Billy the Kid Debunked: The Truth Revealed

  • There is a lot of misinformation about Billy the Kid's death. This is your comprehensive guide to cut through the noise and determine fact from fiction. Thank you to all of the historians whose research I rely upon.
On the night of July 14th, 1881, Sheriff Pat Garrett gunned down Billy the Kid. Or did he? Why is there still so much confusion surrounding the alleged death of William H. Bonney? Is it true that Pat Garrett’s deputies said that he killed the wrong man? Why did Sheriff Garrett bury the body without letting anyone see it? What was he trying to hide? And why was there no photograph taken? If Garrett did kill the Kid, why didn’t he receive the reward? And while we’re asking questions, who was this Billy Barlow character? What’s that all about? And who was Brushy Bill Roberts? Did Brushy have all the same scars as Billy the Kid? And wasn’t there a photo comparison study conducted by the FBI that showed Brushy and Billy were a 93% match? We will discuss all this and more as we finally clear up a few misconceptions concerning one of the greatest history hoaxes of all time! #history #western #wildwest

Closed, of course. It should never have been reopened in the first place. All this crazy speculation does is strip Billy's death of its dignity. Whether one believes he was an outlaw or a freedom fighter, he was indeed just a kid who truly believed he was on the right side of the law. Turning him into Forrest Gump does his memory a huge disservice.

I think that that was very uncharacteristic of Billy the kid. He would not be sneaking around barefoot with a butcher knife in his hand if he saw strangers particularly Anglos.. and to me this is the biggest thing that proves that Billy the kid was not the man that gunned down why in the hell would he go down there with a porch full and a room full of anglos and speaking Spanish.. I will even go further than that that was so uncharacteristic of Billy the kid that even if brushy bill was proven to not be Billy the kid I would still believe he escaped. He had a sixth sense that saved him and Pat Garrett had already gone down the wrong Man twice. Also on their deathbed it was proven that they both deputies said he shot the wrong man. Both men said he shot. A Mexican that was coming to get a slice of beef. And I think the proof of that whether people want to believe it or not is he would never go in there with a group full of angels and speak in Spanish.

I love your videos but in this case you and me are going to disagree Billy the kid would never go up on the porch where they were strangers and speak in Spanish. Delvina Maxwell also said me and the coroner's jury who was all Spanish are mostly all Spanish live at the time and said it was Billy the kid because we wanted him to get away and it worked didn't it. She said the man in the room was absolutely not Billy the kid it was a half breed. She said the corner story the Spaniards talk to the over amongst themselves and said Billy has done so much to help us that now we need to help him. I don't give a damn about the 93% match. Even his own daughter said my father shot the wrong man and to keep himself from getting hung because the man was not wanted he lied and said it was Billy the kid. Where is very very few people that agree that Billy the kid was dead and a ton of them that believed he got away. I'm not talking about historians or modern-day people I'm talking about contemporaries. Both deputy said right off the bat pat you shot the wrong man. It was a Mexican and we would have never allowed him on the porch if it was Billy.finally Pat bully them and the jury in the saying it was Billy the kid. But on their deathbed they most definitely 100% without a doubt said Billy the kid was not shot that night or any other night. That Pat Garrett for the THIRD TIME. YOU KNOW HE HAD A POLICY OF SHOOT FIRST AND ASK QUESTIONS LATER IT BOGGLES MY MIND WHILE PEOPLE JUST AUTOMATICALLY ACCEPT THAT HE KILLED THE KID. I MEAN ACCORDING TO DELVINA MAXWELL THE FIRST WOMAN IN THE ROOM THAT PAT GARRETT AND THE DEPUTIES WERE TOO BUSY RUNNING AND SHE HAD TO GO IN THERE AND MAKE THE IDENTIFICATION. THE MEXICANS LATER SAID THAT PAT GARRETT IN PARTICULAR WAS SCREAMING LIKE A WOMAN. SHE CUSSED THEM FOR COWARDS WHEN THEY WOULD NOT GO IN AND SHE WENT IN HERSELF. THESE ARE THE COWARDS AND THE LIARS THAT PEOPLE BELIEVE SHOT BILLY THE KID. I MEAN JUST LOOK AT HIS BOOK ON BILLY THE KID IT'S A BOOK OF FAIRY TALES. BECAUSE OF THAT BOOK WHICH IS A BOOK PACKED WITH LIES PAT GARRETT PROVES THAT HE IS NOT TRUSTWORTHY YET EVERYONE JUST ACCEPTS THAT HE SHOT BILLY THE KID. HAD HE PUT HIM ON ICE AND WAITED FOR A CAMERA I DON'T CARE HOW FAR AWAY IT WAS HE WOULD HAVE DEFINITELY TAKEN A PICTURE BECAUSE THAT WOULD HAVE PUT HIM NOT ON ME AS A SHERIFF FOR LIFE BUT PROBABLY IN THE GOVERNOR'S OFFICE. PEOPLE REALLY NEED TO LOOK AT IT LOGICALLY HE ALREADY SHOT BILLY THE KID TWICE BEFORE. I MEAN COME ON. I LOVE YOUR STORIES AND VIDEOS BUT ON THIS WE WILL NEVER AGREE. I DON'T SEE HOW ANYONE CAN BELIEVE THAT BILLY THE KID WOULD WANDER AROUND AIMLESSLY AND GET SHOT WITH ANGLOS IN THE AREA AND HE KNEW PAT GARRETT WAS IN THE AREA.

