I'm 73 years old, seen Tool twice, and I've watched this live version of Sober countless times (not this video by The Vocalyst). Sometimes I sit there in an awe inspired stony silence and sometimes it brings me to tears. I can't think of another song that I've heard since I started to pay attention to music in 1964 that carries the emotional power of this song. Love every Tool song but this one's special.

I’m 53, when this album came out and I picked it up, I listened to it once and put it away. It was too much for me at the time but it became one of my all time favorite albums. Sober is one of my favorite songs. It is a masterpiece.
Lol I was just talking about that with my friend yesterday. And here I am watching this video today with chills to the bone, hair standing on end, tears in my eyes (if only this woman would stop pausing at all the wrong spots lol)
His body language during this song is cowered, self-contained, broken, irritated, almost fearful...he is fully in everything he does. His delivery is not only powerful, it's effortless.
@@similarsubstance4885He's not. Maynard has always been health conscious. He's playing the role of an addict on stage to fit the theme of the song. The song itself is his observations of those close to him who he watched be destroyed by addiction.
When a vocal coach is lost for words and just cant put a finger on it you know this band is unique. A successful band which stood out from the rest in its genre.
It's haunting and emotional. I am not one to really listen to the actual lyrics at first. I listen to the way the music makes me feel......I am the sort who gets goosebumps from music. Tool.does that. So that happens first I get the feeling then I hear the words usually
It's baffling that people don't like them. To deny the exponential talent of these musicians is fucking asinine imo. Danny Carrey is probably top 3 greatest drummer of all time, and Maynard's voice is one of the most unique sounds on the planet.
@@mushroomxxxzzzit kind of is. It's about a friend they had who left an answering machine message whilst drunk. But, as Maynard has said, he leaves most lyrics vague enough for anyone to apply them to their life. That's what's so great about Tool and Maynard's lyrics.
I love how serious and respectful you are in listening to Maynard. He is a former USMA Prep School guy like me. / He endured watching his beloved Mother dying a protracted death of cancer. / Bless you for your compassion.
It literally amazes me every time. Like when I meet somebody I always just assumed that they know who Tool is. They may not be a huge fan, but they know they exist.
Tool has so many incredibly powerful songs, it's hard to know where to start... Lateralus, The Grudge, The Pot, Aenima, Wings for Marie pt.1 and 2, Invincible, the list is long and rewarding. Every member of the band is a master.
@Toolarmy: We got another one! :) I recently did post on a other Tool reaction Video nearly the same Song List as Scott - only difference Two in One instead of Aenima. But its Tool, there are soo many amazing songs.
No matter how many times I hear this song, it sends absolute chills up my spine and my skin crawls with goosebumps. I don’t know exactly what it grabs in me - just like practically every other Tool song - it’s beyond mortality. Tool isn’t music, it’s a conjuring.
It's kind of Maynard's baby. He was playing the same song with Children of the Anachronistic Dynasty in Michigan in the 80s as a glam band. Crazy the journey this song took.
This is the best reaction video I’ve ever seen. I love that their performance left her speechless! That’s the way I felt when I first saw them live in 1992. That’s the official day they became my favorite band, and always will be…
I think it was this show, I remember reading that Tool accidentally ingested LSD through Gatorade that Al Jorgensen of Ministry gave them while hanging out before Tool's performance. If Al is telling the truth in his writings, I believe it. Maynard looks it.
@@TheStonedZone"accidentally". I remember watching a thing on VH1 years and years ago about how he overdosed on heroin and someone was able to save his life by putting ice up his butt and it shocked him awake
If I could only listen to one voice singing for the rest of my life, I would want it to be Maynard James Keenan. His voice touches your core in a visceral way.
Maynard is able to express that part of your soul that you hide. The pain we have in our pyschy longing and yearning for respite during our darker moments. Tool is not depressing its cathartic. Great review of a powerful singer, phenomenal performer, and overall songwriter.
This song was the open door for so many people in the 90s. It's unshakable. I appreciate her analysis of everything, but more so I appreciate she's able to truly appreciate what we all were drawn to.
