    I thought the lesson learned from smash 4's dlc wave was to not release veterans as dlc. This would sting especially hard because unlike the dlc veterans in brawl, there won't have been a game's worth of absence in between. People will find it incredibly scummy and disappointing.

      Also it would be better to try and get first party characters in the base roster and not have them be DLC, because we all know how that went with Corrin and Byleth and if their games come out too late or after Smash then they shouldn’t get a free pass if other games don’t. Arms could’ve got Min Min and Xenoblade 2 could’ve got Pythra in the base roster since they were actually out before Ultimate.

      @@dee7352 Honestly if it were up to me, every Pokemon rep would be a trainer to represent each generation, obviously with 2 pokemon instead of 3 because there is such a thing as too much. Like give us Giovanni with Mewtwo and Persian where both gets a move that summons a rocket grunt. As well as Cynthia with Garchomp and Lucario, plus N with Zoroark and Sigilyph. Then Ethan/Lyra/Kris with Typhlosion and Pikachu because where else are you going to put that rat? Having something like this gives lots of space to represent both the big hot-shots like Lucario, Mewtwo, Greninja (Maybe they could be with Serena/Calem alongside Braixen since Gen 6 has no other interesting characters.), as well as some of the more background "yeah that sure is a creature" pokemon like Persian, Sigilyph, and Mawile (Maybe that could be with Marine and Grimmsnarl, idk.) And it'd be a great way to make sure no generation feels too overrepresented.

    Reserving a bunch of legacy characters for DLC (if you’re going to cut them just cut them), keeping none of the whackier characters and not adding any new ones, and cutting any kind of story mode idea so it can be “Brawls thing” when it’s the main thing anyone *really* wants when they say they want a crossover between these characters are all things I disagree with.

      “We cut out x and y characters and in turn made a bunch of tech changes that the average child and parent won’t understand. Oh you can buy x and y again! They aren’t included in the base game anymore”
      The tech changes seem great but Fudj focused so much on them that this smash game would EASILY be the worst selling (besides 64) if the next Nintendo console has backwards compatibility

    • @brogoyle
      @brogoyle 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@undefender Honestly I think one of the smartest ideas is to make more of the "tech" actual gameplay features. Or at least make them more intuitive for new players & marketing. For instance, Nick All Stars has the air dash which lets you additionally do the wave dash, and honestly it makes way more sense to me to boost yourself into the ground, than to airdodge into the ground... Even if wavedashing would technically still be a tech. Heck, maybe you can "air dash" on the ground and get a wave dash without jumping. I know smash has some sense of button real estate, but i think you can spare at least one more button that can effectively do some of the old tech, maybe it can be something entirely new too. Fudj already did it right making the assist meter something you can advertise that adds to the game.

    Biggest problem with the cuts so far is down to them being cut due to who they are and not what their playstyle is.
    Incineroar is the prime example of how to do a heavy right, but he's cut for no reason. Just a bad decision there, only made worse by including Lucario, a character that doesn't feel good to play and doesn't really add much to the game.

      Lucario at least has a spot amongst more well known or unique Pokémon. • @Tribow
    @Tribow 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +35

    Btw, I think the assist thing is great, but it would ultra suck if those assists acted like the way assist trophies do now.
    I think the best way to handle it would be having the assist do a single attack when they are called on.
    HOWEVER, depending on what the direction the control stick is held when using the assist input, the player can control which attack the assist uses.
    This will keep assist completely user controlled and allow for more comoetitive play. If people are fans of the old assist trophy style then the option will be there.

    • @nickziegler1904
      @nickziegler1904 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I think the assist feature would work better if each assist had one move. You could just balance it by the power of the move vs the meter build. Have one assist be a small buff that charges super quickly. Have another assist be beasically a final smash but it takes almost a whole game to charge. It also helps counterplay because you know what the opponent's assist will do.
      Turning the assists into like MvC assists would likely mean less individual assists. Also that kind of complicated, high complexity mental stack game design just feels a bit much for smash imo.