So let's assume Billy the Kid was tanning his skin to pass himself off as a Mexican. Would it not be logical to assume that he spoke Mexican as to not give away his identity. I mean if I'm going through all that trouble to make myself look like a Mexican to keep myself from being picked up by the law and I know how to speak Spanish I would think I would be speaking Spanish every chance I get even if I'm with a group of people that I trust I would think I would be wanting to speak Spanish and every opportunity that I got just to keep people from identifying me.

As one that has been in the funeral profession for 38 years, I can guarantee you, as stated, Garrett would NOT have wanted to travel such a distance with a deceased body in the New Mexico Summer heat...🤢 Would have been a very unpleasant experience to say the least. Besides the bloating...a few other bodily issues would not have provided a quality photo, anyway. So...its understandable as to why the Governor didn't require such identification...and of course, the eyewitnesses made up for the unfortunate, circumstances.

    Josh, I will say this.
I do NOT believe that Brushy Bill was Billy the Kid.
I DO believe that Billy was gunned down by Garrett in 1881.
    However…
I do, wholeheartedly, wish that when Joseph McCarty met Garrett, years after Billy’s death, that Pat told Joseph:
“Look, I shot the wrong man, convinced all in Fort Sumner to pass him off as your brother, met up with Billy later and told him to get his ass to old Mexico and not come back, and he’s still there, and this is where.”
I WISH that would be the real reason why Joseph left amicably and later said it was concluded, and Billy lived a low key life and died surrounded by family.
No lying Brushy Bill, just a former outlaw, given a second chance and taking it, living his life quietly in old Mexico, regaling his brother with stories of his adventures until old man Bonney passed quietly.
    A man can dream.

Zapata, while not as famous in the USA as his contemporary, Pancho Villa, had a very colorful life in his own rite. For clarity, my comment was tounge in cheek, but I am still left wondering if indeed maybe everyone, including Pat, could have conspired to fake his death, so he could start afresh somewhere else. After all, it was only 200 people. & even if some hated him, they would have been rid of him? Although like you said, he was stoopid enough to return. Off topic, but as a bit of a connoisseur for Wild West History and Stories, I f*cking love this channel. Your Content is so engaging and it is never dull, for me at least.
I was never really into the History of the Old West until I played through Red Dead 2. I played Red Dead 1 as a kid but.. I was a kid, I couldn't grasp the story of RDR1 even if I tried, so when I played RDR2, a somewhat romanticized Game set at the tail end of the "Outlaw Era" as an adult back in 2021-ish, I became absolutely fascinated with the real History of those times, which eventually led me to this channel. So, we can thank Rockstar Games for opening me up to this sort of stuff and leading me to this Channel, because I don't regret a second that I sit and listen to these Episodes.
Sidenote: Don't let anyone tell you that Video Games can't be beneficial, because when you have absolute masterpieces of Storytelling like RDR2, a Game so well made that I am almost positive that it led many younger people like me to look into the real history of the times that Game is set into, you lead people down the Rabbit Hole and in the process they LEARN something about REAL History, and that certainly provides some sort of value to society.
    Great stuff!

I personally never bought the whole Brushy Bill story, out of everything that I have ever read on Billy the Kid, i personally have no reason to doubt that things on the night of July 14th 1881 happened any different from what Pat Garrett said, that will probably piss alot of the pro Brushy Believers off but too bad. Out of all of the Wild West era people Billy the Kid story has always been the most interesting to me, not sure why. Sure would have been nice to know what all was said between Pat Garrett and Joseph Antrim when they met.

