The Pixies are my favorite band I'm just now discovering Modest Mouse's early stuff and can't believe they sound this great! DEFINITELY inspired by the Pixies. His screaming chorus sounds quite a lot like Frank Black and the loud QUIET loud formula is very evident.
i love modest mouse, old and new, but their old stuff is definitely the best. lonesome crowded west is one of the most genius albums ever created in my opinion.
I like how he just kinda freaks out and screams and smashes the strings with his pick, god I really wish I was around to see Modest Mouse in their drugged out phase
God man, this performance STILL sends chills down my spine. Think I caught this recording when this feller posted it a decade ago and it just solidified my love for Modest Mouse a ton. Thanks for sharing so much.
@1990forever69 It's something that the more you listen to the more you respect. I started listening to them during good news and then when I got older I looked back at their old stuff. After I listened to it a few times through i started catching how good the lyrics were. They were, are, and will remain an amazing band.
@kurt2552 I did. Top two bands. I also own some of Jack's instruments from TWS days including one of his Rhodes organs. If you were interested I'm nerding out we can link up on social media and I can share some pretty cool stuff. (Sorry if this comes across braggy, I got very lucky)
I was almost two or three when this was shot, but it's nice to have time machines to visit an era I was in yet hardly remember. it rejogges my memory. Especially for indie bands like Modest Mouse that are still going today.
toughbail, they were notorious for showing up drunk to performances regularly back then. Still, even if they do get off time, appreciate the energy. They fucking rocked this song.
I'm sorry but I love it. The whole reason I loved modest mouse in the first place, all them hundreds of years ago was exactly because they were sloppy and sounded like they recorded everything on a tape player stolen from a community centre. Plus also take into account their infamous early "drunk" gigs.
that was nice metaphor, but when it was only isaac, eric and jeremiah their music was less produced and more natural and to me that is when it was pure and at its finest and not much can come close, even themselves now-a-days. all modest mouse is good though i am not debunking them at all, and i am sure that their album coming out will prove it again.
My biggest regret in life is being born in 1998. I wasn't even in existence, let alone old enough to comprehend this was happening in the very state I was born
Isaac never admitted to being an addict. And the only song that is DIRECTLY about drugs is The Good Times are Killing me which is quite an anti-drug message.
I think it's really a shame that Cobain never got the opportunity to listen to MM - he literally missed it by a couple years and it's probable he'd have heard them in those early days because the Olympia scene was like the weirder little brother of the Seattle scene - in his last years he really believed that rock music was becoming very stale and that you couldn't do anything new with a couple guitars, bass, and drums and Modest Mouse I think would've really changed his jaded perception. I think him and Isaac would've gotten along fairly well at first.
ok anyone who thinks modest mouse is "happy" now needs to reread their lyrics/listen to the music. their "happiest" tunes would have to be their most recent big singles, dashboard and float on, and the farthest they go is saying "shit sucks but we can keep going" or "shit sucks but it could've been worse." however, lets not forget a key part of the message is still SHIT SUCKS. also, happiness and music are not antithetical. if you want to complain about someone going clean, look at jeff tweedy.
he was also poor. watch the untitled documentary that was filmed around this time, he goes shopping for beer and can only consider the cheapest options (a 40oz for less than a dollar)
No he just didnt really take care of himself, yes hes done his share of drugs but I dont think hes ever really been hooked to one substance. I know he was a fan of the Dramamine.
Both him and Isaac have struggles with mental illness. Isaac did a lot of hard drugs back in the day but I don't think it ever really got to the point of addiction - some people just have those genes where they can do a lot of drugs but the drugs wont do them.
are you kidding spookyghost? almost all of their song are about drugs... you obviously don't know the drug references. I mean seriously, it's all nice on ice? could that be any clearer for example????
Metaphors. 😑 People used to say all Elliott Smith’s music was about him doing drugs but it wasn’t. Not everyone writes about themselves all the time. Sure a few but many times the songs are inspired by people they know/have met, movies/documentaries, stories they’ve heard, ect. Don’t take things so literally.
this man was born for music
As soon as I hear that old canny audio, I knownits gonna be legendary.. whoever was touched by this man's music was lucky..
The Pixies are my favorite band I'm just now discovering Modest Mouse's early stuff and can't believe they sound this great! DEFINITELY inspired by the Pixies. His screaming chorus sounds quite a lot like Frank Black and the loud QUIET loud formula is very evident.
I know you were a spitty baby
Its October, 2020. and here I am. Missing live music.
i love modest mouse, old and new, but their old stuff is definitely the best. lonesome crowded west is one of the most genius albums ever created in my opinion.
This footage belongs in the library of congress archives. pure gold
damn. why the fuck was I four years old when this was happening.
I like how he just kinda freaks out and screams and smashes the strings with his pick, god I really wish I was around to see Modest Mouse in their drugged out phase
The things I would do just be at this show..mann
I get off to this on the reg. Thank you again!
God man, this performance STILL sends chills down my spine. Think I caught this recording when this feller posted it a decade ago and it just solidified my love for Modest Mouse a ton. Thanks for sharing so much.

