As for selling the stolen art...In a situation like this, I would imagine that the art has already been "sold" before the heist. The buyer places an order with the thieves who then fill the order by robbing the museum. This could also explain why certain more valuable pieces were left behind. They weren't on the list of items wanted by the buyer.

To answer the question about what happens to all these priceless stolen paintings (since obv they can't be just sold on) - apparently many of them trickle down and end up in the hands of Italian mafia bosses. The minute they mentioned that the security was about to get updated when the heist happened I figured it was an inside job. Just feels a little too convienient.
What if… another guard was in on it? Like they clearly had different guards staffed (morning shift, afternoon, night) and maybe they thought Abbath (is that how you spell his surname?) would be intoxicated as usual, and thought his shift would be easiest to pass through.
I think it was 2 workers who may have wanted to let abathe in on it, being like "hey you want a slice of this? Make it a little easier for us and we'll give you a share" kind of deal. Respect either way lmao
This is one of my favorite museums in the world. Part of what makes it so interesting is that Isabella stipulated in her will that everything be laid out exactly as she designed it because she wanted people to engage with her art as she did and not feel like it was a sterile museum environment. The empty frames from the paintings are just on the walls empty. It's really sad. Also if your name is Isabella you get free admission to the museum for life.
I have a suggestion for y'all.... How bout putting polls on videos so ppl can vote like who they think was the murderer...The poll would consist of all the suspects in the video and u could reveal the results at the end of the post mortem Hope y'all like this idea
Boston Book Bitty there are stipulations on the museum. Elizabeth Gardner had made it to where after she died, no new peices could be added and nothing can be removed. That's why the empty frames are still displayed.
That ain’t happening. Bet, all of these paintings are on the walls of some unscrupulous collectors around the world. They’re probably on display somewhere only their closest friends/co-conspirators can view them and barring a mistake or vendetta by one of those people, they’ll never be found.
This has probably been said a millions times before on the old comments. But if I casted a movie - jack black is the obvious choice to play that security guard.
People always expect so much out of witnesses. Like, if I were to describe my own mother, I would probably only be able to help you out with her hair and eyes, cause how does one even describe a face well? If you are just glancing at someone, you aren’t going to notice their especially narrow nose or their eyebrow shape.
Especially in crisis situations. People tend not to remember details, or they're not good at descriptions. I couldn't say whether someone on the street is 5'5" or 6", how much they weigh or how old they are..Interrogation and memory recovery techniques weren't as developed in the 1990s.
What's sad about this is that Mrs. Gardner had intended the museum to be a place where everyone could enjoy all of this beautiful art, not just other rich people, and now that Rembrandt is probably hanging in some Russian oligarch's bathroom or something.
Yeah, as much as the crime is much less sad than others on this channel and I don't feel a ton of sympathy for the wealthy having a tiny sliver of their net worth being stolen from them, this does make me sad because this was not some tax haven gallery and the paintings stolen now cannot be seen by the public or remain an integral part of visual art history.
It’s all very tragic. Wonder how she would react if she was alive. Most stolen art resurfaces decades after, and with any luck we will not have the wait that long
“Did he have a moustache” “No” “Maybe look into that, do a little more research” “Actually let me write that down, get me that pen, wait I don’t care” These two kill me 😂
The director of security Anthony Amore actually did a talk at my school and he said Isabella Stewart Gardner never wanted the setup in the museum to change so they still have the empty spaces on the walls where the paintings should be and will hopefully one day be returned. He also wrote a book on this called Stealing Rembrandts for anyone who is interested.
Sorry for the late reply. I'm happy to report Rick actually did make it to the Grateful Dead show in Hartford! He was planning to see them the next day as well but when he found out the next morning that so much had been stolen he headed back to Boston. He realized it would make him seem even more suspicious if he was skipping town so soon after the robbery.
Some inside info: not only did they steal precious Rembrandts, among them was his *ONLY SEASCAPE*, which is why it was so valuable. Also, Isabella Stuart Gardner was a fascinating woman who was very particular about the placement of the paintings, which are essentially placed in her mansion, so the museum is super unique. She left a stipulation that if they moved ANYTHING from where she put it originally, all the art must be donated to Harvard. That means that even when you visit today, the empty frames from the stolen pictures are still hanging on the walls where the paintings were cut out of them.
See but I hate that Isabel is described as just some rich woman. She spent her life collecting hundreds of pieces of art and instead of keeping it to herself she made her house a museum so others could enjoy it. After she died she ensured that it stayed that way by putting in her will that none of the pieces could be moved from where she had hung them. You can still see the empty frames from where the thieves cut the paintings out to this day because they legally can’t be moved. I’ve been to the museum multiple times and it’s gorgeous and a shame that this happened.
the fact that you can see the empty frames where they cut it out is more interesting to me than some classical art shit i’m going there to see that stfu
So a security expert comes in and sees their whole setup, and knows when they're going to be updating it, and then they get robbed RIGHT before they update it... hmmmmmm
Valerie Macias I read that the Philly Mob may have been involved. This would explain support your theory as I'm sure they have connections in the security industry.

