Do you know what would have been an insane way to subvert my expectations? The moment Arya jumps on the Night King he draws his sword and beheads her mid-air. Then the Night King turns to Bran, kneels and places the sword at his feet, episode ends with Bran giving the White Walkers and the Night King his resting bitch face.
And then the longest week of my life would have begun.

@@MrHarrystank Dumb & Dumber were too scared to take Arya, a fan favorite character, down the dark path she started down after Ned's beheading. That's why she only commits to one action that might be considered dark when she poisoned the child, an act that apologists could defend as an act of mercy. This is also why she only toys with the idea of committing to becoming a faceless man to learn their powers before ultimately abandoning them for her own, and the writers', selfish interests. The faceless men are also an organization that two fan favorite characters are affiliated with, so audiences are encouraged to think as little as possible about their purpose, methods, goals, etc because developing them as the assassin death cult they are established to be as as that would taint these two characters and we can't have that. That, of course, made a dog's breakfast of Arya's character arc contributing to the writers' not knowing how to end things with her. She's probably one of the most egregious examples of writer and fan favorite characters being spared the logical consequences of their choices, but examples abound.

What annoys me the most about this episode is how it simply tosses all the morals and all the themes of Game of Thrones straight out the Window.
1. War is horrible and it does terrible things to all partys involved, especially the young and defenseless. It's a pointless cycle of violence and death.
No screw that. War is epic! Isn't it cool how Arya can Ninjajump Icezombies to death? Isn't it cool that the Faceless man teached her that? Yeah, Arya is literally an orphan childsoldier but she's -emotionally crippled- badass now! So 10 years of bloddy civilwar were actually justified in the end.
2. If you make mistakes you die. It doesn't matter if you are a "good" guy or if you see yourself as the protagonist of some epic quest, death comes to all.
Brienne is overrun by a literal wave of zombies? Let's just cut away, she'll be alright in the next shot. Sam is pushed to the ground and cries? Well surely he should be dead...oh no wait we cut away and then he's fine. We even had a scene were Theon is defending himself against a dozen wights with *bow and arrow* and we cut away and then the wights are all dead. When all the wights collapsed after the nightking died there were only named characters left alive in the entire castleyard. Give me a fucking break!
3. The fight for the throne is pointless and pity. Mankind must put it's political squabbles aside and face the threats that endanger us all. Only united can we stand against our enemys.
Nope, the fight for the throne is the endgame. Apocalyptic scenarios can easily be dealt with with a well trained teenage girl. Cersei's tactic of ignoring the threat was completely right, she didn't face any negatives affects by literally betraying mankind.

For all the flaws in this show, cutting the White Walkers short is the main flaw of the whole show. It was the buildup of the entire show.

Yea man, all that hodge podge bullshit about the white walkers, and then none of the main characters even get to fight one in the battle for Winterfell. So disappointing. Jorah gets a Valerian steel sword and for what? He doesn't even get to make use of it. All the mythology and mystery surrounding the enemies, and all that need for dragon glass, etc... goes out the window here. So much wasted time, the last season should be redone, or at least extra scenes should be added in to fill the bullshit gaps here. Go all the way to Dragonstone to get Dragon Glass and see not a single person using it in combat....
The long night battle felt like the characters getting together to go on a holiday team building exercise 😂😂

Way too much plot armor, battle tactics were nonsense, and the Night King dying from Valyrian steel even though he is immune to dragonfire is bullshit. The wights decimated the dothraki, people who have been training since they were four, in seconds, but they cant defeat Sam who was rolling around on the floor for 30 minutes? Jon hid behind some stones to escape Viserion, but earlier in the episode Viserion could blast through the walls of Winterfell? The whitewalkers and wights could hear a drop of blood hit the floor and literally smell living beings but couldn't catch Arya jumping on the night King? The whitewalkers did absolute fuck-all this episode?
Catspaw has more significance than just being Valyrian Steel it was meant to kill Bran and is that the dagger that launched the first major war on the show - the Starks versus Lannister conflict that lead to the War of the Five Kings - was then eventually used to end the Great War.As for the Dothraki being killed so easily because one thing it was complete darkness and ran into the full force of the wights along with a few giants, easily to believe they wouldn't fair well.Jon was able to hide behind the rubble because Viserion was badly injured and breathing fire out his neck at that point so he was no where near 100 percent.Arya is a trained assasin for her whole life and has shown her stealth many times even sneaking up on Jon in Episode 1 this season and then past all the wights in the library.The wight walkers are smart and no way would they put themselves in the front line knowing if 1 of them were killed thousands of dead would fall as well.

