted me to the area in the first place.
Would be a joy to spend a day just learning from ya awesome video
Yeah, that's one fine looking barbecue pit.
WHY DOESN'T MINE LOOK LIKE THAT?!
I Believe that, Propane gas does not rise in the air but hangs low to the ground when it’s allows to leak out of the tank. I'm gonna build one of these FOR SURE!!!
Smitty's is a treasure. Their BBQ is outstanding.
That used to be the original Kreuz market.
The sideburns get me everytime.
Smittys . Best bbq anywhere ❤.
Wish I knew where to get those grates.
Absolutely excellent. Best TH-cam clip I’ve watched….love it
Loved this, Aaron is a great entertainer and cooker
Sweet!!! Just what I needed!
I think that was genius the way you got that sharpie marker.
Seen this guy in the movie chef! Great movie
Awesome thanks 😊
Speak when you are angry and you will make the best speech you will ever regret.
American welding brand 250 gallon tank from early 2000’s… great tank for a smoker.
“Propane and propane accessories”
to the bug-a-bago!!!
That intro was really impressive
How do figure or calculate how tall the smoke stack should be?
Smitty's is on Commerce and W. Market in Lockhart Texas. I think there's a Firestone service center next to it or something like that. There's another eating joint across the street from them called Henry's. Both has good food. BTDT.
How do you estimate your firebox size?
Love the video and your smokers .. Have you ever considered building a cabinet model in a reverse flow configuration
Would love to hear about cooling initially to clean and season the tanks before putting something on it you’ll actually eat. A rusty propane tank doesn’t sound like a good idea.
Aaron, you have to have the handle on that grinder. It's like a squirrel tail, for balance.
Ooooh, I remember seeing this episode about 4 years ago or so.
I understand fulling the tank with water before cutting and welding, but why soapy water? Great video, thanks for sharing!
Helps breakdown any oils still in the tank
I have 2 wsm and i never use the water pan at all. Not even as a heat deflector and it holds temp very well
Nice backing skills bro!
Would love to see you show up at a competition on this video series!
Thx!
We have waited so loooong for new Vids!
Props for grinding that without a long sleeve 😂
Driving with your forks too high and you changed directions without a horn signal. That's a write up Aaron. Haha
1:41 "has a hemispherical head which is great for airflow." Is Dodge making propane tanks now?

My respects to you. You can do it all. 👏
You should review the unique BBQ pits of Chicago.
Why use the grinder when he has the cutter? Is there a "cleaner" edge?
Do you have any problems with doors warping when you can them out?
The Alton of BBQ
Good detailed video 👍🏻👊🏻
Bethesda and Nikki Six, I like this guy
The wallet controls my level of bbq equipment. For the money you can't beat a WSM,
Dude’s a Pitmaster, Craftsman, wielder, and forklift operator 😮
So a normal Texan 🤷🏻♂️
R.I.P Johnny Hardwick.
I don't get the 'we don't use thermometers' pride from some cooks. I used to do the same until I realized that there is literally NO reason not to use one. Anyone's cooking will only get better and more consistent if you use a thermometer.
Ah yes, “turn of the century” 23 years ago, the good old days
@21:00 I guess you already knew your ground was level. lol
Don’t call it a pit, call it a cooker 😂😂😂🎵🎼🎶
Wow that’s cool.
3:30 you could also do a Nitrogen Purge
WOW!!!
