Hiking Alta Via 1 Dolomites in 7 Days

- We hiked the Alta Via 1 in reverse. The only reason doing it in reverse was to avoid hiking in a queue - which might happen if you're hiking a popular route during the peak season. This decision really payed off but we did have to pay a small price which was 1100 meters more of elevation gain.
The total numbers for our hike were 120km in 7 days with 8400m of elevation gain.
We completed this in late August and since most of the refugios were already fully booked we had to sleep in a tent for most of the nights.

I checked out your takeahike website and was really impressed. I love the layout. My wife and I hiked the TMB two years ago and are looking for more great hikes. Thanks for helping generate ideas.
Hey Richard!
I’m happy to hear you liked the website, we really want to hear feedback from fellow hikers. 😃 Thanks for checking it out, and stay tuned for more, we’re publishing more hikes there soon!
So beautiful!!! 👍👍👍
In 6 days, I will also be going to AV1.
Thank you!
That's awesome, you're gonna love it!
Watched the video with as much pleasure as you made it. Thanks, keep going ... 👍👍
Well done!!Stunning views and soooooo relaxing to watch😍😍
Very nice footage, reminded me all stunning places I visited. I did 2 week ago in standard way, fortunately with no queue at all. Thanks
So beautiful!
This was so lovely, thank you for sharing!
Thank you Rachel!
Such a cool perspective seeing the route from south to north! A much more rewarding finish, for sure. Wonderful work, and thank you for taking the time to set up such gorgeous shots.
Thank you! I really appreciate your comment! :)
Wonderful💖
Brought back memories to a Holday in the Dolomites in the 80's (Sella)
Such a great video thank you guys, will most likely send it this summer!
Thank you!
Thank you for sharing 😀
Thank you for taking us with you. Scenery for the hike sure is something else.

Sorry you had to wait so long, but I'm glad if you enjoyed it!
Beautiful👍
amazing hikes!!!
Thank you!
Can't wait for the next big hike :)
Hi Laura. Absolutely stunning video footage. You captured the scenery really well. Lovely locations for your camp sites. Way nicer than refugios 😂. Thank you for sharing your adventure. Take care 👍
Thank you so much for your kind comment! I really appreciate it.
The one at Lake Coldai was right on the busy part of the trail, I'm surprised you picked that one. Your tent view would''ve been stunning from there
excellent !... pas de baratin et une musique sympa qui accompagne les sourires 😉
Merci! ☺
Wonderful video! I see your answers about wild camping but still don’t understand. You can wild camping if refugios are fully booked? Who is going to check that if I put my tent somewhere at high place? If I go to the Dolomites I totally don’t want to book refugios but want to stay somewhere with tent. Is it even possible?
Usually a hikers travel from Lake Braies in the direction of Belluno. First time I see the opposite. Wonderful.
Didn't you see any bears on the way? 😮
No, we didn't see any bears. I think there's a very small population of bears in the Dolomites and they are not in the Alta Via 1 area.
Love it!!! The smiles on your faces are way more impressive than the views. Did you guys bring a map or a guidebook? Which one would you suggest? Are you guys thinking of tackling the TMB as well?
Thank you for your comment! We had a map and also a guide book that I had downloaded on my kindle. We barely used the guide book though, a proper map is essential. Also I had prepared the stages beforehand so we knew how many kms and elevation gain we'd do each day.
I've done the TMB some years ago already (it was my first long distance hike I did alone), so it won't be on our hiking list anytime soon 😀
@@laueronen Thanks for the detailed info! I want to be a happy hiker just like you guys!
Beautiful scenery. How much did your backpacks weigh?
In the beginning it was around 13kg. The food did disappear quite fast thankfully! 😅
I've read that camping is not allowed on Alta Via 1 - do you have tips for someone looking to bring a camp?
Camping is not allowed there but if the refugios are full they usually can tell you where you can pitch a tent for the night. On our guide you can see more details about the subject: takeahike.io/hike/alta-via-1
Hey Laura, thanks for the beautiful video, can't resisit the temptation to be there. Hope I can do it nest year....
Would you mind tell me some infos about water source along the trail, and have much water you normally bring with you..... And food, how much you bring with you, or buy from the store along the trail.....
Thanks a lot!
Hey, thanks for watching the video!
Along the route there weren't as many natural water sources as I hoped. We would always refill at the refugios we went by and I always carried about 1,5 liters with me. Even if we saw rivers on the maps many times that wasn't the reality anymore. So it's better to plan your water refills based on the refugios you pass, and luckily there and many of them!
Same goes for food: you don't necessarily need to carry much food because you could have full lunches and dinners at the refugios. However, it's important to know that we didn't pass by any grocery store or minimarket. So it's hard to do refills regarding snacks. We were aware of this and that's why carried a lot of snacks haha!
@@laueronen Thanks a lot for your infos, it helps me a lot.....
See you on the route....
@@Camino_Fans-1525. Hey! If you're still looking for info about the hike, we have now published our web page where you can find an interactive guide for this hike: www.takeahike.io
@@laueronen Thanks a lot, should learn a lots...........
This was so cool to see. We did this hike in August as well, but we walked it the original direction. I also made a 30 min Video about the tour. Feel free to check it out.
Did you bring your own tent? I thought camping wasn't allowed, but I guess if its full you're allowed to set up tent outside the hut?
Camping is not allowed on the mountains but we had a tent to pitch only for the night (you pitch it at sunset and put it down at sunrise). Some of the refugios helped explaining where it's ok to do an overnight vivac.
Cześć. Czy mogłabyś doradzić jaki śpiwór z jakim zakresem temperatur zabierać na takie trekkingi po Alpach? Jakie się Wam sprawdziły?
Hey Grzegorz,
In all of my hikes I've been using North Face Blue Kazoo sleeping bag that has a -10 celsius limit. I'm a cold sleeper so I need a warm sleeping bag. I think for most people a bag that has a -5 celsius limit should be good enough if you're hiking in the Alps during the summer months. For example if the night time temperature is +5 degrees, I'd say it's good to have a bag that has a -5 degree limit.