    • @Tribow
      @Tribow 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@nickziegler1904 Well, I wasn't imagining anything more than 3 different attacks for each assist.
      Up for an upwards attack, neutral/side for a default attack, down for a down attack. (there could of course be exceptions to this rule.)
      Would work for a more combo-oriented smash title.
      Assist trophies already had a lot of work put into them with their AI and whatnot. I don't think my idea would require more work than what they already did for Assist Trophies.
      I can understand the mental stack thing though. Personally, I'd like smash to have more of a mental stack, but that's me.
      Your idea is really neat too. It reminds me a bit of how Arcana Heart's mechanics work but a bit less complicated. A passive buff and a big attack to cash out on is really cool. My only worry is if the buffs can remain unique among the amount of assists Fudj wants to aim for. There's only so many stats you can adjust before you start having overlap.

While I agree in shrinking the roster, if you really want Bayo, ken, ryu, and wolf, then just say so and make them base roster and have less DLC, or think of new characters. It was understandable in Sm4sh when they brought back Doc, Mewtwo, and Lucas cuz it was the first time ever implementing DLC in the series. But now that DLC is an expected part of the game, no one wants to see the DLC spots being taken up by characters that we’ve already seen before

Pikachu is the mascot, Trainer represents an integral part of the series (evolutions and having a team), Greninja is the #1 most popular Pokemon, Mewtwo represents the legendaries, and Lucario.... well Lucario's just cool. Jiggly is cut because we already have a more iconic pink puff ball, and they got lost in the massive wave of the amount of Pokemon, making them less important.

    @ericlippe 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    I love your takes on characters and gameplay style, but as soon as you got to game mechanics, you lost me. It just felt like you wanted to go back to smash 4's mechanics- mechanics that were not particularly enjoyable or good. It just felt like you want the mechanics that you're used to back without concern for how they will affect the newer playerbase or casuals. The shorthop aerial macro is occasionally frustrating, but opens up the game to non-competitive players so much. It needs tweaking, but cutting it altogether is a terrible idea. Removing 2-framing seems insane and combined with multiple airdodges means you've just created the most defensive off stage that the game has ever seen. With better recoveries like those in ultimate and like those you propose for heavies, it will be impossible to kill someone once they're off stage because an airdodge and a ledge grab later and they're home free. 2 framing is so important to pushing advantage state- it is the only difference between an edge guard and a reverse edge guard.

    • @NocturnalFudj
      @NocturnalFudj  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'd disagree! Directional airdodges are one of the things making many recoveries too powerful/hard to edgeguard, in particular I'm thinking of characters like Ness and Sonic who now have to commit to their recoveries more often. Furthermore, 2-framing is maybe the #1 contributor to edgeguarding not being more of a factor - I can't imagine why someone would defend it. It's not a punishment for being off-stage (that'd be edgeguarding) it's a punishment for literally just trying tor recover, which is a fundamental part of the game and not something you should risk losing a stock for! 2-framing is also perhaps the biggest thing stopping edgeguarding from being more prominent. Why go off-stage and edgeguard when you can stand at ledge and spam your busted Wolf/Pichu F-Tilt or Roy/Chrom D Tilt instead?
      The classic Smash 4 airdodge is perfectly easy to bait and punish. 2-frames and directional airdodges are holding what's holding edgeguarding back.

    • @ericlippe
      @ericlippe 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@NocturnalFudj I think a problem we see with characters like Ness is that he was given an extra long airdodge. If his was normal and characters with already amazing recoveries (like sonic) had theirs reduced like Bayo, I think it would be better on the whole.
      and as far as 2-framing goes, I really do think that removing it makes the off stage disadvantage less disadvantageous. I think some characters (like chrom) benefit massively from having a 2-frame option because they couldn't edge guard normally. I would be totally open to having other characters rebalanced around whether or not they can edge guard. In Ult, Puff has one of the best edge guarding abilities in the game, which is why her down tilt and down smash (her only two-framing moves) are awful. Characters like Pichu or Wolf or Lucas should have their best 2-framing moves better balanced around their edge guarding abilities. Characters like Chrom, belmonts, or Little Mac would suffer MASSIVELY if they only had edge guarding to push their advantage state.
      I see how you are frustrated by these options, however, I think having more options on the whole leads to a more enjoyable experience. The game needs to be balanced for risk-reward to make sure that you don't get a dominant strategy like Pichu f-tilt or Ness airdodge. I think it comes down to the question of: what do you want a kill to look like in your game? Melee has long combos that lead to a character's signature kill move (up air/smash for fox, dair/bair for falco, fsmash/dair for Marth, bair/rest for puff). Smash 4 was much more often racking up damage to high percents before killing with a smash attack (or another strong attack often boosted by rage), OR it was a Bayo combo. Ultimate, I find, has some of the best mixtures of kills with edge guards, reads, and combos, although the game does seem to tend towards ledgetrapping as time has gone on, which I find represents a rather large design flaw. Obviously these are massive oversimplifications, but I think that the most common kill in your game would be closer to smash 4 with the addition of the assists. I don't love that idea because I enjoy the faster paced kills of melee and ultimate more, where racking up damage is ancillary to getting a kill. I think it makes for a more interesting dynamic where games can swing back and fourth quickly while also rewarding the better player.

