I disagree with the main point. yeah, corrin sucked, but if you count the clones, then fire emblem has 8 characters and mario, basically the hallmark francise of nintendo's, has 10. I get his point that it is all diffrent stories, but in the end, it is the third most rep. franchise and has middling sales to say the least. if we had other fan favorites like waluigi, geno, ect. and there were more characters for each francise, like 1 more, then I would be fine with fire emblem. The "Hoes Mad" image has been going around since Hero was added. It's just another shitty meme that's overstayed its welcome (but I did enjoy "Hoes Fatally Furious" when Terry was added)
Hoes Fatally Furious was the best incarnation of the meme, it should’ve died after that. But then Byleth happened and FE fans spammed it to high fucking heaven, and now it’s become one of the most unfunny and annoying Smash memes to date.
Hoes Mad is a tool that should have been used more sparingly. Someone just stating that they’re disappointed with the character? Don’t use Hoes Mad, they’re entitled to not be happy with it if they aren’t happy with it, so long as they respect those who are happy about it. Someone arguing up an absolute storm about how Masahiro Sakurai is Satan incarnate for approving a video game character that Nintendo put forward to him or something like that? _That’s_ when you pull out the Hoes Mad image. TL;DR: hoes mad should be funny but it can’t be now because people didn’t know where it was and wasn’t appropriate.

The sheer quantity of Fire Emblem characters actually had a reverse effect on me as in "If this franchise has this much characters, it probably has a giant legacy and great games"
well, its been around since 1990 and has over 17 games on its belt, and even the "bad ones" are only bad in the story department, as gameplay wise every fire emblem game is good at best and decent at worst (its a nintendo game after all). the real problem is with the western audience, who think that the franchise doesnt have enough impact to justify their representation in smash, ignoring that BOTH Smash and Fire Emblem are japanese games, and in japan Fire Emblem is as important as Zelda, the only franchise that blows both of them out of the water in terms of popularity is Dragon Quest, but since its not a Nintendo game, shouldnt be compared with other franchises in terms of content in smash.
@@ayar2 Fire Emblem isn't even remotely important or popular in Japan. The best selling pre-Awakening game was the first one that got localized, and even then, the series failed to break 1 million until Awakening. You're ignorant if you think FE was ever a major franchise of any kind in Japan prior to it nearly dying and getting Awakened with Awakening.
@@espurrseyes42 You're implying that The Blazing Blade sold the best in Japan prior to Awakening, which would be false; it only had about 250,000 copies sold there. That honor belongs to Mystery of the Emblem, which sold _more than 700,000_ copies, which (while not Mario levels of cash bringer) is still a significantly high total of sales, especially considering that it's a Japan-only release. That game is exactly what truly placed Fire Emblem as a tactical RPG royalty in Japan, until Radiant Dawn almost killed it.
@@DavidHutchinson0713 That's still MAD low (less than what Blazing and even Sacred Stones sold worldwide). Currently nowhere near enough to call it "popular" considering what the NES Final Fantasy Trio and the 1st Dragon Quest put out. "Niche" is the term you're looking for. It had a small following at best, and that's still roughly the case nowadays seeing as 3M sales pales in comparison BotW Switch selling into the 20Ms.
@@espurrseyes42 Ah, but what you fail to take into account is that Fire Emblem's _legacy_ far outweighs its sales. Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, despite only modest sales and (according to series creator Shozou Kaga) a lower critical reception than you'd expect, became seen as _the_ game that launched the tactical RPG genre in Japan, along with Sega's Shining Force series. As such, the series has often been credited as an influence, direct or not, towards games that would come after it but localized before it, such as Tactics Ogre, Disgaea, and Final Fantasy Tactics. Indeed, the genre would have been much more different than it is today were it not for Fire Emblem's success, as many gameplay elements that would become a normality today, up to and including permadeath, were codified by the series. Additionally, Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light would also be credited as a pioneer in multimedia advertising through its use of a live-action television commercial in addition to magazine previews, which would later become commonplace with other series such as The Legend of Zelda. Thus, it is not the sales number that landed Fire Emblem a spot I video game history, but the scope of influence it truly has, one that's oft overlooked.

