I own a 35TH Anniversary GLI and I also owned a 2015 GTI and I totally agree with everything said here. While I love the GLI, the GTI and it’s playful nature is something i miss dearly. Although I miss the GTI, the GLI is the better daily driver for the money. I can fit 4-5 people comfortably without moving my seat forward. I can also fit all my stuff in the trunk with some space left over, which were major issues for me as I got older. If you want the best “do-it-all” car, get a GLI. If you want a seriously fun daily driver and do not need any passenger/cargo room, GTI all day long. Great review!!!
I had a ‘15 GTI too and found the ride a bit too firm for daily driving on the poor road surfaces here in the Northeast. Also found the wheel hop and screech on fast pull aways, quite annoying. How does the GLI compare?
Michael Silbert the GLI is more comfortable for sure. Wheel hop is always going to happen in a FWD vehicle you’re gonna want to run sticky tires to eliminate that. The stock sport tires on the GLI are decent. definitely better than the GTIs all season tires.
I was able to recently find a '15 GTI with 28k miles on it and it is a bit rough around the edges as a daily driver car but I absolutely love it so far.
I’ve had the new GLI for the past 6 months and I have to say, with a cat-back exhaust and a CAI, it’s a hell of a lot of fun. Not only that, but the trunk and the back seat space makes it super easy to carry around friends and stuff. Absolutely worth the money.
That’s a nearly loaded GTI against a low spec GLI. Of course there will be a price difference. On VW’s website a base GTI and a base GLI start within $1500 of each other. The GTI is slightly more expensive.

The only other car I was considering was the Veloster N but no was was giving discounts when I was shopping a few months back. Great review as always guys!
A lot depends on what you are wanting. It is inevitable that people would compare the cars but they really are more complementary than in competition. Most folks looking for a hot hatch wouldn't be interested in the GLI because, well, it's a sedan. Likewise someone looking for a sedan (like I was) should really look at the GLI. Really, if you think about it, for the cost of a 35th Anniversary Edition (which I paid 25K for out the door-that TTL included) I could have maybe gotten a Fusion SE, a mid range Malibu or a Accord Sport. All of those cars are fine but compared to a GLI they are not nearly the performance car that the GLI is. The GTI is the bar to be set for hot hatches and will be for the near future, but the GLI isn't a hot hatch.
My '17 GTI S was in the shop for a annoying issue (that btw VW finally announced a recall for) and in the meantime I was using a normal '18 Jetta S. To put it simply: The Jetta is a comfortable plush old man car (a mini Lincoln Town car) where as the GTI is an upscale nimble hot hatch.
Your "Apples to Apples" price comparison is a bit flawed, as you are comparing the price of the cars at its highest trim (Autobahn editions). But the base price of both cars is less than $2,000 apart.
VW's can be very reliable. My MK6 GTI went 113,000 miles without any major problems and never saw a check engine light. At said miles the PCV system failed along with the intake manifold and rear main seal causing a difficult to diagnose vacuum leak. Pretty big repair bill but it's been 100% reliable ever since. With an APR ECU and DSG tune it goes like stink. Not too bad for a 10 year old car.

I honestly think the Jetta GLI has a really nice look to it, inside and out. It has good seats and practicality. Nathan took off earlier on the GTI, because Roman always started half a second later. If Roman started off quicker, he would be ahead. They should be on par performance wise. The GLI does 5.6-5.8 seconds 0-60. That is really fast for 228hp!
Canadian spec 35th edition gets you digital dash, 8 inch glass display, heated and cooled vented front leather seats, wireless charging, rear heated seats, dcc, and a cd player in the glove box. Don't know why they screwed the states over with the crappy version, same with the rabbit, ours gets the 8 inch display in that to with the cd player in the glovebox as well. And base vs base in Canada the gli costs more by a little.
That giant teddy bear trunk space test was great! Lol I have a 2019 Jetta and love the huge trunk, I just don't see how the GLI supposedly has more space and this proves it, cool vid btw
TFL I have a question. Did your 2019 GTI stall out on you at all when coming to a stop? My 2019 manual GTI did and the dealership bought it back. It’s a huge problem with that specific year right now. It’s all over the forums
Ralph Roman incorrect. Where did you acquire your false math? There are literally hundreds of complains to the NHTSA about this issue on the manual transmission version. MOST people do not report errors to the NHSTA. VW now has a stop sale in place and the NHTSA has an open investigation. 1% my ass, but nice try.
