Just done my shadow!! But I used gear oil to rise the system…. I don’t like mixing oil and gear oil…. ( many will not agree). It causes acidic reaction and eats the gears….. I’m not kidding here.. I’m heavy equipment mechanic, there’s 2 types of gear oils in trucks…. Mineral or all purpose…. If mixed those two together….. very acidic and eats those gears…. I’ve drained few those gear boxes….. dang!!!! Slow syrup metallic metal gears ozzing out and had to open fill cap so air get in…. After seeing that… I wouldn’t mix any oil regardless. Factory does tons of testing, chemistry of these oils, many companies spend millions of dollars every year for research.. it’s always wise stay with same oil as possible. Unlike my father in law says “oil is oil”!!! Apparently, I studied oil in college. I’ve seen many results. I have gear oil in my garage that’s 60 years old, heck thicker than today’s oil. Lol… believe what you like.
It is great maintenance, I supply my shop for winter maintenance, preparing for spring!!
DelBoy!!! Nothing personal here!! Sharing what people should be aware.. my Dad used put quart additional tranny oil to break in newly rebuilt engine, ( those were olde days) .
Loved my Goldwing!! Bought mine from government court auction.. $1200.00!! Had it 1993,( 1990 GW 1500).. bought trailer and tent trailer for it later. Built a rack on tent trailer for bicycle on it… had lots head turners and pictures snapping going by.. I was popular on camp grounds, no problem getting invited for dinner for conversations!! Lol.. now I’m looking to put side car on it someday as I’m getting older. Maybe exchange my bicycle for wheelchair 🙃 if ever comes to that.. 😂
Sidecar?? Now I love sidecars.... it's something I've considered more than once and yes indeed as we're all getting older (and a heart attack under my belt as well now), it'll stay on the list!
@@Moonfleet41 … yeah… sidecar… been doing homework’s, deciding sidecar or trike conversation… trike cost 5X more and kinda opt for sidecar… watching TH-cam and studying opinions… I chose sidecar so I can take my big mutts with me.. problem is one mutt is a k-9 dog and my chances lessen getting invited for dinner??? ROFL !! 🤣😂🤣😂. Think it be Kwel though.
@@Goldwing1500rider For my taste, i prefer a sidecar in place of a trike for passenger comfort and convenience, plus they hold an old school romantic charm for me too... for those if our grandparents generation a motorcycle combination was a simple vehicular choice when they were a young couple and couldn't afford a car yet, it was almost a right of passage.!

I did this yesterday. Super easy! I put a longer hose over the silencer and into the hole, so I didn't remove the silencer 😁. I filled one time, went for a 15 minute ride, then changed again. 😎

Enjoyed the video Del, nicely done. Had a 1996 1500 many a year ago, beautiful bike, put 157+ miles on her before moving on to the 1800 series.
Like you, changed the rear end/differential oil on a regular basis. However, I never had to remove the
Shroud or muffler. I was able to easily remove both plugs, drain and refill the unit. Obviously removing the Shroud/muffler made the job a bit easier, but like many riders, didn’t have access to a MC lift, always lying on the floor.
Enjoy your vids, very informative, please keep them coming. Oh, and learned/liked the part of cleaning out the unit prior to the inserting the new oil.
Thanks for your kind words Sir, im glad you enjoyed it, you are right, you can just about reach in and get to the plugs, specially with a syringe to fill it again... but i make a point of taking my silencers off once a year (for this procedure if nothing else) and that means they stay easily removable and don't seize in place.. plus of course, i wanted visual access for the video so i could demonstrate it with a clear view too..!!
@@Moonfleet41 I did the oil change in the final drive on the Goldwing 1800 a couple of days ago. I lay on the floor and used an oil can with a flexible tube and did not take the exhaust off. The fill amount was 4 ozs in the manual but regardless of the amount used when it drains out of the fill hole your done, when the bike is level of course.
Didn't think you worked on Goldwings! I just bought a GL1500! I found a project GW in Florida but too cheap for $550 to get it to Washington State. I find one North of Seattle, owner needs to sale to clear out storage shed for new $ million home build! No one is buying Goldwing on area because of Gov Inslee lock down, so he made me a deal! Very Cool your working on Wings!