He is communicating anguish, he knows it, he’s lived it and it’s raw. As a recovering addict, this song is gripping and touches the darkness some of us are fortunate to survive and many cannot comprehend. His voice is brilliant and executes such pain…beautifully.
Beautifully said. Glad you overcame your addiction. My son turned me on to Tool. He was an amazing young man and wrote poetry and lyrics and played several instruments. He struggled with bi polar and it eventually led to him being taken from this world. He identified with Tool’s music. Listening to them brings back memories of him. 😌❤️🎶
Maynard personifies beauty in pain and struggle. I have been a huge fan of his tone and lyrics, since I was 12. I am 38 now and going to see them live tomorrow! Can’t wait! 🎉❤
I'm 42 and have been with TOOL since Opiate and the early EP days, seen em 6 times now (2 weeks ago in Calgary) and it NEVER EVER GETS OLD. this is music that goes beyond life, they're aliens man.
@@ericheenie wasn’t the show incredible? Where were you seats? I’m going to assume if you guys were at Mohegan you’re from New England- just a heads up- A Perfect Circle, Puscifer and Primus in Boston and at Foxwoods next year!! 🎉🎉❤️
Your reaction was perfectly in tune with that performance. The intensity and authentic delivery from Maynard and the band is something to behold. Says a lot about your authenticity too.
You were just fighting tears. I watched another TH-camr react to lateralus, and he could not hold the tears back. Tool is the most emotional, complex, dynamic band ever. I’ve been listening since the 90’s, and to this day there are times I have to turn them off and back away for a minute so I can gather myself. Greatest band ever.
ikr! Their storytelling , melodic and literary poeticism, is profoundly moving because its so genuine. Tool has gotten me through some tough times for sure.
I'll never stop enjoying Tool first timers. This was by far the best one. The expressions, the breathing, the breathlessness, the eyes. All very real and heart felt. Your valued your opinions in this reaction video because they showed you were touched by the Tool bug. Fantastic! Bravo! Five Star! Welcome to the family.
For me it's Forty Six & 2. I dig this a lot, though. I love Ænima. Love me some TOOL in general, but I'm gonna speak some blasphemy: I don't really care for Fear Inoculum.
@@chuckclark3214 I was the same about Fear but listened to it a few more times and I've grown to love it. But on my first listen, I was just unimpressed for some reason.
My family is in the process of watching my cousin kill themselves. Nothing we do helps. It's like waiting for him to die now. So, this song kills me as addiction kills someone who was once my best friend.
I was 21 when my dad, at age 47 finally died from the heroin addiction he brought back with him from Vietnam. This song is a gut punch. I hate it and I love it all at the same time.
The thing of it is.... Hes making you feel what he felt. Everything about what hes doing. He wants u to see it and feel it. A literal transfer of emotion from one to another. He suffers from terrible stage fright also.
Yeah he expresses the dark desperation of addiction in his voice. The tired, angry, beaten down, sick of yourself, frustration that comes from hitting rock bottom and not for the first time
I've been a tool fan for decades now. Maynard's voice is hands down my favorite of all. The clarity. The tone. The fullness and the smoothness you mention. It connects with me and moves me.
Your facial reaction and emotions to what you heard, along with your verbalized interpretation reaffirmed what I felt the first time I listened to that song. Moved. Great vid!
The magic of Tool. I love how you cannot even explain what you are hearing, because it reaches down deep and grabs you in the guts. A feeling Tool fans understand too well; every, single, time 🙌
Well put, however as a fellow Tool fan, isn’t it better to be unable to relate? Just imagine if our lives were such that these song didn’t touch our soul?
I'm thankful for the countless weekends me and my buddies spent tripping balls on acid and playing Tool nonstop in high school. When you're in that state, the music itself and lyrics just take you to unexplainable places. I'm a boring 43 yr old now, but Tool literally lives inside me lol. Can't wait to see them again next month!
In my opinion TOOL has one of the strongest discographies of any modern musical act. Especially amongst those still relevant. They have consistently delivered diverse, progressive, and a "unique to them" sound without ever sacrificing artistic expression. Every song sounds like tool, but in every song you get lost in the complexities of the music and are lulled my Maynard's vocals. You are somehow always locked into a groove with the weirdest disconcerting time signatures, and your ears will never get tired of it.
