    This bullshit about taking AA batteries being a negative needs to stop. Since when was using non proprietary things bad? When that DS4 battery goes dead your stuck buying knock off ebay units to replace it (plus the 6 hours of life you get out of it when the battery is new and healthy) meanwhile with regular old AA you can pop right on amazon, get some Eneloop and a charger and be set.

    I've used the PS4, X360, X1 and Steam controller on my PC, and I have grown to love the Steam controller. I had a really tough learning curve with it (which is definitely a flaw), but once I figured out how to integrate gyro controls, it has become my go-to controller. I'd really recommend tying gyro to left trigger ADS in shooters, or on to the right touch pad if vehicles are involved (left trigger is usually the brakes).

    Best pads:
    Fighting games: Any arcade stick, such as the Hori RAP (except for Netherrealm Games fighting games. Those are best with the dualshock 4)
    Racing games: Xbox One Elite or Razer Wolverine Controller, or a racing wheel setup
    RPG / 2D Platformers: 8bitduo SN30 Pro
    Old school racing games (specifically those in the need for speed most wanted 2005 era): Dualshock 2 or Xbox 360 Controller
    Shooting games: Mouse and Keyboard

    Steam Controller all the way. I just suck with analog sticks, and I was always a PC gamer growing up, even in the 90s. So, the trackpads are far more intuitive to me than any controller has been yet.

    • @stankostankochunt5837
      @stankostankochunt5837 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The trackpad isn't the problem with it imo. It's more the shape that's quite annoying - a bit too large and bulky

  • @JoshuaBirnholz

    Surprisingly, one of my favorite PC controllers is the Wii U Pro Controller. With a compatible bluetooth adapter and the WiinUSoft drivers, you can use the Wii U Pro Controller on PC. It's extremely comfortable, not too heavy, and has an astounding 80 hours of battery life on a single charge. Its excellent d-pad is great for playing platformers like Shovel Knight on PC.
    It only communicates over Bluetooth, though (the Mini USB port is just for charging) and it lacks analog triggers, though I personally haven't found either of things to be issues in any of the games I've played with it.

    Steam Controller Master Race! Seriously its amazing! You need to spend more then a week and set up some custom layouts, you didn't even mention the gyro or anything about remapping. And the bit about having to jump through hoops to get nonSteam games to work is just user error. I use my Steam controller for every game on my computer, doesn't mater if its a Origan or Uplay game you just add it to your Steam library... I guess old people just like plug and play, I like being able to do what I want and make it my own. You can buy 3 Steam controllers for the price of the elite and you get a wireless dongle with every steam controller.

    Wii U Pro controller is my controller of choice for PC. It uses a Bluetooth connection, it has 80 hours of battery life, it works with everything my 360 controller works with, its d-pad and face buttons feel fantastic and work extremely well, the shell is the perfect size for me and is extremely comfortable, analog placement is different but also adds to the comfort, pressing the shoulder buttons doesn't put any strain on the hand at all, and while the rubber on the analogs isn't concave, my fingers don't slip and the rubber doesn't break, wear quickly, or hurt my thumb after repeated use.
    The downside is the triggers aren't analog and while the rubber on the analogs is great, the analogs themselves have a bit of a dead zone and don't feel as tight as either the 360's analogs or the dual shock 4's analogs.
    If you're looking to use a controller for racing games, you're probably better off getting something different with actual analog triggers but for games you'd want to use a dpad and face buttons with, such as fighters and platformers, you'd be hard pressed to find a better suited controller.

      @dinoseen3226 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      munky cheez Yeah, main reason I'm interested in it is because it's the best design for twinstick shooters, Isaac included. Better than any other. Really good for certain uses (if you're going to have multiple controllers, it should be one of them) but extremely poor for general use due to the lack of analog triggers. So many games require that feature, and you're SOL if you're using the wii u pro controller. Only change or addition I would make would be an extra button near start/select, so I can spam reset on Isaac without moving my arm to the keyboard. Pretty sure there are wireless buttons you can just stick onto things (unbox therapy did a video, "add buttons to your phone" or something like that), so luckily that's an easy change to make.

    Richard, If you want a more accurate number for the introduced latency from DS4Windows and InputMapper, go into Windows' game controller settings and compare the properties output from the "Wireless Controller" that is the DS4 against the output for the emulated 360 pad. Any latency will show up between the two without having to eyeball results in a game which can be inaccurate as different controllers have differing points of tactile feedback relative to the actual button press. Higher refresh rates on the monitor used will decrease the margin of error when measuring.

  • @DaveSimonH
    @DaveSimonH 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm happy enough with my wired 360 pad, most games basically have plug+play functionality and the ones that don't I can usually create an Xpadder profile for. It's a preference thing, but I have always preferred the analogue stick placement on the 360 pad. Guess it started with the Dreamcast, then Gamecube, Xbox & 360. Years of playing in that stick configuration, so while I can play with dual shock controllers, I certainly feel clumsier with it.
    "But M+Kb is objectively better!", for some stuff of course, but a lot of titles suit having analogue movement. Personally my PC is hooked up to my bedroom TV so playing via controller is more comfortable, and helps with avoiding wrist pain/RSI I've experienced in the past with mouse.

What I'd be interested in, is if the PS4 controller also exhibits this input lag when used with the PS4 and if it exists in both wireless and wired mode. I'd love a video about input lag in input devices. Anyway, thanks for this video and keep up the good work. Chris

    About the DS4 input lag. Did you test it in bluetooth or wired? Or it has input lag no matter the connection?