I also personally am a fan of Fates, and because of this, I think that it's an overhated game. All he did when mentioning Fates is talk about how bad it is and how Corrin is basically a sinful scourge against not just Fire Emblem but humanity as a whole, which has all been echoed countless times by the many haters of this game. I mean, it's fine if you dislike the game, but I don't think it's as bad as people constantly say it is and if anything, his opinion of it only summarizes the general reception the game has received by so many
@@matthewkuscienko4616 also, fates is not really that bad of a game. i think most of the hate comes from the implications of the game rather than its actual content (namely, old fans were afraid FE would steer away from its roots and become a glorified dating sim). now that echoes and 3H put it back on track, people are more willing to see what it did right. the plot is still a mess of missed potential, and the characters are fun, but not that interesting with only a few exceptions, but it really shines in gameplay, especially in conquest. it took the gameplay of awakening and fine tuned it with better map design and a less overpowered, yet more reliable pair up system. we should also not forget what it did to armor knights, taking an infamously terrible class (most good armored units like oswin were good despite their class, not because of it) and giving it its own niche as a wall, both by nerfing HP and evasion and giving them the wary fighter skill, which mitigated their greatest weakness
The problem with Corrin is that they have the personality of paste. Like they say “I win!” And “Good.” when they win they have no character to speak of
that's not a problem unique to corrin. most of the fire emblem reps have almost no personality. marth is like corrin if their story and character arc were actually well-written, roy is just a retread of marth (he doesn't have any of the same hotheaded personality traits he has in smash), robin is a self-insert, so that pretty much automatically damages their character since they have to be as relatable as possible, and byleth's total lack of characterization is literally a plotpoint in three houses. hell, i'd argue corrin's lack of character is more faithful to their original game than roy. people only like roy because sakurai gave him a personality, something he did not have in FE6. at least in smash, corrin is just bland and not actively hateable like they are in fates.
I also hate Corrin for his stupid desicions in Fire Emblem Fates and how he mostly survives due to intervention from his family or the complacency of his enemies.

Fun Fact : Byleth full name is Byleth Eisner. Eisner means ironworker in germany and iron is called Fe in periodic table. So you could say Byleth full name is Byleth Fire Emblem.
I love how most Byleth Defenders are simps for the Fem version when funnily enough Byleth isn’t even a feminine sounding name neither is Corrin. Shit at least Robin can actually be a unisex name. I still find it funny that Byleth, a character that literally has an in-lore explanation for why they're a blank slate, still has more personality than Corrin, a character who is supposed to be the emotional crux of their story Edit: I haven't played FE: Fates since its last DLC came out, so everything in the comments is valid criticism; there's some good stuff in there
Byleth is overhated. Sure, they aren’t the best 3h character, but they still do have some character traits, like being socially awkward, hating his Ashen Demon title, and his expressing emotions arc. Corrin’s personality is being nice and that’s it.
I mean, Corrin spend most of his/her life isolated in a tower with nothing to worry or learn about the real world, so it kinda makes sense for him/her to be "innocent", but yeah, there are some times when Corrin is downright an idiot.
I don't know about this one, Byleth's in-lore explanation is just an excuse to pull a "Joker" in the game, a blank, almost silent protagonist who just talks when they need to be badass, and are also loved by everyone for no specific reason, while Corrin just has the last one of that characteristics and at least talks in their supports (which is the reason why people hate them please shut the fuck up Corrin)
Not only do I hate Corrin and Byleth but also their voices, “Perhaps I was too harsh on Smash 4 Fox” I didn’t think there could be anything worse than Smash 4 Fox.
I mean, there's also the fact that Jeralt is rather stoic himself, and Sitri was seemingly known to also have trouble expressing emotions, so it's a case of Byleth coming out as this ultra weirdo and they're left not knowing why and just going with the flow, while having to be brought back to live via pope shenanigans after being born, so they're this half zombie? Imo, Byleth has some interesting things about them that can be looked into despite them being mostly silent. So saying that they're blank wouldn't really be correct, I feel. Just quiet, unnaturally quiet. I mean, FEH somewhat expands upon that. I love Byleth, but they aren't perfect, at all, but some things about them kind of fly over people's heads. Granted, it'd be more of the fault of Byleth being mostly silent.

