    Gorgeous work! I love the fish! How do you color a large area with brush markers? Like a birdhouse that you want to be one color without having all of the lines in it? Is it possible to get an over all smooth look to the color?

    • @CherTheFire
      @CherTheFire  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on what you mean by "large area". You can work in layers and build up to get the desired effect you are looking for. It is common to recommend multiple layers of the marker to smooth out the lines created, then move over a bit and repeat the layers. Also, don't let your marker sit on the paper or it will leave a pooled mark where it sat longer in contact with the paper. If you are using this technique from the video you can do a wash on the whole thing and layer on top of it with either marker or colored pencil (making sure the paper is dry). And I would also pose the question of - does the area in question need to be all perfectly one color? I found, for me, the more I sought perfection, like needing something to be absolutely the same, the easier it was to become frustrated with a project. When I let go and let thing evolve or other colors to play, I ended up with more interested results in the end. Hope that helps. Happy coloring!

    Do you have to use the Tombow blending palette or could you use a water color palette, a glazed ceramic tile or a piece of acrylic, packaging or sheet protector. I’ve got Tombow, Zig, Stampin Up, CTMH , etc markers and hav been trying to use the products i have instead of adding to my overflowing craft room. "........ I’ve been thinking of buying a set of Duherer water color pencils, but see from your tutorial that I ma be able to use my markers instead. It’s worth a try. I’m thinking that with your methods you use less water and have a better chance of color not bleeding to the back of the page. I’ll still use aprotective sheet under th project. Thanks a lot for the ideas!

    • @CherTheFire
      @CherTheFire  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      HI There! I meant to show the back of the paper - there's no bleed through with 110# card stock, surprisingly!! And you can see I added many layers, small amounts of water, but many layers. The paper does ripple up a bit, but that can always be flattened later if it really bothered me. Use what you have, play with your tools, explore, see how they work, what they can do, what changes, what stays the same. I'm thinking a ceramic tile might be a nice alternative! I was even thinking a strip of clear packing tape on some paper might work. BUT - if you use the first technique where you use the blending palette like a stamp on the paper, those may or may not give the same result (I don't know, I haven't tried). A sheet protector would be perfect - LOVE that idea!! I tell you, I use less marker when I use these techniques because I can dilute the level of intensity with water. Have fun! Enjoy!!!!

    I am use to creating digital art. Although I drew in pencil before that. Doing it by hand I find all these wonderful mediums available. Needless to say you have to learn the techniques with each medium. This is by far is the best creating background using a blender pallet and blender marker at least for me. Reason: In this particular image I would ask myself where do I put what color where? This technique does it for you blending the different colors. This way when coloring the image pretty much takes the guessing out. What a beautiful picture. Questions: When you print image or use a stamp what ink setting do you use draft or best ? and what color of black ink dark or lighter black or grays ? Your new friend in creativity, Joy and my canine friend Izzy.

    • @CherTheFire
      @CherTheFire  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      HI Izzy! When I do my original work I use technical pens, always black. I haven't used stamps for creation except for tiny ones as examples in a class, but stamps are not my usual (nor do I have any expertise on the ink used for stamps). I then scan them to save for my coloring books or for printing in the future. Everything is hand-drawn, I'm not experienced in digital art. This particular image was printed using my printer on heavy cardstock, printed in black, no reduction on the image outline (I did not make it softer, grey or reduce the impression of lines) because I wanted it to show up strongly on the video. I think I used regular print, but I may have printed it at "best". It's been a while since I printed it.
      For me, I think this has become one of my absolute favorite ways to work with color. I just love the unpredictability, the natural blending and the fluid content the color takes on. I love the control of working small or large depending on how detailed I want to get. And I love the color variations while maintaining the vibrancy.

    • @CherTheFire
      @CherTheFire  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

  • @valasafantastic1055
    @valasafantastic1055 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Very relaxing and great tips! I had figured out to palette colours and use a paintbrush but never thought to use that wet background technique. I tried it with a cut piece of acrylic tear away paint palette paper and it worked perfectly! I have found the wet water based marker techniques work best on mixed media, 100% cotton paper and watercolour paper. My bee paper company super deluxe mixed media and my strathmore 500 series 100% cotton work the best of the papers I have. But a few other of my papers work good and some won’t work. The paper makes a huge difference! Great video very inspiring.

    • @CherTheFire
      @CherTheFire  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, absolutely!! For those who are doing their own art, I would suggest to use, as you have mentioned, mixed media papers (the ones you mention are great). I was actually quite surprised at how well the 110# cardstock withstood the water based material in the amount of layers that I did. There was no bleed through on the back, (but there was a little bit of water buckling which could be smoothed out if I needed it to be). Thank you for making mention of those papers as suggestions for other viewers! Happy coloring! Happy art making!