Thank you
I wish you many beautiful moments :)
We are hoping to do the reverse route also! Do you have an itinerary for how you broke down the trip?
Hey! I highly recommend doing it in reverse. This is how we broke it down:
1. La Pissa -> Rif Pian de Fontana
2. -> Rif Carestiato
3. -> Lago Coldai
4. -> Mondeval (before Forcella Giau)
5. -> Lago Lagazuoi
6. -> Lago Piciodel
7. -> Lago di Braies
Hey! We have now published our own hiking website, there you can find a full guide for this hike ;) www.takeahike.io
do you think you could complete this in 5 days, how active were you each day?
In 5 days you'd have to hike 23km and gain 1400m of elevation each day. I'd say that's pretty exhausting and you'd be rushing through the mountains.. If you have really light backpack I guess it's doable but doesn't sound enjoyable.
You can see our itinerary details here: takeahike.io/hike/alta-via-1
👍👍👍
What month is that?
It was in late August.
hi! hoping to hike dolomites one day:) would like to know how did you know the directions around? was there a guide around?
Hey! We navigated the route by ourselves. We carried a map with us where I had marked the trail. Also there are a lot of signposts. I believe there are tours you could join if you want a guided hike.
Hey! We have now published our own hiking website with interactive maps for this hike: www.takeahike.io
Is it okay to wild camp in the dolomites?
Camping is illegal, but since the refugios were fully booked we asked them for advice where we could put a tent just for the night. It needs to be high altitude and "sunset to sunrise" kinda thing.
Wonderful! Brought back memories of my AV1 trip this summer too

I recall descending from Cima di Zita forcella and saying that it was a crazy long descent and that I wouldn't dream of doing a south to north route! That initial climb is just HUGE. Interesting to see it in reverse. What time of year was it? The trail looks completely empty.
We still had fresh legs and we did the climb first thing in the morning so it didn't feel too bad actually haha. We hiked in late August which is the busiest time and we did come across a lot of people hiking the classic way.
Hi guysm is this a company of Emelie Forbserg?
Hey! Unfortunately we don't have any connection with Emelie Forsberg. She's an amazing athelete though! May I ask what made you think so? 😀
Hola saludos cordiales desde Venezuela . Me gusta el estilo de tus videos. En nuestro canal queremos hacer videos de este estilo. Muchas gracias por la inspiración y éxitos en tu canal...

AV1 in the "opposite" way !
Exactly, and I highly recommend doing it that way!