    I think "cutting" any character is going to ruin the Smash hype cycle, as each new announcement will be accompanied with a feeling of dread. Is my main safe? Will the next trailer prove that my favorite characters are cut from the game? There's not a lot of hype in finding out that Pikachu and Jigglypuff are returning for the 6th game in a row. Even for more "obscure" picks like Robin, I can't imagine feeling excited when all I'm feeling is relief that my guy made the cut.
    Instead, I think they need to build the roster again from the ground up. Mario should have a moveset that utilizes a wide variety of recurring powerups, as well as Cappy for his Smash attacks. Luigi's moveset should be fully based on the Luigi Mansion games. Peach uses some of her moves from Showtime. Pikachu gets a full overhaul with moves like Electro Ball, Iron Tail, Volt Tackle, Fly. DK throws barrels and utilizes Rambi and Squawks for movement.
    The only way to shrink the existing cast is to treat each returning mascot like a new, or at least heavily-updated, character. The excitement isn't "who's going to make the cut?" but "How has this character evolved?" This also provides a lot of room to bring in other highly-requested Nintendo characters without missing out on Smash history.

    I don't have much of a personal investment in Smash, nor do I possess much knowledge on the mechanics, so as long as the next one is fun and maybe easier to get into if you're playing by yourself that'll be all I can ask for.
    With that being said, there's no need to add Alear. Fire Emblem Engage wasn't that much of a landmark for the franchise; sales were solid though unspectacular, but there's far less buzz about this game in the community than there was for Three Houses. If you don't want to bring back Byleth, just wait for the next Fire Emblem game and see how popular that game is and how well you could implement the protagonist. Otherwise, with a Genealogy remake believed to be in the works, someone liked Sigurd could be in the roster instead.
    Also, props to picking the best new map Splatoon 3 introduced while having no knowledge of the game. Hagglefish Market was the best new-to-Splatoon 3 map at launch until the most recent update which added Shipshape Cargo and Crableg Capital.

      If Alear was added, that just needlessly adds to the entire “Fire Emblem is liked by the developers” meme, and this time it would have bite because Engage adds nothing, save yet another game needed to be represented because it is another world. Corrin had that complaint but as a Manakete he/she at least plays distinctly. Alear, as befitting the game he comes from, does not have any distinct gimmicks from any other Fire Emblem lord and it is far too late to make Marth/Roy clones. At least in Alear’s game it is because the game’s gimmick is that it has a lot of the past gimmicks, but since the gimmick of Alear is that Engage is so cliché it pulls from every game, that does not translate well into fighter gameplay and people would hate it.

I'm sadly a huge Xenoblade fan, so for Noah it would be like Mio, Aegis, and then random. Maybe Mio would throw out weak attacks and draw "aggro", but if you fulfill a criteria you could fuse into Ouroboros and deal a single massive blow final smash style. Then you'd have Pyra and Mythra which would provide a power-up to Noah's sword moves- maybe allow him to draw Lucky-7 or use his gauntlet. Finally you'd have random which competitive play would naturally not use because of its uncertain effects and lack of balance, but be a ton of fun causally! For Shulk he would have Aegis and then maybe Reyn- reusing character assists, but with unique effects as to not balloon the hypothetical development time with a ton of extra characters

    One of Smash biggest Strengths, is in my Opinion, also a huge Weakness:
    The "Standardized" Character-Controls/Design. Most characters, not all, but most feel kinda same~ish at times. Which is fine, it is easier to get playing that way.
    But they...sometimes feel a bit flat and the lack of linear design/ creative design makes me sad. I don't know how to describe my point propperly, but as a contrast:
    Rivals of Aether's Characters have mostly linear Designs: a unique feature they are all based around, with some moves that have other utility, but overall they have that one theming, and try to abuse it a lot.