My 15' fiesta manual had this issue and more pronounced with a/c on, I had to make sure the clutch was in well before coming to a stop, or it would stall. Did your GTI do it even if the clutch was in well before coming to a stop?
@@sporopeza so you are claiming that a FWD car is better than an AWD car that has the same engine? It sounds like the people who back this assumption just couldnt fork over enough cash for the R at that point in their life, and are starting regret their choices.
My GLI has same interior as that GTI, just NICER seats cause they’re full leather. You guys kinda mislead people here, cause you say those things about display, seats/power, sunroof, etc... when they’re all OPTIONS! .... smh 🤦♂️
@@MeltingRubberZ28 Mine would have been under 23k but it had the homelink mirror option checked and it was the only Tornado Red GLI available within a Tri-State area. Couldn't find another non-black/white manual 35th.
I got mine in black. I really enjoy it. The acceleration the car has on the highway is pretty surprising. I think it's the gearing that makes it that way.
In Canada we paid around $30,000 for both our base 3 door 2016 GTI manual and our loaded 2019 "35 Edition" Finish is better in the GTI but good value in the GLI. Gripes are the rev hang in the 2019, it is HORRIBLE!, no height adjustment in the passenger seat and a skinny, weak stick holding up the hood as opposed to the hydraulic strut in the GTI, apart from that it is a fast, competent highway machine.
I own an 18 GTI, i paid 24k for mine in S trim.. it's not worth 37k dollars in any trim..Also the manual is amazing in this car.. yes you can get the dual clutch but the manual is just so good you would be doing a disservice not getting the stick.
@@bluecent The DSG is brilliant at WOT upshifts. At everything else, it's a jerky automatic that mis-times shifts and waits too long to downshift. Unless in sport mode and then it's overly active at jerky downshifts. I'd much rather have the manual unless buying it to drag race.
My Passat b6 has sort of the same power plant. 2.0T mated to 6-speed manual, love that car except in stop and go traffic which by the way it's the norm in my neck of the woods, acceleration lag at take-off and the fact the car wants to go a bit too fast doesn't make it a pleasant experience in heavy traffic.
The perfect choice would be VW bringing back the Jetta Wagon with desirable 2.0T engine and a manual tranny option... The new Golf Sport/Alltrack Wagens are neutered disappointment. I've owned both a Jetta and GTI of the same generation... The Jetta was more practical for passenger hauling and grocery runs, but the GTI definitely had the cool/fun factor. After owning both my ideal choice would have been a Jetta Wagon, because it's even more practical than both but still has a really unique cool factor about it.
I just checked the VW site, these cars are within $2000 of each other, could be they are priced different at the dealership. The price difference does not take away from the review.
When doing comparisons on speed, never use manuals because it's not accurate. Either use the automatics or go by the brochure and be done with it. I was expecting to actually find out which one was faster. The GTI is supposedly faster by like a mere fraction of a second if we're going to use this video as a reference.
They are comparing a 35th Anniversary GLI with an Authobahn spec GTI. Specs and pricewise the 35th GLI compares better with the Rabbit GTI. Even when comparing Autobahn GLI/GTI the GTI still has more equipment, like the DCC adaptive chassis control, it's not available on the GLI. Edit: DCC is on the 35th AE GLI but not available on the GLI Autobahn. The GTI SE has DCC available as an option, and is closer in price to the 35th AE (at least in the U.S.)
The Golf line doesn’t really have an age cap. Many find it more practical and everyday than a Wrx, focus, or civic if you consider their bold sporty design. Those cars cater to a younger audience, the golf is subtle and has a kick to it.
I bought a mk 2 GLI instead of the GTI, brand new, back in '85. It cost $2k MORE than the GTI back then..... $11,575 vs $9995 (I got a little discount)
A hatch is more practical though. You can put larger things in the boot because the opening is wider. It then has more utility space. Also, the Jetta you can see has some cheap finishings and missing attention to detail like the GTI. The GTI seems more built the European way and the Jetta seems built the American way.