Empty boxes stored on bike, an so much dust couldn't tell what color it was but I didn't care what color. Wind from I-5 while on trailer blew dust off to reveal painted desert airbrush scenes around bike! Cool!
I've watched your riding videos as well as original small work space to new shop. Being from NW Oregon & Washington, I see two differences in riding. One, naturally biggest observation, someone rides on opposite side of the road, you or us? Secondly, your roads an lanes are all so much narrower than our hwys & roads! How are you coping with the Wing an your Narrow road ways with so traffic?
@@timbarnett3898 Hi Tim.. we have motorways too obviously, 4 and 5 lane freeways between cities etc, its the majority of roads in rural areas that are narrow and tight, but of course we grow up on this and it's just normal to us, so no big shakes.. throwing the Goldwing round them is hilarious fun, you do need to focus though and master a bit of counter steering..! and as for who drives on the correct side of the road..? well the Romans left us that legacy, so it's been here for a thousand years....but what's more interesting is how it changed from left to right when America kicked the English out ! somebody must have made that conscious decision at some point right ? no cars then obviously, but horse drawn traffic still had to pass each other ! interesting debate, (if a little pointless maybe..lol)
@@Moonfleet41 I'm trailing bike home on I-5 S.when couple on GW 1800 pull up next to my window. She yells over to me, nice bike! Yeah, I'm just now bring it home! They drop back, observe goldwing an pull up to my window (on your opposite side) again! It's got all kinds of accessories, can we ask what you gave for it? I told them, an they both laugh, you just bought a Markland trailer hitch an got a bike attached for free! they laughed again, gave me a thumbs up an were off down freeway!
I just bought a new Wing two weeks ago and I'm going to be changing all the fluids to set a baseline for future changes. Your video is a fantastic help for a simple procedure. I just wish I had a lift like that. Ride well!

For the first time in my life in the last 24 hours i now personally care about shaft drive bikes! My dad gave me his 2006 ST1300 last night with only 27,000 km on it for my upcoming 50th next year. He loves the bike but at 73 he needed something lighter so he bought a 2013 VFR1200 with only 7500 km on it (proud of him!) I was already looking at maintenance on these machines and I though t(correct me if i'm wrong please) that they take gear oil in the final drive? Thanks as always and I promise to pay more attention to shaft drive machines now HAHA
Yes indeed sir, EP80 is what most call for, you could use one of the more modern multigrade oils like i did, this covers 75/90 so fine for the task.. Congratulations on your coming entry to the fifth floor brother, what a fabulous gift too... and yeah, i'd be dead proud of a Dad that rides a VFR 1200 at 73 ! that's hard core right there..!
Looks pretty simple. And you did alot more than I think is necessary.
Have to do this job on my old GL1100, its much easier to do as there is plenty of access. Like the flushing tip! On the GL1100 there is also a single grease nipple where the drive shaft joins the rear drive bevel casting. I always pump some fresh grease in there as I am waiting for the gear oil to drain.
What year?? I have vt1100 1986…. Pretty Kwel bike.. I’m also doing full fluid change on it. Sold my 1977 GL1000 years ago cause had kids, less riding.
@@Goldwing1500rider My GL1100 Goldwing was first registered in 1983, it’s a genuine U.K. model. It’s only covered 4,000 miles from new and looks as it has just left the Honda factory. I only use it during the summer, mainly for trips to Matlock Bath (Derbyshire) on Sunday afternoons, and also to a few of the local classic motorcycle shows. Enjoy your VT1100 and ride safe!