the Reason for fate's sloppy story, is because the writers where trying to achieve too much with not enough time. Intelligents Systems had an idea for Fate to have three stories to appeal to everyone, but they realized that they didn't have enough writers. So they hired an outside writer, Shin Kibayashi was that writer. Nintendo wanted Shin to write the outline for each pathway, what happened instead is that Shin wrote 500 pages for each pathway. Nintendo knew this was too long so they cut the story into pieces without the writers permission and the fact the Nintendo demanded Fates come on the Fire Emblem Anniversary only made things worse. Which resulted in this hilariously mess of a story. The good news this that there is a manga based on Fates that is a little better. Its called Fire Emblem If: the Crown of Niberlung.

@@bet3240 Well you're also forgetting that insertions like Steve were already planned years ago. Mojang and Nintendo had plans to include Steve back in Smash 4 but the plans fell through, so it fell on Ultimate.
I am seriously hoping that at some point soon, DoomSlayer gets added. Both of the new Doom games are on the switch, and I bet he would be really easy and fun to implement
Even as one of the three people who genuinely likes both fates and Corrin as a character... yeah, I could go without them being in smash. So yes, even people who like Fates think Corrin was a bad inclusion
I also really REALLY like fire emblem fates, but I understand that it is very controversial in the west and do see where lots of people are coming from. Even though Corrin is a very fun character to play as.
Honestly, "too many sword fighters" isn't a Smash bros issue, its a Fire emblem issue because Every single protagonist has a Sword, so Fire emblem needs a protagonist that is a Pure Axe or spear user
Ephraim in Sacred stones was a spear using protagonist, and Hector was an axe user main (although he can use a sword later) so it’s not that it doesn’t happen but it’s really rare when it shouldn’t be.
Smash is about bringing beloved characters together to see who comes out on top... Nobody knew Corrin when he/she were revealed and many FE3H fans preferred their house leader over Byleth. Sword user or not, I think it's important to understand the fans. Despite how loud the crying was for Byleth's reveal, it wasn't as bad as when Corrin happened because a lot of fans got to enjoy and appreciate FE3H by that time so at least we appreciated the stage and music if not the fighter themselves.
If Azura was in smash the backlash wouldn’t have been that bad. She was the best character from the game by far and her spear + singing + water + dancing would have made her unique
@@finn488 they wanted a rep. My point is that Azura was a better choice. Better move set, more original, an additional female character, and a more distinctive design.
Hell yeah! Awesome gameplay, can turn into a Dragon, what's not to like? Just don't ever learn more than the setup and broad strokes of Fates and you're good to go!
When I first got Smash I felt super weird for maining Corrin at the start. Eventually I moved on to Bowser and Mewtwo weirdly, but there was a period where I played Corrin a lot and just found it ironic.
"Corrin is the Shrek the Third to Byleth's Forever After." In story? absolutely. But Conquest legit has one of the best gameplays out of all fire emblem games, and it makes me sad that gameplay style probably won't comeback due to its poor reception of a story ;-;. (which is kinda unfair, because I heard the story concept had like, 500 pages for each game, but when the game writers got a hold of it... things didn't go as nicely)
I agree. The map design is truly unique and the inclusion of the Dragon Veins adds more strategy to the game. Awakening’s gameplay was easy to abuse and cheese through the game while Conquest fixed many of the issues that plagued Awakening’s gameplay. The real reason Fates is a tragedy is that there is a fantastic story hidden beneath the layers of mediocrity and DLC.
Conquest was a lot of fun when I played it a few years after I played the other two. Great challenge and map design. A tier game gameplay wise. However, I hate that your own weapons debuff you. And Conquest’s final boss is an insane difficulty spike in an already difficult game.

