It looks like a sleeper but perform like Audi. Nice set of winter tires will keep her stick on the road in the snow storm. . Best bank for the buck. Cheers from Canada.
Need to remember that the typical A3 makes 30 more HP than the GLI and has the traction advantage of AWD, which tends to offset the weight penalty shockingly well. The GLI would be equivalent to only the most basic A3 trim (same HP, FWD only). Can't beat having a manual option, though!
MeltingRubberZ28 You pick up about 80 HP without further modification and you pick the same up on an A3 so that buys you no advantage at all. And regardless of the power, you still end up traction limited.
MeltingRubberZ28 No it isn't, because new for new or used for used, the difference between a GTI and an A3 is not 25 grand. And again, still traction-limited in the GTI. There is a reason a GTI TCR is a whole second slower in the 0-60 sprint than a Golf R despite similar power and less weight, and the same applies here.
I’ve been so excited for this review, I have the 2014 GLI which is the 30th Edition and this being the 35th Edition is really exciting! Awesome review again! You’re videos are just getting better and better!
I purchased a used 2014 GLI with 30K miles that had a rattling noise coming from the sunroof area and when I'd take onto the highway at around 50mph & up! I had to sell it because that bothered me a lot. Other that though I have to say I loved it, actually looks better than this new one in my opinion!
Greg Holman That’s crazy! Mine also has the rattling from the sunroof area but it goes away when I close the visor part or sometimes when it is pushed all the way back. I’ve done a few things to the car so the rattling doesn’t bother me enough that I’d want to sell it. Glad to hear you enjoyed the car as well!

Just picked up a GLI 35th Edition - coming from a previous generation GLI. Current GLI is so much better in every way. Fast, quiet and tight. Door closes with a THUD unlike previous GLI and more like they used to. I liked the Pure Grey in the videos, not so much in real life - ended up getting the Pyrite Silver. Not perfect (needs vents in back and garage door openers) but great value. Love It!

I am currently leasing an S3 and am making the move to return to a manual! To me, the S3 is actually faster than anyone needs, unless you are going to track it. I've test driven the GLI and am picking mine up tomorrow. Plenty of grunt and row your own! Bigger trunk and bigger back seat. Ventilated seats! Some chintzy materials - namely the AC controls, but nothing I can't live with. I agree with the review that the cost-cutting is wisely placed. Materials are obviously higher grade on the Audi, but not worth the premium price tag when compared to VW. A more appropriate comparison might be the A3 2.0 with sport package. Similar engine output, but again no manual!. I love 19" wheels on my S3, but I've replaced 1 and repaired 1 - over $1,000 out-of-pocket. The roads where I live are terrible though. The 18's shod in 45 series rubber should provide a nice buffer to the rims. Ride is very comfortable on the GLI - more so than the S3, but still sporty...
Hey Bruce. I’ve driven s3’s and golf r’s a ton over the last 3 years. You truly are only paying for the Audi badge with s3. Golf r drives almost identical and for significantly less. If you have any more question let me know. 👍
@@pleco101 Got the 35th anniversary edition last september with the DSG. So far have had no problems at all. No squeeks, nothing. Feels more powerful than 228 hp.
Thanks for focusing on the manuals, I’m sure their dual clutch is nice but nothing compares to the engagement of a good stick. I’m with you, this GLI is special and VW did an amazing good job with this package and I was considering an Elantra Sport in manual before seeing this video.
Bro love your vids was a SI owner and was wrestling with WRX or GLI 35 and the GLI won out it’s the perfect tri athlete of sport car for every man so much car for the money
I had a 2003 1.8T Jetta manual and loved that car. Even back then it was faster than what you would expect and so fun to drive. Now as an "Adult" I think I can finally talk myself into buying this since it's not a hatchback.
My 2023 GLI is very well-built the doors feel super solid slightly heavy but great build quality and I can't get over how actually smooth writing and quiet and how fast this car really is now keep in mind I am coming out of a Mark 8 GTI
We REALLY push the car hard during the times where it has trouble putting the power down. Most owners will probably never push their cars this hard but we do it for testing purposes. In day-to-day driving, we found that the car puts the power down very well up to about 80% full throttle.
Redline Reviews so does it have a lsd? My gti has no problem putting it down and i have a 2019. Thats interesting, but could also be the stock tires it comes with
Totally agree with Sofyan’s presentation & thoughts on this sedan.. He should ad the car to the Redline fleet...👍🏻 L👀K!! Even a “ Redline “ in the grill!!!!
