  • Ice Cream Party is the type of band HQ musicians dream of. The multi-story space is packed with gear, oddball collectables, and a full-fledged recording studio.
For the first time on camera, Isaac Brock gave us a tour inside Modest Mouse's lair.

Isaac Brock didn’t like doing interviews back then, but he’s starting to do them more often. In my opinion, I think he’s doing more because it ends up bringing more attention to his band and in turn more money for his family. Still waiting on his Hot Ones interview.

Even weirder, Lonesome Crowded West was one of my favorite CDs in high school in the late 90s, which is just a raw ripping power trio in their prime. And I always wondered how he had such clean, unique whammy bar technique that seemed impossible to replicate. For 25 years I had no idea he was using this invention!!

I had the opportunity to talk to your dad in depth about Isaac's bee guitar. It was through email, well over 10 years ago.
He never revealed the inlay setup to me.
He said that Isaac and him have a "gentleman's agreement" to never release that information to the public.

I kinda get his point though. For a guy who's been in a successful touring band with fair variety of sound throughout his career it only makes sense that he's accumulated a lot of gear.
When he talks about the gear though he clearly doesn't have a deep understanding for each device, has just sorta stumbled upon sounds he likes.
Compare this to a modern "gear head" who can tell you everything about pedal they own and the history of it etc.

I've been a fan of Isaac's bands since I was a teenager. So almost 20 years now. I still regularly listen to his music (and play it as a guitar player of two decades who also just picked up drums 8 years ago). I actually just learned the main Truckers Atlas drum groove and have been playing it constantly lol. Jeremiah's playing was a huge reason why I also picked up drums after playing guitar most my life. So between Isaac and Jeremiah I'd say there's a lot of inspiration to go around. I also build tube amps and guitar pedals as well as restore and repair them (and old tube radio receivers when I get the opportunity) so I absolutely get the pedal obsession. I'm one of those guys who's likely to start a pedal company, build some stuff that I put all my heart into, then go bankrupt and have all my pedals end up in the "we gotta charge you something" box lol.

His version isnt as accurate as it could be but if I hadn't seen that lesson I couldn't have gotten the basics of the groove down as quickly. After I learned his version I watched some covers and looked up some tabs and refined it from there. It's such a a fun groove to play. But learning it showed me just how much work my left foot needs. Im working on keeping time on my left foot now like Jeremiah did which will help with those off beat accents. Anyways I hope you're able to learn it quickly cause it really is such sick groove.

I think about Isaac Brock all the time because of that one interview where he said the band gets drunk and runs over dogs in the van, then years later in another interview he said someone once wrote article an saying the band gets drunk and runs over dogs in the van. It’s just such a funny weird time thing, the way this one story bridged between the first interview (early in their career) and the second (after they became popular) and the fact that the article actually wasn’t making it up but rather was referring to an interview that even Isaac had long forgotten-and probably he was drunk anyway-is for some reason really funny to me.

I met Dr. Brock in the late 90’s at 1st Ave. He was claiming to be the “extreme sports coordinator” was riding around before the show on a razor scooter through the crowd- arranging pool matches between strangers. He told me that they were gonna raise the stage up a couple stories, and then just show video of the band. At the end, the band was supposed to bungee jump off the stage. I told him it was a bad idea…but it wasn’t. Later that night they were taking requests and I shouted out “trucker’s atlas” and they played it. Nice memories.

Never seen an interview with this dude but I somehow knew he had great taste in pedals. The circuit bent speak and read, unusual relationship with gear, and the decor are just the cherry on top lol.

Saw MM play at Amherst College, for free, back in I think 1998. Isaac announced during the set that he was tripping balls. They played a great set, and Isaac manned the merch table himself after the set. I can't imagine doing that while tripping, but I was pretty impressed.

It's nice to know he seems like a decent guy and is probably a lot of fun to work with. He's made some of the most original music I've heard in the five decades I've been around. Thank you Isaac.