    • @RockerMarcee96
      @RockerMarcee96 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has input lag no matter how you do it because of the third party software processing. I have played DS with an older logitech controller that doesn't have xinput support and damn now I go back into it those 3 frame lag that I had (I used x360ce) is really noticable right now that I don't have with the Xbox One S controller. Also if using it wireless it again adds 1-3 frames of input lag which is ridiculous with precision gaming, with the DS4 you can get 6 less of the s compared to a wired xinput controller.

    • @odysseyyy5550
      @odysseyyy5550 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm still using my old SIXAXIS controller that came with my PS3 back then when it didn't even have a rumble feature. It still works really well, the battery life is good and with a little open source 3rd party tool (ScpToolkit) it works extremely well via bluetooth and mini USB. Literally the only problem I can think of is that because ScpToolkit installs it as an Xinput controller I get Xbox button prompts. It took me a while to remember where the A, B, X and Y buttons are on the X360 controller, but now with some experience it feels just as natural.

  • @marioysikax

    Also it's good to mention that if you do happen to own Wii U and had to buy Pro Controller (either for multiplayer or as it's better with some games which doesn't use gamepads extras like Bayonetta), then buying Mayflash adapter might be good investment.
    As letters differ a bit, it might be bit confusing, but dongle does allow to change modes between same placing and same lettering schemes. It also allows DirectInput so it works with PS3, not entirely sure does the XInput mode work on 360.

    Would it be possible to have an analysis on input latency, deadzones and other similar factors per controller? I've not seen this before and I would be very interested, I know that this would probably be a very difficult analysis to carry out nonetheless but it'd be interesting what the staff at D.F. could think of and work out.
    Also the PS4 pad works natively on DInput, could you test the latency of the controller inputs on it? Also could you try alternative 3rd party XInput drivers for the DS4 controller? For instance SCP based XInput wrapper and DS4Windows are 2 very popular alternatives.

  • @muizzsiddique
    @muizzsiddique 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    For me, PlayStation 4 controller and Steam's native controller support.
    A few problems though:
    - Every program you intend on using Xinput with have to be booted from Steam.
    - If Steam can't provide its overlay over the application you are stuck relying on the Steam controller desktop configuration, meaning you need to have an Action Set with Xinput controls (which isn't very easy to do, or explain).
    - If a game can only have exclusive control from one input device you cannot mix and match KB/M and Xinput controls, which mixing and matching is pretty awesome.

    I left myself one PS3 Sixaxis controller after selling my PS3. It used to disconnect itself if played with cable. However I bought a cheap bluetooth adapter and I have very light good quality controller which is wireless. I could not ask for more! I do not need vibrations and new AAA games have built in Xbox controller support with button icons, Witcher 3 even has console map built in which is operated completely different from PC.
    I can see online a PS3 Dualshock controller for 15$ / euro, which I find very cheap. I guess because PS4 came to play, the PS3 controllers got cheaper also. With bluetooth adapter I think it is a very good budget option!

    Love the steam controller. People who buy it should be aware it has a pretty high learning curve for a gamepad. Dont expect to pick it up and play it straight away like an xbox controller. It takes configuration and time for your fingers to adjust to a completely new type of gamepad with the trackpads. For the first week or two, I was regretting my purchase and was ready to go back to the 360 pad. But eventually I found the trackpad settings I love for most games, Trackball On, Friction Medium, haptic feedback low/medium depending on the game. Gyro for FPS games is also a godsend. Its actually possible to play Battlefield 4 and other shooters and maintain a competitive score, after some time getting use to the controller of course. And what a joy it is to play games that have to controller support from the comfort of your couch. Playing some Pillars of Eternity while enjoying a hot cup of joe in the morning on my sofa is pretty great. Combined with Big Picture Mode on Steam, you get all the conveniences of consoles with the power and performance of a PC. Its fantastic! With a press of a button, an on screen keyboard can come up and you can type with the trackpads like you would texting on a phone, making browsing the web or using netflix app a breeze.
    Anyway, just wanted to give a few of my thoughts on that controller. I highly recommend it to any PC gamer that doesnt mind fiddling with a few settings.

    IMO the DS4 used through Inputmapper is the best PC controller. For massive upsides that you forgot to mention.
    -The ability to adjusting sensitivity and recalibrate the triggers, analog sticks, gyroscope, etc. Basically anything with gradual input.
    -Full on buttonmapping. You can even assign mouse and keyboard controls to it if you so desire. Eg mouse movement on right stick, WASD on left stick, LMB on right trigger etc for FPS. I like it to control VLC when watching a movie from the couch.
    -The touchpad. Not only can you use it as a mouse in Windows with left click, right click and scrolling, you can also use it for...
    -Macros! Double tap, click, swipe left, swipe right, swipe up and swipe down can all be used to create button combinations. In the Witcher 3 I put all my menu shortcuts on the touchpad.
    -Individual profiles for individual games with auto-detect.
    I'm sure the Xbox controllers also have software for this, but usually games already take up all the individual buttons, while the touchpad is free to do with whatever you want on the DS4. And there is the Xbox Elite controller, but you pay 2.5 as much for it.
    And I only have 1-1.5ms input delay through Bluetooth. Through USB cable it's ~4ms.

    This is the best PC controller video I watched! Great work.
    However, as I have watched several videos regarding PC controller, you never mentioned if the rumble/vibrate function works with these controllers. Do they? and how is it?

    We use the Zhidong V controller under linux (especially for emulators like dolphin), and can confirm it has analog for at least L2 and R2. they feel like buttons, but they're clearly analog.
