    At the bar a while back the bartender and I had been talking about our mutual love of Lost when she decided to put the show on. A lot of the bar joked about it and talked shit about it, but before the first part of the pilot was over, we'd turned off the jukebox and put the sound on. The people that had shit on it without really watching it much or at all were suddenly invested and asking me all sorts of questions. When I finally went home I think they were on episode 6.

My mom was pregnant with me while it was airing, and she used to tell me about how my dad would watch it while she went to bed early cause I had her up all night as a baby. She would mention the show a lot, how it was innovative and worked with flashbacks and forward flashes, always making me interested in it, but I never actually tried to watch it until I watched this video. "Lost is a show that needs to be binged"
    I agree it works well binged, but my favorite part of watching Lost as it came out was the theorycrafting, the podcasts that analyzed every frame of the episode to find all the little clues and Easter eggs and (more often than not) red herrings that the show provided. Granted the months-long hiatuses were killer, but the community that loved Lost really flourished because of the weekly nature of the show, not in spite of it.

    • @KS-xk2so
      @KS-xk2so 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      I was in my late teen & early twenties when Lost came out. It was the last show I religiously HAD to watch as it came out on Thursday nights, since you needed to have seen it to be able to theorize and chat about it the next day in the office. I loved theorizing about the show..... that being said, looking back, I think the crazy theorizing and mystery hunting actually hurt the show at the time. When they didn't provide every single answer by the end of the series, people were pissed off and shit on they Finale. They were so focused on that they missed out on the beautifully interwoven story about this group of characters.

    • @laurarules3642
      @laurarules3642 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@KS-xk2so To be fair the shows creators did encourage the mystery hunting and theories because it supplied them with unlimited free publicity . Even a lot of the official merchandise about the show encouraged viewers to solve the puzzles of the island. I agree with you though it was one of the last television shows I was hooked on religiously . I got given the first season on some pirated DISCS by an online friend. The show hadn't even been released in the UK yet so I was in the handful of chosen ones who got to see it before everyone else. Then it was difficult to get the episodes as they dropped in the US so I used something called LIMEWIRE I think it was that was used to pirate CDS to get the episodes and I would go straight to IDB forums to argue with others about the episode . Then a cable network got the rights to LOST and I actually bought the package off them to get the last couple of seasons. Like EVERYONE else here and everyone online at the time I was absolutely disgusted with the ending and furious. Of course back then you had the LOST APOLOGISTS as they were known who tried feebly and pathetically to defend the show but ultimately failed and they still have the lost apologists today. Anyway I bought the boxset and have re-watched it every now and again and I am now at peace with the ending and accept it.

      Yeah, the counter to the idea that "it's a show that needs to be binged to be appreciated because who is going to keep it all together over a long period of time," is the idea of pouring over the shown in-between episodes. There were ways to stay engaged with it when you weren't watching it and for those interested in doing so, it was a unique experience that's hard to replicate.

    My parents watched Lost while it was airing and I was a little kid. I remember so vividly being scared shitless by the soundtrack because I could hear it from my bedroom while they watched. I never even saw the show but I was scared to watch it for so long. I went and watched the whole thing partly because of this video, and I knew I’d come back and watch it after I finished. Well, I just watched the finale about 5 minutes ago and here I am. Thank you Drew for focusing on the soundtrack and composer so much here, those songs truly scarred me as a child (in the best way possible). I’m still in shock at how underrated this show is, especially the ending. I’ve heard so many people saying over the years that the ending was terrible, so I had mentally prepared myself for that. I've literally just finished watching Lost yesterday and I cried like a baby. The ending was definitely not what I was expecting but I still liked it very much. Seeing everybody happy and reunited was truly beautiful. Lost is definitely one of the best shows I've ever watched. It made me completely invested in the story from the episode one. The constant drama, mystery, theories makes you addicted. The plot itself was genius and everything was so thought of. It's truly amazing

    If you haven't watched The Leftovers (also Damon Lindelof who did Lost), you'd probably love it. I feel like he learned the lessons he needed to from Lost, and that's why it's probably the tightest 3-season TV arc of all time. Incredible show.

    • @Romans8-9
      @Romans8-9 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Leftovers benefited from being a cable show that's why it's tight. I'd argue the characters from Lost are infinitely more intriguing than the cast of the Leftovers though.

    • @melrupinski88
      @melrupinski88 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Romans8-9Agreed. The Leftovers had a known number of episodes to get to the ending, so everything could be strictly planned out with no filler. Lost, had to deal with 22 episode seasons, no set ending timeframe (network wanted at least 10 seasons, producers wanted 3), a writers strike, main characters wanting to leave, etc.
      While I also agree that the Lost characters were more interesting, I’d have to give a slight nod to the cast of The Leftovers in terms of acting, especially Justin Theroux and Carrie Coon.

