He may not have been professionally trained in the beginning, but he definitely was trained. And by now he probably has received professional training. He is very talented, but don't buy into the trap that this guy is only good because of "God gifted talent." Everybody who is good at anything has had a lot of practice. Just as a snippet of his history, he did go to college for music, but dropped out in the first year. However, he did continue to sing for the college, chorus for a few years. I'm sure he was already a decent singer at this point, but he was part of a professional singing program.

Hozier is flawless. His music helped me get through losing my mother while pregnant and helped through my post-partum depression. My baby girl who is now one year old, even loves his music and bobbing her head along to his music . I owe Hozier so much. Such a talented person.

A while ago I saw an article about "the pop punk accent," how a lot of pop punk and emo singers sound kind of pinched and Midwestern despite mostly being from SoCal and Florida. Linguists were confused by it and chalked it up to a quirky genre convention. But after watching so many of your videos, I started thinking that it's actually probably an intentional choice and a tool to help those guys sing in the kind of high range that emo vocals often use. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this!
I think that makes a lot of sense. The accent you sing with does most of the work in singing for you, so if they all have a sound that they are after and that sound just so happens to correspond to the Midwest it could get mistaken as the cause not an effect. It's similar to how most pop singers use similar vowels even if they have a strong regional accent. Singlish.
Yeah, I think it’s a good description: pinched. I also describe these type of male pop singers is whiny and on the verge of crying. It’s a style that is getting tiresome.
It definitely helps! Us Irish pronounce vowels differently so the UH in the vowels help, especially since he is from Wicklow, the accent and pronunciation is definitely something that helps, as it's slightly different to other counties in Ireland, and tbh it's beautiful

Well Hozier is a baritone so around the D4 - G4 area is a very belt intensive area for him. An operatic baritone doesn't go above a G. He's clearly very technically skilled to do it with such ease and support

And i remembered you mentioned how distortion could be used healthily if it was controlled. So i showed him an example of her clean belts and he gave me 2 bonus points because i proved him wrong. I might be biased here, but I’ve watched a few vocal couches’ reactions/analysis, and I just keep coming back to you. The joy your face shows while watching a talented artist perform brings something special to the analysis, leave alone that you’re very professional but still fun, and so very into explaining what’s happening, how it works, why it works. Just… never change. You’re amazing.
I suspect that weird smile-prep was a version of what my opera professor used to have us do, “breathing into the correct placement.” When you were starting low and planning to go high without time to really prep in between, she’d have us take the breath that started the phrase in through the mouth/jaw shape we’d use when we were hitting the note. I don’t know why it worked, but it did. I am astounded at how he can balance head and chest voice so seamlessly.
I love watching you mimic facial expressions. It makes me smile every time you do it! Also the backing singers and the band sound amazing. It just blended so smoothly. I saw him in NYC this last summer, and he has this voice... Ugh it's just beautiful. The whole concert and experience was amazing.

He’s just so talented, he knows what he’s doing more than I’ve ever seen anyone else do. He just makes it seem effortless because he is making those preparations. Sam -- "No masters or kings," I think that part is usually sung higher and he was prepping for that but sung it down last minute but it definitely is an anchoring thing either way.
Very good point. Maybe he felt it would be too strained to sustain it at the higher pitch, so he reverted to the lower one after kind of testing the waters. It’s better to shift it up and not mess up. 😅 Fewer people to note the switch than would note strain or a mistake.

I think that Hozier's at his best when he's belting - even though he's a baritone (apparently) he can access his higher range so effortlessly. That being said, he's improved so much as a singer between albums! I think touring was great for his voice, which is contrary to so many singers. If you could react to one of his live performances of "Movement" or "Nina Cried Power," that would be fantastic! Hozier is probably the singer that inspires me the most as a baritone who's trying (and failing) to improve my range.

I’m also a fan of Rebecca; she kind of... lets herself get caught up in the stuff she really likes, and tries to describe what exactly that X Factor is that made her so impressed. But I’ve got to say, I think Sam’s probably my favorite overall. He’s so well rounded, and he usually has a few notes the others I watch miss. Like the sort of weird smile/grimace thing to prep or brace. His review of Nothing But Thieves was great as well. He always has interesting notes about what he covers.
I found your series randomly this morning and have been binge-watching. Fascinating to learn the nuances and logistics of singing, and I really enjoy your analyses of the performances (especially the 'bad' singers on shows) and that, while the sound may be unpleasant, most have good qualities that can be nurtured into something decent. I absolutely love your videos. "Take me to church" is actually the song I sing the most when I want to experiment with my own voice, and your tips/notes are definitely what started me on really realizing/noticing what felt right, what sounded better, and just overall better technique. Thank you!
I'm always curious about the differences between amplified and unplugged singing. Is he singing exactly as he would into a mic, or is there a difference? Is he increasing volume? Changing breathing?
@@thetalkingnerdz5347 hmm well what I'm thinking about is the fact that humans sang for thousands of years without mic, often trying to project to large groups of people, so producing high volume and sounds that carry was valuable. And now it seems that singers are on average singing quieter and quieter and speaking or even whispering into the mic. So that's the most refreshing aspect of this performance to me, and there's always a magic to hearing unamplified performances, as in a...church.
Definitely a change in volume for sure! When you are performing without a mic, you have to project your voice! Which means a lot more practiced breath support so that it sounds just as good!
Also as others have noted in here it's all about projection. As a novice there's a good number of songs I can sing pretty well quietly but if I start trying to project it I notice I've got to change how I sing everything and think through how I want it to sound more. But it allows for all that high/low emphasis to happen naturally.

