  • In this DIY home improvement video series, I’ll be finishing a basement step by step. This video will cover the basics of how to frame a basement wall. I’ll show you how to use a self leveling laser to mark out your wall locations. Then I’ll explain how to cut your top and bottom plates (sole plates). I’ll discuss how to estimate home many studs you need and how to cut your studs to the correct length. Then I’ll mark out the stud locations on the top and bottom plate and nail it all together with my framing nailer. Stick framing is the process of building a wall out of 2x4 lumber. Let me show you how to build a room in the basement!
I’ll be using Tapcon concrete anchors instead of a ramset. So, I’ll show you how to use Tapcon screws to secure your bottom plate and how to secure your top plate with a framing nailer and 16D galvanized nails.
Don’t forget to subscribe so you don't miss the rest of my videos in my “Finishing a Basement” series.

I saw another video where they built the wall on floor like you did but the bottom plate was furthest from the wall. They lifted the top of the wall up into position and tapped the bottom until level. They said it's a great way to avoid all those obstacles hanging lower than the floor joists. If you not done framing already it might be worth a try.

Possibly! Thanks for the tip. I probably wasn't thinking clear in the moment. Haha

What do you do if the floor is out more then 1/8 that you subtracted for the studs that you made smaller.

Just use some shims or just nail them to the floor joists. It's ok if there is a small gap above the top plate. Thanks for the comment!

Isn’t a 16d nail to big for the top plate? The I joist and 2x4 are 1.5 inches each so 3 inches total. And the 16d is 3.25. Doesn’t the nail stick out of the I joist unless you nailed dead center into the webbing, I’m no expert by my understanding Is not the shoot from bottom into webbing.
Great video i haven’t framed since helping my grandpa 20 years ago when i was 17 it was with old school 2x6. My house is I joist like your basement.

Yes, you're right, the nail would technically stick out a little occasionally. I wasn't too worried about that though. Thanks for the comment