    Fun fact: the writers actually had no idea which characters were going to get screen time and many actors were left not knowing wether they would have prominent roles. This is a kind of serendipitous day. I saw this video in my feed around a year ago and clicked on it like the loyal Guy I am. I was fully ready to watch this whole video and have Lost spoiled, but as I sat through the intro I remembered the mysterious air the show had to me growing up; a strange show about plane crash survivors, and the way my dad excitedly babbled about it. I closed out of the video, and decided to watch the show, and come back when I was done. Little did I know that I was embarking on a year long journey. I began the show with my dad, and it kept us connected as I went off to my first year of college. I enjoyed watching it with the friends I made there. After long breaks between watching, I quickly remembered how invested I was in these characters. I saw the struggles of the characters in the show, and it made me feel less alone. Today, I finished the series. I sobbed as I watched what were once flawed and damaged people grow and complete their stories. As the series came to a close I felt that uncommon but welcomed ache when you say goodbye to a series and characters that resonate with you. I sent a text to my dad, and he made me aware that the day I chose to finish the show is the air date of the series finale 13 years to the day. It then only felt right that I finish the show on such a strange and almost predestined note. And now, after watching a full series recap (because this show is so fucking confusing) I am sitting in the dark at 1:42 in the morning getting ready to watch a video that I have traveled a long, sometimes arduous, but totally worthwhile path to see. All this to say, if you somehow read this, thanks Drew for being the Jacob to my flight 815. Maybe that was a bad analogy, but thank you for introducing me to one of my favorite shows ever. Such a fabulous, messy and heartfelt ride this has been. And if you’re a random internet traveler that decided to read my silly little story, I’m glad our paths intersected for even a short time. Just know that love keeps us all connected, and best of luck to you on finding your constant. See you in another life, brother.

      Look up the title names in his other soundtracks. Almost every track is based on puns from what happens in the movie. Like he has a running gag where he calls a track "World's worst X" so the Venice action scene in Spiderman far from home is called "World's worst water feature" and the end fight in Mission impossible Ghost protocol is called "World worst parking valet"

    The soundtrack comment is absolutely spot on, I don't think Twin Peaks would have such a recognisable atmosphere without Angelo Badalamenti's soundtrack. Just hearing any of the tracks makes you feel like you're in Twin Peaks, and it does so much work establishing the setting and tone of the show. I can't even think of any of the scenes without the tracks playing along in my head.

    Leitmotif is the word drew is looking for when talking about the melodies being reused in different context and different accompaniment to create different feelings. That recurring melody is the leitmotif and I personally absolutely love when they are used well.
    I think they're fairly common but I only really care about the music of things I already like so I wouldn't be surprised if it's actually uncommon but I just consume a lot of things with leitmotifs

    • @chumuheha
      @chumuheha 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      It is common, or at least it's common in films with good film scoring. Leitmotifs are like a third of the reason why characters and plots are compelling, because your brain subconsciously makes associations and recollections when it hears the same theme.

    thank you deeply drew, I watched this video last summer and i decided to start lost, i binged it and stayed up all nights just to watch it. I think it is and will always be my fav show of all time. Fun fact: a melody or phrase linked to a specific character or idea is called a leitmotif! Musicals do this all the time, especially the part where they transform leitmotifs to fit the changing narrative

    I binged Lost on Netflix back in high school in 2010. It was my mom's favorite show and I wanted to see what the hype was all about. Glad I did. I still think about the show, its ups and downs, the emotional moments, what could have been had it been planned out from the beginning, had there been no writers strike, had the show had more time to explore the avenues they wanted to.

    I’ve always told people that Michael Giacchino is the reason we cry during Pixar films.
    Lost has maybe the best score in TV history.

    Drew, THANK YOU. I've watched LOST only twice-once as it aired on ABC (start to finish) and once a couple years later binged on Netflix-and even though I've tried to start it again, I couldn't bring myself to get past a few episodes of S1. I'm now reconsidering that.
    It was my favorite show for a long time and I even enjoyed the ending when it premiered, so I'm really happy to hear such a great take on it. Also, Giacchino has been one of my favorite composers for several years now, too, and I'm really happy to hear others appreciate the glory of great music. 🙌

    Lost is my favorite show, I used to watch it as a kid because my mom had the first two seasons on DVD and I would always watch them.. and then I finished the entire series years later and now I'm rewatching it again! It's amazing

    I think the interesting thing about LOST is that it absolutely would've benefitted from being in a streaming age but at the same time the airing week-to-week and discourse absolutely helped build the interest and hype about the show. In a world where LOST dropped a season at a time onto Netflix it probably would've ultimately been better for the plot but simultaneously it would've been way more forgettable in the long run.
    Like, they did a whole-ass ARG (that I was super into) in between seasons 2 and 3 involving multiple websites, other companies working LOST stuff into their ads and websites, a podcast, and a bad paperback novel written for the express purpose of plugging the show. I can't imagine an original IP today doing that, even popular ones like Stranger Things.
    I _kind of_ think Disney's re-learning the power of generating hype for its shows by releasing them weekly... but then again the only things they've done that with so far are its Marvel and Star Wars shows and those are giant behemoths that will never die and not untested IPs at all.

      They did the weekly thing with the Mysterious Benedict Society and HSMTMTS as well

      I think HBO airing Game of Thrones weekly definitely helped its popularity; it kept people talking about it both in person and online for months at a time. Whereas when shows get released all at once on Netflix, they're talked about on social media for like a week and then fade into obscurity until the next season; they don't really have enduring cultural impact like something like Game of Thrones did.

    • @Choekaas
      @Choekaas 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The crazy thing about the ARG was how invested people were. I mean, to uncover the secrets in the later stage of the game you had to find glyphs all over the world. They could be in a shop window in Sydney, in Times Squarel, on a Korean website or in a park in London. And people jumped right into it. People talk about how big Game of Thrones was, and it's true - it was - but Lost fandom in 2005-2006 was insane.

    I started watching Drew so long ago and thought "oh his just a silly funny guy from the big three", and now im constantly rewatching all of his videos bc he's so well spoken, the way he talks makes the videos he makes rewatcheble to the point i can quote them. He's smart and always makes great points, to the point i forget the video was supposed to just be funny and now im learning (and it applies to most of his videos not only this one) love your work drew
