Good review. Would also love to see you review the Van Staal VR50. The weight of the VR50 is intriguing. Also, the VR series of reels are made in China.

All van staals are made in china. Except older van staals like 10 years ago.

Great review. QUESTION: What is the make/model/brand of the rod rack in the background? I would like to purchase one of those racks for my rods.

    • @Saltstrong

That is a home-made rod rack. But here is a video on how to create your own at home: www.saltstrong.com/articles/diy-rod-rack/

I thought about wanting to get the 4000. How does this compare to the original penn battle 6000 minus the weight? I want to add a reel to my tsunami trophy 2 10ft surf rod. Plan on throwing anything from 1oz-3.5oz lures max. And I like using 30lb braid 90% of the time. And don't plan on throwing anything higher. Leader would be 50-60lb leader. What you think?

Second time out in the surf with the Salt X 6000 and started making grinding noises and locked up during retrieve. Luckily getting my money back. Cast great, very light, great retrieve speeds, so many good features but don’t trust it. I did not submerge it only splashed on in the surf. Others told me to clean and grease after every use by taking off handle and spool and it will perform.

Van Staals are also assembled in China but of higher standards and of better quality. For example, my Van Staal VSB 250 came with German made clutch bearings (made by INA of Germany). The clicker on these SaltX reels breaks really easy. Nothing breaks easy on my VSB by Van Staal.

I just got a new sustain 5000, it's super light weight, drag smooth and tough. But it's a bit small. So I've checked out every reel made, for my bad boy reel , I'm getting a saragosa 5000 I've decided. Has the best features of what I'm looking for, for my spinning combo. For my baitcast, im getting a daiwa prorex 400 and a st croix legend glass rod .Fishing for Big River and lake striped bass.

Just make sure to take the main gear out and inspect for the right end of the shaft being lengthwise grooved when they cut the integral spur gear teeth. It will wear the seal out quickly if you reel right handed.

meh.. i'll stick with my spinfisher SSVI may not be fully sealed, but waterproof enough, just as smooth, more "free spinning" lighter and half the price for a reel just as good.

    This reel really sucks respectfully
I just purchased mine 4 days ago. Did about 1.5 hours of casting unfortunately I didn’t catch a fish but I went through hell with this reel. For some reason the line spools like a cone which causes so much wind knots I lost 2 plugs bc of it. I lost so much line when I got home I decided to just spool new line. As I’m retrieving the new line I notice a light grind 😑 I called the tackle shop that sold me this metal junk and they said they can not replace it and I’ll have to exercise my warranty. Like wtf I just purchased this 4 days ago. Now I have to email the service company and see what happens. Avoid this from happening to you and purchase a VAN STAAL. I’m very disappointed with tsunami I love tsunami products I use their products plugs, swivels, and rods it the first time I purchase a tsunami reel and it sucks DO NOT BUY

300 bucks?? i could buy 15, 20 dollar reels, and maybe drop or ruin 2 a year. And I guarantee it wouldnt last ME 5-7 years! lol I buy walmart crap and catch more fish than morons with hundreds of dollars in equipment! I Caught my PB redfish(48in) in a john boat while dudes in their 50-100 thousand dollar boats watched in jealousy. THE REEL DONT CATCH FISH,,,YOU DO!... IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOURE DOING.
