    I see a lot of questions about which ingredients do or don't kill bacteria. Common antibacterial agents beyond chlorhexidine include alcohol, cetylpyridinium chloride, and triclosan. Saltwater kills some bacteria but not as many bacteria. This study found that saltwater was as effective in many ways like reducing plaque: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28914244/

      I've Brushwood salt for years it's how I add to my iodine supplementation!
      And in a past video you explain how sea salt has a degree of plastic in it...... that's another way that saltwater is not refreshing unless you're a saltwater fish😁

      @@BeardedDevil-cn9tw not really because I started to write it and my phone battery died and it was probably three times the words yours was.
      I will still respond to your question because it's in the overall content that I am compiling for my own literature on educating people passed the stereotypes and usual answers. That are provided and accepted when people don't go deep and research more on the subject or seek out personal experiences.
      What you have presented is generalized information and it all can be addressed.
      To say that beans are the only source of protein is ridiculous because all Wiggins know that the same protein that is in animals is no different than the musculature of your mother or father or pet dog...
      ... if you can show and prove to me that your nails and teeth can bite into the skin of an animal and rip it open and that you can eat raw me endlessly without having Refrigeration I will say that you were born to be a carnivore and I have not seen anybody that is capable of doing that yet....
      .... and for the amount of extra weight and mass that we place on our skeletons for eating four times as much protein that meat offers over what is suggested by the FDA for a balanced diet based on our sizes ages and genders, many people will over work themselves to death doing jobs they can't really do without the extreme diet and pushing their body to those limits which also taxes our Healthcare System and hospitals and medical circumstance because of all the complications people have with their bodies do to a meat-eating carnivore diet and milk.
      Just like the omegas that are found in fish that actually come from plants which also are the only things to produce protein in reality, there are a plethora of other chemicals and greases and oils that people have in their system because of cooking and eating meat that they probably pass through a percentage of those nutrients without even utilizing them in their body as well as causing emotional and physical imbalances due to the hormones steroids and adrenaline and antibiotics that animals have whether they are natural or not.
      Add to that the lack of sensitivity that many people that eat meat have because of those greasers and interruptions in their system, the degree of mental and emotional imbalance has has been hindering our society in many ways to cause disgruntlement depression dysfunction and anger not specific to any community at all.... to which I can attest most vegans are aware of.
      I ate meat for the first 44 years of my life and my family was poor and we had Gardens and my father hunted to put food on the table.
      In October 20th I will be vegan for five years and I did it for mental reasons but the amount of physical benefits that had come with this I would not gamble to go back to eating meat because I see how dysfunctional and inept and limited the world can be.
      I could care less about other people killing animals because I'm not going to stop it and that's not the why reason that I accepted this nutrition plan that works for me.
      I am very fortunate to have a lifestyle where I can spend the time researching and feeling out my body to see what affects me differently now that it is clear and better circulation I know what foods bother me and I am cultivating a list of things that flow with my genealogical makeup which not everybody has the same.
      Just imagine how many people are allergic to Soy and yet their bodies don't tell them and their brain is jiggling around because of it.
      As an artist I use paint with chemicals and I enjoy rebuilding Motors and the use of petroleum for hot rods and muscle cars and I like science and technology that would not be possible without petroleum products.
      On the subject of mothering I would say that people would be less likely to get breast implants and not have complications breast-feeding or the fact that milk may be tainted by chemicals and hormones in meat to the degree that it is dysfunctional which people are relying on baby formula in these current days we are seeing these perspectives come to light.
      I would love to sit down and do an interview with somebody valid and prominent within the vegan Community to share my personal experience because I can guarantee I have felt and seen things that most people are not aware of within this world and structure of our society and within the sensitivity of our bodies to compile all these things in a way to give information which is my goal here.
      I was enlightened to see your comments and questions and not offended for either of them as I wish you have mutual feelings about my responses.
      I have gained a lot more patients on this nutritional plan and I do intend on delivering a more concise and informative piece of literature in the future whether it's in an interview or as my own creation to share.

    Interesting. My dentist doesn't want me to use mouthwash, because she says it kills the oral microbiome. And that poses a greater risk of cavities.

      When I got a professional tooth cleaning I was also told to not use mouth wash, especially not those that contain alcohol.

      I would agree with her 100%. Want fresh breath in the morning? Chew on a few chopped pineapples in the morning. The citric acid from those will clear away any nasty smell or taste in your mouth.

      The dentist told me just to brush with paste and that's it. Maybe use special mouthwash occasionally if you have any gum issues but proper brushing shouldn't need support of mouthwash.