The wight walkers are smart? ok what if the walkers moved in groups of 3? O: If one dies the other one could just keep that same army up and running. If it doesn't work that way, the fact that they are so powerful and smart, could mean they could command the wights on the field of battle, and actually set up an assassination on key commanders of their opponents. Instead the night king had a flaw security team -12 wights Walker strong?- and then a jumping assassin thawed their millennial long plan whom only had 3 years of training as a faceless.....

What drives me crazy is in the earlier Seasons Winterfell is made out to be an impenetrable Fortress, Ned Stark famously says 100 men could defend it against 10,000 and they don't do a damn thing with that

Paul Woodnest it’s just like Tywin said to Arya when she was his cup barer. Fortresses were built to withstand an attack from the ground, Not from the sky. So it doesn’t matter how many men attack winterfell but throw a dragon into the mix which can fly and destroy fortresses, It doesn’t matter.

robby it made such little sense to me because I remembered that scene from season 1. The wright that was burning in season 1 caught fire quickly and burnt for ages so it made no sense for them to be able to put out the trench fire like that
You don't get it. Ghost actually died a long time ago and what we see is a ghost. Did you see him interacting with anyone? This is a superb homage to M Night Shyamalan who is no doubt an inspiration for the writers.

There are thousands of TH-cam videos that elaborate on these points. Feel free to watch them. The need for even more people to mention anything else isn’t exactly needed now.
Actually Season 7 goes downhill in the 5th episode already. This episode sets up Beyond the Wall and the forced Littlefinger vs. Arya & Sansa plot that leads to Lfs incredibly unbelievable and undeserved death.
But the whole show in general has its lows in season 5 and 6 already. Jon's and Stannis' storyline and the Dorne plot in season 5 are not that thought-out. Season 6 is a rollercoaster in terms of quality. Arya's and Dany's storylines are bad, unsatisfying, far-fetched and add nothing new. Jon's is mixed while the King's Landing plot is great. The Winds of Winter is the best episode. Battle of the Bastards is visually stunning but unfortunately also implausible and inconsistent in writing.
1:24 Seeing this shot again makes me realize, 99% of those Dothraki that didn't see Melisandre do that should've been freaking out and dropping their suddenly-on-fire swords
it's like they suddenly like witchcraft and fire magic
And think about it. If not for melisandre fire damage, they were about to march with their regular ass dothraki arakhs. Why was the dothraki plan ever going to work?
That's not even including the fact that the Dothraki universally DESPISE magic and would much rather literally DIE than use Magic infused weapons.
Also, I agree, Theon’s death was perfectly done and Alfie acted the fuck out of it. His arc throughout the whole show was everything I hoped it would be.
He's literally the only actor who escaped season 7-8 unscathed by the awful writing. Every single other one was massively reduced by it and you could tell they were checked out and resigned to it all. Alfie soldiered on and did his best with what he was given.

tyskbulle I think that may have been Ned who said that, or was it Theon? I’m not sure. But yes, Winterfell properly defended can hold out against a much larger force laying siege to them. It just shows the stupidity of this episode and final season overall. No logic, whatsoever.

It could have been fixed so easily if they put in some throwaway lines about not tiring the dragons out and making sure they weren't skewered by the icicle spears.
I feel so bad for everyone involved in the show who isn't a writer. Their costume design, graphics work, cinematography, etc... will all be overshadowed and forgotten by D&D's atrocious writing.
Shame. A damn shame.
This show was a career pinnacle and launching point for decades' more work afterwards for hundreds of people. Save your pity.

I love that she didn't resurrect Beric when she was standing next to his body. With Sandor next to her, clearly able to feasibly defend her should wights enter the room. Instead a few minutes later, after Arya kills satan, they slowly leave the room.
The wights kind of forgot they were extremely flammable.
The ice storm forgot that it killed all wildlings in front of the palisade immediately in the episode "Hardhome" .

You know what's worse? they were planning on doing that with the dothraki not having any obsidian weapons. None of them knew Melisandre was gonna show up and buff their weapons with fire. The original plan was to literally send the Dothraki to their deaths.
@@JBrander Well the show later pretended that wights needed fire or dragonfire (Valyrian steel/Dragonglass) to be killed, but that wasn't exactly true. Sure they're downright susceptible to it, but we saw the Thenn and Tormund kill them with metal or even their bare hands and feet. Another thing the writers kinda forgot.

Honestly, the *only* thing I liked about this season was the soundtrack... Rami Djawadi did an absolutely amazing job! It’s beautiful...
the scene when Jon is trying to get to bran and latter arya kills the nk, the music is suffering for bad timing and it's so very long, boring and bad.
Other than that I'm a fan of Ramon djawadi myself.

