Even more amazing is how he only has a very short time period from which to gather information from. A lot of people don't realize that the 'wild west' only lasted for about 30 years!
I did genology research on my family tree and found out I'm descended from a guy that was illegitimate and his father was unknown. He was born in 1854 and took his mother's last name. I took a DNA test on family tree DNA and found out my y chromosome was matched to the Robinson family. After realizing the connection I found out a Robinson family lived in the same area at the time! I haven't figured out which one might have been his father. All this was done via the Internet! Even he probably didn't know who his father was!
Josh, us guests residing in the Oregon State Mental Institution would like to thank you for your excellent work. Better than most of the house meds by far!!
ngs from Switzerland! You mention Rudabaugh's name originally been "Rodenbach" which I suspect derived from "Rotenbach" a name that sounds very Swiss to me. So the bandit could very well be one of my fellow countrymen as many of them emigrated to the US or even were sent there for being considered bad apples that the authorities wanted to get rid of cheaply by buying them a one way ticket to America, which was a common practice in 19th century Europe.
I must say I had heard of Dave Rudabaugh but Josh has really done a wonderful job filling us in with the history of this man. Yes, I just saw Dave 's head on the Internet as stated by Josh.
Josh, great show as always. I needed an excuse to not be working for about 30-40 minutes this afternoon! And thanks for giving all due credit to Mr. David G. Thomas, a gentleman I had the pleasure of spending some time with recently. He is the gold standard for including footnotes to primary sources. I recommend your channel and his books regularly!
I don't know about that. Jesse Evans was also someone Billy feared. He was actually afraid that Evens would assassinate him and voiced that fear to Governor Lew Wallace... and for good reason. What makes it more fascinating is Jesse and Billy were friends at one point and ran in the same gang and what's wild about it it is Jesse is probably the very one that shot John Tunstall starting the Lincoln County war. And what makes it even MORE fascinating is Jesse escaped prison and then just DISAPPEARED!!! Literally. He escaped and no one ever heard from him again. Jesse Evans is a FASCINATING story that hardly no one covers and he's all over the Billy the Kid story arch.
Love this page, showed up randomly on my feed one day but very high quality and knowledgeable content, especially for the average/casual viewer. Keep up the great work friend
As always I thoroughly enjoyed this video! You are one of the best story tellers I have ever heard. Your voice would be perfect narrating anything related to the old west and more!
Another great and informative video Josh. I'm so glad I subbed with notifications. Your straight forward, everyman demeanor makes it a real pleasure to watch your content. Your extensive, honest research is, in my opinion, second to none. 👍
Josh, I love your objectivity. You could more easily repeat sensational tales, but you dig in to do the actual history justice. Great job! Edit, the fact that so many others are hungry for objective history gives me hope for the future. I mean that 100%.
I say par, one helluva storyline and as usual, well spoken! You NEED to do a story on Rowdy Joe Lowe out of Newton, Kansas. He was a saloon owner, gun for hire, obnoxious A-hole...😄 He frequented the Delano District on the westside of the Arkansas River in Wichita. This was our saloon and bordello house district in the Wild West days. He was supposedly arrested by Wyatt Earp when he became a short term constable in Wichita while visiting his brother, James. That's all that I know. But, you have the connections to bring this character to life.
Has anyone ever solved the age old mystery, of why every single feller in the 19th Century, had a set of ears, that could have easily doubled as boat sails???
Great video explaining the story, I found this cause I learned I'm allegedly related to Dirty Dave. My grandmother on my Mom side was a Rudabaugh by her maiden name and told stories that one of our ancestors worked with Billy the Kid. Great job on the research!
Excellent episode as always Josh. I have not picked up a copy of David G Thomas book but plan too. Even though it was known as Billy The Kid's gang, was there any evidence that there was an official leader for the group?
Rumour has it that if Dave didn't have such an aversion for washing up, taking a bath every now and then, he never would have been given the name "Dirty Dave".
Thanks again Josh for an unequalled lesson on a time not long ago. At least once a week I find myself engaged in discussion about the west and I always bring up the extravaganza. Well once a week a couple weeks in a row, haha. I do bring up the extravaganza whenever I can to people I like because of excellent work you put into it. I'm a poor soul so unfortunately I'm also a freeloader. I hit like immediately before I forget and always try to leave a comment. I did happen upon a few pieces of silver and would gladly share my find with you if I'm able to find a mailing address. If there is one expect a piece of real money coming your way. It was obtained legally as far as I know. ✌🏻
It's unfair that Billy was the only one charged with murdering sheriff Brady when there was seven other men also shooting at Brady. As a matter of fact Billy hated Billy Matthews and he would have no doubt been shooting at Matthews who survived the encounter
Hoping you can get to some of the lesser know cities. In one of your videos you brought up royal gorgeous which reminded me of home since canyon city is right next to pueblo.
My name is Zeigler. I have relatives in Pennsylvania, who spell it Ziegler. My grandma told me, I have relatives in Kentucky, who spell it Zigler(no "e" at all). So spelling can mean nothing. It's all how the patriarchs spelled the last name at that time...
One thing is for certain about Dave, he was good at escaping from jail! Might be the only facts about him, but atleast he has that. They should have made a comedy about Dave and his wanna be persona!
I heard he was called dirty Dave rudabaugh because he did not like to take a bath and it was said you knew he was coming before you seen him. But is nasty is that seems it wasn't all uncommon back in for men that lived outside or on the trail to not have a lot of baths. Hygiene was a problem back in the day even by people who babe because there was no air conditioner so you sit around in hot climates and sweat all the time. Because of that even the prostitutes must not have been all that appealing.
The posse killed him. If Billy had killed him, the posse would have never left they would have stayed and fought they ran because they knew they had done fucked up
I’m continually amazed at how much you can find out about some relatively obscure dudes from over 100 years ago. Fascinating stuff, thanks Josh 😎👍
Even more amazing is how he only has a very short time period from which to gather information from. A lot of people don't realize that the 'wild west' only lasted for about 30 years!
