    The boat is a great foundation for someone to build on and have adventures. It has a good solid hull(The owner the only boat owner I know who turns the bilge pump off when he leaves the boat), a Perkins diesel with about 1500 hours(ugly on the outside but starts every time)and a ketch rig. The sails are in pretty good shape, and it has a full enclosure. As with any boat 37 years old it needs some things, and I would suggest getting a survey to get an idea of what those may be. I have sailed and worked on this boat with the owner and know some of the things I would do if I were to buy it.
    The biggest issue for me would be replacing the fuel tanks. One has failed, and to me that means the other is not far behind. It has two 75 gallon tanks which is quite a bit of fuel for this size boat. I would replace both with 50 gallon poly tanks.
    Second issue is electronics. It has a small gps/chart plotter, depth gauge and VHF. I would suggest a package to include a bigger chart plotter, better depth gauge, radar, ais receiver, and either autopilot or wind vane.
    Third, it is due for a bottom paint job. And forth, if I was doing any more than sailing it around here I would have the rigging thoroughly evaluated.
    Keep the comments coming! I apologize to Captain Q, I was off island and could not provision the Dinty Moore or the bubbly!

      Hey jim
      Thsnks for that great third party update. I think you hit the nail. It’s a terrific base I think as well

      What's a ballpark estimate on fuel tank replacement? Seems like it would make sense to have engine pulled and gone through, add a generator and repair/replace tanks all in one fell swoop.

    Such a great bargain. I'm watching a video series now about a couple who bought a fairly new $200,000 plus sailboat and are investing a small fortune getting it ready to sail across the Atlantic. Seems to me that buying something like this and investing the same amount on upgrades would have been a better idea. This has become my favorite TH-cam sailing channel.

    we spent the entire month of August (as pre teens / teens) on North Haven every year throughout 70’s... a local Lobsterman befriended us and he would take us out on his boat fishing and allowed us to help him with his traps. We learned so much about the lobster and fishing business. They were the best family vacations! RIP Mr Brown!

    Captain Q! I am pleasantly surprised that you reviewed and Irwin. I tend to think of you guys liking a little bit more well-built and classy boats so it was interesting to see in Irwin looked at. I wish it was an Irwin 37 as I have experience in those and could use that as some sort of metric to get an idea of how you see boats and use as a yardstick for all the other boats you look at. One of the things that I do like about the 37 is that it's a much smaller boat and easier to handle and they offer a center cockpit version which still gives you a twin head and twin cabin. Also I like the sunken Galley in the 37 although it is not great on Headroom you feel as though you are almost encapsulated by it so it's hard to fall when you're in the galley which means you can have hands-free as there's always something to put your hips against.

    I enjoyed your video. I did notice that on your map of Rockland and Vinalhaven, the island is spelled wrong. Vinalhaven is named after a person. I believe the name of a surveyor or petitioning agent or someone, if I remember my history of the island correctly. Not the stuff you put on your floor. You will notice on “Seas the Moment” it is spelled Vinalhaven. After summering there the past few years, and my wife her entire lifetime, one tends to notice these little things 😊, and felt obligated to point it out. Thanks for the fun video.

    Captain Q, can you please do a guide on sailboat headroom? It seems like headroom increases with hull length. I'm 6'4", so I'd need at least 6'5" headroom. What makes & sizes of boats have such headroom? Do catamarans offer more headroom? I'm looking to live on a boat, cruising, no racing. I also have a limited budget. Thanks!

    • @tinyb69
      @tinyb69 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As someone who spent most of my life being 6'7", and at 67 years old I'm down to just over 6'4", the only real advice that I can give you, especially reading your budget constraints, is, learn to duck.
      Older boats, usually have a lower cabin height compared to the newer designs with their higher coach roofs, and deeper soles. You're probably going to be looking at a minimum of 40' and probably closer to 50' to find something that you can stand up fully inside. And more than likely, that will just be in the salon, and maybe the galley. Plus topside, you're going to be dealing with that aptly named device called the BOOM.
      As for Cats, I have little experience with them, other than a few spirited rides over the years.
      My advice would be to find a good solid boat in your price range, and get out on the water. The joy that that brings will make having to duck your head seem like a small sacrifice in the big picture.

    I just love your channel, I learned more here in a short while about sailing boats than any other channel on the web!
    I love this boat and also the Cal 40. I like fast cruiser/racers and would like to ask a question or 2 please. You mentioned that you will spend the money on upgraded "racing" sails for this boat. Any calculated guess on the achievable top speed it will get? I know it will probably be a bit of guess.
    And I would like to know which other old sailboats is also worth looking at that's quite fast. I would like to buy a boat that can do 10+ knots if possible.

    • @YachtHunters
      @YachtHunters  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Cal 40s were known to plane going downwind and hit 13kts but that was something of an outlier. Also, you'll have to have a savvy crew to handle downwind spinnakers while planing a displacement boat. Typically, a displacement boat is going to have a hull speed commensurate with the waterline length (LWL). The formula is 1.35 X the square root of the waterline length (in feet). A 40' waterline length will have a hull speed of roughly 8.5kts... using this formula you'd need a 55' waterline length displacement boat in order to get a hull speed of 10kts. Now, you can get a boat to go above it's hull speed with larger, custom sails (increase the roach of the sail like we did on my PB) and friendly wind conditions. With the PB (52 feet with 37 LWL) we did hit 10 and even close to 11kts on occasion but it was quite rare.
      Other sailboats that are speed demons are those former racing types - Cals, C&C, Swan, Baltic, Frers, and I'm sure many others that I'm forgetting. hope this helps

      Since the total sail area is divided between multiple sail, the sails are smaller making them easier to raise (less weight to raise a smaller sail)
      You can also run downwind easily running "wing on wing".

    I have a good friend who owned an Irwin 31, his second boat. We raced the heck out of that boat and did very well. She was quite tendah; however. I once helmed her downwind under her big kite, she was a masthead rig. We were in a race near the mouth of Buzzards Bay in the usual 6-8 ft breaking seas common in the traditional “afternoon hurricane”. I nevah worked the helm that hahd to keep that boat under the spinnaker to avoid a death roll. On that run I offered up to helm to any takahs including the skippah - there were none.
