That’s what I thought. When I lived in the States and tried to mimic their accent I realised just how lazy Australian is. We don’t move anything unless it’s insanely ness.
I agree. We are a laid back bunch! Also, it's naturally in our accent for us to drop the jaw when saying the word "blame". It sort of sounds like "blayme".
Matt is an all rounder: remarkable singer, incredible songwriter and brilliant musician. His recorded versions are more polished, but he loves playing with dynamics.
I CLICKED ON THIS SO QUICKLY. I've been waiting for you to react to Matt Corby (and this song in particular) since I discovered your channel back in 1994 or wtvr. AHH.
Love that my fellow Aussie is now being recognised more and more worldwide after years of keeping him to ourselves. He is such a phenomenal vocalist. Every Matt Corby fan will know what I mean when I say that the reason he's so underappreciated by many is that his music often feels so personal to the listener, that it's almost like an invasion of privacy to share him with someone else.
As soon as I saw Matt Corby I had to click. He is such an incredibly gifted vocalist. His tone is beautiful. If you’ve not seen it yet, you should check out his performance of Miracle Love at Manchester cathedral. It’s pure magic.
Since you are already covering Aussie artists who are singing in the "Like A Version" studio at Triple J radio station, would you consider reacting the cover the DMA's did of Cher's "Believe"? Super curious to hear what you think of the singer's technique, especially considering he is chewing gum while singing! Would also love to hear a reaction of some of the other Aussie Like A Version/Triple J studio artists (especially Gang Of Youths)
I’m so excited for you to finally react to him! Please please please listen to Matt Corby’s cover of “Chains” for Like A Version, it’s absolutely phenomenal, and what I always think of whenever someone calls the voice an instrument
If you do more Aussie artists you should react to Dave Leaupepe from Gang of Youths! He’s incredible and wasn’t classically trained so I think you’d have some good observations about his vocal choices
Hi Sam I just stumbled onto your channel and watched this reaction. I'm an Aussie, I don't know if you know many Australian "Iconic" artists but I think you would get a thrill out of listening to a lot of them. Two great performances in particular are, first "Jimmy Barnes & John Farnham, When Something Is Wrong With My Baby" These two can sing with grit for ever then swing to sweet sounding melodies like its nothing. Second great performance is "lan Moss Performs Georgia Live from the basement studio" I really think everyone would get chills if they listen to them.
"You can't build on yourself if you're just stopping yourself every time", I loved this whole commentary on emotional involvement and allowing vocal imperfections to serve the story. I NEED to get this through my head lol.
Yes Indeed! One song that i absolutely love by him is "Resolution". I've watched it over 1000 times. He is one talented soulful singer, & drop dead gorgeous! 🤪
"You can't build on yourself if you're just stopping yourself every time" - Sam Johnson ~ 2021 Well......Isn't that just something we can all learn from!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so fricken happy Sam reacted to Matt Corby! He is such an amazing story teller. This is one of my favourite songs ever. And I 100% love it when Sam just digs what he is reacting to!
I had forgot about this performance by Matt Corby. Loved this video so much, not just for your commentary and love for his voice, but for reminding me of just how talented Matt was. About to go binge watch his performances for the first time in years, thanks!
matt corby is an icon in australia, an absolute angel. i’ve seen him live 5 times and he blows me away every time. so emotional and such a broad range of vocal talent. obsessed 💖
Aussie Aussie Aussie! I’d so love if you’d react to John Farnham, he’s an iconic Australian singer who I truly believe is one of the best vocalists of our time.
100% - I'd love to see Sams opinion on John Farnham. Something like You're The Voice is such an iconic song with SUCH an amazing message! It gets me every time!
I was so impressed with his performance for the bushfire fund-raiser concert early last year. I had never heard him live before and considering his age I didn't have high expectations, but he absolutely blew me away
Love all of your analyzing/commentary you are doing.I really think you are most genuine, kind and helpful voice teacher on youtube.Thank you for helping a non singer appreciate and respect music and singers more.
This is AWESOME! I haven't heard him before, but he goes into high tones and then drops low again in a way which reminds me of Sturle Dagsland, and I *must* listen to him more!! Full on goosebumps over here.
Please more Matt Corby. Nobody reacts to him except for this one song and he is so exceptional. He has so many colors and flavors and is my favorite singer but so unknown. Please react to more.
*Goosebump!* 🤗 As usual i love how you explained every detail on how singing technique worked and it also helps other people singing when they watched your videos
I believe Matt, with his talents and voice control, had fun playing with this version, showing his range in a very controlled and calm way. Like if he needed to go up a gear, no problem. I just enjoy the casual vibe to this acoustic set, delivered with style.
I’ve been a fan of Corby since I was 17 years old and heard resolution on Breaking Amish. Haha Singing his songs is what helped me unlock my vibrato. 8 years later and I still take every opportunity to share his music with anyone who will listen. He deserves all the love, support and success in the world!
Oh man, I just love your little motivational speeches in between the analysis. The part about experiencing telling a story is so true. It was very good timing for me to hear this today since I was writing a song that came straight from the heart but for some reason I just didn't like the sound of my voice today. But now I wanna get back at it. So thanks a lot, for another great video and for the inspiration! The fact that I've been talking about this for so long shows how much I actually appreciate it, especially because I've been crushing on Matt Corby for almost 10 years now so ohhh myyy it's good to see him on your channel!! It's time for me to stop talking and start singing again lol, thanks again and I'm looking forward to the next video!🔥
I was driving when this song aired live on the radio and had to pull over to listen. When Matt finished the song the presenters said they were getting a lot of msgs from people driving having to pull over.
"Sam will probably like it" is my new motivation for when I do weird things singing alone in my car and I suddenly become self conscious about it even though no one else is around :D
Ahh FINALLY! I've literally been waiting YEARS for Sam to do an analysis on Matt Corby 😆👏👏👏👏 so excited to hear his opinion. I bloody LOVE Matt's voice!
You need to react to more Matt. The man is so singular and unknown. Such a hidden gem. Id recommend "Monday", "chains", "Miracle Love", "All Fired Up", "Made of stone", "Trick of the light", "Resolution" etc. All have amazing live/live studio versions. There are far too few reactions to this amazing talent who should be appreciated much more.
What an awesome reaction/analysis. Matt is a an awesome singer not afraid to commit to the performance. I agree, it's the voice breaking that makes a performance brilliant.
One thing you have to understand about Matt Corby is that this song has an amazingly huge emotional connection to him. Those slight imperfections and him singing quietly and louder in other places is to just build that emotion better for the audience so they can feel how he feels.
Matt Corby is my favorite solo artist. Period. Went to his last concert in Oslo a few years back and I had goosebumps the entire time. He sounds even better live than on record
Hey Sam! I'm a big fan of Matt Corby, so glad you finally had him on your channel! I would recommend listening to his live recording of "Lay You Down / Song For" - it's absolutely incredible and one of my most listened to songs on Spotify. I think you'll love it, especially with the way he uses different "colours" through the song as you described he does so well. Matt Corby is also Australian which may have a lot to do with his pronunciations - eg lack of jaw movement, the pronunciation of the word "blame". There's another Australian singer who sings for the band Gang Of Youths who has a similar style and you can HEAR in his voice how much his jaw and mouth in general is just not moving. But still sounds incredible. I would recommend the song "The Deepest of Sighs, the Frankest of Shadows" to hear this really well. Thanks so much for this upload!
Love it Sam. Keep doin what you are doing. Just needed to say that. First time I heard this song was on Australia's got talent. Some lady absolutely nailed this song. You reminded me of that performance. Thanks for keeping us company in isolation. :)
Cooee! is a shout originated in Australia to attract attention, find missing people, or indicate one's own location. When done correctly-loudly and shrilly-a call of "cooee" can carry over a considerable distance. The distance one's cooee call travels can be a matter of competitive pride. It is also known as a call of help, which can blend in with different natural sounds in the bush. The word "cooee" originates from the Dharug language of Aboriginal Australians in the Sydney area. It means "come here" and has now become widely used in Australia as a call over distances. [Coee's are a specific sound and meaning which really adds to the song]
Ey bro, love you enough to accept any ads but omg that background music was the stuff of those nightmares that go from perfect harmony to plane crash in six seconds.
Jimmy Barnes is a great candidate! His vocal technique is a total enigma.... The best in the world don't know how he does it! It would be perfectly fascinating to see what people thought of Barnsy's pipes.... And I don't even like him, not at all!
“not moving the mouth too much” that’s just the australian accent tbh
That’s what I thought. When I lived in the States and tried to mimic their accent I realised just how lazy Australian is. We don’t move anything unless it’s insanely ness.
I agree. We are a laid back bunch! Also, it's naturally in our accent for us to drop the jaw when saying the word "blame". It sort of sounds like "blayme".
Hahaha yep!
😁 true!!
That was my first thought also.
As an add on. The flies make us talk with closed mouths 😂
Every single Aussie: SLAMS PLAY BUTTON
Oh good.... it’s not just me! 🤣
Fact. 🇦🇺
And some kiwis 🤣
Yeah the mates
🤣🤣🤣
Matt corby is a gift to our planet
He didn't even have an album, and that song won an ARIA Music Award for "Song of the Year" (2011). He's incredible.
As an Aussie, hearing that JJJ drum Like a Version intro ... 👌
Matt is an all rounder: remarkable singer, incredible songwriter and brilliant musician. His recorded versions are more polished, but he loves playing with dynamics.
Got to see him perform live when he toured Telluric. Great performance and the whole band was on point.
I CLICKED ON THIS SO QUICKLY. I've been waiting for you to react to Matt Corby (and this song in particular) since I discovered your channel back in 1994 or wtvr.
AHH.