I might be biased here, but I’ve watched a few vocal couches’ reactions/analysis, and I just keep coming back to you. The joy your face shows while watching a talented artist perform brings something special to the analysis, leave alone that you’re very professional but still fun, and so very into explaining what’s happening, how it works, why it works.

I suspect that weird smile-prep was a version of what my opera professor used to have us do, “breathing into the correct placement.” When you were starting low and planning to go high without time to really prep in between, she’d have us take the breath that started the phrase in through the mouth/jaw shape we’d use when we were hitting the note. I don’t know why it worked, but it did. I am astounded at how he can balance head and chest voice so seamlessly.

I’ve seen various reactions to this performance, and it’s great to see Hozier getting credit for his control and, well, mastery of his voice. But you seem to catch these little technical things and details that sort of slip through the cracks for others. His vowel sound on “dog” and “sharpen” and “course” are so interesting to me. I cover this song (transposed up a half tone) and I kind of almost unconsciously use those same vowel sounds and it just makes the song.

Sam -- "No masters or kings," I think that part is usually sung higher and he was prepping for that but sung it down last minute but it definitely is an anchoring thing either way.
Very good point. Maybe he felt it would be too strained to sustain it at the higher pitch, so he reverted to the lower one after kind of testing the waters. It’s better to shift it up and not mess up. 😅 Fewer people to note the switch than would note strain or a mistake.

I think that Hozier's at his best when he's belting - even though he's a baritone (apparently) he can access his higher range so effortlessly.
That being said, he's improved so much as a singer between albums! I think touring was great for his voice, which is contrary to so many singers. If you could react to one of his live performances of "Movement" or "Nina Cried Power," that would be fantastic! Hozier is probably the singer that inspires me the most as a baritone who's trying (and failing) to improve my range.
He's Not Apparently a baritone. He is one, and a damn strong one at that. Tenors, do not, get that low.

I’d love to see the juxtaposition between when she’s dancing and when she isn’t and the decision each artist makes in determining when it’s necessary to have their full breath to sing. That would be another interesting aspect to bring up.

I’m also a fan of Rebecca; she kind of... lets herself get caught up in the stuff she really likes, and tries to describe what exactly that X Factor is that made her so impressed. But I’ve got to say, I think Sam’s probably my favorite overall. He’s so well rounded, and he usually has a few notes the others I watch miss. Like the sort of weird smile/grimace thing to prep or brace. His review of Nothing But Thieves was great as well. He always has interesting notes about what he covers.
I think the reason he sounds the way he does is because he's irish. And he speaks similarly to how he sings.

Fascinating to learn the nuances and logistics of singing, and I really enjoy your analyses of the performances (especially the 'bad' singers on shows) and that, while the sound may be unpleasant, most have good qualities that can be nurtured into something decent. Very uplifting to a 'non-singer' like myself, though I am a huge appreciator of vocals. I especially enjoyed your explanation of Hozier (a fave of mine) and his techniques explained. I'm no singer, nor do I know the first thing about singing, but I love hearing people who are knowledgeable in a subject talk passionately about that subject, it's always interesting to see what sorts of things someone who knows what they're doing pays attention to or notices that I, a person with no experience in the field, notice or pay attention to. I absolutely love your videos. "Take me to church" is actually the song I sing the most when I want to experiment with my own voice, and your tips/notes are definitely what started me on really realizing/noticing what felt right, what sounded better, and just overall better technique. Thank you!
I'm always curious about the differences between amplified and unplugged singing. Is he singing exactly as he would into a mic, or is there a difference? Is he increasing volume? Changing breathing?
Proximity to the mic is what makes the most difference
@@thetalkingnerdz5347 hmm well what I'm thinking about is the fact that humans sang for thousands of years without mic, often trying to project to large groups of people, so producing high volume and sounds that carry was valuable. And now it seems that singers are on average singing quieter and quieter and speaking or even whispering into the mic. So that's the most refreshing aspect of this performance to me, and there's always a magic to hearing unamplified performances, as in a...church.
Definitely a change in volume for sure! When you are performing without a mic, you have to project your voice! Which means a lot more practiced breath support so that it sounds just as good!
Also as others have noted in here it's all about projection.
As a novice there's a good number of songs I can sing pretty well quietly but if I start trying to project it I notice I've got to change how I sing everything and think through how I want it to sound more. But it allows for all that high/low emphasis to happen naturally.

Me too... I'd love it if he ventured into metal territory, I'm most interested in his opinion about Dio and Rob Halford for obvious reasons, but honestly there are so many singers with interesting voices and techniques.
