Jay (Now.... I've been a TesseracT fan since 2007) has that unique ability amongst "Djent" drummers to create tension, texture aaaaaaaaaand suspense - with no loss of satisfaction, without being heavy on the kick. Call me out but that is RARE talent. Thank you Andrew for giving time and attention to a modern great!

The tuning on those toms -- wow just ear candy - you can feel those low tones in your gut. Also, I love the juxtaposition of the cymbals, the metal clang that reverbs in the head and ears versus those deep tones. He is just supremely clean - you can hear every one of his hits. Also impressive is how rhythmically impressive his fills are; they just got so tightly into his groove and slay. Just so yummy. Brilliant ❤

My first time hearing TesseracT was when they opened for BTBAM maybe 10 years ago and I was gobsmacked at how good they sounded live. I've seen them with both singers (assuming they haven't changed again) and both are amazing live. Look for their "Live In The Lockdown" or "Of Matter (Live at Sphere Studios)" videos to see more of the band. Haha, look up anything, really. They are incredible.
If you're looking for another melodic or groovy prog band, check out The Contortionist. Huge shocker: I learned of them when they opened for BTBAM also. I'm very drumming stupid, but I like a lot of the folks you've covered in your reviews, so maybe it's a sign. Prog metal tends to not have slouches on any instruments. Keep up the fantastic content, sir!

Funny you say he can probably play all day, cause he streams on Twitch a few times a week! You should check out his streams, he'll play songs from other artists on top of TesseracT songs! Great reaction Andrew, glad you chose him!

I saw TesseracT quite a lot back around 2007 as I was a regular visitor to The Pitz in Milton Keynes. Abisola Obasanya was vocalist, before Daniel Tompkins' first stint, and the drumming was quite distinctive back then. The music was a little heavier and the stage poorly lit, but all through the set you could see a pair of arms constantly waving over the kit, keeping a huge array of cymbals dancing. I'm assuming it was Jay back then as I don't recall them ever changing drummers, but it could easily have been an octopus. I like watching his play through vids - very graceful movement. Good stuff.

    Hey there Andrew,
Your work is amazing and your praise and dedication to RUSH and the Professor- Neil Peart, truly means the world to me, possibly the biggest fan I personally know. I have a recommendation for you that Ive yet to see requested, to my surprise. Please react to Neil Peart- "Snakes and Arrows" tour drum solo!!! It shows you an incredible mix of amazing tom work, futuristic sounds from a mix of electronic mix kit, and a tribute to his inspiration- Buddy Rich. No, not the same tribute as on Frankfort solo. ALSO, craziest placement of a third snare Ive ever seen! Again, so thankful for you and the work you do to keep US die hard RUSH fans smiling and tearful all at the same time. RIP Neil and you are missed dearly! NOW, lets get it Rooney. 😁😁😁

Excellent, heard of the band before but not the drummer... every rock you seem to turn over reveals beasts man! There must be a cloning facility out there... it is great to see a nice slow exact technique also, his exactness looks so smooth but of course that is the optical illusion of work (and talent), I loved his cymbal sound variation, especially on the flicks and then when he was ringing out notes harder, thanks for this one.

I think part of the reason the drums are so melodic is because the guitarist Acle writes all the music, he programs the drums and then Jay puts a little of his flavour on it. I do remember Jay saying in an interview that because of the polyrhythmic nature of the music it doesn't leave much room for interpretation.

Jay is a phenomenal drummer and one of my favourites. The only downside to him is that acle (the lead guitarist) actually writes most of the drum parts on a computer and Jay has to learn how to transpose it to real drums. His groove and technique is still next level, but that bothered me a bit when I learned that. It also made me scared that drummers would one day be no longer needed for gigs.

Slight tangent about tone: In the quiet spots, I don't like the kick that much. If the whole album was like that, the esthetics would probably be different. With a softer attack on the kick and not so much emphasis on it. Granted, I haven't listened to the original. But it makes me think of guitar tones as well. Often in metal, clean tones, although pretty, won't be something you'd find in a blues, pop or other context. I'd personally like many different mixes and/or different instruments for different jobs on an album. Ex.: A machine-gun kick full of attack for fast and heavy passages. A fatter and more organic tone for other parts. Single coil guitars for clean and overdriven tones. Humbuckers for heavier distortion. If you look at an album as a thing (and I still do) you have lots of variation and depth that way. It is something I enjoy.

I was waiting so long for you to get to Jay and was almost going to enter my own request for him :) He is a fantastic drummer and can't wait for you to react to more of him. You should definitely check this one out - th-cam.com/video/j11HKHpJTCw/w-d-xo.html
