I’m getting ready to use the brush pens I bought about three months ago but have been hesitating to start without seeing how it is done. Your demonstrations are beautiful and a a great help. Thank you very much for sharing your skill and knowledge.
100% agree. I just bought my first set of Zigs (I'm years late to the party. Ha!) and have been watching every Zig You Tube video I can find. This one is the best teaching/tutorial! The lighting & camera placement give a perfect view of her working, and demonstrating all the methods together reveal the slight differences in the results. This will be my go-to video as I try these Zigs out. Thank you so much, Art Spirits! ❤
Amazing vid! You show how amazing work is doable and not scary, even for the beginner. Everyone wants to know how to shade like that and you're apparently the one to teach it. Teach girl, teach 😊
I am a super newbie.....a REAL beginner. I have the tools and have watched a truck load of vids on how to use the brush pens but none have compared....have taught me what I really need to know, how to like yours. I am so happy I came across this. Thank you so much for sharing. I ''Liked' and 'Sub'd' and am going to check out your other vids :D
Thank you a million times over for this in-depth video! I am new and eager to the real brush pens medium and you have made the introduction so amazing! Also trying to decide between Arteza ( just ordered by 48 pack) and Zig (which I will order immediately). I also already have the Botanical Illustrations book, so THANK YOU again for this video which is actually a course!
I love your attention to detail. I understand that focus and patience is required to get great results like you do. Thanks so much for the in depth instructions!!
Thank you so much for this video. I have learned so much and your techniques work so well. Now I can use my zig markers as they are meant to be used. Thanks again!
Absolutely best video I have seen on brush pens. Thanks so much for the great information. What black pen did you use for your drawings that was water fast?
New to watercolours . . . Wanted to use markers and your video has so inspired me, thank you so much!! A solid, in depth tutorial, carried out with great technique. I've learnt so much More tutorials please . . . Mollie xx
You are so good. At first I wasn't to hyped about the Arteza watercolor pens, if you have no experience (me) it's hard to manouver but the more I use them I love them more and more. The saturation it's so good plus the brush fit in the smallest shape you can find.
Thanks. Always interesting to learn different techniques. Not being an artist, I found it fascinating to watch you lift colour out and to hear about the different brushes.
Thanks for posting this miss :) I've bought Windsor & Newton watercolor brush markers and want to buy the Zig Kuretake Clean too as the W & N have very few colors
This must have been a lot of work for you but was well worth it - very interesting and informative. The results were great! When you have time, I would love to see a similar demonstration with water colours. I have never used them so it is really interesting to see the different effects and techniques. Thank you for your patient tutorial. That long brush was sooo relaxing zzzzz 😁
I came across your channel via a search for brush pens as I wanted something more convenient to use when urban sketching. It has helped me a lot, thanks. I have now subscribed. Incidentally, I was trying to place your accent and my wife reckons it is Teeside. We are in Northumberland. Jimmie ☔️
This video was perfect timing! My kuretake water colour brush pens just arrived today and I was wondering why they were so pigmented! Did not cross my mind to mix them with a bit of water 🙈 thank you!!
I've just bought these pens (clean Color) as I was so impressed with your tutorial. I was wondering how to store them, my Pitt pens have to be stored horizontal where as my ink of Stella pens have to be stored vertically. Which way should these be stored? Btw, I asked your advice on a beginners watercolour book and went ahead and bought one based on your recommendation and it's excellent, I've learnt a lot already and not even put paint on paper. Thank you for your help and I look forward to more videos from you!
Thank you for taking the time to give us this really informative video! I just recently got some watercolour brush pens and before I used them I wanted to see the best ways to use them. This video is so detailed and has helped me with everything I wanted to know!
