    Very nice job. I’ve done a lot of conversions on my vintage saltwater reels - a Penn 704 greenie, Mitchell 302 saltwater, a Mitchell 306, sand even created a Mitchell 498 out of a 488. I like fishing with PUM set-ups. When I was young back in the 70s my first surf spinner was a Penn 706Z. I’ve kept that reel and love to use it. I’m always interested in these conversions. Great video!

    Nice vid. Thanx.
    Just did mine to bail-less.
    That set screw you showed still having roller arm play movement after being installed is not in all the way. It will screw in more. I resorted to using a very small T5 Torx bit and it worked good at grabbing the allen hole. Its in tight and now there is no play in the roller arm. Rock solid.

    Hey many thanks for the video....one small correction if I may...you mention needing to use pliers to squeeze the reel roller pin threaded end in order to fit...it is actually oriented with a cutout...if you rotate the pin to about 7 o'clock it it click right in. Thanks again.

    thanks for another great video. I have the 4000 saltx and installed the bailess kit last night. Had a little issue with the bail arm screw going into the bailess line roller. it just would not tighten all the way down and now it won't un-screw if I wanted to replace the bail. I tried to call their customer support and got a little run around. the folks down in Florida on the phone didn't know much about the bailess kit and Im waiting for a call back from a manager to see if I can get a replacement kit and bail arm screw. I've used this reel for a full season with the bail and had a few wind knots - more than any other reel I own. Overall not a bad reel but I'm not sure I would buy another one like the 6000. Let's see how their customer service responds. Just curious to see how this reel is holding up out there.

      Mine did too. I dont believe those 2 extra tiny washers have anything to do with the Bail-less conversion.
      They are identical to the one shim washer on the shaft underneath the spool. So maybe they just include those as extras incase anyone wants to shim their spool a little higher on the shaft. Just guessing here as i dont know why anyone would need to do that. 🤔

      Absolutely. Depending on the year I'll devote more time to each fishery. I've landed a pair of 50# stripers on the beach....1 on a boat....about 100 over 30lbs. A couple hundred tuna to 200lbs...some yellows to 120. I have vids of the boat 50, my PB tuna and PB shark already posted. I've worked with manufacturers for surf rods. I've been on around 100 overnight canyon runs and even have been invited to mate on a few boats. Gaffed the Junio IGFA world record bluefin back in 08. Even daytime sworded before it was a thing back in 07. I'm also an admin on the worlds largest saltwater fishing site......I love it. Though I'm not a bottom fisherman. Fluking, Togging, black seabass porgies. Not my cup of tea.

      Think some of the early VS he liked, main thing people have against these right now are the fact they are so new. If these hold up like they should it's gonna be hard to beat for the price. I don't know how the turn over is on the VS repair and maintenance service but at one point many were complaining about the turn around time to have anything done with the reel, but he will probably be able to give a better idea on if that's still been an issue.

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      VS are bullet prof. I had a few bailed vs reels when they first came out. I think my friends have a total of 100 bailess. They aren't anywhere close to the refinement of even a 100$ shimdaiwa. But they can take a beating. The VR's are nice..I've handled some good ones...and a really bad one. I'll post the bad one vid on friday....Dude bought it used...had some issues...sent it to me to see if i had the same problems....long story short...I fixed one area of it. And told him to get his money back.....which he did. My cousin loves his but he's not really using it for it's potential....just wanted a no worry reel that would hold up to weekend warrior stuff and not die an early death due to neglect.

      @TackleAdvisors 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bails are big and bulky...and can be clumsy when in the serious stuff. (i no longer do that after a few close calls) It's easier to cast and start retrieve...less of a motion. No or little chance of line catching the roller like a premature bail closure during the cast. Plugs are pricey.....Sp minnows are 10 bucks.....GRS are 120$....(just to name 1 of the dozen super premium plugs that are regularly fished) So it has it's benefits and it's place

    shitsticks!! I actually tried to put that set screw in and I guess it got a bit cross threaded then the head stripped out...ug...
    I thought I would add that is you have any Penn conventional reels, they include a tool to take them apart. You can use it rather than a flathead screwdriver to remove the bail screws on the Salty 6k. That's what I did because I was too lazy to go grab my larger flathead in the garage. Worked fine though.
    I'm pissed at myself over the setscrew. Yeah I know it really shouldn't matter but dang it, I don't like making mistakes or when something is not 100% right. Hell I couldn't even back the screw out. I could likely get it with pliers or similar but not with the allen wrench and I have micro sizes in them that actually fit the thing. I know what happened was I didn't extend the shaft on my driver to work around the stem. That put the screw at a slight angle which then eventually cross threaded and locked up tight....grrrrrr!!

    But why?

    • @Dan12077
      @Dan12077 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not a necessity, it's more of a preference conversion. A lot of people lose plugs when surfcasting because of the amount of force one puts on each cast to get the plug out as far as possible. There's times when the bail accidentally closes at the end of the follow-thru due to that force, which then results in the line snapping and you losing your $20+ plug. It's sucks when it happens, trust me! lol

    This reel really sucks respectfully
    I just purchased mine 4 days ago. Did about 1.5 hours of casting unfortunately I didn’t catch a fish but I went through hell with this reel. For some reason the line spools like a cone which causes so much wind knots I lost 2 plugs bc of it. I lost so much line when I got home I decided to just spool new line. As I’m retrieving the new line I notice a light grind 😑 I called the tackle shop that sold me this metal junk and they said they can not replace it and I’ll have to exercise my warranty. Like wtf I just purchased this 4 days ago. Now I have to email the service company and see what happens. Avoid this from happening to you and purchase a VAN STAAL. I’m very disappointed with tsunami I love tsunami products I use their plugs, swivels, and rods it the first time I purchase a tsunami reel and it sucks DO NOT BUY
