i don’t understand why ryan was so quick to dismiss the big wave cause it wasn’t in the logs... maybe they didn’t write it in the logs cause they were busy being hit by a giant wave
I mean, he didn’t really dismiss that theory because when Shane said it couldn’t have been waves because they reported everything was fine afterwards, Ryan explicitly stated that that isn’t necessarily true because of the reason you said.
Would the logs not have been wet and caused the writing to be hard to read? Cause if it was a wave I don’t think the logs or much in the lighthouse would have been found cause if it can take bodies, it can take a book.
I looked it up and they really should’ve emphasized more about how these logs were probably fake. They made it seem like they were likely legitimate, but it seems like this is just a rumour that spread.

@@dannytwomey9071 There are already records of 300ft waves hitting the island and the keepers said there was a storm (something supported by Mackenzie not being able to see the lighthouse for over a week), so I don't think lack of energy is really an issue here

What they don't mention in this video is that Ducat was fined roughly a week's wages earlier for not affixing the boxes to the moorings properly. My theory is that he didn't want to risk another fine so took Marshall down to do the repairs (the faults having been noted in the log) and left Marshall behind in the lighthouse (as per the rules). It was at that point that Marshall saw the huge wave coming and rushed out, not bothering to don his coat, to warn the other two. But he got there just as the wave struck and all 3 were washed out to sea. It was later noted that a large rock had been dislodged in that area by an "unknown force" and moved some 150 feet. Which gives you an idea of how powerful the wave was. So the tragedy happened primarily because the head keeper didn't want another fine - and he timed the visit to the cliff edge just as the freak wave came hurtling towards the island. (ps - I'm Scottish, from that area, and your impersonations were the worst I've ever heard! Worth watching just for that!).