Oof as an Aussie that saw Matt Corby on Aus idol in early 2000s, this was unexpected but cool
Love that my fellow Aussie is now being recognised more and more worldwide after years of keeping him to ourselves. He is such a phenomenal vocalist. Yes! Gang of Youths’ cover of Blood on “Like a Version” is perfection 👌
Blood is outstanding.
Oh that Believe cover is GREAT!
Would love him to react to all the ‘Like a Version’ covers
Yes!!!
Yes, Tommy from DMAs is an amazing singer
I’m so excited for you to finally react to him! Please please please listen to Matt Corby’s cover of “Chains” for Like A Version, it’s absolutely phenomenal, and what I always think of whenever someone calls the voice an instrument
Triple j like a version sessions are so good! This song made top 3 in the 2011 hottest 100 countdown. Gotye was number 1 and The Black Keys number 2
I agree, an absolute treasure trove!
If you do more Aussie artists you should react to Dave Leaupepe from Gang of Youths! He’s incredible and wasn’t classically trained so I think you’d have some good observations about his vocal choices
Totally agree! Incredible!
The deepest of sighs the frankest of shadows ,like version jjj ,awesome!!
This is probably my favourite Like A Version ever made. It’s so raw and powerful. I love it!
Hands down my fave Like a Version too 👌
The cover of brother by thundamentals is epic too