Thank you for sharing these wonderful techniques. I think you are the best. you show everything so clearly and you explain it calmly and clearly. I have seen between you films that you have the neocolor 2 I would like to see some beautiful color techniques of it😍
Awesome job! Like wow! What an awesome job! I can't even explain how good you do this stuff. You drew these by learning how to do it and then you painted them kind of and colored them. I can't even explain how could you do this. And you say you're just learning. You do just an awesome job I just want to tell you that. I'm a newbie to Zig pens colored pencils you name it. I have some ziggs and I don't know how to use them really. So I come on TH-cam to see how other people use them. I've been at this less than a year but I remember when I got my first coloring book and everybody was giving me things for my birthday and it was just a hobby in the beginning because my husband passed away and everybody said it would be good if I got into the coloring and I would pass time away and not have my mind on my husband a lot. And I got angel coloring books mermaid coloring books I have everyone of Johanna basford books. And I love Ivy and the inky butterfly. I guess I need to read it to. LOL. I'm using other books first like Mandela's and other things like just I don't know how to explain the books I just I don't know a bunch of stuff put together. Like a kaleidoscope coloring. Things like that and different textures and tiles and things like that. But when I like to most is inside of houses. And outside. I don't have a lot of media stuff because I can't afford much. I think it's why my mother gave me sings to color and other things like that. She said I will get my life back it just takes time. Yeah he passed away less than a year ago of all things couple days after he passed away. It hasn't been easy and I'm still trying to learn. I can't afford books and a lot of media things, but I sure do love to see you and other people do it. You and there's few others that do an awesome job. Thank you so much for being on TH-cam you have truly inspired a lot of people and I am one of them. Thank you for showing us how to do this stuff because you never know. I have a set of I can't remember if it was 12 or 24 ziggs, I put them away until I could learn how to use them. I'm going to keep trying to learn to use them. You make it look so simple. You have truly inspired me so much of different things you do. Keep up the good work you truly are an artist. An artist is truly willing to learn and become good at it. I'm not there yet but maybe someday I will be. Keep up the good work and thank you very much for putting this out there all of us to see. I know you put it up a while ago I saw the date but it still helps us newbies. Thank you so much you're helping me keep my mind on other things. It does help it really does. Thank you again and have a wonderful day
Hi Debbie, I'm so sorry to hear about your husbands passing. I can only imagine what you must be going through right now. You must be heartbroken and I really feel for you. I'm glad to hear that I can play some small part in the recovery from your grief. Thank you so much for your lovely compliments about my videos and artwork. Creating art is an amazing thing and can help lots of people in lots of different ways and it's not necessary to have loads of different mediums to be able to enjoy creating art (including coloring). I do have quite a lot of different things but I wouldn't if I didn't make these art videos. The great thing about the zigs is that you can mix loads of colors from just a few colors so you don't need a large pack of them. Have a play around with mixing colors and you will find you can make loads more. I still need to read the story in Ivy and the Inky Butterfly too by the way, lol. 😁🎨😍👍
Wonderful Video. I am new to "brush pens", I use brushes with water and paint. Im trying to find the best pen-brush for me. Again, Wonderful Video. I appreciate the time and information You put into this brush pen tutorial.
Very informative video. Thank you for sharing the various tips and tricks you use. Loved the acorns and how you compared two different methods. I have both types of markers ..now I have to give it a try and see if I can accomplish something remotely close to what you did. :D Thanks again.
i used same technique and my paper began pilling almost instantly. I don't think I was overworking the paper at all. I used Canson Watercolor paper but I WAS on the rough side. Maybe I should be on the smoother side.. Thanks
Thank you so much for this super informative video. I have the Zigs and had a problem blending them on my watercolour paper and eventually had to use Strathmore Bristol Smooth. I prefer a textured paper and will try the Bockingford paper now, I think watercolour looks so much nicer on a textured paper. You have inspired me to get them out and play again!! Have subscribed to your channel and look forward to checking out your previous tutorials. TFS😊❤️
What a lovely video. I enjoyed watching you so much. I am just starting out with water color pens and wanted to ask which of the two brands you used would you buy if you could only buy one set to start out with? Thank you.
Probably the Zigs as they are more pigmented and I think they will last longer. I don't dislike the Arteza at all and would definitely buy them if budget was an issue but the Zigs are of higher quality.
Looking at brush pens as a better option for me because color pencils take too much strength and time. My hands and attention span wear out quickly. Thank you for an excellent demonstration.💖
Hi...I really enjoyed your video! I have been trying watercolor, but have not managed to get the technique right. This video explained a lot of what may have been my problems. I have both sets of these markers. I have the set of 24 in the zig. I read that would be all that I need. Do you know of that being the case? If I need additional colors, what are your go to colors in the zig markers. My arteza set is of 48. Thank you for sharing your time and talent.
Hi, thank you very much for your lovely comment. I really don't think you need all the colors available. I have not used them a lot to be honest with you. Because they are water soluble, you can easily mix more colors with the colors you have. This is much easier to do if you have some knowledge of color mixing. If I were to go back in time, I would not have bought the full 80 set. Also, I think you can purchase the Zigs separately so you could add more colors one at a time if you think you would like more colors.
Thank you so much for all your insight sharing regarding this real brushes. I really enjoyed it and learned something new. Although it was not your intention I see also a comparison of the two brands in here. I was tempted to buy the Arteza ones but to me it looked as if the Kuretake did better (pigmentwise and dried results) so I will rather add up to my existing Kuretakes than trying out the Arteza.
I just got 3 sets of Jane's Mermaids, and some inexpensive 20 set that reviewed very well on Ama for learning with. I love them but my first sketch was so over saturated in color! This video is so helpful. Thank you. I did buy the Tim Holz ink palette for keeping my inks unwasted, for 7.00 US, It will pay for itself over time.
