  • This week, Captain Q gets to climb aboard a very special yacht - a 1970 Hinckley Bermuda 40 with a history and story that is unparalleled. Its condition is remarkable and it also happens to be one of the best prices on the market, currently listed at $89,500.
    You can't believe all the places this special sailboat has been.... especially given its remarkable condition. Does this sailboat get the highest Captain Q rating yet?

    My family used to visit Maine and Mount Desert Island quite often. The Hinckley yard was a mythical place on the beautiful Island. The B40, as a young child, clearly a special boat. Truly an example of perfection. Glad you were able to feature thus boat, despite never owning one, seeing it nonetheless brings back fond memories from those trips. A jewel.

    Well, the B40 is the phantasy (edit: should read "fantasy") sailboat that we draw, or try to. A shame they no longer build sailboats, but business is business. One thing I have heard about Hinkley boats is a lack of tankage, true? Also, could you interview the owners, of this boat in particular, for a future vlog? Love, the channel (love it) by the way, great camera and mic work, very enjoyable.

    Love your videos! Good boat picks, especially this one. Bill Tripp, Jr., would be 100 years old this year. He was killed in a car crash 50 years ago next year when he was 51. He was one of the greatest yacht designers of all time. His son, Bill Tripp, III, designed the Bermuda 50 for Hinkley a few years ago. Good luck finding one of those for less than $1.5 million.

    I grew up sailing on my dads 36' Hinkley yawl, I'm not sure of the year but she was all wooden, and had a built on centerboard and a tiller. When she was based on the Great Lakes her owner was a fabulous racing skipper, and she had many trophies and wins (Mackinac?). After dad bought her in about 1965, we sailed the waters off Southern California for many years, and when racing (?) her handicap was so high she won several races. Great memories.

    It's nagging when you see a beautiful boat that you can't put a name on, like from a movie, or in this case a series (The Terminal List). It had the lines of a Hinckley but the superstructure doesn't fit -until i've seen the picture here (1:16). Looking at the model lineup that's not the Pilot, so which is it?

    • @YachtHunters
      @YachtHunters  ปีที่แล้ว

      The guesses were Pilot, Sou’wester and Bermuda 40… so it seems like you were asking about the Sou’wester?

    • @blucas1444
      @blucas1444 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@YachtHunters Thank you for the reply, but as far as I can see none of those models seem to fit the picture at the 1:16 mark. It is a very similar hull but either the wood-sided cabin top or the porthole model (all 4 rectangle portholes with two of them forward of the mast) doesn't show up on those models. The SOU'WESTER SR. 38 does come closest, but that's a yawl instead of a sloop like the one in the picture. Maybe if there was a sloop version the mast would sit slightly more aft and then everything fits with the picture. or maybe it's not a Hinckley in name, but something closely related?

    So my dream has been to learn how to sail and have a live aboard sailboat but I want something that I can really use to go anywhere in the world. This definitely looks like one of those boats. My question is how stupid is it for somebody to buy a sailboat and learn how to Sail that specific boat. I think at this in a way of motorcycles everybody says don’t start on 1000 cc bike start on a small bike. I would invite any comments or thoughts.

      Great comparison to a 1000cc bike. You can do that and many people do… it all depends on your comfort level and confidence. We often tell people to start on something smaller to learn the basics as all the same principles apply… it also has smaller forces and needs less crew if the first boat is on the smaller side. You can certainly go out and buy and succeed with a larger world cruiser… but maybe easier and more enjoyable to start with something more modest and manageable

    No refrigeration, no generator, or water maker , it would be a good live aboard.

    Lately I have been watching "Chasing Lattitudes" channel.
    If you are not familiar with it, it is a very well done, informative channel, but, I think it is best described as the anti-CQ channel.
    The owner of the channel is very practical. He has a formula for buying budget sailboats. This formula is no more than 20 years old and NEVER, EVER buy a boat with big overhangs.
    His rationale is that you pay for total length, but you use waterline length. He says this is dumb and perhaps he is right. It makes no economic sense to pay for 40 ft but only use 28 ft.
    As I watched this review of this prime example of boat porn, I said to myself, "self, that dude is right. This thing is teeny-tiny inside. It is a terrible use of space."
    But then I said to that practical side of me, "who cares?", this thing is drop dead gorgeous and if you do decide you want to wander the southern ocean, would you rather do it in a fast, light, spacious Oceanis where I suspect you'd feel like you were inside a dryer or this gorgeous, cozy, heavy, rock solid masterpiece?
    Pretty sure I would be happier bringing along less stuff and being comfy.
    Not saying that that dude is wrong. He is right about everything he says and you'll be happier anchored in a cove or in a marina in the Bahamas, but if bluewater sailing is your thing and you don't need to bring along lots of stuff, there is nothing better than the B40.