"You can't build on yourself if you're just stopping yourself every time", I loved this whole commentary on emotional involvement and allowing vocal imperfections to serve the story. I NEED to get this through my head lol.
SAM! OHMYGOSH I am SO happy that you reacted to this!! This is such an amazing performance from Matt ❤️
Yes yes YES!!! OMG, this is one of my favourite songs/versions by Matt! What an amazing voice. So nice to see you enjoying it

Well......Isn't that just something we can all learn from!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm so fricken happy Sam reacted to Matt Corby! He is such an amazing story teller. This is one of my favourite songs ever. And I 100% love it when Sam just digs what he is reacting to!

I’ve been asking for it for about six months though.
Bridge Over Troubled Water - John Farnham is amazing
Farnsey
100% - I'd love to see Sams opinion on John Farnham. Something like You're The Voice is such an iconic song with SUCH an amazing message! It gets me every time!
I was so impressed with his performance for the bushfire fund-raiser concert early last year. I had never heard him live before and considering his age I didn't have high expectations, but he absolutely blew me away
Me trying to figure out if he’s not moving his mouth as a stylistic choice or because like me he’s Australian 😂
I really like him, thanks for showing this talent to us!

Exactly. We love the imperfections.

You are so informed and awesome. Great insight.

I remember loving this song when it got big in nz 2012/2013... must listen to more Matt 😻
Awesome. How about Guy Sebastian - Linger (acoustic)?
And cover of LDRU - Keeping Score (with Paces !!
Matty boy, Absolute hidden treasure this bloke. Thanks so much for giving this clip time Sam
Ahh I love Matt Corby!! Please react to him singing Miracle Love live, it´s gorgeous!
truly love that you reviewed matt, he so incredible and a national treasure
Not sure if you know but he started on Australian Idol as a really young teen. Then I guess found himself and his sound and matured. He is awesome.
I will definitely remember to keep singing even when I don't make a sound I was expecting to make. Thanks Sam😊
MORE MATT CORBY! please.
Matt Corby is my favorite solo artist. Period. Went to his last concert in Oslo a few years back and I had goosebumps the entire time. He sounds even better live than on record
I went to a show he did in someone’s garden years ago. it was amazing, there was only about 40 people there.
Hey Sam! I'm a big fan of Matt Corby, so glad you finally had him on your channel!

Brilliant. Great breakdown bro. Subbed!
When I first heard the stripped back version 7 years ago, my jaw hit the floor.
Loved this! Would love to see you react to more Australian artists!
Love it Sam. Keep doin what you are doing. Just needed to say that.
First time I heard this song was on Australia's got talent. Some lady absolutely nailed this song. You reminded me of that performance.
Thanks for keeping us company in isolation. :)

Ey bro, love you enough to accept any ads but omg that background music was the stuff of those nightmares that go from perfect harmony to plane crash in six seconds.
Yes! I enjoyed this greatly. I really think you'd have an awesome time with "Miracle Love" (live) as well. Matt Corby is a beast.
Aaaaaaaaah yes Sam! I never thought i'd see you go through a Corbs video!
13:15 I appreciate you! I was feeling a third party cringe for him as a reflex, and you saying it was good and ok - it made me feel better.
Matt Corby has been one of my favorite artist for year now. He deserves the recognition.
Saw Matt open for Ben Harper here in New Zealand last February. He was amazing!
So glad you finally found this performance
That was great, super interesting. Thanks man.
Check out current Aussie band "The Teskey Brothers"
Yes, he is exceptional and love seeing you enjoy it so much 🥰
I put this performance up there with Nirvana's "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?". Pure, powerful emotion.
You must react to more Matt Corby he is so special. Please check out some more. I love "Miracle Love" but you can't go wrong.
Would the Australians here agree that he is channelling some Jimmy Barnes growl?
Jimmy Barnes is a great candidate! His vocal technique is a total enigma.... The best in the world don't know how he does it! It would be perfectly fascinating to see what people thought of Barnsy's pipes.... And I don't even like him, not at all!
Omg im so happy ! Its one of my fav song!
I’m so happy that you loved the fabby Matt Corby. He’s truly amazing. 🥰
Australia has a lot of amazing artists
