- First up Oumbi. The most handsome silverback gorilla. Disagree? Try telling him that 😁
He's the head of the family at Twycross Zoo. He was born on 30 June 1992. Did you know his birth name is Oumbie? Not sure if Twycross Zoo dropped the e, or if Howletts Wild Animal Park where he was born. You saw me a few times writing Oumbie and then going back to Oumbi. He spends his time mostly watching, eating and sleeping. He prefers the indoors as he spends roughly 80% of his time there and only comes out for food or the occasional snooze by the warm wall or by the hut. He is more of a hands-off father, he doesn't get involved much. In the early days when his sons were younger, sometimes you've got the feeling he wanted to be involved and he just stopped himself by reminding himself he's the boss he can't play. He has to watch to make sure everything is in order. He can get quite stroppy at times especially just before it's feeding time or when food is involved.
His mate is Ozala, the mother of the two boys Lope and Shufai. She loves her food and will do nearly anything for it, even steal it from others. However, she is a very good protective and caring mother. She was born on 19 Mar 1994 at Twycross Zoo.
Ozala and Oumbi are the parents of Lope and Shufai who are still with them as you can see in the video.
Lope, well what can I write about him. I think there is so much, I would be writing until next year. Lope has us all spellbound with his shenanigans and his naughty attitude. We love his swagger that makes us smile from ear to ear like when he walks upright (bipedal) which he has done since a young age. He does this comfortably and can walk up and down the slopes like that and across the whole enclosure. I have followed him since he was 3 years, 5 months, 14 days old :-) with the video "Cheeky Baby Gorilla Trolls Silverback Dad" he trolled his dad who kept pretty calm at his antics. It's been one of the greatest things, watching him growing up, growing up to be a blackback. He kept me on my toes, his upright walking swagger makes us laugh every time. We watched him terrorizing his baby brother when he was born and Ozala being a very protective Mother so Lope couldn't get close. That didn't stop Lope from trying, he just didn't give up. Now he and his brother have got a love-hate relationship. Lope is still terrorizing him, but Shufai grew up very quickly and now he is getting his own back on his big brother. If Lope can't terrorise his younger brother, he tries it with his mother. Who normally ignores him, but when it gets too much she isn't afraid of running after him and letting him know when he has gone too far. Lope was born at Twycross Zoo on the 3rd Jan 2013. His birth name was Elina.
Shufai Lope's younger brother was born on the 24th Sep 2016 at Twycross Zoo. His birth name Mijadala. He had to endure Lope's antics but grew stronger for it and now regularly gets his own back. He is the apprentice rascal and the best playmate Lope could have wished for. He got his own style but learned a lot from his big brother.
The brothers are the GoBros.
Next up. Ozala's mother and Lope's and Shufai's grandma. The silver lady called Biddy. Apart from her back, her right leg is almost all silver. She has got a droopy lip, which I assume is her older age. She is the only one who was born in the wild in December 1973. Nowadays gorillas aren't taken from the wild anymore. Zoos have changed a lot and are still changing for the better as we learn more about the animals.
Biddy has taken a shine to Oumbi and they have been doing the deed a few times. Biddy loves her grandsons. Even Lope who harassed her quite a few times. When it comes to it and Oumbi is in one of his moods and Ozala isn't at hand she is the one who steps in and saves the day. The video that always sticks out at me is Lope drumming on her head and she is giving him the up-and-down look.
Last but definitely not least is the beautiful lady Asante. She was hand raised and is quite timid and stays out of the way of the others most of the time. Asante and Ozala are half-sisters, they have the same dad. Asante was born on the 6th of June 1985 at Twycross Zoo. She hasn't got any offspring and blocks and runs away from all the attention she gets from Oumbi. Some records indicate her being called Asanti. In 1994 she spend about 6 months at Bristol Zoo, to mate, but she didn't get on with the silverback and was sent back to Twycross Zoo to her family. Lately, she seems to get on quite well with Shufai. Although she is quite shy, she sometimes sits in front of the window to watch the visitors. Occasionally she has a little outburst beating her chest vigorously. She loves sitting high up, enjoying her food when everyone else is inside.

That was great info for the people who didn't know them yet. Other troop sites should do the same for folks . I love Lope and his long torso and short legs, I think that is why he walks upright so often, and Biddy is my favorite silver fox who still likes some loving from Ouimbe from time to time...lol😉Oh, and Ozala's love for food reminds me our our beloved Genki😋

Just one little tiny problem, how would you get the food back again? Lope would be walking down the road never to be seen again and Ozala wouldn't stop until she ransacked the whole farmers market. 😂🤣
@@SloggerVlogger Clearly it was a flawed plan from the outset. I failed to consider Lope and Ozala wouldn't be helping me, they'd be helping themselves instead. Plus I'd be on the hook for the damages and be band for life! They'd have a big warning poster out front with a picture of Lope with his arms full and mouth stuff with lettuce, Ozala with a big haul and cucumbers gripped in her feet. I'd have a shocked look and be empty handed with total carnege all around! I am truly LMAO, good times SV 😁

Oumbi and Ozala are the perfect couple❤ Both are strong characters and good partners. Ozala realky hold her own around Oumbi. I don't see her strength in other females around the world in zoo's. I just love her. Puts Lope in his place with just a glance!! ❤❤

She was still nursing Shufai last year. That was probably the main reason that she was just not ready.

This was informative. Lope and Shufai's birth names threw me for a mega loop.... especially Lope's. I think for everyone concerned especially Lope he should forever be known as Lope the lovable rascal.. that birth name should never be uttered again.

Why the name changes?
Simply a zoo thing? It would make the keeping of records and the tracking of suitable partners seem unnecessarily more complicated.
I think it might be because they aren't sure about the gender when they are born and it takes a few month until they're able to find out.
