Having owned a Cal 40 for about 10 years, yes they are FANTASTIC boats. This is a quote for Stan Honey one of the worlds best sailing navigators about the Cal 40, "they have NO bad habits". I can attest to that as I raced my Cal 40 single-handed to Hawaii in 2016, winning my division, won the First Displacement boat over 150 (rating), finished 5th boat for boat out of 24 boats. Only took 14 days and 4.75 hours. That rudder is an elliptical one desinged to the late and great Carl Schumacher. First off, I really enjoy this channel. After 45 years of sailing on other people's boats, I'm looking at buying my first sailboat. The info you provide is very helpful. An idea for a future episode, maybe when the snow is too deep to trudge through boatyards - the costs and considerations of trucking a non-trailer sailboat, maybe in the 27-40 foot range. There's so little information out on the web about this topic that isn't written by one of the trucking companies. I'm in CT, and while there are boats for sale in the area, other sailors are telling me the inventory is really low this fall/winter. Expanding the search beyond New England reveals a wider variety of boats and some great deals in the Great Lakes region, Lake Champlain, Virginia, even some smaller lakes in Tennessee and NC. Thanks!
don't be worried about trucking and their output ..decide on a boat , hire a surveyor, close the deal , order a tuck , boat yard loads it and your insurance and theirs covers it on interstate and its in your back yard before you know it
@Ed Kuryluk I've seen a TH-camr-trucker-business owner who specializes in transporting boats. He mentioned that he liked to get $10 per mile per lane. So if you had a 14-ft beam (2 lanes going down the highway), and you were hauling 1000-miles, that would be $20,000 (!) For a short haul, a trucker probably has a minimum fee. This trucker owned a variety of trailers. And he would hire the pilot cars himself.
Love your videos and humour, Captain! I subbed a while back and keep hoping you'll come across an 80's Halberg Rassey - maybe a 352?- to assess. Seems like a boat suited to the Maine waters. (ie cold water, sheltered cockpit, solid build) As they say, "Hope springs eternal!" Happy Holidays, and I look forward to what you'll discover in 2021.
Would love to crawl around a H-R at any time... really well-made and lovely to look at. It's high up on our wishlist... Happy holidays to you and yours!
This boat would easily cost 2 to 3 times in Texas. What a deal . I'm from Rhode Island and live in Texas and have seen great deals for sailboats in New England.
I just found out that my cascade 29 was designed Roberta A Smith who was formerly with sparkman and Steven's. The only boat of the same size that I like better is the Catalina 30. Mainly because it dosen't have a bolt on keel. But get this. My 29 foot cascade is only 8 foot 2 inches wide. It dosen't look weird at all. The reason is that they wanted it to be trailer able. I've heard that narrow boats point into the wind better. Wouldn't know because I have never been on a boat under sail. I grew up around tugboats and worked on them for 30 years. My boat is in remarkable shape for is age 47 years. The interior is mint. Just needs a haul out very badly and I'm a little worried about the cast iron keel. Cant wait to embrace the sport.
Love this Cal 40. Would like to own it. Live in the people’s republic of California currently. I suppose sailing it from the East coast isn’t out of the question. I do love to sail.
@@blacksand357 Coincidentally, I just sailed by Sequoia a couple of days ago. And although there hasn't been much information about Sequoia's racing plans, the boat is looking terrific.
Sooo, I must ask Captain Q...what is your ideal cruising sailboat, if you had to pick just 1...you are extremely knowledgeable and you guys make a great team, I myself find it enjoyable/therapy to go to boat yards and Marina's on the weekends looking at the beautiful yachts taking in all the craftsmanship and designs
Good question! that is the classic question . We may not even really know for the most part . but I have had my life time experience and I decided on the perfect boat in 1984 and though it now resides in the Mediterranean , i would take her back n a minute but my decision was molded by many miles at sea and the form that gave me the function i wanted and very important to me was her looks beautiful head turner deep se boat no matter where the sea ..I hope to do a segment that is more specific soon than you stay tuned
Can't wait to see that episode !...I'm sure a little back story on the Capt & his boat/s would be a hit with the followers, just looking at those suspender straps and Salmon Dockers tells me you have a story or two to tell lol, c'mon Ran-Day let's get the cameras rolling for this one !
Hi Captain Q.Please make sure that ladder will not slide.Giving me a heart attack. There is not much sailing here in Alberta Canada.Minus 30 degrees here today.Cheers.

I'm from Rhode Island and live in Texas and have seen great deals for sailboats in New England.
get your check book and surveyor out thank you
I just found out that my cascade 29 was designed Roberta A Smith who was formerly with sparkman and Steven's.
Another great video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
The youtube series “Great Old Boat” documents the professional and total rebuild of a Cal 40.
Fred Cooks series is the best be sure to watch but better buy a 40 first while you can find one : -)
if others are interested here's the link for this (outstanding) series : th-cam.com/video/TxHGM1B9aJc/w-d-xo.html
@@YachtHunters well, you know, Fred got the boat for "free". ;) But I do love this one.
That was an amazing restoration, loved the part where they turned the hull to keel side up.
Chebec 64
Can't wait to see that episode !...I'm sure a little back story on the Capt & his boat/s would be a hit with the followers, just looking at those suspender straps and Salmon Dockers tells me you have a story or two to tell lol, c'mon Ran-Day let's get the cameras rolling for this one !
Cool boat. Great starter for long runs. Does it need fixer money to sail to the Caribbean.?
Stan Honey and his wife are still crushing it on the racing circuit in their Cal 40.
That is sooooo cool love to hear it these "old school " boats have an amazing amount of life Clean bottom fresh canvas and have a ball
Boat was in great shape
Great value boat. Looks fun.
It really is!
Great video.
Glad you enjoyed it
Hi Captain Q.Please make sure that ladder will not slide.Giving me a heart attack.
There is not much sailing here in Alberta Canada.Minus 30 degrees here today.Cheers.
Thank you... yes, we make sure to tie off all of our ladders and send Ran-day up as our canary in the coal mine. Safety is paramount... much appreciated. Stay warm - that requires some serious sweaters
My Favorite boat C40