The worst part is that by the time this episode aired GOT had become so mainstream that majority of the goobers that watched it actually thought it was good. I ain't trying to be some elitist hipster but this shit was hot trash and yet after it aired I didn't know a single person IRL who wasn't raving about how 'cool' it was.
Pretty much the biggest problem in any medium - way too many people solely, exclusively care about big special effects and action and basically nothing else. Unless it's some romcom shit, in which case it has to be as toxic as possible.

Seeing people praise as "the next GoT" and they're right for the wrong reasons, it's similar to the latter half of game of thrones. Big special effects and weak writing, creating something that is shallow and quickly forgotten. Akin to james cameron's Avatar where despite commercially being a colossal success, people struggle to recall any dialogue or interesting moments beyond flashy visuals.

But my point is that arcane might be overhyped, like many shows for example attack on titan if you watch anime, some people treat it like it's the greatest piece of fiction ever. But that doesn't mean it's not good, and neither do arcane. Personally i loved the first act and everything after was just fine to me, but characters like silco are some of the best characters i've seen in animation in quite some time. And his parallel to vander and relationship to jynx was great. But you probably disagree...

I really liked Edd alot, he has been on the show since Season 2 I think. He has been there through all kinds of shit in this series and died because of Sam. Sam had no fucking business even being CLOSE to the fighting...seriously he was a complete liability for the rest of them.

Their battle plans have been bad for a long time. It made no sense that they didn't have Bran constantly scouting the dead with his ravens ever since he got back behInd the wall. They should have known immediately when the wall fell and how the dead were moving. They should have had a lot more time to prepare their defenses with Bran's scouting.
Yeah Bran knew for years he was the main target and didn't tell anyone until they wete planning piss poor defenses.
Not only that, but they could have had a montage of the Dothraki cavalry making hit and run attacks, the Stark army setting booby traps, etc to wear down the numerical advantage of the wights.

Hear me out: bran could have been scouting the walkers, and those trebuchets would have been real handy if they used them in conjunction with bran, just knowing when and where your enemy will be set up a kill box, make some special dragon glass spiked projectiles and bam you have an instant anti death weapon, next the fight would have been far more intense if they have to fight through the undead horde just to get to the walkers kill them to widdle down the army, slowly but surely making the fight more winnable. Before finally only the night king stands between them and victory, this is where the real battle begins, if for whatever stupid reason you want arya to kill the night king make it matter, make it the only choice have her and Jon get locked in a serious 2v1 situation where the NK is fending off their attacks like its nothing, have Jon be about to die and arya jumps on him he grabs her and shoves his spear through her but in her last moments she looks at him and says "not today" and shoves her dagger into his face, as she bleeds out in Jon's arms we see arya stark close her eyes and nymeria open hers. Bonus points if for every walker death we lose at least one major character show how hopeless this battle is.
That Gwendolyn can really yell "argh!" :D
I also love how at 2:15 someone in the room actually took the time to place out all the markers for the undead army, like we get it, you're outnumbered, you dont need to spend 1 hour placing them out on a map
true, some poor soul made those markers for literally no reason
The wights putting out the fire with their bodies seriously pissed me off considering they are supposed to be highly flammable. They should have made the fire bigger, not go out. Plus I honestly laughed when I saw Berric somehow manage to get through that door after being stabbed like 10 times without any wights coming through even though they were literally holding him in the shot before.
Well, if you pile too many flammable materials at once the fire can (and most likely will) be subdued, so...

Supposed to be a scary horror not some plot armor show especially how there at the front and have 100,000 dead men charging! And amount of deaths in this, if there wasn't plot armor this would be 90-95% of the cast dead due to making stupid decisions for battle plans...

There was a cool theory that the NK was Rhaegar, but of course the NK ended up being nobody at all. So I think he's making fun of the fact that for years, a lot of people became really convinced of that cool fan theory but it was another thing the writers just kind of dropped the ball on.
That's what I was wondering he couldn't have been. We found out in season 5 the night king was one of the first men from thousands of years ago.
@@georgebonham4459 well, I think they showed the creation of the white walkers but there were tons of allusions in the books apparently that indicated Rhaegar could definitely be the NK. It just ended up not being that way.
@@davideagin5321 That may be the case in the books, I haven't gotten that far yet. I was just going off the information from the show. So by season 5, we knew the NK couldn't have been Rhaegar. George RR Martin could still make it happen in the books or surprise us with something else, but I don't know if he will get the chance too. He might die before he completes them and leave us with the show.

Why did the Dotraki have regular steel swords when everyone knows it doesn't kill the dead. They didn't know Melisandre was showing up and they are on the front line with plain old steel swords.