What kind of black pen are you using that allows you to paint with water color over it? I was just using a plain Pilot G-2 pen (0.38, so pretty fine) and as soon as I bring water to it to blend out a color from the brush pens, it all just turns grey, leaching color out from the black pen :( I'm completely new to this - should I be using a different pen??? help please!!
Hi Kelsey, I cant remember the exact pen I used but it was probably a pigma micron fine liner as they are waterproof. There are tons of different ones available, you just need to make sure it says waterproof. Just search for waterproof fine liners online or if you go to an art shop, ask them to show you which ones are waterproof. Most pens will state on the side if it's waterproof or not. Just as a side note, if you are using alcohol markers, you need to look for alcohol proof fine liners as alcohol can still dissolve some waterproof ink. Hope that made sense 👍🎨
@@TheArtSpirits thank you so much for taking the time to explain! I am so excited to try this again with waterproof pens, especially after watching your video! Eeeeee!! ♡♡ This is going to be SO much fun ♡♡
It’s so disturbing that the Zig marker changed color so drastically with the addition of water. I guess this is why it’s important to test these things before working on an actual painting. Good lesson for me to learn. :) Thank you for doing this video!
I don't like that Arteza brush pens as watercolor pens the second you put it on the paper they dry to fast before you even get the water on to the paper ...and when you put the water on first then the pen gets clear you can't win with them. I like the zig one's hands down .. I even asked them to send me a sample to try and they refused to bc my bf purchased them for me so I guess they thought I was looking for something free lol that's a good one considering I spend a lot of money on painting products ... anyway, I'm glad that you posted this video thank you now I can see that I'm not the only one who gets those same results!
Would also like to see how you did the background. The piece is beautiful, so sad the fixative ruined it. You should also mention the name of the fixative so we can avoid buying it.
I bought Ivy and the Inky Butterfly and I have the Arteza water color pens . I see you are using these pens. The coloring book instructions say to use pencils and pens. The pages are very thick. Does it bleed through at all?
Hi Vinjulieann1, I primed the surface of the book with 2 layers of this Satin Glazing Fluid geni.us/yf1Zb it's a great base for any watercolor products. You could try and use the pens directly on the paper and it might not bleed through but you will find it really difficult to make nice blends as the paper just grabs the ink and then it won'tbudge. I've do have another video on this subject, here is the link if you would like to watch it th-cam.com/video/2Tnljg69BZc/w-d-xo.html
Hi , thank you for a video . What printing paper should I use ? I want to print the coloring images and color them with zig clean pens . I tried regular paper and I did not like the result . Thanks .
Hi, I used watercolor paper, Bockingford for these. It's a bit thick though so you would need a printer that takes thicker paper. Mind doesn't unfortunately, so I can't print on it myself. Here's a link to the watercolor paper geni.us/4kVyF
Thanks so much, i was thinking about getting these, also I wanted to get some color pencils I'm a beginner at colored pencils, I heard that were Castell was the best and others tell me to do Prisma color, do you have a video on these two or what do you recommend
Hi, I love both the Polychromos by Faber Castell and the Prismacolor Premier. They are both brilliant but they are different so it depends on your personal preference. The prismacolor are softer than the polychromos and they can be very easily blended together on the paper. They are pretty opaque so they will cover the lines if you are using them in coloring books. They also do drop those little bits of wax bloom which can be annoying. The polychromos are much more expensive, not as soft and they are more translucent. They are harder to blend on the paper but they layer well and this is how you get your color blend, by layering, as they are translucent so the underneath layers will show through. You don't get any wax bloom from these and the colors are very vibrant and saturated. I hope this helps you make a choice better. I do have a video comparing them that I made a while ago but please bare in mind that I know more about them now than I did when I mad the video. Here is a link if you would like to watch it. th-cam.com/video/e19IeWnHsdA/w-d-xo.html
The Art Spirits THANK U SO VERY MUCH FOR TAKING THE TIME TO EXPLAIN IN DETAIL FOR ME , I think I'm going to try the prismacolor first ,being I'm a beginner. I can always ask for a fabric Castell for my birthday if I feel I want to have something different thank you so much for all your wisdom. I pray your life is blessed
Hi, The Zigs are a bit more juicy and the colours seem more concentrated. The brush on the zig is much smaller and neater. The pen barrel seems better quality on the zigs too. Also, the zigs have some very pale tone colours but the Artezas doesn’t. That’s not a huge problem as you can use water to lighten the tone. Artezas are still good in my opinion but I do think the zigs are more superior.
Hi, I did draw them myself but I copied them from a couple of books. I think I listed the books in the video description. They are step by step drawing books.
