    There are 3D printers and 3D prints that make sense and then there are these.
    The amount of filament, time and resources spent to make this boggles my mind when there are much more efficient ways to do it.

    So a big vanity project that costs money for the plans, can't be altered, and takes 5+kg of filament (for the frame only) and days and days to print. All to make a box that costs more than some 2020 extrusion. Sometimes 3D printing is not the optimal choice.....

  • @JenSalik_

    The price and time it takes to print this is quite insane. Using 2020 (or 3030) extrusions would make much more sense from an economical point of view. The advantage of this system is the modularity and reusability.

  • @MrHeHim
    @MrHeHim 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    That seems cool, can't help think that's too much plastic 😅 I can see it being twice as thin and still strong enough, idk. Furthermore, why not use 2x2 lumber or 3/4" aluminum L bar (about 2x the price) and then only 3D print the joints and hinges. Then you can use the extra money to double pane the walls, maybe with thinner plexiglass and still have the same if not more rigidity from the plexiglass itself.
    You can also apply weather film to the plexiglass to further insulate. I did some testing years ago using a Kill-A-Watt meter, found when i enclosed my i3 Duplicator (clone) machine (200x200x195mm) the heated bed didn't need to work as hard and to a much lesser extent neither did the hot-end and ended up using about 2/3's the electricity for an hour long print. If i had to guess from vague memory of calculating electricity costs, it was about 1/5th the cost of the filament at $20 per Kg if it was enclosed, using about 120 watts on average printing PLA and about 160 printing ABS. I know it was close to 200 watts on average printing PLA in the open

    Hmm wouldn’t it be cheaper and faster to use aluminum extrusion profiles?
    I counted 12 spools. Alone the filament would cost over 200€.

    • @MandicReally
      @MandicReally  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I used Elegoo PLA which is pretty affordable $10-15 a spool. But extrusion profiles would be faster. They’d just require the time and skill to cut them to length and source panels / designs to mount panels. For me? No big deal. But to some folks that’s more work than they are able to handle or comfortable with. Or what if you don’t have a chop saw? $200 saw to make an enclosure? It’s definitely not for everyone, but it’s fun.

  • @kazolar
    @kazolar 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +35

    Saw another creator feature this, I get it, they're really pushing it. My problem is -- I can't justify paying for functional STLs -- I need step files. The decorative stuff, sure, STLs -- the frame pieces, I want to be able to customize, and STLs -- not even at the top tier, no step files for customization. Deal breaker.

    • @MandicReally
      @MandicReally  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      An understandable position. I’d say you can request additions or modifications but I’m also a tinkerer so I can understand the feeling or wish to just do things yourself. That’s us though. Not everyone has the time or skills and many just want a complete option.

    • @KaminKevCrew
      @KaminKevCrew 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      @@MandicReallyI have to say I agree with Kazolar above. Sure, not everyone has the time or skills, and just want a complete option - that’s totally fair. However, I don’t think there’s a single CAD package out there that doesn’t support STEP files. It’s literally just running one more export after the design process is finished - assuming they’re using a real CAD package to design these in the first place.
      More to Kazolar’s point, not having STEP files for decorative objects makes sense. Frequently, those types of models are made in modeling programs like Blender, Maya, or 3DS Max. To my knowledge, none of these programs even have a STEP export capability. However, for anything that is meant to be actually used it makes a lot more sense to model the object in a CAD package so you can take advantage of things like parametric modeling. I would happily wager that these were designed in CAD, rather than a modeling platform. I hope the 3D printing community starts to move towards supporting STEP files in addition to STLs when it comes to more ‘useful’ items. It makes modifications and tweaks a lot easier, and I can’t really think of any drawbacks to including STEP files for all models made in CAD.

    I wonder if the fitment allows for the user to make structural reinforcements in the middle of the enclosure "faces" using more pieces ("dividing" each face so it would use two acrylic panels instead of a bigger one), therefore making the structure more rigid BEFORE the final assembly.
    I think it would be awesome to customize this to receive a honeycomb storage wall instead of pegboards.