Rare are the artists that sound as good live as on the album or has albums you can listen to all the way thru. Every single song is good on many of their albums.
@skeemeastwood9075 I went twice to his show at the smoothie King center in New Orleans. Now, that venue is pretty shit after the first 15 or so rows. They still sounded amazing in the nose bleeds.
Welcome to being a new fan of one of if not the best bands ever! Way back when MTV still played music videos, i seen the video for sober (my first time ever hearing of tool), i've been hooked every sense! Not only was the song just kick ass, but the video was a f**king trip!
The first time I noticed this as a kid was watching that video of Cream blowing up the Albert Hall with "Crossroads," and then being so disappointed when I heard the studio version. Since then ALL my favourite bands are the ones that sound better live, because you can feel the passion and the sheer joy they're experiencing in just letting rip.
It's Maynard's physicality that sells it. The fact that he can twist and contort his body while still delivering a pitch perfect vocal performance is astounding.
Disagree. The live song has more energy for sure but his vocal performance is definitely more raw and not at his best quality. I don’t know why all these reaction videos use live performances like this instead of hearing them at their full potential. Is it a music rights violation thing?
growing up as a tool fan, I've seen them dozens of times live, EVERY SINGLE TIME has blown my mind. One of the best bands of ALL TIME. Maynard live is unbelievable. Every show is an emotional rollercoaster and you leave EXHAUSTED. Welcome to the Tool Army.
This is honestly an amazing first song for you to jump into TOOL with. Part of what I think makes this song so _powerful_ is that the _music itself_ feels like it's in agony, suffering in the cycle of addiction and withdrawal right alongside Maynard's vocals and lyrics.
Haunting. The word to describe this performance is haunting. I have have heard this song 1000+ times and seen this video 100+ times. Every time I see this it is absolutely haunting.
I love his voice, always have. You can tell he studied music because he knows his voice is a musical instrument that completes the song. But the whole band is incredible, every member 🙌.
It’s awesome to hear and see someone become a TOOL fan. Lady this band is deep!! And then you graduate to “A Perfect Circle” my favorite TOOL song has got to be 46 & 2. This is one of those “once in a generation” bands. You can’t compare anyone to them or them to anyone else. They are amazing, they are just….. TOOL!!
Really enjoyed your reaction. As someone who is 10yrs "sober" this is my go to song when those urges rear their ugly heads. The anger, despair and self loathing that come with being an addict are portrayed perfectly and serve to remind me of a place I never wish to return to. Thank you.
Congratulations Chris, sobriety is a challenge to maintain for so many and addiction is still stigmatized and I applaud anyone who has made the strides and put in the work to make a better life for themselves and even more so to openly speak on their struggles so others can follow their lead. I don’t know you, but I’m proud of you!
Your analysis is spot on. This song, and the bands total delivery evokes a visceral emotional response from me, it literally brings me to tears every time I hear it. Seeing this particular performance, it’s further sets off all the emotions Maynard intended by his listeners.
I have never watched your channel before, but this video was recommended based on my viewing history (big TOOL fan here)... Watching you react had me in tears. That was wild. Thank you for making this video.
My favorite all-time band. So happy you have dipped your toe into this amazing band. As some have said it is a rabbit hole of technique originality and awesome music. We all look forward to you exploring more.
I feel like after she turned off the camera, she watched the performance again with her eyes closed and cried. 😭 She was on the brink. I was there with her, even though I've seen this video many times. 😍
Man, I love watching people who love music watch Tool for the first time because everyone can tell this band is crazy talented at conveying a story through emotion.
Tell me about it. I will listen to random songs a very little. Classics of course. But damn Tool I can listen to all day and it’s been 2 decades now & I can’t stop listening to them.
I was fortunate to be assigned to be a grunt on the second stage load crew at the 1993 lalapalooza show in des Moines, I really wanted the main stage assignment because RHCP was the headliner, so glad I didn't, I would have missed TOOL's performance, my jaw hit the floor and I think stayed there for the whole show, I saw how it was impacting the crowd, so I abandoned my post stageside to experience it among them for a few songs, life changed!
