Silverback Oumbi And Gorilla Biddy - Can Gorillas Get Jealous?

- Oumbi the Silverback is the mate of Ozala. They’ve got their offspring Lope and Shufai with them at the Twycross Zoo.
It started all outside. When Gorilla Biddy the mother of Ozala was in the mood for some attention from Oumbi. You can tell by the behaviour of Biddy when she’s slapping her behind. Oumbi doesn’t take up on this offer at first and just storms past her.
When they’re all back inside, Oumbi shows off his muscles by chasing Asante away, as he’s not interested at all in her. He keeps charging through the inside of their enclosure. Then Biddy and Oumbi face each other. Shufai walking past, he knows something is up. Suddenly Oumbi hits the metal door and starts charging again. I’m surprised Shufai didn’t jump out of the way. He was quite calm and didn’t move that much. Oumbi now closer to the window and once more he slams his fist into the wall and charges again to the other side and another charge. Standing next to the window again, Lope his son comes close and starts sniffing carefully. Oumbi still very much on edge. Moving some wood wool, but ready to charge again. Lope still next to his dad.
I missed it when he started charging again and this time he did his business with Biddy in the far corner. It was really busy and I couldn’t move to avoid the bad glare from the window.
The last thing you need is your kids watching and poking you while you’re doing your stuff, but that’s what Lope is doing. He keeps poking Oumbi with his finger and Shufai is watching as well. When Lope moves in front of Oumbi’s head, the silverback gets up and all hell breaks loose. Lope is screaming as loud as he can and beating his chest. Shufai is screaming too. Then Lope chasing after his charging dad, still screaming which brings Ozala out from the back. Who starts screaming as well and going for her mum Biddy. Biddy in return goes for Ozala. Then Oumbi comes charging and he goes for Biddy, pins her down and then pushes her against the wall. Biddy tries to defend herself by pushing back and then chasing after Oumbi with Lope chasing after Oumbi as well. After that everything quiets down again, with everybody avoiding Oumbi for a while and by late afternoon all was forgotten again.
A day that started quite qualm and everybody just resting exhausted from the heat wave ended up to be quite a rough day. As you know Gorillas do mate with other females, which is natural, but Ozalas reaction does make me think, do gorillas get jealous? So many questions. Why did Lope think it was a good idea to poke his dad and started screaming and beat his chest. Why Biddy, she is about 46 and I'm not sure if she's still fertile. He tried avoiding Biddy at first , by just charging through the house. Did Oumbi really want to mate with Biddy or did he just do it because he feels it's his duty? I really don't know. What do you think?

@Jayne Eyre Ai just doesnt make it obvious like Nene so they wont connect. plus she can be seen standing up to Shabani and hitting him.
I too wondered if the children thought he was hurting Biddy. 🤔 Anyway, it seems interesting that lovable Lope is always right there before a fight breaks out. He never seems to be in the other room. Coincidence? I think not 😂

Lope was protecting Grandma Biddy, he thought Oumbi was hurting her. How brave is Lope to take on a massive silverback, he even beat his little chest at him. Lope is going to be a wonderful silverback one day, hopefully he will keep his fun personality. 🦍🇬🇧

Wow, I wonder if Lope was thinking that Oumbie might be hurting Grandma Biddy. I am surprised he also got away with being aggressive like that towards Oumbie 😮 but I guess Oumbie was a little disoriented when all hell was breaking loose like that. Ozala was certainly not pleased with Biddy's shenanigans. 😂

SV- You truly have a remarkable knack to film the best interactions. Wow! I can only imagine what we miss of these GREAT creatures in the wild. This was such an awesome video to see the whole clan taking on their role. Oumbi is one of the most impressive silverbacks I have ever seen. Lope seems fearless. Shufai seemed confused. The females got it straightened out. This family is a gift to us all. Thanks again for these amazing moments. Have a great weekend.

I love how they stop the fight and all walk away from each other before any one gets hurt. They are a lot wiser and smarter than we give them credit for 💕💕💕
Wow, Grandma Biddy still has it going on after all these years. Oumbi you animal. Lope is the best.
In the final of act Biddy wants to stop it and pulled out and Oumbi bit her (if you take a closer look).That is why the son tried to stop it and when the father broke, Lope acted so aggressively. He defended his grandmother.
And I think that Ozala just entered the room at the wrong time, she saw her mother rushing with her teeth out and thought that she attacked her children because they were so loud screaming. I don't think it was jealousy, because silverback can have many females and this is Ozala's mother. It was just a misunderstanding.

HeavenCEY Yes I think Ozala thought Grandma Biddy was threatening the children, think she would accept Oumbi having more wives so not jealous. In the wild the silverback can have lots of wives. Oumbi looked like he was smiling at the end. 🦍🇬🇧

In the wild, though, females in the troop are often very competitive with each other for the silverback's attention, and will cause conflict with the other females in order to get it. That suggests a bit of jealousy. After all, they are capable of feeling all the other emotions.....sadness, anger, affection/love.....why not jealousy?
It's worse than a soap opera, fast forwarded through a whole season! There's scandal, power, sex, jealousy, upset kids, and a dominant male lead, the magnificent Oumbi. Female gorillas are shameless when they want to mate, lol. Go, grandma Biddy. Get you groove on! I think Lope definitely thought Dad was hurting grandma, and that's why kept poking him, and then beat his chest at Dad so hard. He's going to be a fierce Silverback one day, bless his little heart.