Amelia Hagberg there are some cool videos with noises I can’t explain. A start is I think Cj faison in Eleanor woods I think. It’s supposedly haunted due to witches/satanist and stealing a mother’s baby and running in and she chased them and neither came out. The guy is kinda wimpy and runs out every time but with the symbols and noises That sound like talking through the wind next to them and one video with him and his limo driver you hear distinct running right up on top of them and it gave me chills to recall it. And when they turn with camera yelling nothings there behind them where it should be from the sound of footsteps. Crazy stuff happens in the woods! There’s also random people in the woods in these videos that start to follow people on adventures, possibly killers, witchcraft people, or other adventurers hiding or being oblivious. Either way try to explain some of the stuff you see in the woods in real life and videos!

I don’t understand why they keep saying they robbed a rich person. They robbed a museum. A rich person undoubtedly sponsored the thieves, so really it was a rich person robbing the public.
@@camiiii31 are you asking for facts? It’s a museum created by a woman via her will. All the artifacts inside were hers and she stipulated that the museum be created and her collection be displayed to the public forever. So no donated items. If you want to research it, I suggest you look it up or visit the Isabella Stuart Gardner museum yourself. It’s my favorite museum in Boston. I’ve visited many times, before and after the theft.
kathleen guay - im sorry, by "facts" i meant that the post was stating truth, basically saying i agree with the post!! i disagreed with that aspect of the video too! i was just expressing a shorthand statement of agreement/support!! :) i will look this up though! sounds like an amazing museum!
Taylor O'Dell I bet the Museum was behind it the whole time. They know where the alarm is and didn't fire the guard after breaking protocol THREE TIMES.
This is such an interesting case. The security guard was definitely a person of interest, particularly because of the way he was restrained. Both guards were in the basement but separated and Abarth was covered in an excessive amount of duct tape. Was basically around his entire head. Another theory is that the paintings were stolen by the Mafia. It wasn't uncommon to negotiate lesser sentences in exchanged for stolen artwork to be returned. This is supported by the fact they took the painting out of the frames. An experienced art theif would be a fool to risk damage to the art by cutting it out of the frame. And it took them additional time to remove them. Another theory states that the theifs were after a specific list that was given to them by someone that wanted art for their collection. This could be why they missed some more expensive pieces and why they returned to several rooms. I also wouldn't consider it a victimless crime neccesarilly. One of the paintings they stole was the only painting of the sea Rembrandt ever painted. It's a shame that it is no longer possible to see it in person.
They weren’t just stealing from the rich, Isabella was a woman who traveled and become friendly with artist but was fascinated with art, her entire life was dedicated to it. So much so that before she died she said if anybody moved around the paintings they would all be donated to a local college which is why the frames in which the art was stolen are still empty to this day. My mom worked there a couple years after the heist and our family goes there all the time. This might have to be my favourite episode yet ;)

I guess I get the spooky vibe thing, but with true crime, I never really found this series spooky or creepy, but I can get if others think that.
buzzfeed made it work
I was the person who made it 1k! I feel proud of myself.
@@chickenlittle2206 doesn’t have to be a guard I’m just saying anyone who knew the security was about to change could have been involved
I think it was 2 workers who may have wanted to let abathe in on it, being like "hey you want a slice of this? Make it a little easier for us and we'll give you a share" kind of deal. Respect either way lmao
your dedication to editing, research, and reenactment are truly amazing I love this episode especially
I think fact that the heist took place while security systems were being updated furthers the theory that it was an inside job.
Finna woke
i’m only at 1:20 and this is the theory im sticking with already
Yeah like they knew there was updates and knew where the police call button was? Yeeeeeeeah
Amy Lockwood probably former guards
I wonder if they checked the people installing the new security equipment or their friends.
I love the new addition of reenactments! It’s like one of those ID shows but with less stuffy hosts.

