- Is the Tsunami SaltX as good or better than the Van Staal VR75?
In this video, we take a deep look at both reels and see if the cheaper SaltX can dethrone the king of the sealed saltwater spinning reel market.

Been waiting for this compare. Thanks Tailwater.
Of course!
My VS Bail less 200 was used for wetsuiting bass at Montauk Point and now beats ion tarpon in SWFL Love it
I love the videos! Put more out.
Thanks appreciate it! We've got a bunch more in the works! Feel free to recommend some video ideas as well
The VS definitely has a cult following, but then again so does Shimano and Penn. I’ve had a few Tsunami carbon shield rods that I was pleased with but nothing special. If I were looking to spend around the $300 mark I doubt I’d go for Tsunami over something from Daiwa, Shimano, or Penn.
Great video guys!
why over daiwa and shimano?
Thanks man appreciate it!
Cant believe this video is a month old. Saltx already has a huge following down in florida. Got 2 van staals and i can tell you the salt x is an amazing reel fully sealed and super strong. They didnt just find a company to make their reel. Its allegedly designed by some guys in the tsunami team
FYI: Van Staal is pure fishing, a company that makes everything fishing just like tsunami does. Not a fan of either one personally though. Shimano Saragossa is cheaper and better than both of those reels IMO.
Yea, they own tons of brands, but Van Staal is still an independent brand under pure fishing, just like Penn. The Saragosa is killer too
Slower oscillating spool equals better line lay for further casting distances. I have a saltx and after break-in its butter smooth as well as the drag. Best bang for the buck.
Yea for sure! I’ve also heard the faster oscillation like these reels have helps with heavy drag. Supposedly it keeps the line from digging into itself…
@@tailwateroutfittersthat’s exactly why they do it, nothing worse than catching a really nice fish and being pumped then going to chuck out your favorite lure only to have it get about 20 yards and snap off because the line was super dug into the spool, even with the crazy fast occultation the van staal still has way more line capacity so line lay in this case is a moot point..
im looking into a spill way setup i want a medium heavy 7 6 fast action rod what shouldi get im also looking int o a 250max price range reel in a 4000-5000 size for snook anything except a daiwa bg their so heavy my price range on the rod is 150-180 please help me deicde
Hey! I would do a Stradic or Saragosa, or BG MQ, then probably a Bull bay sniper 10-20
Cabo 50, have had one fished it ocean, beach for I think 4 years now and haven't serviced it yet, still smooth the drag just now needs a retouch, its a 5k ish and its light 40+ pounds of drag, right at 220$. great reel, ugly but hey whatever.
ps: i have saltigas and had a stella, i feel the only real difference between them would be the handles on them being better, so just get an after market gomex with a power knob and bamb.
i bought the salt x based off of a Jeff Skinner's review and mine came with a bailless conversion kit
solid review
Thank you!
I HAVE BOTH TSUNAMI REEL IS SMOOTHER 💯 6000 version can be switched to bailess with in box adapters 👌🏾
Did it break in and loosen up? Or did it come out of the box smooth?
@tailwateroutfitters after id say 3 trips out it felt butter soft so it was broken in somewhat all around great bang for the buck
I’m thinking abt getting the 6000 size for tarpon what do you think?
@HaydenOakes you'll love how smooth the reel is I have mines on a 10ft carbon surf rod feels so good
I think VR 50 and Saltx 4000 are almost equal on line capacity. VR75 vs Saltx6000, respectively.
Yea for sure, that would be a more fair comparison for line capacity. I just used those sizes because they’re closer physically in size
They should be coming out with the SaltX 2 very soon. The SaltX2 was in the 2023 ICAST.
It might be my first tsunami item. Specs wise it looks great for the money but time will tell.
@@ShinkiZer0 I like the fact they hired the reel guru from tackle advisors for this new reel
@@InshorePursuitFL right no wonder hes not making his tackle reviews anymore. All my reels bought based on his reviews lol.
@@InshorePursuitFL agree but Scooby left Tsunami in the past year. Still he definitely had to have a good degree of influence on the SaltX II family.
@@rkw221my question is why the reel hasn’t been released yet
Is this the salt x 2 or OG? The new salt x2 is actually amazing especially since who tsunami hired to work on it.
Just the og, we haven’t seen the new one yet
Any more info on the saltx 2 I can't find it anywhere other than some videos on TH-cam. I'm very interested in getting one
Tsunami and van staal both cater for the same set of fishermen the stripe bass guys and to me they are both pretty much the same just the price and drag is different
nice
Van Staal is no longer made in American anymore, not sure the quality is still there, that’s what made them great, I had a VR150, sold it to get a Twin Power 10000 for offshore fishing. If I get back into inshore and surf fishing again, I’ll splurge on a new VS.
That is true, and a popular thing that we hear. However we've not had any issues since production was moved overseas. The Made in America pride is definitely gone, but we don't believe quality has suffered one bit
The salt x can be bailess it comes with the parts and instructions in the box
Shimano Stella
Well, it's a very biased review. There is a quality gap between the reels as much as the price difference. I get that. But, SaltX copied VS? No way. They look quite different.
Not a fan of either but van staal all day. I wouldn't recommend anything Tsunami they are nothing more then a Walmart brand.
Agree 💯
I think Tsunami may have been better off NOT making the reel look like a VS knock-off. I generally like Tsunami and their products, and have some in my arsenal. I would have considered buying the SaltX BUT it looks too similar to the VS. If I want a reel that looks like the VS, I will buy a VS. My two cents. Good comparison review!
Yea I would agree for sure. Some more originality would have been good to see. Thanks!
Ain’t nothing like the real thing..! 🤙😎👍
Where’s the skill in casting a spinning reel..?????
You guys are stuck in spinning reel hell…🤣
You will never get the distance from a spinner as you would with a multiplier reel,.. not ever ..! Yeah,… Van Staal reels are nice but not that kind of money …. It’s like fly rods that cost $1000 … total BS…!
Do the math,… boys !
Naaaaa
@@tailwateroutfitters It’s your money..🤣🤣🤣
If i surf fish alot id definitely get a VS. Other than that Jdm reels for me.i dont like the feeling of meet grinders.
I fish both. I have a diawa lexa that can outcast anyone on the beach. Great for bunker plugs. But spinning reels are always better for casting light weight and jigging for fluke.
Typical VS fanboy.
🤷🏼♂️

Stradic or Saragosa is what I’d go with for the reel! As far as rods, I’d probably go with a Bull bay sniper 10-20
@@tailwateroutfitters any daiwa options?
@@tailwateroutfitters im trying to get them to match
@@Zyl0n_yt a BG MQ would be nice, and it would look great in a sniper
@@tailwateroutfitters what would look good with a stradic fm 500 what rod would match?
