  • Mobile Suit Victory Gundam is a full length TV anime series originally released by Sunrise in 1993. Victory would continue the Universal Century timeline of the Gundam franchise, and is still known as the latest animated piece of media in that setting. Marred with production issues and rumored to be effected by its creators own mental health, Victory Gundam is known to fans as a show that may be best avoided. Let's take a look back and see why Mobile Suit Victory Gundam is remembered as a black sheep of the series.

All I feel about Victory at this point is how remarkable of a 180 Tomino took going from it to Turn A by the end of the decade. That said, I think that late UC period had a lot of potential if they wanted to go with more of a Warring States era but with space colonial power blocs concept rather than another Fascist empire threatening a very poorly governed Earth.

@@hawkticus_history_corner Its a mix of corruption and incompetance. Time and time again the federation has been shown to be severely corrupt in the higher ranks. Their incompetance comes in when they continue to promote those from the middle ranks to higher ranks despite the soldier being promoted constantly failing and getting their comrades killed.
Lastly the thing that makes no sense in canon is how they take certain gundam units and seal them away in a vault somewhere. Many of the MS they do this too are often some of the most powerful mechs the federation has. Now I know the reason for this is based in reality as Sunrise way of sunsetting various mechs so that they're not used again. The list of gundams this has been done to include RX-78-1(the RX-78 prototype), RX-78 NT1 "Alex", GP03 "Stamen", etc.

When I heard Crossbone continued the story of F91, I was expecting something more or less in line with F91's mature tone. But Crossbone is very wacky. There's a tonal whiplash into camp, you have technologies that don't quite fit with the rest of UC lore like Dogatie's bio-brains, and things get even sillier with Steel Seven. Not that that's bad, just like ZZ isn't bad, it's just a similar shift. And aside from Zabine, it's not a conclusion to the open threads of F91, we don't know how that Cosmo Babylonia conflict itself resolved.

It's been a bit since I watched Victory, so a lot of the specific plot points are pretty faded in my memory.
One moment that still sticks with me is pretty early on in the show, when Uso defeats a squad of 3-4 guys. The squad leader realizes not only are there kids as young as 13 fighting in this war, but said 13-year-old beat him. He urges Uso to get out of the war as soon as he can, and kills himself with a grenade.

For context, VG was written when Tomino was under severe depression, which was partially the result of corporate decision interfering his writing (such as the arrangements of the first 4 episodes and the inclusion of some warships with tyres). On the story itself, it's true that the Shakti naïveness has been far overdone, but that aside, it's just great to see this becomes the Gundam anime with most death (and one of the most brutal too, in Uso's mother), and the final scene where Reinforce Jr. just ram into the enemy is for me, the best scene of all Gundam. While Katejina is no doubt the most evil woman of all time, Tomino did explain that letting her live is in fact a more severe punishment than dying, and Shakti's forgiveness in the end was quite fitting to close the UC timeline in heavy despair but with a small ray of hope of forgiveness and new lives from Karl and Marbet. While 00, ZG and Unicorn were the other shows that stands on equal podium as VG, I think the VG ending was by a small margin the best of these 4.

I love the mood. It's an oddly sleepy, cozy apocalypse. The only way to make sense of the events is that it's one of those periods of history where people just seem to be going mad, carrying out atrocities despite there not being an economic or geopolitical gain to be had, even for a sociopathic opportunist. The guillotines, the Motorad city-flattenings, Katejina's swimsuit squadron. Belligerent animal spirits that Side 2 just needed to get out of their system, even at the expense of their own lives. And the soundtrack!

I honestly felt bad for the Shrike Team. But the moment I saw them I knew they'd be killed off. They practically exist with a big red target on their backs. Which is a shame because they could have been something special but their deaths felt like an after thought as opposed to having any thematic weight behind them. I feel the story was going "Feel bad for these nice woman who have died" but instead came out as "Good god why are you killing them off in the stupidest ways possible?"
Victory Gundam is a series that you *can* get through, but you _have_ to be ready for the slog to do so. Do not go in Victory thinking it's going to tell a compelling story. Instead, go into it expecting to see interesting ideas and characters... that *literally* get butchered.

You're more on the money than you realize. Victory Gundam was one of the first productions made after Bandai acquired Sunrise Studios which meant the Gunpla makers had even MORE say so in the creative side of the Anime. To which frustrated the already troubled Tomino when Bandai was insisting on things that turned his narrative choices upside down. So you have a lot of bits being dictated by Bandai while Tomino is still trying to get his narrative to play out. It's any wonder Victory Gundam is such a strange beautiful wreck of a narrative. I think it's both a very good show and also a bad one. Not horrible but it's flawed because of the production troubles coupled with Tomino's depression that amped his 'Kill em' All!' antics up to the 11's. I think it's why I tend to give the show some leeway, but never ignore its faults either. Plus I love Uso as a protagonist, you really do want to see this sweet boy and his friends survive, so at least investment in your main character was well-done. Uso is a kid protagonist done well, and it's not surprising despite Victory's reputation why our boy and the Victory 2 Gundam often end up in Super Robot Wars over some of the other famed pilots and Gundams.