I live in northern New Mexico just a half mile from the Pecos river in Pecos NM and I've always had a huge interest in Billy the Kid and I've gone back and forth with him being Brushy Bill or being shot by Pat Garrett and no matter what my thinking always comes back to the fact that Garrett did actually kill the Kid. In a way that brings me comfort knowing that Billy rode into the history books here in New Mexico and his bones rest here in New Mexico and no where else. You can take a good look at Brushy Bill and see that he really wasn't Billy the Kid. Great work on bringing common sense and truth to all the conspiracy theories. I’ve always been so fascinated with his history. It’s been years since I’ve researched his history but a “player” Bob Olinger in his history was from Delphi, Indiana…which I lived nearby as well as Indianapolis.
I belonged to the New Mexico Billy the Kid historical club for years….I even have the Billy license plate..pretty cool.
My thoughts on no photo being taken, it was a precaution, I believe there were so many people there that did adore Billy, that Pat and the law thought it would have been a better idea not to flaunt it. It’s my belief that Pat actually respected Billy to some extent.

So Josh, I don't know how you found out about it, but apparently someone leaked a copy of my soon-to-be-published biography, cleverly disguised in the form of an action novel, where I tell about my life of being recruited by the Navy Seals at 14, moving on a few years after to the Green Berets, before joining NASA for a study on the effects on combat in zero gravity and moving on, at age 21, to great success as guitarist and songwriter for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. All this while getting my Superbowl Ring with the Pittsburgh Steelers, inspired by my Dad's career as a catcher for the Yankees. It's true that I am related to Michael Jordan by marriage, and am a silent, part owner of the Chicago Bulls, but no one at the university where I am getting my PhD in molecular science knows about that. (I don't need them hounding me for his autograph!) I don't know what my girl Beyonce is going to think when I tell her we've been outed, but I have to quibble with a couple of points. First of all, my Superbowl win with the Steelers was not 2005, but rather in 1979. You see, like Brushy Bill, I am really about 20 years older than I look. But most importantly, you CANT talk about the rescue of kittens and babies at the orphanage yet. The CIA hasn't declassified that information yet, so shhh! Thanks for your consideration.

The building history wasn't correct and the idea of the photo being taken because it was Charlie Bowdre's wedding- debunked. Randy didn't sell it and he's still trying to. Pat Garrett is buried two miles from my apartment in the Masonic Cemetery in Las Cruces, NM. He was murdered in 1908. Like Billy the Kid, there is some controversy as to who did him in. A grave digger at the Cemetery told me he didn't believe Pat Garrett did kill Billy the kid.

@WildWestExtravaganza Those two grave diggers are dead now and therefore unavailable for further comment. The grave digger at the Masonic Cemetery in Las Cruces is still alive and working a backhoe. Plus, he is willing and able to show you where all prominent stiffs are buried on the grounds. Especially Pat Garrett's, which is otherwise hard to find.

My mother knew him growing up. They lived in Hico, Texas. He came into town once a month and would sit on the sidewalk and tell his tales. All his old friends verified that he was Billy. While he living and tried to get the governor to pardon him. But he refused, saying Pat Garrett’s word couldn’t be disputed 🙄. They forget they used to run together… . No doubt in my mind or anyone who met him.

How and why do people exaggerate their life stories? Maybe my own family experience might help shed some light on this.
My dear uncle would talk about when he was working for Stars and Stripes and was drinking in a bar in Saigon. He said that he could feel the reverberations of a bombing. After he had one drink the explosions shook the table. After two drinks the windows shook. After three drinks the windows cracked. After four drinks the windows shattered and knocked the drinks off the table. At drink five, the bomb went off across the street. Drink six the VC bombed the bar. Drink seven the VC attacked the bar. When he was really wasted; he vigorously tells how he took on a Platoon of VC with nothing but, a plastic olive sword.
I can also tell you that when I was a kid and asked my parents for money; they would start telling their life stories. These were not happy stories either. I noticed that there was a proportional relationship going on. The more money I asked for; the sadder and more tragic the stories got. I remember asking my mom for money when I was about 9 or 10 years old. I must have asked for quite a bit or maybe they were particularly strapped that month because she told me about how when Grandpa was a little boy, in the old country, they had bars on the windows to keep the wolves out at night, (100% true story.)
So yes, it is not uncommon for people to exaggerate.

You're right; it's not uncommon for people to exaggerate, whether it's their life story or just a funny story. It's something we all do and, I think, human nature.
I wouldn't classify what Roberts did as an exaggeration, though.
Your uncle was actually in Saigon (or at least I assume he was). Your parents likely did grow up in a time when money was scarce. I also don't doubt that wolves did exist wherever your grandfather lived.
As for Brushy, he was never involved in any outlaw activities. He lived on a farm as a child, was a toddler in 1881, and would not participate in the "wild west" in any way, shape, or form.
His stories, while I'm sure entertaining, were simply made up fabrications as opposed to exagerrations.