VW has repeatedly been challenged in selling their Euro spec vehicles in North America. Americans prefer larger, cheaper versions of VW vehicles. Now with the decision to drop the base Golf in North America it's obvious they're pinning a lot of their hopes on the new generation line-up, a larger version that isn't even sold in Europe. The GLI appears to be following the tradition of replacing the Euro spec Passat with a US version, the Touareg replaced by the Atlas, and the larger Tiguan replacing the last version of the vehicle (still sold internationally). In the case of the GLI, it's the same pattern, a larger version of the GTI priced at a discount. Thankfully, at least so far, the GTI's (and the Golf R's) iconic status means it will continue to be sold in the US though the MK8 version isn't likely to show up in the US before 2021. As far as pricing is concerned, reviewers have no choice except to cite MSRP's of vehicles. But real world prices arrived at via price negotiation with a dealer may reveal a different picture. For example, I purchased a fully loaded DSG Autobahn GTI in the Seattle area last year for $32,043 plus TTL, a price about $6000 less than MSRP. My deal was a good one. Not everyone everywhere will experience that discount. But with GLI's currently selling in my area at near MSRP or more, the price difference is nowhere near $9K. Closer to $3K to $5K. Is the difference worth it? Of course there's an "icon" premium associated with the GTI. But there are some other more tangible differences. For me, the rear seat AC vents in the GTI are a big deal. Or at least they are to my big dog whose second home is the back seat of my GTI. And while the interior of the GLI is good, the GTI in Autobahn trim is better. There's more room in the back seat of the GLI but the GTI counters with more overall cargo space behind the front row in a large rectangular configuration. That's especially impressive considering the GLI is a foot longer than the GTI. The digital cockpit of the GLI offers appealing eye candy compared to the GTI but no real advantage in terms of functionality. (Worth noting, by the way, that the GTI gets the digital cockpit in Europe. North Americans will have to wait for the MK8.) Obviously, my choice is the GTI. Have to say, though, that I can understand those who prefer the GLI . And as long as VW continues to send GTI's and Golf R's to the US, I'll be happy to see GLI's on the road.
Once again, apples and oranges. Should’ve compared with the Autobahn. And, like you pointed out, Roman, it is STILL several thousand cheaper. And it has a useable back seat. Nathan is INSANE if he says he would get the GTI!
They're actually the same price i was just at the VW dealership two weeks ago and they were both priced exactly the same but actually the jetta GLI Autobahn was a little more expensive than the GTI.....and the GTI and GLI achieve the same 0 to 60 time and quarter mile so im not sure how you ended up losing to the GTI ...i guess driver makes a difference
Yeah my dog is just not going to be happy about being stuffed in the trunk (Lab mix), and once I went to the Golf, might as well get the R for the AWD and zoot. Which I did. Dog doesn't like the back quite as much as the A4 Avant we came from but it's fine, and my rack accessories came over for bikes and Thule. A few months in I'm still not always in love with the engagement of 1st and 2nd, but I'm a sucker for a manual so no DSG here.
@@marshall2754 I was looking it up recently since I am in the market for something like a gli and it stated in the owners manual that 91 is recommended fuel
Nathan McLaughlin no you don’t have to put premium fuel but you loose power. Any way if that a problem for you then this are not the car you should get just get a regular Jetta of golf if fuel economy is your priority
What tires does one want on these front-drive cars, if only one set? Are high-performance all-season tires worse in snow and rain than grand touring all-season? Concerned about safety! After that, performance. Not going to change tires twice a year.
I own both these cars except we have a Jetta SEL and besides the obvious space in the back, one thing you didn’t talk about is that you can get more Tech on Jetta vs GTI. I prefer the performance ie my GTI and my wife like the Tech ie her Jetta. GTI fit and finish is much better then the Jetta as you guys stated
One of the more meaningful reviews I've seen in quite some time. This, coming from a guy who's owned both of these. It's clear that the Jetta was built to a price point. The GTI is wayyyy more fun also. An overlooked point is that with the GTI, you can stuff 53 cu. ft. of stuff in it. Heck, a small refrigerator fits. Try that going into a 3 box sedan. My GTI sits next to a 911. Which is more fun? On regular roads and non-insane speeds, the V dub for sure. I'm seeing fuel mileage of well over 40 mpg regularly, and have seen 45 on the highway (they sell non-Ethanol gas here). The choice mainly comes down to your budget, and how important is the quality of the interior and features you get, which are absent on the Jetta.
