Something I heard once, and tried to take to heart with my music is, the reason to practice so much is to train your muscles to forget how to fail. Jay's playthrough has that natural, organic, maybe even carefree feel of a drummer so comfortable in the song that failure isn't even an option anymore. In the pocket, in the moment and from the heart as much as from the brain. I love watching this guy play!
To your point at 18:30, Tesseract has been one of my most listened to bands over the past 8 years, and I'd like to think I can play along to a lot of the rhythms, but with the limb independence, precision, and mind-bendy transitions, I want to burn my sticks too. I've been subscribed to his catalogue of drum lesson/modules, and with how well he breaks everything down for all levels and how his lessons build on themselves, it's no wonder he's so relaxed and fluid. All about that flow..
You absolutely have to see Jays Meinl video of Sacrifice. One of the most fluid inspiring songs I have ever heard and the sounds of his cymbals are phenomenal!
Check out Jay's Meinl playthrough of "Juno", it's worth it just for "the fill" he throws in towards the end (that isn't in the studio version), you'll know it when you hear/see it!
Jeez those fills and the way he transitions is so mindblowing. People who say modern music lacks soul really just don't explore enough especially with drummers like Jay around.
Never forget what the great Neil Peart said: "Other musicians might hear something great that would make them want to give up. For me, it was always, 'Oh, I want to go practise.'"
Hope you can make a short one where you play the majestic groove from around 13:53 minutes. And by tge way yes still waiting for an interview with the mighty drummer and also guitarplayer 66Samus!
I'm sure you know this by now, but mike was playing the portals version. Slightly different, it has dan instead of ashe, portals was a live concert done as a stream online where you would buy tickets like an in-person concert during covid. At that concert, Mike played. Jay is playing the original version from altered state, though with Ashe's vocal removed. This is why at some points you were slightly surprised at the differences
The most expensive part oh my kit are the Meinl Byzance cymbals, but I'm ok with this. They sound spectacular and respond well to various different techniques and approaches from jazzy to stoner doom.
@@mjstories7181 The drums on their first album, "One", and on their newest album, "War of Being", are actually recorded drums played by Jay. The drums on "Altered State", "Polaris" and "Sonder" were programmed by Acle Kahney due to constraints during the recording sessions.
3:37, not Jay but I think is about 95% exactly as the record is played. maybe different toms but the accents, snares, crashes are all set in stone. Which cymbal he hits I think is maybe a bit different.
I've already thumbs upped B4 it starts ,just watched the other clip , and Know this is going to kill . might go straight tov the original tho' for some reason they sound a bit better, want to hear your bit at the end tho ' so there we gooo, ! ! . ------ ooooh shit ! immediately , soo different energy just different stratosphere , this's gonna be FUN . After bit , NUP ! ,Not normal , I get the same Buzz watching SENRI they're different Animals than the rest of us the way they just "sit there" and Do It , Makes me go Ahh ! ! . sorry 'bout long winded what ever this was , but needs to be said .
Tesseract have a million times more "musicality", and Jay Postones has so much more style than Portnoy ever did. You literally can't get more stiff than Dream Theater.

Yup knows his stuff inside and out

Such a beautiful song
Jay is an absolute boss. So many great drummers out there right now. He is in the top tier. Genius.
Yup what a player

Jay Post-Owns!
HAHA! He owns it alright
Back again for another look and listen. By far, my favorite drummer. The work on the toms @05:40 is so tasty against the ambience of the guitars.
Jay is perfect choice for showcasing cymbals.
Agree!
if youre wanting something faster then alan cassidy is a master with cymbals too
Jeez those fills and the way he transitions is so mindblowing. People who say modern music lacks soul really just don't explore enough especially with drummers like Jay around.
You got to see "War Of Being" OMG!!!
The kick pattern in that one part is wild
You really do need to listen to Jay playing "Sacrafice" - it's super tasty.
I'll get there!
I think I like Jay's version a bit better, but then again, he wrote it. Mike still did a fantastic job covering it. Both super drunmers.
Both killed it!
Never forget what the great Neil Peart said: "Other musicians might hear something great that would make them want to give up. For me, it was always, 'Oh, I want to go practise.'"
That was an incredible reaction

This was looking so effortless and yet I was grabbing my stool throughout the video.

You know Andrew, I hear a solid eight or nine will carry you far in life.
That's what she..
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Heyo!
The craziest part of the Tesseract is many of their songs start off from programmed drums. Who thinks of rough drafts like this on the pc xdd?
Acle!
All of their albums so far have been programmed drums on the final release! Jay learns the parts afterwards and puts his own spin on them.

After Gavin Harrison, Jay is my favourite drummer when it comes to ghost notes execution.
Ge reminds me a lot of Ray hearn, smooth poly's ghosting across the board and a big ol' smile on his face making it look easy af.
Jay is just so fluid and groovy. Check out any other playthrough because they are all top tier
The kit sounds awesome 👌
Adored this double bill. Phenomenal
The instrumental version of this album is one of my favorites of all time.
Jay is the Keith Moon of Prog Metal/Djent ;) Hopefully with a longer lifespan! Absolute ledge.
this is so awesome!
He was bomb bro 🔥🔥🔥
Would be cool to see you cover one of jay's vids where he leaves the click track in the audio.
the way you mic drums and cymbals is entirely different if you don't have to make sonic space for other instruments, or are, featuring drums/cymbals.
i always think of nicko mcbrain as the happiest drummer but yes he seems to be having fun
3:37, not Jay but I think is about 95% exactly as the record is played. maybe different toms but the accents, snares, crashes are all set in stone. Which cymbal he hits I think is maybe a bit different.
He’s the best

Check out chris Owens if you havent already. Guys oretty technical. No triggere, sampling or tracking either.
Fuu that's she said 😂😂
Alien drummer...
Only way to explain this ability
Everything on all of their studio albums has been programmed drums, and Jay has done an excellent job of translating it to live performances.
10,12,13,16
Bryce Butler wins the happy drummer face of the century for sure.
Incredible drumming, world class, but why oh why the facial expressions ffs?! Surely he can play it without gurning?!
I don’t know… seems these new guys are trying too hard to be Portnoy from Images and Words.? They really can’t match the musicality 🤷🏼
Well that's just like... your opinion, man
@@1talianEngineer Not only his opinion, but absolutely wrong.

You Didn't T'ink That was Musical ? ? ,
Ohh, Sorry for ya , really .
Keep in mind that this version is missing all the vocals, which bring a lot harmonically.