So they've been awesome since the beggining? I can live with that.
The little shop bit at the end is a great a snapshot of that time period
Amazing musical genius singing and playing guitar
How can you sound so bad and so good at the same time. Only MM can do it. Maybe radiohead too.
You're forgetting the best band of all time The White Stripes.
@@MrBrodman98a fellow MM and TWS fan. did you know Jack and Isaac have the same birthday? same year too
@kurt2552 I did. Top two bands. I also own some of Jack's instruments from TWS days including one of his Rhodes organs. If you were interested I'm nerding out we can link up on social media and I can share some pretty cool stuff. (Sorry if this comes across braggy, I got very lucky)
The two bands that changed my life in unimaginable ways 🙏
Also just my 2 favorite bands lol
Pixies perfected this!
I was almost two or three when this was shot, but it's nice to have time machines to visit an era I was in yet hardly remember. it rejogges my memory. Especially for indie bands like Modest Mouse that are still going today.
wow, i love watching people get passionate!
2:26-2:29 I can do that drumming hold my beer
well that's kinda hard to do properly and not fuck everything up real quick for the rest of the band :D
This is the same year they released The Lonesome Crowded West, it really is amazing how influencetial three homeless kids can be
Whatever that is at the end looked like the beginning of an indie horror movie...and it takes place in Oregon.
Why the FUCK is everyone talking? Don't they know that in a few short years, Modest Mouse will reign prevalent as the greatest band that ever was?
It's from Portland. I filmed it cuz my girlfriend liked them. I was indifferent. Only two songs, I'll put the other up sometime....
Jason Blalock y’all still together?
thanks dude, this is history! ;)
hell yeah, this is modest mouse
thanks i love any early mouse vids, it reminds me of college in seattle
toughbail, they were notorious for showing up drunk to performances regularly back then. Still, even if they do get off time, appreciate the energy. They fucking rocked this song.
Fat or skinny, on drugs or clean.. who cares?? Good music is good music, and this is just classic! Thanks for the video and nice outro there too
xit500 Jesus Christ thank you. That's pretty much all of the comments.

That clip at the end of the people in the convenience store is pretty funny.
that was nice metaphor, but when it was only isaac, eric and jeremiah their music was less produced and more natural and to me that is when it was pure and at its finest and not much can come close, even themselves now-a-days.

