Changing 1981 Goldwing Oil & Filter

  • Video I took when I was changing my oil and oil filter on my vintage 1981 Honda Goldwing GL1100. The filter bolt became stripped so it was pretty nasty getting the filter cover off. The "author" (me) has NOTHING to do that this video will not play on ipads or smartphones-- this is TH-cams great "syndication" policy. They want me to change my audio music (which I payed for) in order to allow the video to be shown on other devices. I have worked too hard on my videos to give in to this stupid policy.........something they GREATLY need to change.

Good job Tak, thanks for this. I just got an 82 Aspencade, changing the oil for the first time this weekend before I bed 'er down for the winter. I've got a '79 CX500 too, and never even considered this problem. The oil filter covers comes off very easy, no need for someone to have tightened yours so hard. I would have done pretty much the same thing. Safe and happy riding to you man.

Thanks for taking the time and posting the video, now have a better understanding of all the parts and what to look out for when I do mine, going to view a GL1200 this week.
    Best wishes

In all cases like this use a fluted socket set. Purposefully designed for removing stripped head bolts. Vice grips are designed to wreck the heads of stuck bolts :-)

I am dealing with the same problem on an 83' GL1100. I have damaged the heads trying to break it loose. I didn't consider the torch. Will try that next. Thank you for taking care of this problem for me.

Good luck and I hope it works! There were a lot of great comments from other people.....I like the idea of welding a socket to the head, but I am not a welder and have no tools for that. I just did what I could and the heat helped. I hope you get it!

I feel your pain there dude! Good job in the end. I`m only watching this to figure out how to check my oil. I`ve an 82 1100GL. Been told small window, flashlight, centre stand (ball acje to put her on centre, backbreaking). Cheers.

Good job! I have the same bike 1981 GL1100, so far never had that problem. For emergency in your case, using a pipe wrench on the round outside part of the bold helps, also grinding down the bolt head and welding another bolt head to the bolt will work but the best way next to getting a dealer original part is to look on Ebay, all parts for GL's are very cheap, you could find that bolt, filter housing, spring and washer for about @10.00 to @ 40.00, look it up. I love my 81 Gold Wing!

Weld the biggest nut that will fit, over the damaged end. No more problems.

Lol my man if he couldnt get a socket to fit, AND EVEN WORSE, USED A PAIR OF VICE GRIPS, WHAT IN THE WORLD makes you think he can use a welder or even begin to fathom what the process ensues?

84 gl1200A happened many times. Used a small pipe wrench to get it off. Only use 6 point sockets or box end wrenches now and have had no problems. Buy a good named brand tool for quality and tolerance.

I had the same issue with my bolt on my 82, I sacrificed an old 10mm wrench, bent the closed end. Then I welded it to the bolt head. Of course this was only to get by until I could get a new one.

Same problem my 1983 GL1100. A GOOD service warning of the danger in oil change :-) and steering out of the skid. Mine looks same too - Samsonite on a black. The carbs got pretty clumsy when cold and it took about a year of fuel additive and but apparently some blockage dissolved and now all cylinders firing when idle and cold. BTW 1200 starter LOOKS the same but won't fit. Couple thousands larger shaft diameter.

  • @randallcrawf
    @randallcrawf 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

grind the end down smaller and put a nut (bigger sae if necessary) over what you ground off and weld a good bead in the middle, keep the bolt as cool as possible so as not to damage the rest of the bolt.

I'm having the exact same issue with over-tightening of an oil bolt, in my case an oil drain bolt, and the thing just won't break free. I've had PB blaster sitting on it for a week, but I guess I'll try the grinding and heating next.

For all you beginners out there that have a "rounded bolt" on your task . Almost every tool maker out there has a set of sockets made just for rounded bolts that in most cases WILL REMOVE ROUNDED BOLTS. They are fairly inexpensive and will deacrease the time needed to remove the damaged bolt head .
As for this specific bolt . simply find a nut bigger than the bolt head and take it to a welding shop and ask them to weld it . Probably $20 but well spent "DONT REINSTALL DAMAGED BOLTS!!! " .

try the "shake the baby" method? Where ya get a socket that fits on it and jerk it back and forth fast and hard till you get it off. A squirt of WD-40 helps too. This video at least helped me locate the drain bolt on my 1983 GL 1100, so thanks for that! :)

Breaking bad bolts lose. Tap on the end of the bolt with a hammer. If the nuts starts to strip, DO NOT use a vise grip. Instead use heat and then a pipe wrench. To repair a bad bolthead, find a large nut that will fit over the old bolt head. Grind the old bolt down if need be and then weld the inside of the nut to the old bolt head.

  • @spudtak

  • @Jesselcify

If you insist on using a pair of Vise Grip's to remove this specific bolt just simply clamp the big round part behind the bolt head and you may want to hit the head a few times with a hammer first though . good luck !!!

"I'm not blessed with patience." Oh, really? No shit.
Before you completely chewed the shit out of the bolt head, you should have tapped on an SAE socket to the end of it, and used a conventional ratchet.
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. If the vise grip isn't working.... stop. It isn't going to get better.