      @@ko_tech There are simple mouthwash recipes that aren't destructive. Are you familiar with Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn? He tells people brush your tongue so the nitrates can build up and be accessible to carried into your blood stream and become Nitrous Oxide.

    The warning against using mouth washes (with or without denaturated alcohol) has been out there for quite some time. They were deemed carcinogenic and frankly useless. PERIOD!

      All the data that shows damage to the oral microbiome is from the use of prescription strength Chlorhexidine - no other mouth rinse. The headlines of the studies are very confusing - but if you read the text you will discover that no other mouth rinse has been implicated. This is a false narrative put out by competitors of Listerine and by the media - who obviously did not read the studies. As a DDS Listerine is an essential oil mouth rinse that is as gentle as water on the oral microbiota - and it can be effectively used to improve the oral microbiome and reduce damage from plaque.

      Your statement is not true. There was one study that sugegsted Listerine was a problem - but this was later retracted. The study was done in a petri dish in the lab. In the mouth you have to consider the effect on the complex oral microbiome - in vivo. We should about the health of the oral microbiome - but Listerine is not the culprit - I assure you after 50 years as a DDS. Everything you dink - all day long - is technically a "mouth wash" so how can it be damaging? You need 40% alcohol and in a dry, non-greasy condition to have any antibacterial effect. These conditions do not exist in the mouth and Listerine does not have enough alcohol to be classified as an antiseptic in the mouth. The only mouth wash shown to cause damage to the oral microbiome is the prolonged use of Chlorhexidine. NOT Listerine and NOT any of the other rinses on the store shelves.

    I've had LPR for a while which is mostly resolved after being vegan, but I still get throat mucus flare-ups particularly when I brush my teeth and a lot more when I use mouthwash. This speaks to me, thanks for sharing.
    Edit: also I have a huge love of beets, perhaps because my body needs nitrate !!

    I remember learning about this in one of Dr Gregor's videos about the athletic enhancement afforded by the consumption of beets. Apparently, mouthwash ruins that.

      As a DDS I suggest beet supplements to support denitrifying bacteria that are central to oral health. These bacteria live on the back of the tongue and create nitric oxide that helps support cardiovascular health and breathing.
      50% of the body's nitric oxide production is from the nose and the mouth - so treat your oral biome well if you are an athlete or simply want to enjoy the benefits of nitric oxide!
      The idea that mouth wash is bad for the oral biome is ridiculous. You may want to avoid one mouth rinse - ( one that is sometimes prescribed by dentists and frequently used in hospitals during COVID)...... this rinse is Chlorhexidine. Chlorhexidine is the only rinse shown to potentially damage the oral biome and usually it requires several days of rinsing or after prolonged use.

    Due to this concern, I began preparing my own mouthwash using a recipe by a dentist whose website has recently become unavailable. The recipe contains cloves, turmeric, arginine, sodium bicarbonate, and calcium carbonate and is similar to others that are still accessible. Also, many studies found mouthwash with green tea or plant extracts to be as effective as commercial mouthwashes.

      If you are a woman - as a DDS for 50 years I cringe at this recipe - so be careful ! The mouthwash you have created could cause sensitivity and gum recession in your mouth. The baking soda is going to strip your teeth of the healthy oral microbiome and also green tea could - combined in this - damage the bacteria in your mouth. All the studies on green tea were with men - and yes, the studies showed green tea could reduce plaque in the mouth....but today we know that this is an out of date concept. Plaque is not a "thing". Plaque is an imbalance in the oral microbiome. You don't want to strip teeth of their microbiome covering - you want to adjust its bacterial content. Far better, would be to dissolve xylitol in water and rinse with that. Xylitol feeds the good bacteria in your mouth.

I don't think I knew about the second pathway with arginine, thanks for that too. I dont use mouthwash, and eat all four of the arginine sources, rather too much of them, every day so I'm covered, ha. ✔

    I also saw so many videos by dentists that explain how mouthwash contribute to erectile dysfunction a lot because of destroying the bacteria that produces nitric oxide.

      We cannot label every liquid on the oral care shelf as "mouthwash" and be afraid of them. THIS is plain ridiculous.
      Every liquid we drink - from milk to vodka is a "mouth wash".....very few liquids affect the oral microbiome.
      Yes, nitric oxide production in the mouth is essential for cardiovascular health and breathing.
      The nitric oxide pathway relies on a healthy oral microbiome - otherwise we may loose up to 50% of this production.
      There is ONE mouth rinse to avoid. If you carefully read beyond the headlines of the studies on this subject - you will find a few were not done scientifically and were later discredited. The studies that were done well showed that the rinse that causes potential biome disruption is prescription strength Chloorhexidine. This is a rinse used by periodontists and after oral surgery. Definitely do not use for more than a few days. Lieterine had the same effect on the biome as water.
      BUT don't be afraid of Listerine, Closys or ACT. These are rinses that can be used to support oral health and increase nitric oxide production. I have been an oral health educator and DDS with a mission to improve oral health for over 50 years - so I consider I am well researched - both clinically and academically - on this subject. Here is the link to the study that shows Listerine is NO MORE disruptive than water: M. Woessner's study shows Listerine has no more effect on plasma nitrate and BP (and thus the oral microbiome) than water.