@@k0metz590 Including Rex would make them more faithful to the original game, but they still managed to faithfully portray Pyra and Mythra's relationship. That combined with using the Blade Specials as the Specials (har har) without Rex in the way I just think is a more interesting way to play them.
Being a Fates fan is rough ;-; That said I can agree with most of this video. I do think Corrin does a good job of implementing a Manakete into a working Smash moveset since they use a weapon and can *partially* become a dragon unlike say Tiki who is either a little unarmed girl or a giant dragon with no in-between.
I agree. I think Corrin would be a decently accepted character if they hadn't been timed terribly. Because Corrin's actually in a similar position to another fighter- Incineroar. Both are generally disliked by their communities (Incineroar for his subjectively bad design, and being annoying in competitive play, and Corrin because of his extremely annoyingly stupid decisions in the story), and also debuted in games which many people think are inferior to previous titles in the series. But incineroar is widely accepted, while Corrin is widely hated. Why? Because Incineroar was not one of four DLC, and people don't associate him with taking the spot of a character they wanted. Same thing with Byleth. People see Corrin and Byleth, and many think "but it could have been so much BETTER if Crash/Geno/Sora/ another highly requested character had been added," because the DLC have a finite number to them. We had no idea how many baseline newcomers there would be, so I think Corrin being baseline Ultimate wouldn't be seen with nearly the same negativity. But yes, as a Corrin main I agree his moveset is very interesting. I do wish he was a stance changer though, it would be SO cool if you could switch between a human form moveset and a dragon form moveset.
You know what. More power to you. If you and many others can find mostly positive aspects in something most others see as negative, I say that's good on you. I personally don't like Corrin's inclusion very much at all, but that's just my opinion and as I would like my opinion to be respected, I will respect yours as well.

Fire Emblem isn't even remotely important or popular in Japan.

I mostly hate him for how gullible he was in Fire Emblem Fates. I've only been able to stomach the Birthright path and he straight up takes in someone who tried to kill him and survived, for the most part, by the leniency of his enemies. I've had that on my chest the past two years and I'm finally glad I got an excuse to say it.
@@FortunateSon-mo9zi Oh yeah, and the worst part about Corrin is that he's the avatar. He's supposed to be YOU. You bought a WAR game, but the avatar is this treehugging weenie. I just couldn't relate to him at all. Robin made sense as an avatar cause he's the tactician. So does Byleth cause he's the teacher, raising his units just like you are.
@@EpicEverz As an enthusiast of Medieval history, I have rarely ever seen a leader as naive and lenient as Corrin last long in wars. Then you stumble upon a destroyed and decaying village where everyone that was once there is either a monster or a pile of ashes.
You’re about to continue until you spot a little boy who is alone in this desolate land who asks you to take him with your group. He has no recollection as to what happened here and insists you take him with you.
What do you do?
A) Stay away from him as it is most likely a trap
B) Question him further
C) Take him to a safer location but under careful watch and security in case of the odd chance that he is friendly or can help you
Or D) All of the above
If you chose any of those you must not be Corrin. What the genius tactician Corrin decides to do, is to take him with your group and venture further into enemy territory with this kid literally riding on your back.

Like they say “I win!” And “Good.” when they win they have no character to speak of
For crying out loud, the silent protagonist has better personality than the Corn.
that's not a problem unique to corrin. most of the fire emblem reps have almost no personality. marth is like corrin if their story and character arc were actually well-written, roy is just a retread of marth (he doesn't have any of the same hotheaded personality traits he has in smash), robin is a self-insert, so that pretty much automatically damages their character since they have to be as relatable as possible, and byleth's total lack of characterization is literally a plotpoint in three houses. hell, i'd argue corrin's lack of character is more faithful to their original game than roy. people only like roy because sakurai gave him a personality, something he did not have in FE6. at least in smash, corrin is just bland and not actively hateable like they are in fates.
Corrin looks and has the personality of a rice cake
I also hate Corrin for his stupid desicions in Fire Emblem Fates and how he mostly survives due to intervention from his family or the complacency of his enemies.

Edit: I haven't played FE: Fates since its last DLC came out, so everything in the comments is valid criticism; there's some good stuff in there
Byleth is overhated.
I love Byleth, but they aren't perfect, at all, but some things about them kind of fly over people's heads. the Reason for fate's sloppy story, is because the writers where trying to achieve too much with not enough time.