Fun fact: lighthouse keepers were known to go insane due to the high exposure to mercury which may have had something to do with what happened at this lighthouse.
I know that they are not in the office, but every time the camera goes to Shane I get scared that the mannequin is gonna be there in the shadows. EDIT: NEVERMIND I FOUND IT
I don't understand why the Gamekeeper isn't a key suspect here. He doesn't do his job properly for nearly two weeks and that just happens to coincide with the disappearance of the Keepers.
Fun fact: The log books were actually made up much later as a dramatic retelling of a story in a magazine, so the men still being at the lighthouse after the storm occurred couldn’t have happened. The most likely reason for their disappearance was because they were going after a toolbox that they accidentally left out, and would suffer a paycut as they were fined if anything was lost or damaged. And considering one of the lighthouse managers lost a piece of equipment in a storm before and was fined for it, it would make sense for them to go out so they wouldn’t get punished due to their meager salary of 42 shillings.
For the post mortem: As a person who lives on a coastal town in Scotland the fact that one of them went out without a jacket in December and how their logs said it was cold makes me confused because If you’ve lived on a coastal town in the winter the wind is freezing and you know better something else happened on that island
@Denix Vames But if there was a storm there wouldn’t have been silence? Although maybe if the silence did make them go mad they could have imagined the storm.
I don't get why one of the theories isn't that there was an unknown boat that came in contact with the island, they asked the keepers for help, they rushed out (explaining missing coat) but it was actually a trap. The boat would have been a pirate boat looking to take 3, un-watched, strong, and good for manual labor men who they could sell in the labor market or just keep for themselves.
@@Aidan_7 not necessarily, If the men jumped on board to help or if they were in the water already. The waves could have also washed away any sign of struggle.
But two of the light keepers are experienced and falling for pirates easily would be unreal, depends if they were really drunk or been hallucinating at that time. One of them should have given a sign like writing on the log or an emergency signal like the disc or smtng. Cause it came also to my mind that kind of theory but being an experienced lighthouse keeper can make you think all possible things that might happen in the lighthouse and later on think of ways to prevent it. They took the risk of the job which i guess should have made them at least prepared especially that they have family.
I've been watching these episodes quite a lot recently and what's just dawned on me is that while Shane doesn't believe in ghosts, he does seem to believe in happy endings. It's actually sweet how often in these disappearance episodes he brings up them disappearing on purpose to go live happy lives.
Yeah, that was a wierd statment to make. I was about to write a comment saying waves can easily reach WAAAY above 100 feet on open sea, but then he contradicted himself a minute later.
For post mortem: The reason that British Lighthouses had teams of three keepers was because of an incident called the Smalls Lighthouse Tragedy where one of the two keepers died in an accident. The other keeper was terrified of being accused of murder, since the two of them had been known to feud, and so tied the body in a makeshift coffin outside the lighthouse to try and preserve it, but the coffin broke and released an arm in such a way that in the wind it seemed to beckon to the remaining keeper, who had lost his mind by the time he was finally relieved. Could something similar have happened here, where two of the three keepers were accidentally killed, and the remaining one lost his mind out of the fear of being blamed?
for post mortem: Hey ghouligans! I'm from the Isle of Lewis (mentioned in the video) and I studied this in school! One thing that wasn't mentioned was that when investigators came upon the scene inside the lighthouse, the dinner was ready and untouched at the table, and a chair was toppled over as if it was all left urgently. He also left his coat behind which adds to this theory. Great to have the boys back, Happy spooky season! x
I agree with the person above me! This comment is great and you should definitely put it under the pinned comment at the top. Hopefully the boys will see this because this is a great detail!!
i don't know, i'm a sailor myself. i have over 5 years of sailing experience and any knowledge i have on how the ocean behaves is half estimation and half fact. is it unlikely for an extremely large wave to come up suddenly and wash away three fully grown men after a huge storm? yes, but it feasibly COULD happen. if they were outside checking to see if the storm was gone or working outside, the storm could've had one final fit and got them. i definitely believe that they were briefly checking outside on the status of the storm, hence the coat being left behind, and they were blindsided. the fact that there had been prior 300 ft waves and they were at 110 ft- it's possible.
The western landing showed signs of damage and areas above 200ft also showed damage from either a wave or the storm. Near the west landing was a box in which gear was stored and one of the keepers had previously been fined for not securing properly in a previous storm. They were almost definitely blown off or swept away.
It could’ve also been something as simple as all 3 of them falling from the iron railing. Iron is especially prone to rust from salt water, and maybe they all leaned on it to talk about whatever, and their combined weight made it give way. Falling 50 feet into water can potentially break bones, so 110 feet wouldn’t have made for a fun landing. Then, the current could’ve swept them further out to sea. Admittedly, it would be odd for all 3 of them to fall with it, but not impossible.
Being Scottish, the accent is not offensive. I love when someone tries a Scottish accent to see how terrible it is, I’m not disappointed. 10/10 for effort, 4/10 for execution.
And when he was talking about how it takes a lot more than blood to scare him, Like lmao ok Ryan we're just supposed to eat some magic grass and forget about how you get scared by wind every time you go ghost hunting?
For postmortem: It was also reported that the table inside the living quarters was set like the keepers were just about to sit down for dinner. The stopped clocks could have also meant they had no idea what day it was and that's why the logged storm was so out of place.
Yeah, I feel like not enough attention was paid to the stopped clocks. Were they all stopped at the same time, as if by some event, or had they each just slowly stopped working randomly? Etc.