Hey Brother. always good to hear form you,.. you are so right, timely maintenance is the key, specially with Goldwings, these bikes have been seen to return half a million miles, but you wouldn't get anywhere near that if you neglect the essentials.. my shelf of manuals would be the first thing id rescue in a flood..lol! I was trying to read that oil container. I changed mine today and my hypoid gear oil sure looks different and thicker than that amsoil. I read transmission oil on that jug.

Great tip on the motor oil flushing the 80/90 gear lube! Thanks. Now if I could figure out why my 2002 C10 Connie has a flat spot at 5500-6500 rpm?? My 1st thoughts are a sticking slide in one of the carbs? I'm going to sync the carbs 1st, and go from there...

Looks simple. Can you make a video on how to service the drive shaft? I understand that the shaft has to be cleaned and re-greased every 10k miles. I can’t find any info on a DIY

/What are the torque settings for those bolts and for the engine oil bolt? Can you use any aluminum washers? What grade gear oil? Thanks
(P) As easy as doing my Transporter last year. VW say gear oil for life, I certainly can’t see any harm in renewing it. 👍🏻

Of course, it is a tad harder to do when you are lying on the cold concrete floor. Oh for a lift like Delboy's. It is possible to do it with the exhaust pipe still on it can be a bugger to take off.
You can do it on the floor using the main stand, but it's shaft drive cruiser bikes that can be a pain, no main stand, so you'll need some form of lift or prop stand..! (or get the missus to sit on the bike while you do it..!!! )
Steve Taylor: yep, the procedure can be performed without removing the shroud and muffler and lying on the floor. A little tighter working area, but you can complete the task.

As I was watching Dell and you recommended the use of motor oil.
I remember when you did in another video the use of motor oil in the cleaning of a bike chain and it's cleaning properties.
Yes Del is quite right in using motor oil before he gets flamed because motor oil contains amongst other things detergents and these will clean a final drive a lot better than say paraffin as any residue left inside won't harm the very expensive final drive!

Hi Mark, always good to hear from you sir, hope life is good.. ive always questioned solvent based flushing agents as there will always be a residue of the solvent left behind that will begin to degrade your new oil almost right away and could shorten it's service life... fresh clean oil does a good enough job of rinsing off any old left over gear oil and leaving it clean.. Hey!! Great teaching video. Was wondering why Ams trans fluid and not gear oil? Also, I assume the clutch & tranny are lubed by the engine oil, so that the version of Ams 20w 50 meant for the combos??
"Amsoil Transmission fluid: IS gear oil, not to be confused with Ams Primary fluid and yes, Engine and gearbox unit lubed by single 10W40 engine oil !
I went to do this on my Blackbird, but can't find the drain plug! I think I'll give up and check the valve clearances on my TZR.

For this you would use a gear oil, I put 70w in mine.

Strangely enough call it kismet since I’m way across the Atlantic in Canada this afternoon and seen that you just posted this a few minutes ago. I just took the bike around the block to heat the rear differential oil up a bit. It looks a lot easier to get at the fill and drain plugs on my Pan St 1300 than GL Gold Wing, but same 17mm plugs. The flush before fill with engine oil makes sense; Del you put the cherry on with the flush tip. Did you get the bike from a New age Viking, what’s up with the rope thang going on there?

@@Moonfleet41 Yes all things went well on Flush and change out. I had just parked the bike in garage and sat down to have a cup of coffee at my desk and looked at the lap top opened up on You Tube and seen your Final Drive Oil Change 5 minutes old.
I thought well WTF the biker gods are with me better watch it before I get started. I’ve done the dif change before but never heard about a flush and had an extra litre in my cabinet so worked out great. I’ve forwarded your videos to my Harley peeps and they’ve told me that they love that little extra tip or trick that they get from British Dell Boy Guy that has Saskatchewan plates up on his wall. I’m meeting up with them in Saskatchewan and heading out to Alberta Rockies and East and West Kootenay circuit of British Columbia, for the weekend. So this will a good “It’s a Small World” story to tell them