    • @CherTheFire
      @CherTheFire  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Your welcome!! Any water soluble markers will create some variation, however the ones I play with the most are the Prismacolor Scholar water soluble markers and I vary that with a couple packages of TomBows. Start with what you have and go from there. Be a master of your own domain (rawr) and see what your tools can create. I have a ton of Crayola markers, but I haven't played with those yet. Another viewer suggested Staedtler markers, which I also have, but I haven't painted with them as of yet so I can't give a report on those.

    Thank you so much for these videos, recently I got into watercolor markers (real brush and also felt tips) and just love!! But really no idea how to make anything pretty happen, so appreciate your videos very much!! 💖 Anyway, have been using 32 lb. paper but the paper warps and pills terribly, before I've barely begun. [edit] haha just noticed you DID mention your 110 lb cardstock. I'd much rather use similar, since I'm printing out free coloring pages but I also have a lightbox for tracing if necessary. My printer manual says it can print on paper up to 60 lb without jamming -- what kind of printer do you use? Or how do you get your image on your cardstock?

    • @CherTheFire
      @CherTheFire  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there, yes, my printer prints well on heavy papers. I have an HP printer. Yes, paper that is thinner will not tolerate water, it will pill and deteriorate. It has to be a more sturdy paper for any wet mediums.

      I used to have an HP printer that specifically handled heavier paper but it is not longer being made. New models aren't built for the variety they used to be! Now you have to upgrade. Now I have an HP Envy Photo that can handle most cardstock, but "regular" cardstock is it's technical capacity, unfortunately.

      I haven't sealed my work, I just keep it away from water. I know that sounds snarky, but I try to keep any special work away from anything that could damage it. Just like I would with any other drawing or print or anything I deemed special.

      HI there - I just looked up a link for the kit I bought a while back from Tombow. It's like $6-$7 for the blender pen, mister, and blending palette. It's on a comment above. Here's a link: a.co/0YFVgxo

    Very cool techniques. Does this work with any brand of water based marker? I.e. Staedtler, crayola, etc. I have a ton of Staedtlers but I always hate using them because of the stroke marks but I love the intensity of the color.
    Also, are you using an ink jet printer or lazer?

    • @CherTheFire
      @CherTheFire  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Cynthia! Short answer - I vote for you to give it a try and see what happens! I have enjoyed the intensity I get with the Scholar markers (even though Tombow are more expensive, I don't find them to work for me the same way - totally a personal preference - TB are great markers, I just have a way that works for me right now .....it could change over time). I haven't tried my Crayola or Steadtler yet. Don't let stroke marks bother you from creating something cool (find a way to make it work, perhaps coloring on top of the marker or I do sweeping short strokes if I'm working with fine tip pens). I used a laser printer image on 110# white card stock.

      If you have an ink jet printer and you’re finding the ink on the printed out pic runs, buy a can of matte fixative{also called workable fixative} and spray your printed out picture-and let it dry-before you start coloring on your picture. It’s a fairly inexpensive fix, an $8 can of Krylon brand from Walmart has lasted more than 70 pictures for me.
      (Make sure you buy matte/workable fixative, that way you can color on top of it. Matte/workable fixative is also what I use to set my backgrounds that I’ve done out of pastels so I don’t smear them when I color. You can find the fixative at art or hobby stores in the painting department or in the craft section at Walmart, as well as at Amazon. I’m sure there are other places too.)

    Can all of your different techniques be used on wood? I have my own pyrography business and my customers ask for their crafts to be colored and I am trying to find the best way to do this because paint is not my favorite choice. Thank you in advance Cher.

      OH gosh, Philip, that is a great question...one I don't have an answer to. I suggest you get some wool you don't mind experimenting on and go through different techniques and see what best suits your work/style and medium. Hope you let me know what you discovered.

    if not making a blend, why would it be better to use the blender pen, than going straight to the paper w/the pen?

    • @CherTheFire
      @CherTheFire  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Lisa, great question. You absolutely can go straight to the paper if not blending. You don’t have to use a blender pen for any of it. You can use water and a brush if you need. If you want to do straight coloring, use the marker directly. The blender pen (as well as a bit of water on a brush) help to soften harsh lines, control the amount of intensity of applied color. And of course, allow for soft variations of one color going to the other.

  • @parsellart7805

    Do you have a home lazer printer? Lazer is oil based. Water colors will smear inkjet because their ink is also waterbased.

    • @CherTheFire
      @CherTheFire  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      AH, good question.....I believe mine is an inkjet printer because it uses ink and not toner which is typical for a laser. I haven't had any issues with bleed of the lines with my examples so far, nor with use of gel pens! But this is a good precautionary note for anyone to do a practice page before doing "The real thing" if they are going to be giving a gift!