@@JustWandering during that time clocks were still wound up manually, so someone had to do this every day or so around the same time, so the clocks may have been somewhat synchronized or enough time had passed so that every clock had "run out" - that's probably why the clocks weren't a major factor in this investigation
@@JustWandering Maybe even if all the clocks stopped at a similar time it could just be because a lot of old clocks had to be kept turning once a day or week. My grandmother has some clocks like that and if no one pulls some weights once every few days or turns a key some rounds they would just stop moving. She does that most times around the same time so she can restart in a way all at once. So it would make sense for me that if no one took care of that in the lighthouse the clocks would just stop at some point maybe around the same time if they had a similar system like my grandma
@@jackleface2903 The fact that the flag was down kinda fits into the theory about the storm for me. Like I am no expert for flags but then a heavy storm comes or takes place normally you want to get the vulnerable stuff inside or out of danger, like a flag so it doesn't gets ripped apart or something
Ok so, I'm just gonna pitch in here and say that as someone who's lived and spent most of my life on Scottish islands and has worked with Ships and lighthouses frequently, waves that height and that powerful are not uncommon, I've personally seen lighthouses higher than the Flannan Isles light get hit by a wave. Waves of such a size often come with very little warning and are usually mixed in with more moderate waves. The idea of them being washed out to sea while working on the Jetty isn't too "out there" either, especially considering even in the Royal Navy most men couldn't swim in this time period and in more recent years people have been swept out to sea from far safer locations. The sea is dangerous and disappearances relating to it are not uncommon along the Scottish coasts.
Not to mention, wool clothes to keep the cold out are extremely heavy and will pull a person down even further, especially if they can't swim either. I think of the men had a nervous breakdown and tried to kill himself by jumping in the ocean. The guys ran out to go get him but we're all pulled out and drowned
@@valpardo6405 You have a point being isolated on a island is bad for anyone's sanity, add huge sweeping waves and a higher probability of death without out anyone knowing. That probably sent one or all of them over the edge, and no that's not a pun...
I just wish a real Scotsman had said the line so we could all practice. Lol. I’m pretty sure I spent 20 minutes doing a bad impression of Ryan’s bad impression. 🤣🤣
I bet it haunted him for the rest of his life, not knowing what happened to his co-workers. Unless he met them again in Heaven and they explained what happened. But still, it'd be pretty gut wrenching.
Not like that but if a wave 300 ft high hit the island and the lighthouse, there would be evidence like salty water on the woods or wet clothes, equipments inside the building having water in them, other items swept up etc.
Well I guess the only unbelievable thing about this theory is that one of the guys didn't grab his coat although it was late December. Oh and also in the logs there was nothing saying anything about that. If they were contemplating leaving the island together they would have at least wrote where they were going, maybe not exactly why, but that they were going 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞. But it still is a sweet theory. Sorry if I went to in-depth about this.
@@mortis.1618 it’s fine. i just made this comment as a joke. i don’t think that is a very plausible theory, since (like you said) there is no evidence in the logs about them contemplating leaving the island and that the one had forgotten his coat in december. i feel like maybe one had fallen in the water and got swept under a wave and when the other 2 tried to help him, they also got swept under
Ryan: Takes a little more nuance to scare the Bergmeister. *cut to Ryan being startled by a disco ball* *cut to Ryan being scared by Shane's fart* *cut to Ryan screaming after feeling a breeze on his hand*
An interesting thing to look into would be if this area, or the ocean area around this island is prone to seaquakes. Especially since geographically it isn't that far off iceland, which is a volcanic region, maybe a sea quake occured that cause massive waves coupled with a storm. The men thought the storm had subsided, only to be surprised by a massive tsunami like wave. It would explain why they were outside despite there being stormy weather. Maybe they tried retrieving the swept away resources and they were surprised by that wave.
Quakes in Scotland are rare most occur along the Great Glen and Highland boundary fault and rarely reach 5 on the Richter scale. I live in that area and have only felt one in my life that barely shook anything. Flannen Isles are only 18 miles off the Hebrides and I cannot find a single recorded earthquake there! Had seaquake caused a 100ft wave at Flannen its going to hit the Hebrides as well and be obvious what happened. My thoery is something simple like one of them fell in for some reason and the other two were lost trying to rescue him
for post mortem: did no one have a further look into that guy who was in charge of looking after the three? like the lighthouse had not been visible for two weeks and he didn’t do anything? he could have been associated with their disappearance. like a low paying job etc would make everyone believe it was probably just mistake/incompetence but maybe thats why he got away
He really should have been charged [edit: with negligence]. I mean he agreed to be the only means of communication for those on the island. Sometimes, people's blind optimism can have grave conciquences.
I'm only two minutes in, so maybe it's already been covered in the episode, but *as a farmer*, it is more common for sheep (and goats, for that matter) to give birth to twins than single babies. We have a fairly small flock, but it's generally expected that we'll get at least one set of triplets every couple years. It's more likely that having sheep graze on the island benefited them because when you have a flock on the same pasture for a while, the nutrients in the grass decrease, and the parasites in it increase. You have to switch sheep to different pastures every few months to keep them on good grass and keep the parasites down.
Shane: I cried at *Little Women* a year ago. Ryan: The film, right? Shane: No, I just saw some little women on the street and sobbed. Ryan: Why are they so little? I laughed so hard at this part. 😭🤣 Edit: Thank you so much for all the likes.