      @@thelostbassist450 I’d recommend figuring out what you want your mouth rinse to DO. Each liquid we put in our mouth creates an effect. Even water diluted our saliva.
      The question is - “do you have a healthy mouth” or do you form plaque, do you get cavities, or suffer from gum disease?
      The reason for a mouth rinse added to oral care - should be because it brings benefit. My strategies for adults include 3 mouth rinses and their combined benefit can take someone with an awful history of dental disease to a state of health in about 3 months.

    Chlorhexidine gluconate is an effective prescription mouthwash meant to be used temporarily and specifically for gingival inflammatory conditions. It is not a component of the average OTC mouth wash and it also stains your teeth. Mouthwash is an adjunct to brushing and flossing and not necessary. Alcohol is a common ingredient in most mouthwash which will certainly wipe out good and bad oral bacteria. Save your dough and focus on thorough brushing and don't skip floss. Gently brush your soft tissue (cheeks etc) including tongue and you can skip the mouth wash. Oh, and warm salt water rinses are great for gingival swelling and inflammation as needed. Free advice from an RDH. . :)

    After brushing my teeth and before spitting, I will add a bit of water to my mouth and use the toothpaste water as a mouthwash/gargle. If using a generic fluoride toothpaste, would you see this as a safer alternative? Any thoughts?

    Yay a new video! I watched and watched the channel for a new video and kept seeing the Liver Muscle-head video as most recent. 🤣
    I have a big bag of kale in my fridge right now. I eat 1 ounce and just to make it palatable I microwave it plain for 1 minute. When I eat it I chew it a good amount of time as recommended by Esselstyn. That produces more saliva, breaks up the cell walls more and mixes saliva with the kale.
    It works for blood flow most definitely. Of course if one is not on the whole food-plant based diet then there's almost no point to kale because damage is being constantly done on the standard American diet.
    I have to reverse the damage I already created over decades since I switched to eating healthy at age 48. It has been 5 years and I have done some reversal probably, hopefully. I am eating more kale now than before, though.
    Kale has calcium and many other nutrients so the benefit is much greater than just for nitric oxide.

    I started suffering with canker sores on a somewhat regular basis when I was a child. I was advised about 5 years ago to use Listerine mouth wash and instead of getting canker sores about once a month, it went down to about 2 or 3 times total in the past 5 years. I ran out of Listerine about a month ago and coincidentally about the same time had a dental visit and the dentist told me that I really didn't need to use mouthwash, so I didn't go out and buy more Listerine. A week later, I developed a nasty canker sore. I started using Listerine again, and the sore was gone within 3 days. As a result, unless there is conclusive evidence that it is harmful, I am going to keep using it.

      The micro biome stuff is the scariest. Why would we need a product that has existed for what, 50 years, to keep
      our mouth clean? It makes no sense. We are ingesting sometning daily that kills the bascteria in our mouth. It’s like hand sanitizer, and we all know we shouldn’t be using that either, as it is significantly preferable to just use soap and water. You can find online the insane benefits of protecting your micro biome. Maybe there are limited studies that talk specifically about mouthwash, but since your micro biome includes your mouth, you can apply the same logic there

    Interesting! I remember I had sore gums in one area for a few weeks a while ago. It got really inflammed and painful. I bought mouthwash, used it for 3 days and the issue was gone forever. So I treat it a little like painkillers. Use it only when neccecary and other options are exhausted.
    I DO NOT use it for good breath.

    Thanks for covering this. Others such as Dr. Greger have mentioned how some mouthwash are actually very toxic and should be avoided. The only mouthwash I use now is hydrogen peroxide mixed with certain essential oils like clove bud and oregano and peppermint oils.

      @@smilebot484 You're confusing hydrogen peroxide with alcohol. According to various studies, essential oils and hydrogen peroxide only kill off some bacteria, not all of them like alcohol does. Been using them long enough to tell the difference.