First time I heard Tool I was cramped into the rear jump seat of a early 90’s Toyota pickup. Three of us heading out of town for work. Middle of summer, the truck was black and the AC sucked in those things. One of the rear tires was “out of balance” so if he hit 60 it would vibrate like a bastard. He kept hitting sixty then backing off. Over and over. I already didn’t like the fucker driving but an hour in I wanted to beat the shit out of him. Then he popped in Undertow on those shitty factory speakers with just a cheapo deck and Radio shack sub at my feet adding to my cramping (probably the worst car stereo setup in the history of man). At first thought “what is this dogshit? Can’t even hear the fucking singer. Mumbling son of a bitch.” Part way through Intolerance I thought it was maybe not bad. Prison Sex came on and halfway through I thought they were pretty good. Then the breakdown and I thought “this drummer kicks ass”. Then Sober punched me in the face and I was hooked. No bullshit I remember every bit of my thought process during that whole album. When it was done I told him to play it again. He said “fuck that” and loaded Primus Seas of Cheese which I had never heard either. That asshole had some damn good taste in music.
That’s wild. I was at That show in 93 at Shoreline in Mountain view, CA. I was literally hypnotized when I heard Tool. I watched the whole performance alone. I get to see him again 30 years later for his birthday tour.
I’ve been listening to Tool for 30+ years and I still discover things that absolutely blow my mind and to this day gives me goosebumps - endless gems 💎
Watching you experience this for the first time is incredibly powerful. I still feel it all no matter how many years go by or how many times Ive listened.
I’m going to see Tool in concert for the first time in 10 days! Been a fan for 20 plus years but this will be the first time seeing them live. Cannot wait!
I haven't seen them live yet, but my buddy has seen them thrice since Fear Inocculum and said it's unlike anything you've ever experienced before. Hope you have a banger of a time!
I often tell my husband, who introduced me to Tool, that there will probably never be another voice like MJK and never another band like Tool. Uniqueness amongst musicians is getting more and more rare.
I was raised on Rush, Pink Floyd, and Zeppelin, and didn’t think there would ever be anything so incredible again, so when I found Tool as a teenager I was absolutely blown away. I never asked to buy a CD but I wish I had cuz I didn’t really get to listen to them until they put themselves on streaming services a few years ago.
Man, I totally get what you mean about not being able to articulate how this song makes you feel. It’s equal parts disturbing and entrancing, structured and dissonant. You feel uncomfortable, but you’re so mesmerized by what you’re hearing and seeing that you just let it happen and continue to experience it. To me, as one who’s fortunately never struggled with addiction, this piece is a perfect sonic representation of what I imagine addiction feels like.
Can confirm: as a recovering alcoholic and addict, this is exactly what it feels like. Empty, gnawing, desperate. Desperate to find some beautiful feeling that you will never feel again.
@@LyleAllbritton I agree with that as a recovering ancient person.. But what I heard when I was young was the anger and dread of "it's coming" and the hope that it would stop. Hope for the day I wouldn't have to endure it anymore. I'm now ancient, and don't have to endure it anymore... So I hear this in an entirely new way. More like how you hear it. This song definitely endures. And it's still so beautiful.
The duh-duh-duh has always felt like a heartbeat or pulse to me. It gets faster when Maynard sings angrily and maintains its normal pace during the verses.
This was the soundtrack of my youth. The horror of my abuse. The rage, acceptance, and gagging impotence of it. This is also the soundtrack for my recovery. There's no other band, no other voice, no other lyrics that tell the whole story for me. From beginning to end. Maynard still makes me laugh at where I am, but I still weep for my child self.
You couldn't auto tune your way to success as a rock band in the 90s. Tool, stp, sound garden and Alice in chains. They put most of today's singers to shame.
can see this song slowly sinking into her as it sank into us.. the look in her eyes as the wheels turn... to be touched by metal and it become you, songs like this make it so easy.