    I don't have a blending pallet, would seran wrap of a pc. of cardboard work?

    • @CherTheFire
      @CherTheFire  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      HI Daryl, you could try it, but my guess is the push pull of a brush will make the plastic wrap loosen. I'd suggest some of the other idea some of the other viewers have listed: a sheet protector (found at an office supply store) is probably top of the list for me, and you could also try a piece of acrylic, a white tile square, packing tape on a piece of paper (watch for seams if you decide to do the first technique where you press it onto the paper). I bet you could even try a piece of foil, but if you can have a white background (or clear plastic on top of a white background) would be better for seeing the colors clearly. Create you own blending pallete and jump on in to some fun painting with these markers! Happy coloring!

    Never heard of a water marker! I've used alcohol based markers but this is new to me! Are you talking about color pencils?

    • @CherTheFire
      @CherTheFire  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      HI Rea - nope, not colored pencils and not water soluble pencils. These are water soluble markers. Tombow makes some, Prismacolor makes a brand called Scholar (that's what I used), also Crayola are water based. I've used alcohol based markers - those have different techniques. Maybe one day I'll do a video with those (they are cool too!). But I just really love the loose quality and degree of variation I can play with using a water soluble marker. Super fun!!!

    A waterbrush is another excellent tool to use with Tombow markers and then you dont need a separate water source.

    • @CherTheFire
      @CherTheFire  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      HI Regina - YES! I actually mention this in an upcoming video, but it isn't a tool I use (although I have at least 3) so it didn't even cross my mind when I made the video. If you like working with that as one of your tools, then yes, absolutely! Include it! I personally like the control of the amount of water I place on the tip of my brush, but that's just me. Happy coloring! Thanks for mentioning it!!!

    What sort of printer can print with waterproof ink

    • @CherTheFire
      @CherTheFire  ปีที่แล้ว

      Laser printers actually do a better job than inkjet printers from a quick Google search. There are waterproof inks and printers out there, but I don't have anything fancy (and have since upgraded my printer), so I'm guessing I had a laser printer when the video was made. Great question and attention to detail, Henrik.

    Can you do this with alcohol base markers as well

    • @CherTheFire
      @CherTheFire  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jesus, alcohol based markers work a bit differently and they absorb into the paper more readily, in my experience. But certainly they have blending and layering techniques- they just look a little differently than mixing with water.

    110 lb Cover Stock???

    • @CherTheFire
      @CherTheFire  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, cover stock. The office supply store listed it as card stock, so I used that for wording for newbies - but yes, cover stock for those who know cover stock - thank you!

    • @CherTheFire
      @CherTheFire  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess I should clarify....cover stock and card stock and text block paper can have the same pound in weight (ie 110# or 80#, 70# etc) but that does not mean that they all feel and work the same. An 80# text paper and an 80# cover stock will definitely feel different from each other. So card stock and cover stock will be similar to each other in that they are heavier & thicker than regular text paper, but depending on the manufacturer, card stock and cover stock may feel different. For our purposes here, I used the card stock from an office supply store, marked card stock...but for those who are familiar between the differences with paper, cover stock is an option.

    I love tomboy, but their blending palette is a bit of a rip off, it's a piece of plastic, or laminated paper (I'm not 100% sure which, and you could do your own, or use packaging or a tile , or a ceramic plate, or even a coated paper plate to get the same results, save your money here

    • @CherTheFire
      @CherTheFire  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, there are other commenters who came up with creative alternatives, like what you listed. I have no investment in the product, it’s just something I have around and therefore have access to it. But there are many other creative options. Just need a slick non porous surface and you’re good to go!

    just get alchahol markers, id rather use those and waste the backside than to create a subpar almost cheap looking illustration, people who have used water markers will get it, theirs this weird effect with them that make the texture of the paper come to the surface making it look no matter how good you are with them it will always have this cheap and unprofesional finish, and if im having to go throught the hasle of blending on seperate palet why would i just use my watercolours, i bought tombow waterbased markers to finish ilustrations without them bleeding but find that its just a waste of money, time and effort, becuase i thought they would be just as good as alchahol markers without the drawback of bleeding, nope when you have to go through some crappy hurdles just to get a desirable finish, i now just cover the other page with scrap ivory card stock and draw on that with alchahol markers so my OCD brain can sleep at night knowing im not letting pages go to waste. but if you do buy these thinking they a alchahol marker alternative think again, using these reminds me of those cheap felt tips you had as a kid, it doesnt matter what exspensive brand you use they all create this cheap haphazard effect on the paper, even smooth AF paper, i tried everything to make this work but then within a week sucked it up and went back to alchahol markers, its not just better but its less time consuming then this crap