It's not quite fair to say it's $9k more expensive if you compare a top trim model to a base model. For instance, the Mazda3 has a $10k price different between the base sedan and the top trim hatchback.
I love the GTI a tad more but for a $7,000 (similarly equipped) difference, I'll take the GLI (in black obviously) and go buy a motorcycle too. Or just a used GTI from the last generation.
I had a 2007 VW Passat 2.0 turbo 6 speed manual and loved it. HATED THE ELECTRIC PARKING BRAKE! It was never fun at a stop light and killing the engine then BAM BRAKES ON! 😡
The reason theres a 9k price difference is cause your comparing a basemodel/35th gli too the top of the line gti. Okay maybe its not the autobahn but its either that or the top one. If the gli was an autobahn itd be about 31-34k which is a 2-5k dufference which makes perfect sense as the gti uses slightly higher quality materials like more softtouch around the interior. I think the gti is slightly over priced because vw knows people will pay. When lots of people want something demand goes up. The gli is not as popular and they just want too get the sales so theres no manufacturer markup. Also gtis have more parts made outaide of mexico making transport more expensive
People getting upset cos the base models are around $2k difference. But nobody wants a premium priced care but just base items. But for the sake of the video shown. Accept its 9k different.
Even though the bear fits nicely in that gli trunck, you cannot shove a 50cc honda dirt bike standing up like you can in a gti. I know from experience. You wouldn't believe what I've shoved in my hatch backs (mainly a golf tdi).

Nope
The Fast Lane Car glad to hear. Thanks
Far from a huge problem about 1% of a problem...
Bought a base GTI, brand new, 6mt for $23k otd. Plaid seats are cooler anyway. Tuned making 300 lb/ft torque for $500 more. I win.
Steve Goldberg did the same thing. No need for the leather or sunroof.
I got my 35th 6MT for the exact same price. DCC, Golf R brakes
Not a fair comparison at all. To be fair...use a GTI "S" against that GLI version. Then both would be base models.
35th isn't the base. The S is the base
Just FYI, the GTI trunk floor has too positions. The boot floor drops another 3 or 4 inches. That's probably where the 22 CU FT comes in.

You guys kinda mislead people here, cause you say those things about display, seats/power, sunroof, etc... when they’re all OPTIONS! .... smh 🤦♂️
Not only is the Gli base price less but the discounts are alot better. I picked up my US spec Gli 35th for just a hair over 23k
Darrin Hillier, that’s pretty amazing, especially since the 35th has the fully adjustable suspension.
I got mine OTD for 23k flat
ShartingFish the MK7 DSG is brilliant.
@@bluecent It's not as fun as the manual.
Matthew Emrick Right, and drag racing a GTI is silly because it’s not made for drag racing.
Dsg is better manual clutch is so weak
My Passat b6 has sort of the same power plant. 2.0T mated to 6-speed manual, love that car except in stop and go traffic which by the way it's the norm in my neck of the woods, acceleration lag at take-off and the fact the car wants to go a bit too fast doesn't make it a pleasant experience in heavy traffic.
Love my Golf R
The perfect choice would be VW bringing back the Jetta Wagon with desirable 2.0T engine and a manual tranny option... The new Golf Sport/Alltrack Wagens are neutered disappointment.
I've owned both a Jetta and GTI of the same generation... The Jetta was more practical for passenger hauling and grocery runs, but the GTI definitely had the cool/fun factor. After owning both my ideal choice would have been a Jetta Wagon, because it's even more practical than both but still has a really unique cool factor about it.
Hey, Nathan, I am drooling your smokey real 200 % power!
I just checked the VW site, these cars are within $2000 of each other, could be they are priced different at the dealership. The price difference does not take away from the review.
