The funny thing is, tons of people would have absolutely no idea who he is - he wasn't nearly as famous as OJ then, or now - even with the notoriety the case (and "the chase") managed to achieve. I truly think it takes qualifies for being called of the trial of the century, for the 20th century. I was a kid when it was happening, and _everybody_ knew about/was talking about it (in the US anyway). I was supposed to make a little journal in grade school by my teacher and literally have my journal entry from the day of the verdict, writing about it, lol.

I remember watching it at my friend Darren's house whose parents were perpetually out of town so we kinda lived there many weekends (poor sweet Darren). Every giant tv in his house was playing it as they'd been playing sports but cut to the 'Moby Dick of broncos doing the slow crawl through Socal'. I know Cowlings was up there telling OJ,"look at all these ppl that love you, man". He was slow crawling so OJ could get a good look at all the crazies cheering and holding signs. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Especially the people on the bridges in my town... too weird.

@@azn1011 You have to remember, this is 90s LA. There were the Rodney King riots just a couple years before. And OJs entire trial became purely about race. There were already people on the streets of LA watching it, if they heard or saw cops roughing him up or doing anything even if was justified, there would have INSTANTLY been riots. Businesses were boarded up and closed on the day of trials verdict because people feared riots. Even Clinton was given a security briefing on nationwide riots that could happen. You think America is divided now? OHHHH BOY... look at pictures and videos of the verdict, you see every black person celebrating and every white person looking in disbelief.
And in a way, yeah, the cops did make it about race since they fucked up evidence so much and since Mark Fuhrman actually was a racist, that also made the jury far more sympathetic and doubtful.

I was about nine years old when this happened and I still have a very vivid memory of laying on the bed at night with my mom and her longtime boyfriend, watching this happen on TV in their bedroom, I still miss those days slang between them and watching TV.. It felt like it took forever, but it was not very long, less than hour, it was the hold out at the end that took a long time and you couldn’t see anything because they turned the lights off, combined with the quality of a crt tv it got very boring at the end. I think I fell asleep..
I just remember asking “who is OJ Simpson?” And my moms boyfriend said he was a very famous former football player who turned into an actor, but as a kid in the 90’s, I had no clue who the guy was until he went to court and became infamous.
I also remember listening to the police call to OJ and thinking as a 9 year old with no prior biases to him “this guy really did it. Everything he says and sounds like is super guilty” and I couldn’t believe there was even a trial and he was found not guilty

I found it pretty baffling even then as a teenager watching it all on TV. But I think in context it can be understood a little better. OJ’s arrest and trial happened just 2-3 years after the Rodney King beating and LA riots. There was a lot of hatred and mistrust of the LAPD and the criminal justice system in the Black community and elsewhere, and that was very actively harnessed by OJ’s legal team and his sympathizers in the media and public. Which is extra ironic, even cynical, given how little OJ wanted to be associated with Black culture or politics during his career. Also, there was much less understanding of both DNA forensics and intimate partner violence’s connection to homicide then vs now.
I encourage you and anyone else to watch the “30 for 30” ESPN documentary about OJ Simpson and this case, it was both eye-opening and infuriating

Something really disgusting that not a lot of people know about is how the jury acted. It was admitted years and years later by jury members that they full on knew OJ was guilty but they refused to convict him because of the Rodney King situation not too long before everything went down. And the way one of the jurors talked about it in an interview is just sickening. Smug smile, talks about letting a m u r d e r e r go like it was the right thing to do and that they did the right thing. No. You can protest for Rodney King in other ways that are impactful and will lead to change WITHOUT LETTING HIM LOOSE! And the thing that's even more damning is how for a while prior to the deaths; there were lots of calls to the local police about OJ hurting Nicole. And the cops at the time were so "buddy-buddy" with him that it was brushed off once he came outside and gave his story of events. And then when everything happened... If you've seen the crime scene photos... You'll know that... it was... unbelievably vi*lent... and so... so horrific... You can literally see it step by step as it unfolded because of the splatter on the walls and floor and how it was dragged across the place. Horrific. Horrifying. And neither of them deserved it.

I think a lot of it has to do with the changing nature of celebrities. In the '90s, there was a limited number of TV and radio channels, so a much larger proportion of the public watched the same shows and commercials, listened to the same songs, and recognized the same celebrities. Now, the internet is so full of niche celebrities that it's possible - and common - for someone to be extremely famous and recognized by millions of people, yet completely unknown to a majority of the public. Everyone can now tailor their media consumption much more specifically towards their own interests, and as a result, many celebrities nowadays are household names to some and completely unknown to others.

Lots of history channels do it to the same effect and look just as good in presentation. Not to say the effort is not commendable but it's disingenuous to single out one or two youtubers with the praise for it when so many others are working just as hard.