drummer's a fiend ! at 2:27 he's possessed xD
Nice to see him not so docile...he's so gentle in newer videos of them.
Ha, the end is funny :D
Modest Mouse are fantastic, thanks for posting this old clip!
Pacifico1982 you call this is an old clip, but it’s almost as old to this comment as this comment is to my comment. Ain’t that wild
@@jakesorrentine9063 wild
Incredible.
favorite modest mouse song
rip
my favorite modest mouse song
Isaac was SO young. :(
My biggest regret in life is being born in 1998. I wasn't even in existence, let alone old enough to comprehend this was happening in the very state I was born
Modest Mouse, Modest fucking Mouse.
Simply there are no words to describe them.
hell yeah
yes this is great, upload the other one dude!
this is the best!
this was their prime.
Holy shit this rules.
rip jeremiah green, one of the greatest that ever did it!
old ass doritos... bad ass MM footage
i fucking love the modest mouse...
Berbati's R.I.P. 2011
@CHRONBOMBSINURBUTT69 thank you for making me not the only one who thinks their early stuff sounds like pixies.
I have always hated Modest Mouse until a friend told me to check out their old stuff...aaaah haaa the three peice, now I get it :)
I want this Modest Mouse back 😔
Put up the other songs from this show!
haha this is freaking awesome.
Does anyone know the story behind the gold butterfly necklace Isaac wore around this time in the 90's?
yeah he still does because he said it in an interview with rolling stone
stone cold classic
Plaid Pantry yes!
Man, I don't know how but, I'm feeling a Fugazi vibe here......
RacerEckss Isaac Brock said in a recent interview that Fugazi was one of his staples at this time
Yeayyeaye means yeah yeah yeraa
jerimiah is fuckin going off in this
2:17
The drummer.
you need to upload the other song.
The harmonics he plays at the end sounds like Teeth.
Do you think they new then that they would become one of the greats they are? fan fucking tastic!
Jeremiah green is the shit
4:50 IS THAT FUCKING KARP????
Yes, the next band on the tape. My Karp footage is on youtube as well
To be fair, you're posting comments in a 1997 video for Modest Mouse.
Isaac never admitted to being an addict. And the only song that is DIRECTLY about drugs is The Good Times are Killing me which is quite an anti-drug message.
wiki him, its all there.
can you upload the second video please? :)
Better than Nirvana.
True, but Kurt had a charisma not seen since the likes of James Dean.
I love Nirvana, but I agree. Modest Mouse is the best. If Brock died, the would turn into what kurk cobain became
I think him and Isaac would've gotten along fairly well at first.
both bands wish they could have been the replacements.
Almost every band is better than nirvana
Modest mouse is better than almost every other band
lol isaac is mad gangster with his pitchfork tatoo lol straight up gd
This is great! Do you have any more footage from this show?
lol is that eric judy without a white shirt and hat on?
jeremiah was much more into it back then.
@dothewrongthing Maybe for The Ship Has Sank, but not for Good News.
@xjakemarinx How he didn't break a drumstick there God only knows...
ok anyone who thinks modest mouse is "happy" now needs to reread their lyrics/listen to the music. their "happiest" tunes would have to be their most recent big singles, dashboard and float on, and the farthest they go is saying "shit sucks but we can keep going" or "shit sucks but it could've been worse." however, lets not forget a key part of the message is still SHIT SUCKS. also, happiness and music are not antithetical. if you want to complain about someone going clean, look at jeff tweedy.
plaid pantry on 23rd at the end hahah
Hey JC, who is the band shown at the very end of the video? They seem fun.
Also, thanks for all the great footage.
KARP
they really sounds like the pixies, power band!
he was also poor. watch the untitled documentary that was filmed around this time, he goes shopping for beer and can only consider the cheapest options (a 40oz for less than a dollar)
What the guitar is it?
Dima Dima looks like a jackson dinky
what's the second song? please, upload it :)
awesome video.
Ok, took me a second but the clip seen in the end is the beginning of"KARP "OverTheWall" ~ 1997" clip also found on Jason's channel
Holy fuck. WHERES THIS FROM??
@1990forever69 Wow really dude?
No he just didnt really take care of himself, yes hes done his share of drugs but I dont think hes ever really been hooked to one substance. I know he was a fan of the Dramamine.
Damn he looks skinny as hell here.
He was shooting smack at some point, though.
Weren’t we all?
jeez i forgot how skinny isaac used to be.
As you get older you will get fat too you will get fat, too soon 🎶
Brock has really let himself go... He used to be so thin.
It's a moth
substance abuse does that. feel bad for the guy - he's had such a rough life.
@bongzuki it's not a fact that either nick drake or kurt cobain killed themselves......
🤦🏻♀️
I think it was the drummer who had the issues
Both him and Isaac have struggles with mental illness. Isaac did a lot of hard drugs back in the day but I don't think it ever really got to the point of addiction - some people just have those genes where they can do a lot of drugs but the drugs wont do them.

+Dane Mullis "almost all of their song are about drugs", lol, you don't listen to much Modest Mouse, do you?
Metaphors.

I think he was skinny because he was maybe 20 years old
Checked it out, he was 22 or 23 in 1997
hahaha jeramiah @2:26
so... were they ever not amazing?
I think jeremiah likes this song haha
The girl in the store at the end is hot!