This is by far one of the best groups I have ever heard. Tools front man Maynard definitely brings out everything inside you when you listen to the performance. His voice is clear and very precisely toned with the feeling of what he is singing. This group musically does pull out all of the stops and frayed ends in your soul. Hearing Sober and realizing that we all have faced these questions and feelings about life and its entirety of choices and accusations. Powerful music and voices in the world that we feel! This song speaks volumes and brings chills to my skin.
Tool is one hell of a journey to be on ... Maybe the greatest of rabbit holes to fall into. You will not be disappointed, musically, vocally and message.
Saw Tool for the first time in 93' and to this day, the visceral feeling I felt then, that gnawing feeling in my gut still comes back when I hear them today. Hard to explain but they are the most talented and raw band I have ever seen.
Imagine being able to hear Tool for the first time again 😢
For sure!
Right! Live as well!
Hold still. I'll get a frying pan.
That's what I just did lol. Not exactly my genre, but they're really good. Not sure I'll fall into this rabbit hole, but i'll dig deeper
I was at a recent show and met several virgins. I was so happy for them!
I dare say that every fan remembers the shock when a Tool song fills a hole in your soul that you didn't even know was there.

Exactly the same here.
The 1990s was an epic era for music.
Imo it was the last decade. Go back to decades previous and each had substance too. Everything since the 90s has been fake/inorganic.
It was OK. The 70s is pretty much the king of music decades.
@Adam-ye6wj that's why the 90s was the last great decade, because you had great 70s, too
That’s because you have not discovered metal. All that started in the 90s.
It is the final decade of actual music.

It's baffling that people don't like them. To deny the exponential talent of these musicians is fucking asinine imo. Danny Carrey is probably top 3 greatest drummer of all time, and Maynard's voice is one of the most unique sounds on the planet.
cant put a finger on bc Who are you to wave your finger? You must have been outta your head
What genre do you put Tool in? I've always left them in their own realm.
Took has a genre? I always thought they were impossible to classify that way. Love this band.
Tool captured the spirit of addiction and desperation in a song. Its powerful.
💯 PERCENT NAILED IT!!💯🤟🙏
Don't really think this is about addiction.
just the simple, leaned forward, weird posture is sufficient to call for all the saddening pics of fentanyl addicts. Very powerful.
@@mushroomxxxzzzit kind of is. It's about a friend they had who left an answering machine message whilst drunk. But, as Maynard has said, he leaves most lyrics vague enough for anyone to apply them to their life. That's what's so great about Tool and Maynard's lyrics.
To me it personifies the dark night of the soul. We all have them.
I love how serious and respectful you are in listening to Maynard. He is a former USMA Prep School guy like me. / He endured watching his beloved Mother dying a protracted death of cancer. / Bless you for your compassion.
This performance gives me chills, its an indescribable feeling. To see other people enjoy music as much as I do makes me happy.
30 years later still hits hard
I totally agree. This song has been, and always will be, a forceful gut punch. Doesn’t matter how many times you’ve heard it.
It's been a long, long life so far. 30 years, an eternity. Hell on one hand, heaven on the other. I feel Tool, and I love the lyrics so much.

We don’t find tool. They find us in the right time
I love her facial expressions while listening to the song. It’s like you can see her thoughts coming out through her expressions
He's a perfectionist and his performances are a reflection of himself. He literally bears his soul with each performance.
Tool has so many incredibly powerful songs, it's hard to know where to start... Lateralus, The Grudge, The Pot, Aenima, Wings for Marie pt.1 and 2, Invincible, the list is long and rewarding. Every member of the band is a master.
Don't do Wings pt 1&2 unless you're ready to cry. It's a tribute to Maynard's mother, and he goes all out on it. But, eventually, yeah, do it.
@Toolarmy: We got another one! :) I recently did post on a other Tool reaction Video nearly the same Song List as Scott - only difference Two in One instead of Aenima. But its Tool, there are soo many amazing songs.
also a note about 'Lateralus' it uses the Fib Seq
Don't forget the other 80 songs plus Puscifer lol, soooo goooood
Rosetta Stoned is a great one because it starts in an odd place, but when it gets to the power notes... cuts right through me, every time
No matter how many times I hear this song, it sends absolute chills up my spine and my skin crawls with goosebumps. I don’t know exactly what it grabs in me - just like practically every other Tool song - it’s beyond mortality. Tool isn’t music, it’s a conjuring.