Also if your name is Isabella you get free admission to the museum for life.
ill have to tell my niece about getting in free cause thats her name.
That's a fun fun-fact with free admission xD
I have a suggestion for y'all....
How bout putting polls on videos so ppl can vote like who they think was the murderer...The poll would consist of all the suspects in the video and u could reveal the results at the end of the post mortem
Hope y'all like this idea
Himawari 216 YES!! THIS IS AWESOME
Thats such a good idea!!!
Himawari 216 i need this
Himawari 216 isn’t this buzzfeed UNSOLVED though
reddiestozier "reveal the results" of the polls, not the cases
When I went to the museum over the summer, there were still empty frames on the walls in the hope that the artwork may one day be returned
that's so sad omg lol
Wow.... But I do hope the return. :(
Boston Book Bitty And thats why this case is called *_UNSOLVED_* Okay?!?! OK
OMG Y'ALL GOT ACTORS NOW!!! BUZZFEED UNSOLVED MOVING ON UP!!!!
I think the actors are only for non-murder/non-supernatural related videos though XC I wish that they could do it in every video thooouuggghhh...
This has probably been said a millions times before on the old comments. But if I casted a movie - jack black is the obvious choice to play that security guard.
haha that’s definitely how i picture it
I have more of a Pete Davidson in my mind.
I can already smell his unwashed hair from here. Or maybe you could cast that guy from Jurassic Park
Seth Rogen or Matt Riddle
I have a Seth rogen or maybe jonah hill
How has this crime not been made into a "based on a true story" movie, it would make such a good comedy crime film XP

Eeeeeeeep. Jesus.

I'm so bad at remembering faces that even If I hang out with some random dude with 6-7 hours I wouldn't be able to remember his face after 2 hours
"he uhhhhh... he look like a man!"

AH THE QUALITY OF THIS VIDEO IS TOO GOOD!!! I love the whole new acting scenes, they're so well done!
Most stolen art resurfaces decades after, and with any luck we will not have the wait that long
Yeah. This isn't really a "stealing from the rich" type thing. It's more like stealing from the poor to give to the ultra wealthy.
Exactly!
its even sadder because the painting is actually almost positively destroyed do to bad containment
Lesson learned:
Don't underpay security guards
Or don’t hire these kind of people
@@Mr.Faust3 The kind of people that wont die for a painting?

“Actually let me write that down, get me that pen, wait I don’t care”

The director of security Anthony Amore actually did a talk at my school and he said Isabella Stewart Gardner never wanted the setup in the museum to change so they still have the empty spaces on the walls where the paintings should be and will hopefully one day be returned. He also wrote a book on this called Stealing Rembrandts for anyone who is interested.
Completely wild that the one detail that tipped off the guard was "Hey, they didn't frisk me! What?"
I've been laughing for 10 straight minutes at the CC Tinsley bit!

S T A T I C s h o c k probably not, this is the actual tragedy
I’ve been to the museum multiple times and it’s gorgeous and a shame that this happened.
this comment is really lovely.
Julia Cote Yeah. And the varnish is going to brown and ruin the painting!!
Shut up
Colleghting hudereds pices
the fact that you can see the empty frames where they cut it out is more interesting to me than some classical art shit i’m going there to see that stfu
Clearly the buyer wanted specific pieces if they left more expensive paintings
So a security expert comes in and sees their whole setup, and knows when they're going to be updating it, and then they get robbed RIGHT before they update it... hmmmmmm
Valerie Macias They did say they waited a while
Valerie Macias it does seem sketchy, or it just could of been bad timing..
Black Kakarot good timing
A Toaster well for the thieves yes... but we’re talking about security.
Valerie Macias I read that the Philly Mob may have been involved. This would explain support your theory as I'm sure they have connections in the security industry.

A perfect palette cleanser after watching too many spooky unsolved vids late at night
It's why I'm here. Trying to watch a good mystery before bed. Just don't want to watch too many spooky or gruesome mysteries today.

If he broke protocol once, they should’ve fired him lol. That’s just the museums fault.
My dad was a security guard there for a couple of years following the heist!
My uncle at Nintendo worked there!