I feel the side profile is the best view. The rear looks fine, the front is very disappointing. To add insult to injury, it looks like a 7/8 scale replica of a Dodge Charger from the front, especially with the DRL’s on. Sneak peeks of the MK 8 Golf seem to echo the same uninspiring straight across line between the hood and headlamp/ grill. Thank god VW wised-up and ditched the torsion beam rear suspension. Attention VW, you are seriously losing ground in the compact car interior quality that you held since the amazing MK 4 interiors. Wake up and take it back. Not a fan of perforated “leather” without ventilation, but heated & cooled memory (driver only, or both?) front seats are a real boon. Don’t get all that on the Golf R! The extended legroom in the rear was a good decision, to separate the roles of the Golf and Jetta, but not giving A/C vents to those now- comfy rear seat passengers was a mistake. Finally, I don’t have any respect still for electronic engine noise and never will, I don’t appreciate any assessment of fake engine noise timbre. I know why it’s there nowadays, it just sucks though. All this coming from a VW lover, that’s why I’m as critical as I am.
Awesome to see Jason Camissa again! But it seems like that fake noise is just nothing but noise pollution the entire drive. How can anyone put up with that throughout a long distance drive, I wonder..
I dont know if it’s just me but the normal a analog gauges look better than the digital ones 🤷♂️ not a fan of the digital display gauges. And although i am a big manual fan at least on the gti the dsg trans is the one to get
Abel S550 GT i think a big part of it is that a lot of the companies arent doing anything interesting or cool with them. Like youd think theyd be doing a bunch of unique cool shit like the 80s digital gauges but theyre afraid of doing anything other than what is essentially a flat boring replica of a regular analogue gauge
itslit19 yes i was not saying its not high quality at all. My point is it looks a bit plain, they could’ve done much more with it, to my personal taste, the analogue cluster looks better
itslit19 true, but my comparison was against the autobahn model digital gauge cluster and the 35th anniversary analogue cluster. But true Ford gauges in the 90’s and early 2000’s were shit lol
I just appreciate the way the infotainment screen is actually integrated into the dash. I can stand for vehicles to just stab a tablet into the top. Especially in more expensive vehicles. Looks so cheap to me.
B HM Yeah, it's definitely a pano tease, but it is slightly larger than the standard roofs that competitors use. I'm more concerned about the difference in wind noise with that slide over design (in both vented and open positions). I like to have the sunroof open at freeway speeds when the weather is nice (probably why I'm going prematurely deaf).
I would get this over the Accord and Civic SI. Great bargain, great tech, great price and great performance. VW really made it perfect without stepping into Audi’s heels.
kermit1 you forgot about the oil dilution issue. I don’t mind much about resale value, this isn’t a Kia. My Audi Q5 was a trouble free car for 7 years.
@@kermit1 new Gen 2.0tsi mqb cars are amazingly reliable. People are pushing double the stock power on a warranty and having no issues up into 100k miles +. You really think. Anew car won't depreciate? The money you save on this over a 2.0t accord would equate to you saving money over a top spec accord. And let's not mention tune only warrantied by vw this will smoke a type R, all for less and not styled like a kit car
I bought a 2017 GLI with a automatic transmission . In sport mode I swear that 0-60 has got to be under 6 sec .. I love that car . everything is premium when I want and total beast mode when I need it
That rear seat in this GLI offers a lot of practical leg room. This new GLI reminds me of the 'perfect' sided sedan, such as the former BMW 3-series before they got too big. I think this GLI in a rear wheel drive version would be so good!
You can have in the custom drive mode. Have everything turned to sport mode and then have the engine noise turned to eco or normal. Which then is sport mode without the engine sound coming through the speakers. Discover that during a test drive. Will be picking one up soon. Great car and the manual transmission is very good.
The fact those seats are just straight out of the Audi A3 and those are flat as a board. Sporty i wanna be stuck in the seat! The Elantra sport personally has the 4 door sport coupe down, less tech but but less price and good feel for the driver.

Hey Bruce. I’ve driven s3’s and golf r’s a ton over the last 3 years. You truly are only paying for the Audi badge with s3. Golf r drives almost identical and for significantly less. If you have any more question let me know. 👍
I live close to this road in Knoxville, TN. You should come back in the summer! It's a lot of fun.
Just picked up the 35th anniversary edition of this car today, its a beut
sounds great. beautiful car.
What's typical selling price after incentives etc?
around 28,500 but im leasing it for 280 a month, so not too bad.
@@Davido50 I got mine for 23k OTD with a 1500 trade.
Same scenario for me actually
I had a 2003 1.8T Jetta manual and loved that car. Even back then it was faster than what you would expect and so fun to drive. Now as an "Adult" I think I can finally talk myself into buying this since it's not a hatchback.
Absolutely gorgeous inside and out. I'm bitter about getting my 2019 Jetta SEL and not waiting for this😭
Great review per usual!
Looks dope
preslikan polo
This design is magnificent, i feel like i want to buy it with my imaginary money.
When is the Wolfsburg edition coming out.
Love the fact that your laughing while driving, true car enthusiast, bravo bro
This channel is probably one of the best car review channels on TH-cam
Straight pipes says hello
stillatin they are pretty cool

Sofyan, my dude...I'm just glad you are still alive after that test run with Jason. Wow.
What was VW thinking only putting the adaptive dampers on the 35th anniversary model??? Makes no sense why the Autobahn doesn’t get this as well!