Hi Keni, I wish I could, lol. I'm faced with that problem myself. Watercolor paper is too thick for most printers, unfortunately. There are printers out there that will print on thicker paper but mines not one of them. You could try and find out if your printer has a setting for thicker paper. My old printer from years ago used to have one and I could print on cardboard, but this one is just for thin paper only.
The Art Spirits hmm, just got a new printer, real good one, couple weeks ago, didn’t even think to check, if it doesn’t, I wonder how costly it would be to take to office supply/print shop. Anyway, thanks for reply Rebecca.
Darker colors don’t seem to be able to look that nice when you mix them with water after you paint, it’s like the streaks remain there...is that true or am I doing something wrong?
It really depends on what paper you are using, Carolina. Some papers really hold onto the colour and other papers are excellent for blending the colours without streaks. I've actually just uploaded a brand new video a couple of days ago and I'm giving some tips on what surface and paper works best. If you would like to have a look at it, here is the link th-cam.com/video/44mMcBRQDDc/w-d-xo.html

Do the watercolor pencils pigments match the watercolor pen brush pigments?
I was just about to give up on my brush pens - then I saw this. I can now use my brush pens with confidence. Thank you for a wonderful tutorial!
Same here!
I’m getting ready to use the brush pens I bought about three months ago but have been hesitating to start without seeing how it is done. Your demonstrations are beautiful and a a great help. Thank you very much for sharing your skill and knowledge.

I don't think they are, no.

Also, I think you can purchase the Zigs separately so you could add more colors one at a time if you think you would like more colors.
The Art Spirits OK...thanks for responding. I will continue trying. Thanks for your help also. 😊
Thanks for explaining about fixative, drips versus fine spray.
Great Demonstration, Thank You
Outstanding "How To"! Just what I need right now! Thanks!
I think u can say you ARE an expert😉
I love this video. I will be using this for a reference all the time! Thank you so much.
My favorite way to use brush marker is using the plastic board or the inside of a color pencil tin.
Very useful tips, Love your accent too :)
Very informative video :D
Ihave a question where do you buy your pencase for your zigs? :D
Wow, I have watched loads of watercolour brush pen tutorials. This is simply the best 👌 😊 x
Are you from Cumbria?
Hi, yes that could be annoying if you were expecting it to stay red. 🎨🙂
What is the satin glazing liquid for please that’s on your list
I don't like that Arteza brush pens as watercolor pens the second you put it on the paper they dry to fast before you even get the water on to the paper ...and when you put the water on first then the pen gets clear you can't win with them. I like the zig one's hands down .. I even asked them to send me a sample to try and they refused to bc my bf purchased them for me so I guess they thought I was looking for something free lol that's a good one considering I spend a lot of money on painting products ... anyway, I'm glad that you posted this video thank you now I can see that I'm not the only one who gets those same results!
I'm not really into shading or outlining i just like coloring .I'm wanting to start using watercolors .
Wonderful video. So informative. Thank you!
Thanks for the video. It was very informative. I learned a lot!!
Thank you for this in depth video!
Would also like to see how you did the background. The piece is beautiful, so sad the fixative ruined it. You should also mention the name of the fixative so we can avoid buying it.
Excellent tutorial 😀
Explained nicely
Learned sooo much. Thank you so much. 🙏
30:00 loved this technique
Wonderful tutorial. Thanks.
It's going to be a gift - I will buy the glazing fluid and will check the video - thank you ...
Thanks for this wonderful video . 😘💕
No problem at all. Thank you so much 😁🎨✏️
I know this is an old video, but how do the Arteza Brush pens compare to the Zigs?
Hi, The Zigs are a bit more juicy and the colours seem more concentrated. The brush on the zig is much smaller and neater. The pen barrel seems better quality on the zigs too. Also, the zigs have some very pale tone colours but the Artezas doesn’t. That’s not a huge problem as you can use water to lighten the tone. Artezas are still good in my opinion but I do think the zigs are more superior.
Excellent video, thanks.
Your work is lovely!
Very helpful..... thank you!
I love the dippng the brush pen in water technique to get a gradient.
TFS, very helpful ! :-)
Question. If those are not your drawings did you just print off a printer the image on to watercolor paper? Could I do this?
Hi, I did draw them myself but I copied them from a couple of books. I think I listed the books in the video description. They are step by step drawing books.
Can you refer a water color paper you can run through a printer? Thanks Rebecca.
Thank you for your help but , I need to find paper that my HP printer would take and since your printer does not , most likely my won't .
Some printers do take thicker paper. Mines a samsung lazer printer and only takes regular thin paper.
I am a bit late in the game 😅, but what a great helpful vid thanks from 2024 💖
Glad it was helpful! 😊
The Art Spirits thanks so much!
thank you
@6:54 I’m dying laughing. Love this video. Great tutorial. Liked and subbed. Everyone should do the same
Thankyou
If you emboss your image in Black it won't bleed.