I know no one really cares but the weather stuff sounds like they were experiencing what’s called a micro burst. Microbursts usually start with rain or similar conditions then abruptly change to very strong winds then get calm again then finally become even stronger winds often times bringing thunder or lightning. Micro bursts are also very small, less than 2 km, meaning that back then no one outside of the island would know about it because they lacked satellites and radar in 1900. Source: I’m a meteorology student
@@ax3772 Weather seemed calm and he thought he'd only be out there for a minute? Or the others might have been in trouble at the shore and he rushed out to help?
I'm Scottish and if like me you live in the Highlands, you know all those stories about sprites and faeries are all still widely believed today. The idea that the men may have offended a faerie or sprite which then turned them into the three birds sat atop the lighthouse would not be completely unreasonable... especially with the local farmers believing the islands had magical qualities anyway. The Scottish Highlands and Islands are filled with stories and places like that - it can be a very superstitious place, especially among older locals. But i don't believe it was aliens lol.
@@nathandavis6061 No they aren't. The British Isles has multiple national identities not everyone is British or would identify as such including the Scottish. Other national identities include Irish and Welsh, They all consider themselves different and have different language and dialects.

Very odd how the clocks stopped, was it a coincidence that they broke or did the keepers stop them before they left? Can’t think of any other explanations
Maybe the clocks got water damage in one of those big freak waves that swept the light keepers away, then dried out over the course of the two weeks it took for the lookout to report the light was out.
Thank you guys, the clocks was the one thing I couldn't really connect to a rogue wave or pirates or something, but I totally forgot that clocks would have needed to be wound back then XD
yep. most places in Gaidhlig and Gaeilge speaking areas have quiet uninventive names. but I guess if you trace other languages back you'll get stuff just as boring before the mutations.
This is a fascinating story. What could possibly have happened to the three lighthouse keepers? I think the fact that one of them went out without his jacket could mean whatever happened was sudden. What makes the most sense is that they were somehow swept out to sea, but how? This is one of those mysteries I unfortunately don’t think we’ll ever have the answers for.
It is fascinating. Especially when you take into account; A) that's the North Sea they are in, and waves get HUGE, over 100ft. is not unusual, B) the lamp they were using was floated on a LOT of mercury so it moved without friction, and part of the duties would be to keep that pool of mercury clear of debris and refill it as needed. Due to the amount of mercury vapors inhaled, many lighthouse keepers went mad...just like hat makers, and for the same reason, inhalation of poison gas. If you want to see what the North Sea can be like, check out a few videos from bigwavemaster. He is on a 110ft. rescue boat in the North Sea, and posts videos of storms, shipboard life and some of the drills and real rescues they do. That piece of water is known for its storms and waves. The fishing boat Andrea Gail, (Storm of the Century) was out there during a major hurricane and was lost with all hands. ✌😸
I think science kinda figured it out by now. we know now about rogue waves, which are way bigger than an average wave, which in the North Sea is already bigger than average. plus, if it happened at night, they probably wouldn't have seen it until it was pretty close and too late to hunker down. it sounds insane to think a 300ft wave could sneak up on anyone, but the ocean is a terrifying place with immense power we are barely beginning to understand. back then, I bet that would've sounded ludicrous, but today, we have footage of such waves.
For the post mortem: What if we combine two theories,,, and the gay lighthouse tripod JOINED the water sprites and lived happily ever after as gay mermen in Atlantis? (With the lost colony of Roanoke, of course)
The lighthouse keepers: "There were terrible storms." The board: "There were no storms." The gamekeeper: "Dude I couldn't even see the lighthouse for 2 weeks." I feel like this just confirms that there was localized weather and it didn't get reported by anyone because this gamekeeper didn't mention anything until after the fact.
He was being paid £8 a year I mean fair enough he doesn't do his job well lol Edit: This is a joke I know about the value of money changing over time chill
@@mazs199 £8 in 1900 is equivalent to £991 in 2019, but back then, it was a fair amount of money to earn. For instance, servants could earn like £2 a year
I can totally see Shane as a cryptic old man who lives in a lighthouse and mysteriously disappears, sparking internet speculation, having in reality been taken by a rogue wave as he stood by the sea. He is eaten by sea creatures and his ghost haunts the lighthouse, content with his own death but eternally pissed at the idiots who replaced him.
post mortem: shane, how is it that you can write entire songs about niche characters and events throughout history, but somehow can't rhyme two sentences on the spot
Postmortem: We live on an island on the west coast of Scotland, and mid December is terrifying for storms. Even living on a sheltered bay, you can feel the waves pounding the shoreline and the noise is scary. Countless folk have been washed away by waves even when the weather is otherwise calm. In the lighthouse they may not have logged a storm in terms of wind but waves linger for two to three days after, and it just takes one big boy to sweep you all away.
Although I believe it was a case of freak weather, the mental image of lighthouse keepers being abducted by aliens because they were attracted to a big light like moths is so funny to me

Surely if pirates kidnapped them there would be signs of violence or struggle
@@Aidan_7 not necessarily, If the men jumped on board to help or if they were in the water already. The waves could have also washed away any sign of struggle.
@@justaname4136 you're right!
My teacher told us about this in primary school and scared the crap out of me lol 😆
i don't know, i'm a sailor myself. i have over 5 years of sailing experience and any knowledge i have on how the ocean behaves is half estimation and half fact. is it unlikely for an extremely large wave to come up suddenly and wash away three fully grown men after a huge storm? yes, but it feasibly COULD happen. if they were outside checking to see if the storm was gone or working outside, the storm could've had one final fit and got them. i definitely believe that they were briefly checking outside on the status of the storm, hence the coat being left behind, and they were blindsided. the fact that there had been prior 300 ft waves and they were at 110 ft- it's possible.
Yeah, I think to this day we don't actually know why Rogue waves happen.