Time for VW to put the V6 turbo (354HP) into the Golfs and Jettas 😎
APR stage 2 fixes the EA888.
I wish you guys could compare the Canadian Spec. GLI. That’s the one with real value. DCC in an autobahn package.
Here in Canada, with 0% financing incentive. Golf GTI is $288/month and Jetta GLi is $296/month. Base trim and 5 year financing term.
per bi-weekly, not monthly
When doing comparisons on speed, never use manuals because it's not accurate. Either use the automatics or go by the brochure and be done with it. I was expecting to actually find out which one was faster. The GTI is supposedly faster by like a mere fraction of a second if we're going to use this video as a reference.
Where are you getting these prices I'm see maybe max a 6000 difference up north
3:22 now I have to give those names meaning.
Roman, I like the “finesse”
North Americans will have to wait for the MK8.)
Obviously, my choice is the GTI.
Glad to see Nathan and Roman together again! Good video! I think you guys did the GLI35 for the DCC instead of the Autobahn.
Why are you lying
If you have a dog or walk/work with dogs (like I do), the GTI is almost certainly better. If you don't, I personally would go with the GLI.
Hi. They should have tried them more in a circuit. They lack that. I always follow them from Argentina!
Who has the less weight advantage: Nathan or Roman? Lol 😂

After selling VAG cars, the GLI is an outlier. I had one customer who waited more than 18 months to get one with a manual transmission.
These cars are sweet and good deals but the fact you have to put premium fuel in them makes them not worth it to me
You don't have to put premium fuel you can put regular gas lol more hp then put premium.

Good review,starring Nathan and Geoff!
I love the GTI a tad more but for a $7,000 (similarly equipped) difference, I'll take the GLI (in black obviously) and go buy a motorcycle too.
Or just a used GTI from the last generation.
iCarly?
AJ Aurgemma what
I love that shot at 3:08
Oddly you still can’t get adaptive cruise control in the fully optioned 2020 GLI autobahn 🧐😣
I had a 2007 VW Passat 2.0 turbo 6 speed manual and loved it. HATED THE ELECTRIC PARKING BRAKE! It was never fun at a stop light and killing the engine then BAM BRAKES ON! 😡
Should have done both Autobahn trims. The GLI only wins because of the virtual cockpit. Price is crazy for the GTI though.
Also gtis have more parts made outaide of mexico making transport more expensive
i love both
I am really a fan of the GLI but it does not currently offer adaptive cruise control.
Why is the American GTI so weak? The European version already reached 290 hp with the 2019 model year....
If they did they're going jack up the price or cut costs somewhere.
we care about the earth blah blah emissions blah
Is that the regular model or the TCR versions? We don't get the TCR over here, but engine came over in the Golf R,
As an R owner I got a pretty big chuckle out of the ending there
Why does he sit so far back in the driver seat??? I'm 6'2 and own a GTI and I can fit perfectly behind my seat position... Weird.
Sounds like you are Short Legg'ed and Long Waisted....
Isn't the price difference primarily due to the manufacturing costs in Germany for the GTI and Mexico for the GLI?
Both made in Mexico for US market.
A good ol nathan and roman mash up 😁
Lmaooo @ the Bear's name. Blew my mind.
I’m pretty sure the vw Jetta GLI has different gearing for cursing at high speed where the GTI is more track focus
Wish you compared the auto versions
Oh how we just love VW now...
We? You. Just you. Oh....and not even you....that leaves no one.
People getting upset cos the base models are around $2k difference. But nobody wants a premium priced care but just base items.
But for the sake of the video shown. Accept its 9k different.
Did you even answer your own question? The drag race at around seven minutes in didn’t answer the question. So is the golf quicker or not?
The GTI was quicker than the GLI, since they were both manuals maybe they should have switched drivers for the 2nd race.
Car and driver ran faster with a 35th GLI than the Golf R...FYI
Even though the bear fits nicely in that gli trunck, you cannot shove a 50cc honda dirt bike standing up like you can in a gti. I know from experience. You wouldn't believe what I've shoved in my hatch backs (mainly a golf tdi).
Speaking as a Geoff, neither trunk is really all that comfortable.
