    Jeff is always the best, explaining the “whys” simply and clearly. But in this video (@ 13:35) he potentially saves us from a pat down and a night in the slammer. Perfect every time! 😉

      He should explain “why” you shouldn’t drywall a basement ceiling. Worst idea imaginable. I can’t count the number of time I opened my drop ceiling panels to run more electric, ethernet cable, coax for my Directv. Oh yeah I was also able to cut a union and a few 90’s to run a natural gas line for my grill. All of that out of the question if I would’ve drywalled my ceiling.

    Hello Jeff, Thank you for your time and effort to set up and shoot these "instructionals". Just kick ass for sure. Makes me want to jump in the trades. Not because it's "easy", but because it is just that fun to do all these jobs around a house. keep it going. I keep making repairs around our 55 year old house with each new video. Just wish I was twenty younger. Oh well, still might do it anyway! Cheers, PF.

    Trade secret: use a 4-1/8" hole saw to cut out your 4" pot light holes. It gives you the perfect size hole every time. Also, because larger diameter hole saws have a tendency to bind suddenly while cutting, run the drill slowly until the center bit is plunged in and the drywall is marked with a groove, then run the drill in reverse, high speed, to finish cutting through the drywall.

    My back is messed up by carrying 5/8 sheets of drywall up old historic buildings in Boston when I was young. My family owned a construction company in Boston and those old buildings we renovated didn’t have elevators. Ouch. Man, I was young and stupid back then. We used to manhandle the ceiling sheets. I watched one of your videos last week cause i had to sheetrock a bedroom. In the past i have cut out for boxes with a hand saw. I'm an electrician not a carpenter, yet. anyway i dug out a rotozip i've had for years and never used. went to Lowes and got a bit like you show. and went to cut out my first box. What a mess, holy cow am i glad my wife does the mudding. lol. 2nd one i missed altogether. anyway, no problem i'll have my wife watch your how to patch sheetrock video.

    For some reason I feel like using my impact gun and construction screws is more cost effective, but probably over the long long long run the nailer is cheaper to operate (nails much cheaper than screws I imagine). (But my impact gun is also cordless, oil-less and hose-less for $150 and doesn't need a compressor.)

    If your basement is 50% or more below ground, DON'T use a vaporbarrier, this will trap condensation and make the wood rot rather quickly. If you are uncertain if it is 50% or not, its better to not use vaporbarrier in your basement. also, insulating more than 50mm (2 inches for you imperialists) is not advised in basements, unless you got outside insulation. This is especially important in regions with big fluctuations in temperature through the year. Cheers from a norwegian carpenter :)

      I've lived in many cities across Canada and the US.
      I've come to the conclusion Textured walls are a US thing. No one textures walls up north!
      Imo it looks like shit but I guess if you need to hide crappy work, it's good for that.

    I've really been enjoying your videos and have learned a lot! One of the large projects my husband and I want to take on in our (1910) home is to finish the full basement to have a bit more space, but I dont want to spend a fortune on labor (especially after watching your videos where you said it wouldn't really increase our home value)and wanted to do most of the work myself.
    Anyway I gave you all this unnecessary info to ask if it's standard practice to hire a GC to come in and just help with the planning or if that would be be offensive to ask someone to do?

    • @slowfinger2
      @slowfinger2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is late, but that's a service I'm trying to offer. It's been on my business card since 2001. No takers yet. I usually get the job though. I don't think it's offensive but perhaps some GC's would not want liability for any advice. My idea was to help a home owner get started, show them a plan of action, and show them the pitfalls to avoid. Show them "how to", or set up the lines and levels, put up the first ledger, etc., and let them take over with my phone standing by, ready for problem solving.
      I am curious what people would pay for such a service. What standby services would you like from a GC? A skilled renovator is pretty much the same thing. The only thing that makes a contractor a general, is they hire and co-ordinate all the trades for the job. The GC may be skilled in only one trade, or none, sometimes all. They have a knack for putting the big picture together, handling accounts and various scheduling, and they "know" construction. Renovators have a knack for doing quality work over a wide range of trades, and also seeing the big picture. Ask a renovator for advice.

    very nice. I have a question. In the u.s flooding in basements can be a real issue as flood insurance coverage for basements is limited. Any suggestions for materials that are flood resistant? I see you used the vinyl planks so that definitely helps. What other options exist?

    • @REALITYRENOVISION
      @REALITYRENOVISION  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @kaleign
      @kaleign 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely do not use drywall in the basement if you anticipate ANY moisture issues. Drywall is made for ease of installation and fireproofing, but is extremely vulnerable to moisture. I had to tear out poorly thought out drywall in my basement upon moving in (prior residents induced a flooding issue that caused mold in the drywall).
      I see a water-permeable basement tile at greatmats, though I haven't had the chance to use it yet. I plan to use it for the flooring. As for the walls, do not use water vulnerable insulation -- no fiberglass or cellulose. I'm not a fan of closed cell foam or sheet foam, as they're flammable and release toxic fumes when burned. So, mineral wool is an option, as it does not soak up water or promote mold. I also plan to use waterproof tile panels as the walls of my basement and mini splits and/or energy recovery ventilation (ERV) for climate control.
      The key to recovery from temporary basement flooding is allowing everything to properly dry out. So water barriers are unhelpful in that scenario, as you'll need water permeability for water to flow and dry out. I have a dehumidifier running 24/7 in my basement to prevent mold. You may also think about yard drainage and exterior French drains to move water away from your house to mitigate moisture (this depends on the lay of the land and placement of utility lines).

    I’m think I’m gonna tackle my above the garage room, it’s not really big, but it would add a man cave. Would you help me get a materials list and a plan started?