My 2023 GLI is very well-built the doors feel super solid slightly heavy but great build quality and I can't get over how actually smooth writing and quiet and how fast this car really is now keep in mind I am coming out of a Mark 8 GTI
I love Jason Cammisa!
Are those front seats as wide as the Passat?
“Has trouble putting the power down” “Lots of wheel hop”... and then hits us with the “Does it need AWD... not really”🤔🤷🏻♂️🤨
Thats interesting, but could also be the stock tires it comes with
Not every car “should be” a manual. Im an enthusiast and throughly enjoy a great auto trans.
$37 torque arm mount from black forest industries....no more wheel hop.
The front wheels can only handle so much power.
I haven't see him this excited over a car in a long time.
Totally agree with Sofyan’s presentation & thoughts on this sedan.. He should ad the car to the Redline fleet...👍🏻 L👀K!! Even a “ Redline “ in the grill!!!!
Jason Cammisa!!! Awesome to see him again. Great episode!
You're a great car reviewer! I enjoy your videos. Great work!
please do a comparison between this and the 2019 atreon. and does it come in right hand drive?
This car journalist is the leader in auto reviews. Car wow and throttle House are great journalist...BUT REDLINE is the bench mark!
The GLI does have adaptive cruise control :O Other than that I loved the review! Great job!!
Only the Autobahn
I just appreciate the way the infotainment screen is actually integrated into the dash. I can stand for vehicles to just stab a tablet into the top. Especially in more expensive vehicles. Looks so cheap to me.
Very nice car, but no AWD is a bummer.
wvusmc right
Exactly
man i love your reviews, me and my family have been using them to find good starting points for finding new cars
The car sounds amazing!!!
You always do such a great job reviewing the entire vehicle. Love the new GLI
Make mine a bright red Autobahn with the stick. Liking that "half-ass" panoramic sunroof too.
buoyant69 that’s what pissed me off and kept me from pulling the trigger. The glass is big, but from the inside, it’s regular size. Pfft!
B HM
Yeah, it's definitely a pano tease, but it is slightly larger than the standard roofs that competitors use. I'm more concerned about the difference in wind noise with that slide over design (in both vented and open positions).
I like to have the sunroof open at freeway speeds when the weather is nice (probably why I'm going prematurely deaf).
buoyant69 it’s not meant to be a pano sunroof that’s just how VW makes there sunroofs
f181234 wrong. It’s definitely sold as a pano sunroof.
I have a white 35th anniversary model and love it. Don’t need the autobahn model.
I would get this over the Accord and Civic SI. Great bargain, great tech, great price and great performance. VW really made it perfect without stepping into Audi’s heels.
DoYouJ? You forgot the part about poor reliability and resale value
kermit1 you forgot about the oil dilution issue.
Seems like it doesn't rev hang..which is good compares to accord or Mazda 6
He used to be one of the guys from World’s Greatest Drag Race, right?
Another fantastic review and it's great to see Jason in this review. Glad he's back to auto reviews.
You should have your on show on MTV or something...you the man!!
I love how VW integrate the infotainment system into the dashboard making the dashboard look beautiful.
I don't understand why the 35th Anniversary Edition is a lower trim than the Autobahn. I want the 35th edition with the extras of the Autobahn.
Caleb Ross that would be to cool and volkswagen doesn‘t do cool stuff.
I bought a 2017 GLI with a automatic transmission . In sport mode I swear that 0-60 has got to be under 6 sec .. I love that car . everything is premium when I want and total beast mode when I need it
This is a Gorgeous car!!!
Good job VW 👍
Redline is the best car review channel 😀
Autobahn GLI curb weight: 3217 lb. (from vw website, not specified about transmission)
Autobahn GTI curb weight: 3031 lb. (ditto)
Difference 186 lb.
What I learned from this video: I should get a GTI
Just picked up a GTI Rabbit last month and I gotta say. I love the damn thing. My first GTI, first VW as well. Really happy with it so far.
@@ixiknivesixi1058 cornflower blue?
@@killerkhalsa27 they nailed it with that blue. It suits the GTI so well and it even pairs well with the red accents.
That rear seat in this GLI offers a lot of practical leg room.
This new GLI reminds me of the 'perfect' sided sedan, such as the former BMW 3-series before they got too big.
I think this GLI in a rear wheel drive version would be so good!
@@exothermal.sprocket nah man. Small cars needs to be fwd for north america.
You can have in the custom drive mode. Have everything turned to sport mode and then have the engine noise turned to eco or normal. Which then is sport mode without the engine sound coming through the speakers. Discover that during a test drive. Will be picking one up soon. Great car and the manual transmission is very good.
The Jetta used to be the nicer/costlier car back in the day, eg mk2.
The fact those seats are just straight out of the Audi A3 and those are flat as a board. Sporty i wanna be stuck in the seat! The Elantra sport personally has the 4 door sport coupe down, less tech but but less price and good feel for the driver.
VW GTI and GLI are in a different league. The Elantra is not remotely competitive with either,