You should do it some time soon no time like the present, fly the bike over on West Jet dream liner from Gatwick to Calgary mid August mid September. The Bike goes when you go part of your luggage. The Alberta Rockies are so huge they don’t look real through Banff, Louise, Golden, Revelstoke south then take the Ferry over and into West Kootney Nakusp, New Denver, Kaslo, Balfour down to Creston. Then back up through Salmo, Nelson through Slocan pass up to Nakusp again then, back down to Fauquier ferry over to Monashee Pass over through Cherryville and into Vernon Kelowna ,down to Osoyoos then West on # 3 to Vancouver. Then back up on #99 through Whistler # 1 to Kamloops back to Revelstoke and back to Calgary. There isn’t anything in Europe that compares and all road surfaces are pristine. This is biker Nirvana, just google map it out.

How much final drive oil do you need to put in?
It's a "spill fill" so once it comes out of the hole that's it... should be a little over half a pint !

You made that look nice & easy , never ridden a Gold Wing, big buggers aren't they. Where did you get those stands for your polisher & grinding machines, I'm thinking of getting a bench polisher but space is limited in my shed, those stands look the solution. Hope you're both OK, raining here x👍

Check this! I get phone call from guy saying he's Mr Honda! Yeah right! Who is this really? Are you "Master Barnett"? I don't know about, "master", but yes! Do you know Frank an his friend Browney? Yeah I do, who is this? Browney is my NW rep for Idaho, Washington, Oregon California, an Frank is one of my shop foreman! Frank says, you teach school then tour America during your summers on my Honda motorcycles? Yes, I love your bikes! Because powerall industries in Bend, Oregon, I want to use your bike for a 100cc over piston system for all my 750CB in my Honda shops? So I give him my bike, Frank & Browney picked it up an I didn't see it for months! When I got it back, I found it really fast, but I found it pinged without aviation gas! So I called the number Mr. Honda gave me, an got his personal secretary! (Wow!) Sorry but I found a problem! Don't be sorry, that's why we asked you! They took bike back, Dr-tuned piston from 12:1 to 10:1, an it was wonderful! From Oregon I took it south through grand canyon, Texas, Memphis, N.O., Florida, freedom Hall in Philly, Smithsonian , Indy, relatives in Nebraska, Salt Lake City, Pendleton, an home along Columbia River! Great times an memories from just a phone call, cool!

6:30 that's not how a torque wrench is designed to work. You must pull from the handle. That bolt may be incorrectly torqued by using a torque wrench in that way.
I have to respectfully disagree Tom, it doesn't matter where you hold the wrench, as long as it's set correctly, once it clicks, you're done.
@@Moonfleet41 Hi Del, I am not an engineer but I have heard the statement I made repeated many times and my torque wrench manual even states it. It would make sense as torque is the result of multiplying the value of Force applied by the Distance from the point of application.
Interesting debate Tom, personally, i can't see how the tool knows where your hand is mate.. if you set a torque wrench barely above it's minimum, (this was 12Nm, almost off the bottom of the scale on this tool), the tool at that setting clicks almost under it's own weight if it was horizontal) so i find that holding it close to the head when its such a light setting gives way more feel, you can control it far better... but the force on the fastener must surely still be the same no.?

@@Moonfleet41 Hi Del, my Norbar torque wrenches actually have a dot on the centre of the handle, the documentation states that this dot is the point at which the wrench is calibrated and having your hand either side of this dot will affect the amount of torque applied to the fastener. The click still happens regardless of where your hand is, just at a different torque value. So actuating the wrench from halfway down the handle as you did will certainly change the amount of Nm needed to click the mechanism. You may have it set to 12Nm but having you hand half way down the handle might mean it's actually clicking at 5Nm or 20Nm. Do some tests with your wrench and see how moving your hand affects the actual torque on the bolt. Just cause the wrench clicked, it doesn't mean it clicked at 12Nm.
