In this lesson, learn how to count and use the three most useful Polyrhythms in drumming.
NOTE: At 2:50 I'm playing the 3:2 polyrhythms between the pedal hat and kick, the 3:4 Poly is happening between the kick and right hand... oops!

3:4 Polyrhythm will always be “pass the goddamn butter” in my brain 😂
This is the best lesson on polyrhythms I've ever seen.
That groove in Exile has always sent me thru a loop. Thanks for the insight!
lmao i just noticed that some of the gospel chops fills that i've learned are actually 5:4 polyrhythms
Shhh..we don't talk about the odd metered polyrhythmic linear rudiments..🙃
Do you hace videos playing those kind of chops?
The feeling of the rhythm is truly one of the key factors to elevating your understanding. Well done Jay.
I love the idea of a 2 over 3 and 3 over 4 happening at the exact same time.
Pass the Goddamn Bells of Butter, Carol!
Thanks Jay, for breaking down my favourite section of Exile! I finally know what’s inside the hot dog 🌭 lol Brilliant lesson, man 🏆
I’ve never seen it charted out like that, but it makes perfect sense. That’s amazing, thank you for that!
I LOVE HOW THE SNARE SOUNDS OMG
I love when a great drummer is also a great teacher. You are definitely both. Thanks for this video!
Something I learned from an Adam Neely video: You can assign phrases to polyrhythms where the syllables line up with the overall polyrhythm.
3/4: Pass the goddamn butter
5/4: I’m looking for a home to buy
3/2: Doesn’t have a phrase, but it’s just Carol of the Bells. Everyone knows that song. 😅
Was at your concert in Helsinki, and was astounded by the combination of accuracy and groove in your drumming. Would definitely be interested in the drum lessons if I had that much money and time to spend on just one hobby 😅
Instant Subscribe. This broke it down so simply .. something that - conceptually sounds so intimidating, but on paper, is actually quite simple.
Explained in a clear fashion , great teacher !
Love the sneaky 5:4 polyrhythm at 3:52 instead of the 3:4 that, nice way to check we're paying attention like the good wee rhythm section we all are. I'm sure we all noticed that, right class?
Yeh that’s the second blooper in this vid that I’ve spotted since uploading it 😂
Must be one of the best polyrythm videos explanations for drummer on youtube. This is easy for jay, maybe he has a hard time playing straight 4/4 beats haaha
Would you believe, most TesseracT songs are 4/4 - we're just messing with odd-timed ostinatos 😎
The hollow was damn crazy song.
Thanks for this lesson. I have been teaching drums for 5 years, and I definitely learned something!
Wish I knew this stuff 35 years ago! Always wondered how drummers were able to play these things. Cheers for this great video.
Tremenda catedra...
Gracias Jay!
Oh, man! Why didn’t I find this channel earlier? This is GOOD stuff! No fuzz, just arrow straight to the point, with really simple and easy to follow directions and steps! Fantastic job sir!
I am a huge fan of this kind of stuff and use polyrhythms, ploymeters, meter shifts and modulations all the time. But I love watching how other people work with this and think about it. Sometimes I pick up stuff that unlocks or simplifies things I already do, or strive for. I of course know Tesseract already but did not catch that it was you in this video when I clicked on it! Instant sub, and definitely binge watching everything on your channel! Cheers!
I have so much respect for Mr Postones. He is so talented and inspiring. Thanks for all the great tracks you create!
Saw you at rock city in Nottingham recently and damn you were absolutely sick bro
Sick video, Jay. Love your music so much!
alien knowledge is shared. We always thank you Jay.
Cool grooves! Worth to mention Ray Hearne, with polyrhythms and general riff creations.
Love polyrhythms, it's my favorite thing.
I love the way Jay explains this concept 🤘🏽🤯
Thank you so much for this!! 🙏
Great lesson!
Thank you so much for sharing this
Dropping absolute gems! Thanks Jay!
I've been waiting for this lesson for ages!
Thanks for breaking this down for me 😊
Amazing vid well done.
love your content bro!
keep it up!
Sensacional 🎉🎉🎉
Very nice 👌
cheers boss!
Might I be bold as to say that, you sir feel like the ‘Nolly’ of drums.
That is meant as a great compliment!
Hearing polyrhythms applied as legit grooves is key!
next level way of teaching drums
For anyone who would like to hear a killer 5/4 drum beat, check out Kas$cade by Animals as Leaders if you haven't yet! The intro, up to about 0:30 into the song, demonstrates a 5/4 beat and some interesting fill ideas based around 16th notes with quintuplet accents. Super fun riff to play, too.
Great. That chart you had shown..why not have a download able chart for all 3 polyrhythms
best drummer
great
Tomas Haake approves this lesson
Makes my feet hurt just listening too it, but I really enjoyed this one, I got half way through the lesson until I was like Hugh!!! Anyways, thanks Jay...🤯😱🤘
the 5:4 example sounds like a Tool intro from a different universe
Pass the fucking butter 4:13
😂
Fantastic stuff dude! I don't suppose you'd be willing to share your Supperior Drummer 3 Preset you're using? It sounds awesome! Happy to pay for it too! :D
On the 3 over 4, just remember Justin Chancellor from Tool's phrase: Pass the god damn butter!
Was coined way before him but okay
@@ouie-fl4qo Ok bro. Maybe I heard it from him first?
That’s literally how I learned it too 😂
Can you make a video on how to play triplets using heel toe, been trying for months and cant figure it out, 16th notes are fine, just can't play triplets
Does it take people a while to learn these?
MESHUGGAH!!!!!!!!
7 | 11 groove in album 6?
привет!
Ooofffff
Oh so THAT's how you play Hollow
Lovely lesson Jay....
However at 2:50 it's 3:4, not 2:3...
I thought I was tripping, yeah it definitely is a 3:4. Everyone makes mistakes and that's fine. Another 2:3 would be in Phoenix between hi-hat and ride/china
You're absolutely correct - the 3:2 happens between the pedal hat and kick... oops! I'll add a disclaimer
No problem man. Great lesson though! Like everything else you do:)
Its very usefull. Thank best drummer in the world 🫂
hi Jay! thanks for the content. one question - what about 3 over 5 do you use this pattern, maybe have some exfmples and how to? )