You took the words from my mouth. This one gives me the chills and gets me all twsited inside with his raw emotion. Spiral out brother
That’s the official day they became my favorite band, and always will be…
Maynard is in the zone on this song. Acting out the literal nature of the meaning of the song in his presence and posture. So good!
You know he wrote this long before Tool ever was? He also sang it in a very fast tempo.
@@ellzedd4113 I didn't know that. Thanks! I listen to more of APC than Tool. Very talented artist. And I hear his wine business is doing well too.
Maynard is mental here.
If I could only listen to one voice singing for the rest of my life, I would want it to be Maynard James Keenan. His voice touches your core in a visceral way.
I've said before that my idea of heaven is watching MJK live in concert for eternity.
Same! He moves the core of my soul
I’ve seen them 22 times. I remember the first concert VIVIDLY- I knew right then & there that I’d never be the same
Maynard is able to express that part of your soul that you hide.

It was like reliving the magic of hearing maynards voice the 1st time

She has been reborn
He is communicating anguish, he knows it, he’s lived it and it’s raw. As a recovering addict, this song is gripping and touches the darkness some of us are fortunate to survive and many cannot comprehend. His voice is brilliant and executes such pain…beautifully.
"He is communicating anguish" I think you nailed it. Perfect way of saying it.

I've cried to Tool so many times 🥲🤘
ikr! Their storytelling , melodic and literary poeticism, is profoundly moving because its so genuine. Tool has gotten me through some tough times for sure.
Yes.
Maynard is ❤ A Perfect Circle is also so beautiful and emotional for me
Maynard forever.
“Eulogy!” His voice in that song is perfection. Full body goosebumps every single time.
Yes. That's the best
My favorite!
I really like his vocals, along with all if the other instrumental sections, especially danny carry's drumming in pneuma..such a good song
Anyone who has ever lost a loved one to addiction is deeply touched by this song. Bless you all - you are loved.
My family is in the process of watching my cousin kill themselves. Nothing we do helps. It's like waiting for him to die now. So, this song kills me as addiction kills someone who was once my best friend.

Maynards demeanor during this performance is so weirdly, scarily enticing. Truly unique.
A feeling Tool fans understand too well; every, single, time 🙌
Feeling since the beginning. Everyone in my family shuts up when I put TOOL on.
Do you really believe that she's never heard this until now?
Tool is perfection. This performance gave me CHILLS. You’re lucky to be able hear them for the first time ahaha, I wish I could go back
I pity those who never felt, or through lack of life experiences cannot feel, the power of this band. They are transcendent.
Well put, however as a fellow Tool fan, isn’t it better to be unable to relate? Just imagine if our lives were such that these song didn’t touch our soul?
Absolutely!
One definitely need a certain level of life experience to feel this type of music
They're great, but cool it with antisemitism guy.
i have absolutely no idea how my algorithm found you but im in. this was great thanks 😅❤
The new album took taylor swift and her swifties off the charts.
Rare are the artists that sound as good live as on the album or has albums you can listen to all the way thru. Every single song is good on many of their albums.
@skeemeastwood9075
I went twice to his show at the smoothie King center in New Orleans.
You've found God's Gift to the music industry. Maynard will never lead you wrong.
The tears in your eyes is what I get after listening to this song STILL 30 years later
30 years…that just hit me.
Same here. Just hearing the beginning of the song got me started, especially the live one.
You know a band is gifted when their Live version sounds better than actual studio version
Alice in chains live in awesome 🤘🤘🤘
The studio versions sounds very polished which I like a lot, but there is rawness in his voice in the live version that I really like.
This is a perfect description!
This was my first tool song too on youtube like 15 years ago, this live version is amazing

You feel uncomfortable, but you’re so mesmerized by what you’re hearing and seeing that you just let it happen and continue to experience it. To me, as one who’s fortunately never struggled with addiction, this piece is a perfect sonic representation of what I imagine addiction feels like.