    In hindsight that post just felt super unnecessary as if Sakurai has a personal vendetta against Camelot, the people who created Waluigi as a Tennis Partner for Wario and also the people behind Golden Sun. Isaac getting in would be the cherry on top of the Waluigi reveal!

    I honestly want a reboot for the series. I understand people don't want to risk losing their favorite characters, but we already lost so much just for the sake of a roster. No trophies, they were replaced with spirits. World of Light was garbage. Melee had the perfect concept for a singleplayer mode, and they never did anything like that again. Some minigames like Break the Targets and All Star Mode were missing. Even ARMS had better online than Smash Ultimate did, at least as far as casual play is concerned. If cutting half the roster leads for a more well rounded experience, then I am all for it.

    I honestly don't see the point of cutting characters if you're just going to bring them back as DLC. The rule was to not have 3rd party characters in. Even if their moveset was reworked, it'd still be dissapointing since it's not going to have any variety to have returning characters as DLC.

  • @Frysbear

    I think the next game needs to go even more extreme with the changes. Scrap MOST of the cast. Focus on some new ones, and only bring back the main core of iconic characters. Then I think every character needs a moveset overhaul after deciding on a completely new control scheme. But that's just me. I'd also love a focus on more types of game modes with stages to compliment them. A "Classic" mode on smaller stages, that uses the classic stock setup. But then other stuff, like larger maps with a sort of battle royal vibe. Some stages that are races to get to the finish with enemies and sections where you can stop to fight each other to move forward. And then bring back something like smash run where you can power up and then face off at the end. Just a more varied mode style of game.

    Surprised you didn’t bring in Raven Beak from Metroid Dread. The game was a huge success with players and critics and basically revived what was considered a long dead format for a long dead franchise. And Raven Beak in particular was a big part of that appeal - an actually good and actually tough final boss, an intimidating villain with extremely cool abilities and lore significance for Samus that even outshines Ridley.
    A lot of videos about him online are showered in comments from people dying to see him in Smash and he has tons of abilities that would fit the Smash format perfectly as-is.
    I think he’s a no brainer for Smash 6, they’d be fools not to give the spotlight to Dread. It might be the most important 2D Metroidvania game since Super Metroid itself.

Since Bandai is producing Smash Bros. and have Dark Souls as one of their franchise, it would be duable, really nice, and I would love to have some Dark Souls OST in Smash overall.

    Smash doesn’t need a “reboot.” It needs a better story mode, some unique mini games like Break the Targets, and many of the characters should have their movesets reworked to better represent their abilities in their home series. Mario, for example, could get rid of his cape (which functions nothing like it does in the Mario games) and replace it with a Cappy move. Ganondorf and Daisy should be mostly or completely de-cloned, while Dark Samus can be a semi-clone with some unique moves like that one where she shoots tendrils out of the ground. Jigglypuff should stay as one of the original 12 but could get a more interesting moveset with stuff like Hyper Voice, Draining Kiss, and Dazzling Gleam.
    I don’t agree with cutting any of the Nintendo veterans except for Pichu (who is just a smaller, less popular version of the series mascot with a weird crippling gimmick) and Young Link (3 Links is too many and Toon Link has a more unique visual style which should be reflected in a de-cloned moveset.) Lucina, Chrom, and Dr. Mario can also stay but be relegated to alternate costumes with unique animations/voice lines. Ideally none of the 3rd party characters would be cut either but I don’t know about the logistics of it. Regardless, I think they should mostly focus on adding Nintendo characters next time such as Dixie Kong and Toad.

  • @the3dluxe53

    I’d replace some characters in the DLC and put them in base game. Namely Sonic, Pac-Man and Wolf. Also Megaman should be in Base game since I’d say he’s a pretty significant 3rd party character to Nintendo. Then I’d put Paper Mario and Crash Bandicoot in the DLC. Despite a big selling point being reworks I still think you need more new characters than old to sell smash DLC.