At the end of the day, a lot of it is a lack of vision of the bigger picture. You know, "if I don't know it then the characters sucks and no one wanted that"
Well remember that Nintendo themselves picked all these fighters.
@@bet3240 Well you're also forgetting that insertions like Steve were already planned years ago. Mojang and Nintendo had plans to include Steve back in Smash 4 but the plans fell through, so it fell on Ultimate.
Oscar Santos this theory is especially valid when considering that Banjo & Kazooie and Steve received little to no hate.
I am seriously hoping that at some point soon, DoomSlayer gets added. Both of the new Doom games are on the switch, and I bet he would be really easy and fun to implement

@@deet917 also edelgard and dimitri (they can use swords however it's a minor weapon talent as opposed to their majors)
Which... would probably play similarly in smash
@@zaidhernandez4601 Lol imagine they brought in Hector from FE only to make him a clone of Ike by instead of a sword, he's using an axe... 🤣🤣🤣
It feels like Byleth, Min Min, and Pythra would’ve been base game additions if the game came out later. And honestly I’m fine with it
If Azura was in smash the backlash wouldn’t have been that bad. She was the best character from the game by far and her spear + singing + water + dancing would have made her unique
or they could have just not added more fire emblem to begin with
@@finn488 they wanted a rep. My point is that Azura was a better choice. Better move set, more original, an additional female character, and a more distinctive design.
I so wish there was a spear fighter
I mean, Corrin is rather unique. She's one of the few FE characters that feels distinguishable even among casuals.
Why did I read this as Azula, and why would that actually be fire tho

Hell yeah! Awesome gameplay, can turn into a Dragon, what's not to like? Just don't ever learn more than the setup and broad strokes of Fates and you're good to go!
I didn’t even play Fates but Corrin is so fun to play! I love his/her specials and his/her dragon transformation.
_You Ignoramus_ 🤣
When I first got Smash I felt super weird for maining Corrin at the start. Eventually I moved on to Bowser and Mewtwo weirdly, but there was a period where I played Corrin a lot and just found it ironic.
Yeah hate the char but dragons are key to the entire franchise and we needed at least a lord with a dragonstone
"Corrin is the Shrek the Third to Byleth's Forever After."
In story?
I got soft locked in conquest

Mine too, and I FINALLY figured out how echo fighters work.
Being a Fates fan is rough ;-;
That said I can agree with most of this video.
@@JacobPDeIiNoNi
Incineroar is liked for other reasons which I will not go into, but let's just say he's got more than one thing going for him.
You know what. More power to you. If you and many others can find mostly positive aspects in something most others see as negative, I say that's good on you. I personally don't like Corrin's inclusion very much at all, but that's just my opinion and as I would like my opinion to be respected, I will respect yours as well.
Yes, it is hard being a fan of things that are bad.

Nintendo will never represent Crash Bandicoot they will never forgive him for dissing them outside their parking lot
Or if they ad him to smash he will just spin around in all of his moves just like sonic

@@majorhoolahan I always thought they’d just make all of moves spin related, kinda like what they did with sonic

My guy really didn’t ask for Morshu as a Zelda rep
At least corrin is representing dragons wich are a huge part in the franchise them having also a dragonstone
Yeah but then they added Tiki as an Assist trophy
I always thought that it would be so cool to have an Assassin's Creed character like Ezio Auditore or Edward Kenway being added, but instead we got a red-eyed albino that nobody outside the Fire Emblem community would even knew existed.
Sakurai would have made Corrin much more interesting by allowing them to transform by pressing down+B ...
They also represent the biggest Mary Sue and worst story of Fire Emblem...so that's another achievement...I guess? Also we have Tiki now?
We deserve a better transforming Manakete character. I'll take anyone. Tiki, Nagi, Bantu, Xane (not really a dragon shifter but he'd be a really cool concept) Idunn, Ninian, Nils, Fae, Myrrh, Kurthnaga, DHEGINSEA would be badass, Nowi, etc. Hell, throw in a laguz/beaststone user if you don't feel like adding a dragon.