@@Retcon404 They could have, but Uso had innate skill and talent as a pilot. He was well on his way to being an Ace pilot, and with League Militare losing people as quickly as they did, the idea of losing one of their best pilots despite his age is probably why some of the upper brass never prioritized getting him out of the cockpit. Plus I'm sure some folks figured if they tried to force Uso, he may just steal the Victory and go on his own like so many other G-pilots XD. Best to keep him where they can watch and support him.

one of my biggest gripes with Victory is the gundam itself. With how much they early parts rely on the drama of fights being Uso needing to put the thing together and having to separate, it made the suit itself feel less special when its whole gimmick is being done by most if not all of the enemy suits already. With its parts constantly being replaced, it felt like the only special part of it was the core fighter itself and the head, and even than they show it doesn't matter when they change out a hexa head for the one with the V fin. I love its design, but that part of it made me really didn't feel like it was the main suit of a series.

However, the show itself? Yeah, I think there's good reason why Bandai Namco Visual/Sunrise decided to shelve the Universal Century for a while and focus on three new standalone shows (Mobile Fighter G, New Mobile Report Wing, After War X) with all the UC getting being 08th MS Team. Of course, come 2007 and 2010, they would finally give the Universal Century its welcome return with the Light Novel/Theatrical OVA Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, but the number Victory did is quite damaging.

I honestly ate this show up. Once they took off into space and Uso more or less developed into a soldier, I couldn't help but enjoy the tragedy of it all. While I'm long from saying which my favorite series is: I'm pretty content with Victory's controversial outing. I can see why Tomino hated it. It's cluttered with hopes and dreams followed by immediate death and lost loves. At the start of an episode there will be at least one or two people declaring their love via "at the end of the war will you bear my child" and then at the end of the episode they are all dead. Every single relationship or pining had been torn apart and killed. Uso and Shakti are left with Karl, but I didn't really get a romantic vibe from them, especially when for whatever reason Katejina became a complete lunatic and declared that two boys fight over her. Every time she showed up in the back half of the show I kept wondering if I missed some detail that led to her shift in loyalty.

You make fair points. This show has plenty of flaws. It also has the single nicest Gundam pilot in the whole series. Uso is ridiculously inventive and the highest scoring ace in all of Gundam. A kid who trained on mobile suit simulators since he was little. We get to watch him go from being a grunt to being a commander/commander with whole mobile suit companies under him. Plus the music is fantastic.

I watched Victory and... it's not all bad. I like the Victory and V2 designs. The bug design is a try to distinguish the late UC from the earlier parts. So people don't have to look too much into the history of UC. The story is not good but not too bad. It's a story of a weakening general government (EF) losing to smaller autocracies. It's kinda like a story of the ancient China. I like Uso, he's a strong kid. Even younger than Amuro when he first made his first kill. But his world is different. War was part of his childhood so he got used to death and killing. Overall not the best of UC timeline but I don't feel like wasting time watching it at all.

Weird in srw30 while Zeta characters used their design trilogy movie since srw Z series... Kamille mentions he was in vegetable state like anime and we're travel to Jupiter where's Judai and others are after ZZ finale, but nobody mentions them or appear despited storywise ZZ actually happen.
srw30 had many problems with many pointless series getting in them, CCA only had Amuro (also Bright) and survive all events for REASON. Zeta cast only had Kamille, Fa and Quatrro are in the way more CCA characters in the way. Whole story only characters matter the all are Amuro and Char for storywise while Kamille get put behind everyone because he's arc already complete first chapters.
And not give started with Getter Robo... Oh boy, getter robo is ultimate pointless pick the all

    • @Maioly
      @Maioly ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@theboihilbirt1277 ZZ did not happen in SRW30 continuity
none of its plot events happened and none of its characters exist; It went straight from Z to char's counterattack, with other series filling the gap.
Its in part due to the voice actor for Judau having some health issues, and I think there might be some other issues too, since ZZ gets the shaft in SRW a lot.
And Astonaige and Chan also survived CC in 30's continuity; So did some of Char's supporters who originally died.
Kamille does have his plot relevance, but primarily as a supporting character to Jona and Daba.
I do agree they could have handled the getter stuff better tho.
But the only pointless pick of the series cast is Knight & Magic; That entire series adds nothing to the plot or cast other than ernie fanboy-ing over other mechs, but even that is downplayed enough that I legitimately forget they are part of the cast.

I actually like and respect both Gundam zeta and Gundam victory but both also had it own flaw. Gundam zeta had great characters that bring old character for specific duty and good storytelling about horror of war but watch until later end fell sad and sympathy . Gundam victory other hand actually good eve tho had flaw by it pacing story and foreshadowing characters in later half but it totally show the Horror event by war which what the creator actually do about Gundam in general views. If someone like the first Gundam then watch Gundam zeta but beware cuz it WILL make your fell emotional a lot when watch it for long time. If someone want totally new but in same UC timeline then watch Gundam victory cuz despite it flaw it also a good show as rough as a diamond.

I can see why Tomino disowns it but I don’t think it’s a total failure either. I like how it stuck to its dark tone althroughout and like Uso’s journey and how he prevailed against all odds in the end. Shakti is one of my Top 5 least favorite characters in the franchise and definitely the worst Foster Mother of all time. I’d argue her getting captured at one point is the reason Uso’s Mom gets killed. Overall, it’s fine, not as solid as other entries but far from the worst Gundam story ever told (Personally that goes to Reconguista in G for me and cant wait to hear what you think of that one). Well done on the Retrospective dude.