Etc.
@@JustWandering during that time clocks were still wound up manually, so someone had to do this every day or so around the same time, so the clocks may have been somewhat synchronized or enough time had passed so that every clock had "run out" - that's probably why the clocks weren't a major factor in this investigation
also why was the flag down
@@JustWandering Maybe even if all the clocks stopped at a similar time it could just be because a lot of old clocks had to be kept turning once a day or week.
Phantom waves are a documented oceanic phenomenon.
@@MiniM69 Correct.
Thanks for the input
Not to mention, wool clothes to keep the cold out are extremely heavy and will pull a person down even further, especially if they can't swim either. The biggest island, big island, named bc it is, in fact, a big island
Finally a logical explanation!

@@mr.bubbles8351 dined?
@@JonPITBZN ohhh lol. Cuz even the captions said dined. Had me confused

Maybe the clocks got water damage in one of those big freak waves that swept the light keepers away, then dried out over the course of the two weeks it took for the lookout to report the light was out.

@@PhoenixLyon This is probably the most educational comment I've read all week. Cheers!
And the people lost in the Bermuda Triangle!
They're all just having gay times down there
@@hi_flops I should join them!!
This is now the only theory I will accept
Lmao I read this comment before listening to the theories
The lighthouse keepers: "There were terrible storms."
The board: "There were no storms."
The gamekeeper: "Dude I couldn't even see the lighthouse for 2 weeks."
I feel like this just confirms that there was localized weather and it didn't get reported by anyone because this gamekeeper didn't mention anything until after the fact.
"There were no storms in Ba Sing Se"
He was being paid £8 a year I mean fair enough he doesn't do his job well lol
Edit: This is a joke I know about the value of money changing over time chill
@@mazs199 That was in 1900, it's worth a lot more now, and that wasn't his primary job, it was a side thing.
@@mazs199 £8 in 1900 is equivalent to £991 in 2019, but back then, it was a fair amount of money to earn. For instance, servants could earn like £2 a year
The gamekeeper just said he couldn’t see the light, he never said it was because of storms.
Gamekeeper was possibly an Imposter. He wasn't doing his tasks.

I can't believe Shane is still alive after everything he's said
And how he tried to summons Ann bell
Because demons don’t exist.
Nah supernatural creatures just avoiding him...he's too much to deal with 😂😂😂😂😂
Lower demons are scared for their being around him. He probably has a direct contact with Lucifer
Edit:spelling
I’m Scottish and I can say with confidence that Shane’s accent was horrible but was definitely better than Ryan’s😂😂😂
😂 same!
Right? It was so funny, they were both so bad
@@RaeEwe Ryan sounded Russian?! Hahahaha
Ditto
THEY WERE BOTH SO BAD LOL
I could sleep to Ryan's narrating voice, doesn't matter if he's talking about murder
Same I do it all the time no nightmares.
I have fallen asleep to his voice
*Especially if he's talking about murder.*
😳
I feel like it has to do with the way he says his "P's", which is weird, because, I mean, "P" only has one sound to it :P
This is still the best True Crime episode. The energy they have from finally being back together after the VID lockdown is shining.
"This week on Buzzfeed Unsolved..."
And with those five words, life got 100x better.

You can say that again!
my life got EVEN better when he mentioned a household case in Scotland! I live here so it's like wooh representation!
post mortem: shane, how is it that you can write entire songs about niche characters and events throughout history, but somehow can't rhyme two sentences on the spot

Don't send any hate ❤
Idk as someone whose lived on the coast all my life, I'm always ready to believe the ocean is capable of anything
Postmortem:
We live on an island on the west coast of Scotland, and mid December is terrifying for storms.
Just one big boy. The Shane of waves.
Do you guys have water spouts over there?
That sounds TERRIFYING
That’s what I’m betting happened, the sea is the most unpredictable and strong force
Yeah I’m Scottish too and pretty certain a big storm / wave wiped them out. Scottish islands are absolutely ruthless
The greatest series ever is back!

Cough cough looking for likes cough cough
@@Bm-yz3hd *cough cough* bold the cough cough for added effect *cough cough*
@@a.person4761 nah, puppet history isn't all that. The best series by shane and ryan is: Buzzfeed Unsolved & Are You Scared? In my opinion :)
In my opinion respectfully the best series is unsolved paranormal and are you scared and too many spirits
The disgust on Shane’s face knowing Ryan is going down the rabbit hole with his alien theory is priceless 🙈😭
@Катя Фомина why?
Although I believe it was a case of freak weather, the mental image of lighthouse keepers being abducted by aliens because they were attracted to a big light like moths is so funny to me