  • @ThePrintHouse
    @ThePrintHouse 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    I really love this idea, though I can't help but think for the average person this is going to take 3 weeks at minimum to print an enclosure for their ender 3 sized machine. It's a great option for those that want infinite customizability or don't have a deadline.

  • @s0d4c4n
    @s0d4c4n 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    3d printing is great for custom parts. Bulk generic parts like bars and panels usually makes more sense to buy mass produced. Unless you're just going through the expense and effort for the sake of it.

    • @MandicReally
      @MandicReally  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      From a time standpoint acrylic panels make a ton of sense. And they are available or easy to get custom cut. But the modularity makes sense in a change stand point. Like I fully intended to use this with the Neptune 4 Max, but now I’m gonna use it with a smaller machine. And it’s easy to make that change. It’s not for everyone, especially if your time = money, but it’s fun and functional.

    Saw another creator's video on the same product, but this video showcased the enclosure in a much better fashion due to excellent print quality and attention to details, good job! However I'm not going to back it on KS, simply because $50+ is a lot for STLs only (no CAD) and on top of that you need 4-5 spools of filament + panels. There's no way it's going to keep ABS smell inside (without a fan to create negative pressure), because of how many printed parts are used. Also launching it on KS is controversial by itself - they already have the files mostly ready

      @MandicReally  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is a valid discussion but I don’t know that it’s really as much of a issue as folks think. My Voron 2.4 is smaller internal volume than this chamber will be when I shrink it down. And after dozens of hours of printing ASA, the chamber on that doesn’t get over 40-45C. So not even to the lowest glass transition temperature of PLA. PETG would likely last indefinitely at those temps. PLA may degrade over time.

      @@Joe-wk9ow as someone who has used something other than ABS on a Voron, NOPE. I tried to make accent parts out of PETG on my first build to get the color I wanted. The endstop switch mount has to be adjusted every couple days as the material warps and it comes loose. The hotend mount was a total disaster. (No shock there) etc etc. PLA and PETG will give more over time than ABS and ASA will. It’s often referred to as “Creep”. The constant load of weight or belt tension causes them to bend or give even at normal temperatures.

Crate3ds designs are way too beefy and printing all that on a couple machines would take way too long, last crate3d sponsored video I saw was something like 11 kg of filament for a briefcase? Do you know what else could work... a cardboard box... yes, but really. just go to Home Depot and get some acrylic sheets and some acrylic adhesive... a plastic jigsaw blade and have at it...maybe some hinges so it can fold up when taken off... If I get one of these or any large printer like this I will set it near a corner and bolt on brackets to brace the top rails to reduce movement and vibrations

    9-10kg is $200. You can just get extrusions for much less.

      You aren’t wrong. I did the math and I spent exactly $208 on filament. Granted this is larger scale than it would HAVE to be.

    Very cool, but way too much plastic. That would take me a month or longer. :)

    You should design your own printing enclosures instead of doing video's on sponsored stuff.. i bet you do an even better job at it!

    This is my point of view on this product, not on your work and videos.
    This is just a waste of plastic. Grab some wood and have it done in 2h, why waste kilos of plastic, print time and electricity.
    It's not even sturdy or anything, I see no point in using this instead of cardboard pieces glued together.
    As for a whole video being a sponsored spot, I don't like the product so I'm noticing it more, but I'm not complaining when it's a printer review, so heh. Gotta pay the bills. Kudos to your patience printing so much for it.

    10 kg of filament?? So like $150-$200??? Seems like a huge waste of money.

      My shipping address is publicly available information, as it’s a secure 3rd party location removed from my home and studio. Thank you for the concern though.

    I just don't get projects like this. Ideally, you need a printer that's already enclosed to be able to even print an enclosure. If you don't have a print farm of your won, you're spending literal weeks printing parts for this and you're spending kilos and kilos of filament on it. With a couple of lengths of aluminum and some cheap acrylic, you get the same for a fraction of the cost and no time at allm you don't even need a working, enclosed printer to build it. Are there seriously people printing up monstrosities like this and putting them to actual use?
