Haute Route - Hiking from Chamonix to Zermatt in 11 Days

- The Walker's Haute Route takes you from Chamonix (France) to Zermatt (Switzerland). The route connects two iconic mountain peaks, Mont Blanc and Matterhorn, and it traverses through the Alps taking you over 11 mountain passes along the way.
The hike has some variations and our route ended up being 213km with 14 000 meters of elevation gain in 11 days.
We hiked in full gear and we mixed wild camping, campgrounds, two hotels and one mountain hut.

Did this in 1982 while serving in The British Army. (2 troop, 12 Field Squadron, 25 Regiment, Royal Engineers). Zero training 12 days up the mountain, down the mountain. Best thing i've ever done. Bet you it looks completely different now without the snow?

It was quite the adventure with a really hot few days near Charmonix and finishing with some very cold, snowy days near Zermatt. Thankfully I had some good views of the Matterhorn before leaving. 🙂

11 days? Im jealous, i only had enough time to do it in 6 days, so i didnt get to enjoy it as much as id imagine one would get to over 11 days. although i still had a good time, just it was very painful for my legs.

Thanks for your comment Santi! If you're planning to do the complete and original route please be aware that the season is short with this hike, normally from July to late September.
Hope to hike it myself, did the guided mountaineering route a few years ago.
Great trip, wonderful film. I notice the route takes you north before heading south to enter Zermatt. Are there routes that take you closer to the Matterhorn like the winter ski routes?
At least on our map I can't see an option to cross the mountain range on the south side.

Just a suggestion for the future: for us viewers the 60fps has no added value, 4K does. Better to export videos in 24fps or 25fps, this gives less hick-ups in viewing the videos online. ;-)

Stunning. Did you stop before Zermat? I don't see it. What time of the year was this? Were there more dangerous sections than shown here?
We finished in Zermatt, in the last scene you can see Zermatt below. Unfortunately the clouds were stuck on Matterhorn so it's impossible to recognise it in the video... We hiked it in August. I wouldn't say there are any dangerous sections there, it's a tough hike but on a physical level.
