One of the local boat builders build mostly centerboard boats. Those boats had shallow draft fixed keels with significant centerboards for improved upwind performance. They also built almost all of their centerboards from bronze. When you lower a 7" bronze centerboard that weighs 1,000 kg that does help with righting moment even on a 42' boat. It is definitely possible to build an all ocean capable centerboard boat as our local builder demonstrated over and over.
Another local builder, now retired, built lifting keel boats. Those boats used the same keel casting as the fixed keel version of the same hull. The boats sailed beautifully but were more susceptible to grounding damage due to potential damage to the lifting mechanism and the interior keel trunk, not to mention that the boats were heavier than the fixed keel version. The advantage of the lifting keel was that it made the boat (26') easily trailerable. On the other hand the volume of the keel trunk and lifting mechanism significantly impacted interior space.
Another variant of the swing keel is the canting keel, but you will only find one of those on high end purpose built racing yachts.
My first boat was a trailerable swing keel boat. It sailed well, but I never trusted the keel locking mechanism to keep the keel down in the event of a knock down.

Buying a sail boat, never sailed but watching videos like this are a huge help in learning thank you got this my boat has a swing keel and listening to all these ppl saying how bad they are with no real explanation but this...amazing! I'm going to be inland and coastal so now I'm glad my chrysler c26 is a swing keel! Thank you ❤💯😁

One of the biggest advantages with a swing keel is when operating in shallower waters you can put the keel halfway down. If it drags pull it up some and be ready to move out of there.

Lee boards and dagger boards could fit in this video or a part 2. When you say swing keel I think of lee boards.

You should name names, e.g. Seaward 32RK, Southerly 42, etc. Great boats for FL and the Bahamas.

Thanks for this comprehensive explanation, much appreciated! However you mention a reduction in wetted surface with the swing keel up, I don’t think that’s correct. I think the wetted surface even increases because the part of the swingkeel that normally sits inside the hull will be exposed when the keel is in the up-position. Also I believe a boat will be slower with the swingkeel in the up position because the shape of the keel is optimised for the down position so it will create more drag in the the up position. Hope this helps 🙂

There is also the Jongert patented folding keel which performs like a fin keel but kan is made of two halves that kan be folded up on either side. Great for going by motor into shallow waters or if you run aground.

Very forgiving for small boats day sailing shallow waters like the Florida keys.... I was always afraid of running aground at speed and reacting by veering off causing the centerboard to pry open the bottom.... It never happened... Probably because it was such a light hull and was more likely to bounce the keel up and if we were just running over a channel hump, snap the cable when it fell back down.... We dragged our way back to the slip more than once given the unusual tides in the keys and shifting sand bottoms

Keysbare super shallow as you now know

Just a critique. You need some animations or videos of keels while you talk about these rather than stock footage of sailboats going round.

so, get a pair of bilge swing keels for that extra complexity.

Interesting. Since swing keels are more complex and require more attention, do certain manufacturers do a better job making them, more durabilty and better quality?

    "Shes a swinger baby yeeeeeeah"
Yep seems like the go, which boats have them?
Anything decently sized like a 473?

Sucks that bilge keels didn't work out

You made the distinction between centerboards, swing keels, and lifting keels. But there are two different kinds of swing keels. The weight-centerboard that retracts up into a trunk. And the kind that pivot up against the underside of the hull, but never fully retract into a trunk. You showed photos of both types, but didn’t mention the difference.

Hi, does anyone know how yachts like the pogo 30 or 36 are like for live 'a' board and cruising?? There sea kindliness ?? They have flat bottoms, I think.

      @tysonristau4995 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I’ve been aboard a pogo 30 and I wouldn’t want to live aboard them only for the reason that the floor wasn’t completely flat inside. A live aboard needs to be comfortable.