Well thank you SloggerVlogger I was having trouble figuring what was what as usual but you explained it blow by blow. Last time I seen them quarrel was when Oumbie was trying to break up a fight between Ozala and Biddy, Oumbie shoved Biddy out the door and threw Ozala up in the air over a log. I thought she was done. Man that Qumbie is a mighty Silverback and quite a handsome brute. Whenever I see Gorillas mate if there are children they almost always beat the male for hurting mom or grandma? Thank you for sharing another wonderful video of these beautiful beings.

Very interesting movements from all sides. I think Shufai could feel the tension between his dad and Biddy. As if, Shufai is thinking, "don't do it, Dad". Same as Lope, the poking could mean, "why are you doing this in front of us"...lol. Not a funny scenario but definitely almost a skirmish within the family. Biddy and Ozala, wow...I wonder how long the memory will stay in Ozala's mind. I found all actions fascinating, historically. Thanks for your notes and video.
🤪🦍 drama. Blame it on the heat 😳. Maybe Lope and Shufia thought they were protecting Biddy from Obumi? Ozala had a right to be upset, Obumi carrying on with her Mum in front of the boys🙈. 😁 I don't think anybody was expecting anything like this :-) . Including me. They were all in the back most of the morning, so I didn't see a lot of them at first. When they were outside you saw that the heat was getting to them and everything was slow motion until it all kicked off. Oumbi certainly turned up the heat even more lol.

I think that Oumbi tried to get with Biddy, because it is his duty, as the dominate male of the pack. I do not think, that he cares for her, like he cares for Lope and Shufai's mother Ozala. Ozala was like, us humans(because their genetics match up like humans), she "was not having that!" Mom get yah own man! Stay away from mine! They are so fascinating! By the way, I love me some Lope, he do not care(meaning he takes risk, leaps of faith). He will take a drive on the wild side of life sometimes. Although, Shufai wasn't moving away or should I say, out of the way quick enough, Shufai was like, "What in the world......I don't have time for all this"......And, he moved slowly and slightly to the side. Like, "Y'all need to chill!" I am glad that all was forgiven! Biddy, I am keeping my eye on you, for Ozala!😎 LOL!

I doubt that Oumbi would have mated with Biddy out in the wild, but in a zoo environment things are different. As to the behavior of the others... well you know the old saying... “If papa ain’t happy ain’t nobody happy!” And of course we all know if Oumbi is raising Cain it only lasts until Ozala puts him in his place.

Of course they do. Happens all the time in the wild. Not necessarily over the sex from wut I've seen. But moreso over attention & proximity to the leader. The Silverback is reaposible for breaking up these squabbles & maintaining peace. This is the second instance of the Ozala/Biddy rivalry for attention that you've caught. The 1st time just ended w/ displaying from Ozala.

I watch a lot of gorllia families and by far this father doesn’t put up with any crap ! Some silverbacks more or less let a little fighting go on but this daddy doesn’t 👏
I'm pretty sure Oumbi wouldn't mate if he didn't feel like it.
He didn’t want to. But he knew if he didn’t hit it none of the Gorrillas would respect him so he took one for the team. Didn’t want to lose his Silverback card.
In a normal gorilla troop, the females would be unrelated. Oumbi doesn't view Biddy as a "mother-in-law", she's simply another female to him. And yes, females can and do get......competitive with other females when it comes to the silverback's attention. IDK if one would call it "jealousy", but it's common among wild gorillas for the females to not exactly be the best of buddies. However, they're fully aware that the silverback can and will mate with multiple females. Monogamy from a silverback isn't the way it goes. The females, however, are expected to mate only with the dominate silverback. It's unusual that Biddy would have any desire to get "freaky" at her age, though. Most females stop doing that in their mid to late 30's. Also, when trying to impress females, males will often charge and do the whole "look how strong and bad-ass I am" thing.....and it may be Asante who is not interested in Oumbi. Most silverbacks will tolerate any female who chooses to tag along in his group.
That explains why Biddy and Ozala were fighting that time. I wonder why he mates with Biddy and not Asante? I hope Lope isn’t starting to get aggressive as the next oldest male. If so they will have to ship him off somewhere. Thanks for the explanation.

This group dynamics are so different from Shabani family or Momotaro or Haoko. Ozala is scary an Oumbi does not come across very paternal. They are definitely interesting but lots of drama

Poor Oumbi. He clearly did NOT want to do that. During the glare off you could tell he just wanted to be left in peace, and eventually gave in for duty sake. I find it strange he hasn't mated with Asanti. Perhaps she's not fertile?
Asante needs to be moved from Oumbi and placed in another family in the hope that another silverback will take interest in her. Then she can have a normal gorilla female life. I'm sure she would make a good mom.
I think Lope was staring at Oumbi as he was learning male gorilla behavior. Lope as always did not disappoint.

They’ve tried a few years back and they had to sent her back to her family at Twycross as she didn’t get on with anybody.

Pretty much the only benefit of being a silverback, mating rights. The rest of the time is spent protecting the family and looking for food. With all the crap this poor silverback gets from the family it’s no wonder he gets frustrated and snaps every now and then.
