Silverback Gorilla Making Sure Ozala And Her Mum Behave

- Gorilla females Ozala and Biddy look like they have some kind of issue with each other and a closer look at Ozala does make you wonder if she might be pregnant?

Gorilla Ozala seems to have had some issues with her Mother all day. When Ozala comes up to Biddy, the grey lady still feels the tension. She gets up, walks past her daughter and lets her know she's not easily intimidated. Doesn't Biddy look just amazing? Biddy still keeps her eye on Ozala. Ozala moves in the other direction. I know some of you mention it before and ask if Ozala could be pregnant. I didn't think so as the staff told me she's on birth control, but that doesn't mean it's always effective. Looking at her now, I'm wondering myself. It is always difficult to tell, as Gorillas have bigger bellies because they have larger intestines than omnivores or carnivores in order to digest the high volume of fibrous vegetation that they eat everyday. It is probably just wishful thinking and the imagination is running wild on that thought..... Lope, Shufai and a baby brother or sister ....... chaos would be a sure thing lol. It would be nice to have a baby in the family, but they really haven't got the space at the moment and I think Lope would have to be moved quite quickly. So it would be a bittersweet situation, but anyway like I said it's probably just wishful thinking.
I think Oumbi was feeling the tension between the two females and he came and sat in the middle of the two. Biddy walked off and some close-up of Ozala enjoying her food.
The current gorilla family at Twycross consists of 6 members, which are Oumbi, Ozala, Biddy, Asante, Lope and Shufai
Oumbi ( 30 June 1992) Sons : Okanda 17 Apr 2011 born at Twycross Zoo, Hand raised and now at München Hellabrunn Germany. ( Videos of the family in Munich: • Münchner Tierpark Hell... )
Lope ( 3rd Jan 2013) and Shufai (24th Sep 2016) were both born at Twycross Zoo in England and they are still at the Zoo.
Ozala (19 Mar 1994), had four sons and one daughter. Ozala's first mate was Ti. Ozala and Ti had Matadi on the 25th of May 2003 at Twycross Zoo. Then they had their daughter Ndoki on the 3rd of May 2007, but she sadly died on the 29th Aug 2007, unknown cause.
Matadi is at the Antwerp Zoo in Belgium with his mate Mayani and they had a baby girl called Thandie. ( Don't miss the footage from Antwerp on this playlist: • Antwerpen Zoo Gorillas )
Matadi had another baby girl in June 2020 this time with Mambele and she's called Vizazi.
Ti died in 26 Feb 2007, the cause of it was a stroke. Oumbi got moved to Twycross Zoo in 2009 to mate with the females. Ozala was Oumbi chosen mate.
Asante (6th Jun 1985) is Ozalas half-sister. She hasn’t got any offspring.
Biddy is Ozala's Mum as she was born in the wild in 1973, there is no record of siblings or parents. Her offspring are Mambie and Ozala.

Biddy sure looked like she was itching for some confrontation. She had no reason to walk that closely past Ozala, and kept staring at her. Oumbi knew something was up and kept an eye on the ladies. Good silverback!
Biddy is the matriarch and is very old. She has to remind the others of this while she can.
@@Larecm Yes, there doesn't seem to be a "retired elder statesman/woman" type of position in the primate world, they have to maintain their rank at all times.
Oumbi's the grumpiest-looking silverback ever; nobody would want a scolding from him. Occasionally when I see one of those viral videos of a human brawl I think how cool it would be to have a silverback gorilla working security at places like airports and bars. No need to get physical at all; any quarrel would be settled with one look or warning grunt from the big guy. Peace would reign supreme.😆

@@mariehartje6781 she stopped, said she preferred to go when it is warmer. But visits to he channel had dropped a lot cause people went to see the D'jeeco family (at least that is what I thought). I hope she does start up again when it warms up. There are other channels that are sharing more Shabs for us.

One couldn't miss it, but fortunately Ozala did.
On reflection Ozala must be a very fertile female. Four sons and and one daughter before her mid-twenties is very productive. Perchance the birth-control is not as effective as it could be.
Ozala is like”Ok Mom! Calm down!”😂This is the exact same thing I used to say to my mom!

Silverback has got such a long haired coat. Very striking.
To: @bari2883- Indeed! Comes with age. When they first becoma a silverback one could be forgiven for thinking they had just come from the barber's.
They sport a very smooth close-cropped, almost crew-cut like, appearance and from then on their hair grows almost constantly till the end.
A little, generally, unknown fact, is that from the top of the arm to the elbow the hair grows down-over, but from the wrist to the elbow the hair grows up-over. That is why they always appear to have a mass of tussled hair around their elbows.

To: @GiselSimon - Hair on primates usually grows down-over but for a gorilla who is foraging in dense undergrowth and using the business end of his arms, that is from the elbow to the hand, it is likely counter-productive to have the hair facing the direction of movement, increasing the probability of entanglement.
@@petermoody6147 On mountain gorillas the coat is even thicker due to the colder climate they live in. The baby ones especially are SO freakin' adorable, like fuzzy black teddy bears, and usually a lot chubbier than lowland gorilla youngsters too. I remember when I was a kid first reading about Dian Fossey's mountain gorilla studies in National Geographic and wondering why these gorillas looked so different from the ones I'd seen in zoos. Eventually I figured out they're different subspecies. I wonder if captive lowland gorillas' coats get naturally thicker and denser if they're in colder climates, like the UK, in the same way cats and dogs grow "winter coats" if they're outside a lot.

Not to put a dampener on the expectations but I hope a little girl is on her way.
Should it not be the case then Ozala would not miss losing a few pounds before it, and herself, turn 'pear-shaped'.
Age comes to us all and even the 'big man' seems to be carrying a few pounds overweight.

Biddy is a beautiful female and I had always thought that Oumbi favored Biddy, could be the reason for their competitive behavior towards each other.
It's sad really, I've seen loving pictures of Biddy holding her baby daughter,Ozala.
To: @thesummerof1968 - Biddy was born in the wild so there are no pictures of her as a baby, but there is one in which she appears, taken as a two or three-year old, along side of her playmates, Eva and Diane.

I haven't seen any pictures of a baby Biddy.
Hi SV I think your observations are correct. I do hope that they get their new enclosure soon. If the guess work is true, then this growing family need more space NOW! I don't want to see the boys separated, at this stage, to be sent elsewhere with the only reason being no space. This family unit is just perfect as it is.

No update yet, unfortunately. The Orangutan enclosure was the first one to get an upgrade, but even that project hasn't started. The gorillas were supposed to get theirs after that. In the last months, they talked about just upgrading the outside of the gorillas for now, but that was supposed to happen in weeks and now it's months and not even the inside window has been repaired. So I really don't know what is going on. I see Zoos like Dudley Zoo building lots of new enclosures despite covid and Brexit hurdles and it is pretty frustrating not seeing any upgrades at Twycross.
@@SloggerVlogger Thanks SV for the update. Lope's family really do need more space now. I hope the lack of progress does not mean that they are planning to despatch some of the family members elsewhere. It would be so cruel to break up the family dynamics. It would fragment the family.♥️🦍♥️