    I have a question. I recently saw an article that said that plasmalogens reverse signs of aging, but all the sources seem to be from animals. I feel like when people eat a balanced vegan diet they look like they’ve reversed aged too. My question is 1. Are there vegan sources for plasmalogens? 2.     Water extract of Acacia bark or walnuts bark with some glove essential oil drops work better for oral health and hygiene as mouthwash than the commercial antiseptic mouthwashs

    5 years ago, I used the alcohol-free mouthwash (developed / recommended by a dentist-brand, bought at major "everywhere" store) and it took my lip skin off! Looked like a really bad scaley painful sunburn. I looked at the ingredients and one of them was sodium hydroxide...as a soap maker, I know what this ingredient is...LYE (yes, the stuff in drain cleaner). I stopped using that mouthwash immediately and used a natural ointment for a month and lips eventually healed (and it never happened again). Also, I didn't use chapstick for a while because most contain salicylic acid (yes, the main ingredient in facial peels). YIKES!!!

    It is amazing what is not known about the products and medications, and we find out later the damage that is possible. The study about mouthwash and blood pressure is pretty new. There may have to be labels put on the mouthwashes warning of this side effect.
    But frankly, the high blood pressure may be a symptom of other damage, such as to the endothelium. I wonder if there's a risk between angina and mouthwashes, or heart attacks and mouthwashes.
    We know antibiotics can nuke a bunch of bacteria in our stomach but of course if it saves our live of prevents a loss of limb, of course there's a benefit. It makes me very careful about medicines and products.

    Never thought mouth wash was that necessary.. a lot it used to dry your teeth out, perhaps that wasn't the alcohol free stuff.
    A video on chewing gum would be alright, the dentist still recommends it after meals/coffee, even if you don't chew it long (not good for gas and bloating is it)?

      You bring up an interesting point. The information presented here is skewed. The ONLY mouth rinse that has been found to create oral health problems is a prescription rinse called Chlorhexidine. As a DDS I have never prescribed this rinse in 50 years of treating patients.
      Over these years, however, I have noticed, however, you can damage your oral microbiome with frequent use of peroxide or baking soda - especially if you have a dry mouth. The damage is seen as tooth sensitivity and receding gums. If you develop any of these dental issues - stop peroxide and try using a dilute sodium fluoride rinse like ACT.

My take away from this and other information is that anything that indiscriminately 'kills' all bacteria is bad news. The 'good guys,' get wiped out with the bad, creating the 'disturbance in the force.' Then, the bad dudes repopulate with a vengeance and chomp to Womp Town.

Biofilm - when populated with a diversity of good bacteria - is our mouth’s best defense against the “bad guys”. Development of a healthy microbiome should be everyone’s goal.

    I just started using mouthwash again! I smoke a lot so since alcohol cleans dirty glass i figured it’d clean any smoke build up in my mouth too 😅
    I use it at the end of the day though, which seems like would be less problematic than in the morning? Im young and relatively fit so Im not super concerned about cardiovascular health right now so I’m probably fine

    I don’t use mouthwash- The gum area where I had a root canal years ago became infected and one thing that strangely worked for me was peeling a small clove of garlic and putting it in that area. I’d bite into it periodically to release the water/nutrient components. It did heal my gum area though!

    I have had 3 gum grafts. I don't have diseased gums, as in bleeding and swollen; they're just receded due to my genetics. I don't use mouthwash but I do rinse with diluted H2O2. I have exposed roots and mouthwash stains my teeth. My dentist actually swabs and makes slides of my mouth bacteria and I have healthy ones (L. bifidus, Lactobacilis) and don't have a noticeable amount of staph or clostiridium. My dentists have always said my home care is good, I just have crappy genetics.

    This is so interesting! Can someone please explain these tiny points though?:
    1. If toothpaste is designed to kill bacteria too, wouldn't this also be bad for the bacteria digesting nitrates? Is it just a matter of scale? Is chlorhexidine alone just really bad/strong and everything else is "alright enough" or doesn't target those bacteria?
    2. If tongue scraping gets crud out of your mouth, why is it good for those bacteria, rather than just scrapes them out/reduces their population?
    As you can tell I am not a biologist lol, please tell me what I'm missing...

    Aww, man for a second I thought you were going to say the "nitric oxide society" was a social club where everyone dressed up in fancy clothes like royal people wore in the 1600s so they could all eat copious amount of green leafies together using a ton of subterfuge and terrifying passive-aggressivism about things like who ate which salad dressing...
    In other news, a lot of dentists actually have been telling people for a few years now to use a lot less aggressive mouthwashes and to dilute it and only use it during irrigation of the teeth for this very reason. Really strong mouthwashes can kill so much bacteria that it can actually cause a disgusting condition called "hairy black tongue". Don't search for that one on google images.