    I think your roster choices overall are good; I agree with a lot of them. I think at this point it'd be hard to get down to 50 between keeping the most important characters and adding new ones. But I agree that it makes sense to cut enough to decrease the size somewhat. I think around 60 is a more realistic number. And thank you for keeping the echo fighters. I almost always see people immediately cutting the echo fighters, which makes no sense to me because it's basically free extra characters. I can't think of a good reason to cut an echo fighter. And Shadow and Dixie Kong as echo fighters would be so cool.
    One issue I have with your lineup is locking the third party characters largely behind DLC. I think Sonic and Pac-Man are as close to locks for the base lineup as third party can be. I don't it's possible for Travis to be in the base lineup over them; he would definitely be the DLC. I think returning characters like Ryu/Ken and Bayonetta would also be more likely in the base game, with any new third party characters being the DLC. Overall I think you're right that most of the third party characters should be cut. I would keep the same ones you chose, plus Mega Man.
    I can't imagine them having so few Pokemon in the final game. Going from 8 (or basically 10 because Pokemon Trainer) to 4 is extreme, especially when Pokemon is one of the biggest Nintendo franchises. Pichu is an obvious cut if not made an echo fighter. I could see cutting Greninja and Incineroar too. I wouldn't cut Mewtwo or Pokemon Trainer; I would cut Lucario over either. The biggest problem here though is a lack of representation past generation 1. I do think overall most people, including me, care most about gen 1 Pokemon, but there should be some representation afterwards. My idea would be including more Pokemon Trainer variants. You could have a second with say Totodile, Monferno, and Sceptile and then a third with maybe Snivy, Torracat, and Greninja. This gives you 1 starter from each gen 2 to 7.
    I know there is more demand for cutting Fire Emblem than Pokemon, but I also think you went too far with the cuts here. Ike is the most popular Fire Emblem character by a wide margin, and his games are often considered among the best by fans. Byleth is also representing one of the highest regarded games, and in this case also the best selling, and a recent game. Other than those 2, I think your Fire Emblem cuts all make sense. I'm not confident Engage will still be the newest game when the next Smash Bros is released. I do think Alear would be a great new addition specifically because of the uniqueness the engage mechanic can bring. You can use Alear to feature more Fire Emblem characters by engaging with characters that were cut like Roy and Corrin or characters that haven't been able to be in Smash Bros yet like Celica or Lyn. Speaking of Lyn, adding only new Fire Emblem characters has left some of the most important characters out of the game. I think an argument can be made for adding either Lyn or Hector. Both represent the first Fire Emblem game sold in the US. Lyn is the second most popular character in the franchise, and while she would be another sword fighter, she would have some uniqueness compared to the other sword lords due to her higher speed and lower power, and she would have access to a bow. Hector meanwhile is the most popular male character not in the game, and would be very unique compared to other Fire Emblem characters due to being armored (so a heavyweight character, which could use more representation) and an axe unit.
    Other than that, it's mostly miscellaneous comments. Ice Climbers and Sheik both feel more like Smash Bros characters than characters from their original franchise, and should be included in every entry in my opinion. I think Little Mac and Dunk Hunt are cool first party characters, so they should come back too. Wolf should probably be cut if we're being realistic. He's pretty similar to Fox and Falco, and I'd argue Star Fox isn't a big enough deal to bring him back. I don't have much thoughts on your choices for new characters, but I feel like Tails is overdue for being in the game.
    I think you are reworking Sonic and Ganondorf. Yep, I definitely agree on those. Reworking some old characters is a great idea.

      Yeah even in Melee with its “subpar” single player content, I remember spending a stupid number of hours in the Classic, Adventure, All-Star, character-specific Destroy the Targets, trophy gachapon, and Home Run modes.
      Brawl’s sub space emissary was a standout and that game also introduced a great stage builder, the ideal mix of approachable and flexible.

    I feel like Galacta Knight could work as his own character rather than an echo fighter, he has tons of his own unique abilities like creating laser beams, summoning lightning and flames, makes Heart Spears rain from the sky, can create interdimensional cuts in the fabric of the universe, and has a shield (definitely his most powerful ability) and while he is similar to Meta Knight in design and in his basic lance attacks (and I guess in their tornado attacks, but I mean it's 1 move), I personally think there's enough to work with where you could give him at least a mostly unique moveset.
